What a way to start the week! This is a puzzle adventure about a Toymaker who has a secret, one he dare not share with anyone, a secret full of magic, and of course mystery. What a way to start the week! This is a puzzle adventure about a Toymaker who has a secret, one he dare not share with anyone, a secret full of magic, and of course mystery. Nobody knows what happened to the Toymaker, or his Mansion for that matter, because they both vanished into thin air. Today is different however, because a young girl named Anne has found the vanishing mansion, or perhaps the mansion found Anne, after all, the mansion has been waiting for Anne for a very long time....
This is a mechanical type puzzle game, there are 4 different mansion themes, and the goal is to make it through each of the 20 rooms per mansion within the allotted number of moves to earn up to three gears or "stars" Each room has several sections that are in the wrong place, sections that are Black and White are in the wrong place, sections in color are correctly placed. Each section has four sides obviously, but each section has different available sides that can be accessed, for example the left side may be open but the other three sides are closed, so you need to slide unblocked sections, left, right, up or down until you are able to enter the next section as you try to make it to the section with the door. Some sections have ladders or stairs, some sections contain a key which opens the door to the next room. Most rooms have at least one Teleporting Phone (as you progress, more phones are available in specific color codes) this phone allows you to teleport to the section that contains the same colored phone, without having to move sections or slide sections. You can replay the level as often as you want to solve the puzzle within the expert score, allotted number of moves.
The graphics are really good, the tutorial is excellent and the levels progress in difficulty at a nice pace. There are 21 Achievements to earn, and there are Basement Levels available for experienced or advanced players, that are very challenging. The Basement levels have cell phones to collect that allow you to teleport to any color of phone, however, if you teleport to another section and have no extra cellphones, you will be stuck and won't be able to progress, so you'll have to start over. Very entertaining game, enjoy! Show less

Thank the game gods that you can retry over and over! it is very stimulating and much different than other games. Logic is the main skill needed. The other reviews go into the basics of the game so I won't repeat that in my review. Just know that this is kind of like a Rubik's cube or those little hand-held games of long ago where you have to move the numbered tiles around to put them in numerical order. Only a lot more fun with the beautiful graphics! I bought this game before I was even through the free trail. Show less

I've waited and waited for a sequel and finally it's here, and sooooooo much better than the first Rooms. Well, the first was pretty awesome too, but this one is updated with a bigger playing board which some other people found the last one bothersome. I'm just so excited. I bought without even playing the demo, that's how much I loved the first one.

Anyway, I'm into playing the levels now and it is so gorgeous. If this is the first time you've played Rooms you will appreciate the tutorial in the beginning levels. Don't worry they leave you alone after they've explained all the gadgets and movements. Then it will be up to you to use your know-how to escape the rooms. It's going to be so many levels to enjoy. And I'm looking forward to a delightful story.
If you like trying to figure out mazes your going to love this game. It's easy in the beginning but that is only to teach you. You will not find anything like these Rooms games they are so unique. It's an extraordinary game, I can't rave about it enough. You'll be trying to get from point a to b using sliding rooms and gadgets.
The humor was off the wall in the first Rooms. I'm sure this story will be just as delightful. Also you will be searching for missing puzzle pieces. If you decide to buy both games go for it because they will give you a whole new character and story. I'm not sure yet if I will encounter any new gadgets but it don't matter because the adventure itself is new and exciting and well worth another buy.
I'm sorry I'm writing this review early on and cannot tell you specific differences yet between the two games but I couldn't wait to give a big shout out to the developers and Big Fish for this second game. THANK YOU. I'm so excited my brain is shaking. lol Show less

This one has improved graphics, and the movements are a bit faster too, all of which makes for a better game experience. So far as I've advanced in the game, however, there is only one new element that wasn't in the first game. Hopefully, there will be more later, but even if not, it's a whole new set of Rooms puzzles, and lots of them.
Although the stories built around both games are absolutely silly, those stories can really be ignored. It's all about the puzzles. If you're like me, and love to be challenged by increasingly difficult puzzles, you should enjoy this game. If logical thinking and figuring out the most strategic approach to solving a puzzle is not your cup of tea, then you likely won't enjoy the Rooms games.
Big Fish offers all too few really good strictly puzzle games, so it's a treat when one like this is offered. Thank you, BF! Show less

Smart. Challenging. Different.
I was bummed when I tried to play the first version on my new Win10 comp.
So...I was happy to see a new one that works with Win10.
It also seems more challenging or at least there are new things to over come that were not there in the first ROOMS.

Not a game you finish in a day or two. You have to think. I can only finish up to or less than a mansion a day.
Just like my beloved Governors of Poker II, this game is almost endless.
Enjoy!

This is the first Rooms game for me and I just love it -- what a challenge. You need to apply logic to each room to find a way to the door. It can be frustrating at times, but It is worth trying to figure how each room is put together.

