New from Artifex Mundi, experience a steam age hidden object adventure full of gothic horror and fascinating puzzles!

From an early age, Scarlett Everitt displayed a gift for the paranormal, as ghosts and spirits accompanied her every step. Desperate to protect her from an encroaching darkness, her father, Johnathan, placed her in an orphanage run by nuns. Years later, Scarlett finds that her father is missing and the only clue is one that leads her to the Victorian mansion of a baronet named Steameyer. Will she find the answers she's after?

First, I was impressed with the cut scenes, the graphics and the overall feel of the game. Voice acting was done well and the music fit perfectly with what was happening in the game.
Puzzles were fun and not too difficult as were the hidden object scenes. I played in 'custom' mode which gave me the option to relax and leisurely play the game.
What I found extraordinary were the morphing objects, which are unusual in a standard edition game. So overall, I found this little treasure of a game worthy of a five star rating. Show less

First review ever written...I play for pure entertainment after a long work week. This game was easy to breeze through without skipping mini games; interesting story line and follow-able without trying to remember who was who. Will search for more by this crew of game creators.
I recommend this game!

I have a vision that I wouldn't pay anything for this Game, but for a Free Coupon it was OK. The Graphics were OK but the background Music was dreadfully repetitive to the point that I couldn't stand it any longer so I had to mute the music. The Storyline was interesting in the beginning but dragged on and on in the end and I just wanted it to be over.
I don't recommend this game.

Well, this game certainly drags, I made it through about 4 chapters before bailing, do to complete boredom. Well, this game certainly drags, I made it through about 4 chapters before bailing, do to complete boredom. There are constant back and forth, meaningless tasks to complete, I don't mind having to travel a few scenes back to use a newfound item or two and then moving on, but picking up 1 item, going to the last scene to use it, only to get another item I have to use in the scene I was just at, only to repeat this several times...too much, too boring! Here's a recap of my review to help you decide which version, if either, is right for you:
Scarlett was just a child when her father abandoned her at the orphanage. His last words to her echoed through her mind all of her childhood life "I cannot protect you any longer, I'll return when I find a solution" Jonathan Everitt never returned for Scarlett, and when she discovered a letter addressed to her father, she knew it was finally time to search for answers. Her journey, however, only led to more unanswered questions. One thing's for certain, all roads lead to the abandoned Steameyer Factory, and Baronet Steameyer is desperately trying to block her every move, but why?
The Hidden Object Scenes were kind of scarce, but then again, the demo was really short. There are only 2 in the demo, a Progressive, Interactive Silhouetted Shape find and one that I thought was different, you had to find items related to circled sections on 3 different children's drawings.
The Mini Games are a little too easy, but that's not necessarily a bad thing as long as you enjoy the games. Here's a list with brief descriptions of some of the games you'll encounter during the demo:
1) Rotate honeycomb shaped pieces to complete image.
2) Swap tiles so each column and row has only 1 identical tile.
3) Slide copper plate to opposite side in a game of blocks.
4) Swap tiles on a honeycomb grid to complete the image.
5) Attach the horns to the correct antlers.
6) Repeat the sequence of highlighted antlers (repeat x 3)
7) Rotate and place broken vase pieces.
8) Find the correct climbing points.
The Collector's Edition version has 5 Music Soundtracks, 6 Wallpapers, Concept Art pictures, re-playable Movie Cutscenes, re-playable Mini Games and Hidden Object Puzzles, 13 Achievements to earn, 29 Morphing Father Trace Objects, 6 Main Chapters + Bonus Chapter (The Past Forgiven) and a built-in Strategy Guide.

Opening animation has a small girl of 4 to 5 years old being left with nuns at an orphanage? School? Daddy says: "Forgive me. I cannot protect you any longer, my daughter." He throws back a promise they will eventually be together and then he's gone in the rain and mist.
The game itself begins with a young woman musing to herself as her train rumbles through the countryside. She has received a cryptic telegram addressed to her father and is on her way to the station it was sent from. Moments later, the train sets her down in an aging and seemingly abandoned station near a train factory and the mansion of Baronette Steameyer. It is raining, nighttime, and there is no one to be seen.
She pulls out of her suitcase an empty lighter and a signet ring that belonged to her father. The ring will help her focus her psychic powers.
She proceeds to reconnect power to the station and a nearby trolley in hopes of getting to the Baronette's house. When she gets there, he summarily orders her to leave. Naturally she then breaks into the house. The Demo ends when he finds her in the foyer, fixing an old steam-driven elevator.
Good stuff: There are the usual game elements.
Bad stuff: I'll bet someone wanted to tell a story here. They failed.
Another reviewer said there were collectibles in the SE. No.
As for the little we see of the story, we'll have a young woman, at a time of long dresses, strict social mores, and limited opportunities for women running around the countryside on a rainy night, breaking into a stranger's house, and making herself at home. Her "visions" are in the form of simple puzzles in saturated shades of rose, purple, and aquamarine.
There is nothing in the crumbs of story to make me want to play more than the demo, which went by mercifully quickly in less than 30 minutes.
Please read the BFG blurb - it will tell more story than the game. Then try the demo. There may be something you find compelling in the short demo.

Big fan of Artifex Mundi's Enigmatis trilogy, so I wanted to try some of their other games. This one seemed interesting; a psychic child is dropped off with some nuns for reasons unknown while her father sets out to deal with some unexplained issue, and then ten years later she decides to try to find out what happened to him.
Well, the story *idea* is clever, but executed boringly. Enigmatis did a great job of 'show, don't tell.' This game, not so much. What it did show didn't make a whole lot of sense - why would Scarlett have received a letter intended for her father when they weren't even living in the same place and she hadn't seen him in a decade? Why does she have a random artifact to enhance her psychic abilities, while at the same time making it sound like she hasn't used those abilities in a very long time?
The puzzles were not challenging. I think the hardest thing I had to do was put the trolley back together, and the only reason I had trouble with that was because I couldn't find the brake pedal. The rest were so easy for me that I finished the demo in less than half an hour - and that was without skipping any of the cutscenes or dialogue.
The music was nice and the visuals are beautifully rendered. For me, the most annoying part was Scarlett's continual narration. It's both spoken and presented in subtitles. Subtitles are fine, but to hear her constantly speaking her thoughts out loud was just irritating. I came very close to muting the computer entirely. If there were no subtitles, I could sort of understand the need for her to say everything that crosses her mind, but since we could easily read the words the continuous talking made no sense.
This might be a good one for someone new to the hidden object genre, if they want to ease into this kind of game. But if you're a seasoned player, unless you've got a coupon to burn or a punch card to fill, you'll probably want to give this one a pass. Show less
