Completed Original Awakening Series & Remastered Version
33 Main Game Scene Locations +7 Bonus Chapter
Difficulty Range: Beginner-Intermediate-Advanced
Come on folks, everyone complains about the cookie-cutter games being released week after week, yet when a developer from yesteryear remerges to Remasters a classic HOPA we show our gratitude by slamming the game? Why??? This remastered version added Morphing Fairy Collectibles, Goblin Cards that unlock Goblinjong levels, a Strategy Guide, and a Bonus Chapter, not to mention modernizing the graphics and features including a Journal where all the clues are entered! Nothing about this game is cookie-cutter, nothing was removed and everything was improved so what exactly are the naysayers complaining about here?
The Dreamless Castle was originally released on February 13, 2010, and it received a 4.6 average star rating with 96 Five Star reviews! The original game was never offered as a Collector's Edition, yet a simple Standard version still received 143/161 reviewers recommending this game. The original release made you think and had such an interesting storyline that you couldn't wait for the next game to continue the saga of the Human without Magic who awakened from a Dreamless sleep. The Awakening series was fantastic in 2010, and is even better in 2022!
We all need to keep in mind that HOPA games are costly to make, far more costly than casual games, and there is very little profit to be made. Because there is such a small profit margin on HOPA games, developers from yesteryear either threw in the towel or switched to the mobile market.
Some devs, such as BoomZap, re-entered the market with simple Hidden Object Games that weren't as costly to produce. The low ratings this game has been receiving have really upset me, it's not as if this developer started getting lazy and threw out a bunch of boring clone games identical from one series to the next as the "other" two HOPA developers did! When devs don't bother to introduce new features and the gameplay is pathetic, that's a different ballgame, but when a dev goes above & beyond to remaster a game that wasn't compatible on newer machines so everyone can enjoy the series again, that is something to be extremely grateful for!
How on earth do you expect other developers to enter this market, or spend the time, money, and effort to remaster other classics like Dire Grove, let alone enter the market to produce new HOPAs... IF we don't show our appreciation????? The game, the story, the remaster, and the additions are just as worthy of that 4.6 average star rating as it was in 2010. If you truly hate this remaster, please, for HOPAs sake bypass the review so other developers won't be leery of diving into the market or dipping their toes back into the HOPA pond! :)
GRAPHICS/AUDIO:
The graphics were amazing then and they are superiorly stunning now! The crystal clear graphics combined with a soothing array of audio soundtracks work together seamlessly to set the pace for this fantasy-themed adventure. It's the kind of game that makes you feel as if you are the Princess awakening from a Dreamless sleep feeling a bit confused and slightly disoriented, versus simply moving a character from scene to scene in a third-person "just watching" kind of scenario...the first sign that a developer did their job well by immersing the player into the game.
GADGETS/HELPERS:
Although you will have several Dwarves and Goblins that help you throughout the adventure, there are no "Helpers" There are no "Gadgets" either, however, there is a good old-fashioned Journal located on the bottom right. All important clues are automatically added to the journal and when a relevant clue is needed to solve a task or puzzle, you can open the journal and "Pin" the page as well as drag the page wherever you want to move it! I really miss the Journal that used to be a given in the older games, the less hand-holding the better!
COLLECTIBLES/MORPHING OBJECTS:
I absolutely love the Morphing Fairies! The fairies are not only beautiful, they blend into the scenery just enough to make them challenging to spot. Not only do the fairies Morph at a perfect pace, but they also morph between a dragonfly or something similar so they never stick out like a sore thumb in either form!
There are Collectible Goblin Cards in every scene as well. The cards are used to unlock 24 multi-leveled Goblinjong mini-games. Goblinjong is basically a Goblin-themed Mahjong Game with the goal of uncovering and matching the two Key Cards or tiles. Each scene has 2 Morphing Fairies and 2 Goblin Cards and a Collectibles Crown Tab on the bottom left to keep track of the scene's collectibles
HIDDEN OBJECT SCENES:
Hidden Object Scenes are scant in this game but when they do roll around you will be pleasantly surprised with the unique styles. Some of the tasks require a little bit of thought, some items are only partially visible, some require an interaction or two, and several items are just plain ole blended into the scenery brilliantly! Even the HO scenes have at least one puzzle you'll have to solve in order to progress but the HO puzzles are usually pretty simplistic, such as rotating squares or swapping tiles to complete the image.