It didn't take me long to discover that this is a MUST HAVE game for me...and anyone else who finds fun in thinking their way "out of the box".
There are 3 pieces of a gear to earn in each room. Earning ALL the pieces means you found the most efficient way out of the room. You'll be able to go on to the next room, even if you've earned only one piece...but it COULD be fun to restart to see if you can do better. Just guessing, but it might help with the ACHIEVEMENTS too.
There is a very good tutorial, taught by your friend, and hint source, the friendly lantern. After the tutorial, you can get a hint as to how the room should be arranged by moving your cursor to the lantern. The correct arrangement will be highlighted by depressing the left mouse button. Keep the button down, and you can look at it as long as you want to.
It wasn't obvious to me, at first, so I thought I'd add an explanation of how to get back to the main menu and the game exit...
The lantern is hanging from a gear with a set of double bars in the center. Choose the bars, a menu comes up, choose "Mansion Select" and the full-screen mansion comes up. Choose "Back", and the exit is in the lower left hand corner.
There are 21 achievements to be earned and an "extra" part of the house...the basement...that you can play after completing the mansion. I'm just sure it will be devilish.
Loved the whimsical graphics...and the ongoing story of the mansion maker. I can tell that I'll be spending HOURS in this house. I'm using a game coupon, but I would happily have spent the purchase price for this one.
EXCELLENT fun and SO much bang for the buck. Click on those mansion doors and try it for yourself.
Thank you devs and BFG. Hope YOU find some fun today. Happy gaming! Show less

REVIEW BASED ON playing more than halfway through and still going!
I CURRENTLY OWN 504 computer games.
PROLOGUE
My first encounter with this dev was the prequel to Rooms: The Main Building, which he offered as a free online game. I was enchanted with the graphics, music, and gameplay. It was unlike any other game out there. Years went by, and we now have two sequelae with the same game mechanics, humor, and devilishly difficult puzzles. Here’s hoping for more.
ONCE UPON A TIME ★★★★★
Since our dev has earned his freedom from the Rooms universe, we have a new challenger: a young girl named Anne who is fascinated with the Toymaker and his Mansion. Seems the Toymaker got hold of a magic puzzle piece that made his ordinary toys into amazing toy. Except every time he used it, it lost power…until he discovered what to feed it.
Anne becomes increasingly horrified as the story is revealed to her during her exploration. Will she be able to escape the Mansion? Or will the Toymaker collect her soul to power his fantastic devices?
PLAY THE GAME ★★★★★
Within each chapter are a series of numbered doorways. Pass through, and you’ll find a number of rooms that are out of order, including one room with an exit. Your challenge is to use what’s available to move the rooms around until they’re back in order within the given number of moves, then get to the exit.
However, there will be quite a few obstacles and things to assist you, including:
• rooms that are locked in place and cannot be moved, so you have to work around them
• rooms that are blocked until you explode the blockage
• a nasty puppet that mimics your movements and explodes if you encounter him
• rooms with magnets you can use to attract/repel other rooms
• rooms with payphones that will teleport you between them, Matrix-style
• rooms with wardrobes which, when activated, will exchange the two rooms’ positions
• rooms with matching mirrors that will mimic each other’s movements, unless blocked
…and lots more!
The trick is to find the correct combination of moves to achieve three stars for each level. You can reset at any time. (Also, you can click and hold on the talking lantern to see the correct configuration.)
SIGHTSEEING ★★★★★
• Scenery - A combination of realistic textures and surreal architecture have been the hallmark of this series. There’s lots of looped animation in the background, which can be a clue to which room goes where, but also adds to the charm.
• Up close - No zoomed-in scenes.
• NPCs - Anne is a 3D rendered character with exaggerated features, and adorably cute.
• Cutscene Animation - The backstory is presented in a lovely sepia-toned silhouette style.
• Zoom Scene Animation - No zoomed animation.
SOUNDBOARD ★★★★
• Music - Enjoyable and well done, but not as varied as the previous episode.
• Environmental Sounds - Excellent! Everything you do has an accompanying sound effect, and they’re all realistic.
• Game Sounds - There aren’t many, since most actions have their own sound effects.
• Voiceovers - Honestly, I can’t remember whether there was narration, but there were no other voiceovers.
TOOLBOX ★★★★
At left is a counter that tracks the number of times you’ve moved any/all rooms, the reset button, the talking lantern, and a navigation button that allows you to move from mansion to mansion. That last is a bit tricky and can be frustrating. I’m torn as to whether this game could use a hint system. On the one hand, I feel like it would make me lazy. On the other hand, I have been well and truly stuck in a couple of levels.
BUGS & BOTHERS
No technical difficulties, lags, or annoyances with Mac OS 10.11.6.
EPILOGUE - Overall Rating: (23 total ★) ÷ 5 = 4.6 ★ (rounded to ★★★★½)
If you’re a fan of thinking games, this one’s for you. Sure, it starts out easy, but it becomes difficult rather quickly. And that’s awesome.
RECOMMENDED BY THIS DEV (★★★★ or above, based on my rating at game’s release)
Both from this series:
The Main Building ★★★★★ 2015
Rooms (the free online game) ★★★★★ 2007