MINI-GAMES:
This game will definitely delight puzzle geeks, but they are all doable and I didn't find any of them to be frustrating. Although there are a ton of puzzles, most of them are really tasks versus a mini-game, such as posing ballerinas to open the box, or recreating pictures, designs, or sequences to open doors. They were designed like this in all older games back in the day...nowadays we don't have to solve tasks logically, they just slap up a sticky note with the code to a safe or combination, no brain required!!
BONUS CHAPTER:
The original Awakening: The Dreamless Castle was only offered as a Standard Edition version so Awakening fans should be delighted to finally get a new Bonus Chapter story after all these years. This is an average-length chapter that takes place over 7 additional scene locations with 12 mini-games, 6 Hidden Object Scenes, and 4 puzzles within the HO scenes. Those amazing collectibles continue with 2 Morphing Fairies and 2 Goblin Cards per scene (14 Fairies & 14 Goblin Cards)
COLLECTOR'S EDITION EXTRA'S:
12 Wallpapers, 21 Dev Journal pictures (concept art), 24 multi-leveled Goblinjong Games, 22 Achievements, 66 Morphing Fairies, 66 Goblin Card Collectibles, 4 Main Chapters, Bonus Chapter, and a built-in Strategy Guide.

I've enjoyed the adventure several times and each time I play I see something new. I marvel at how the quality of our games has diminished over the years. Thank goodness I have my huge library of oldies to fall back on. Boom Zap brought the magic back today, the remaster enhances this fantasy splendidly. It would be lovely to see remakes of the entire series. I really saw very little extra content to justify paying the CE price, but it is a very good idea in this case, for the Strategy Guide if nothing else. I do prefer CEs but can't always afford them. Follow my budget, not my heart isn't so easy!
There are no options and fancy features to rely on, no Custom Mode to hand-hold you through the game. You have to pay attention and look for hints and clues to escape the castle. Without the usual Hint Feature, you are faced with a fine challenge that makes this a great game and leaves you very satisfied. My pride was glowing at the end! The HOPs and puzzles are delightful, none are easy-breezy but not impossible. The HOPs are interactive and of good variety. I even ignored my usual impatience with puzzles and enjoyed them as well. The saga is best, IMO, with the stories played in sequence but you won't be lost if you do otherwise.
Awakening features beautifully designed characters, excellent graphics , nice color, gorgeous scenes, lots of interesting locations. Dreamless Castle will start you on a magical journey you'll want to follow to the finish. If you aren't familiar with the series, I highly recommend it. Entertainment and beauty abound. AND the continuing story makes sense. How often does that happen these days?! Show less

I have never written a BFG game review before, but the Awakening series is one of my top favorite game series of all time--not even just casual games, but literally one of my favorite game series ever! So when I saw there was going to be a remaster that I could play on my newer Macbook, I was thrilled. This game especially is one that I know like the back of my hand, so I was excited to see what stayed the same and what changed.
VISUALS
This game is gorgeously repainted and redone with amazing attention to detail. The visuals perfectly take the original charm of this game's visuals and give them wider screen space. I was nervous that they'd change the art style too much, but was pleasantly surprised to see how close to the original everything was.
The only time the visuals lost a bit of punch for me was in the all-new scenes in the bonus chapter. I've always adored BZ's style in the Awakening, Dana Knightstone, and Otherworld series, but something in the bonus chapter felt very different. It almost felt like a different game in terms of the visual style. And sometimes the bonus game HO scenes felt a little empty or random and less realistically cluttered, unlike the main game or the rest of the series, where the world feels so naturally lived in.
But this is INCREDIBLY nitpicky.
PUZZLES
As for the puzzles, there were some fantastic additions. The original game had a few repetitive puzzles, and this remaster did an amazing job of keeping the ones I loved and finding the right ones to replace with interesting new puzzles and tasks.
The original game had a few places where you could jump ahead a few puzzles if you had some of the solutions memorized, and the remaster did a great job of limiting those opportunities and making it so you had to play through every puzzle (which I guess might be a negative if you're a speedrunner!).
Occasionally, I had bugs where the puzzle wouldn't recognize that I had input the correct solution. Luckily I was able to eventually skip the puzzle to keep moving forward and not lose out on a "no-skip" achievement or something, but I figured I should point it out.
Literally the ONLY puzzles that I thought were a downgrade from the original were the harp puzzles in the lounge/parlor and the mirror room. What used to be a pair of memorization puzzles is now a "guess and figure out the correct order to play the strings" puzzle, which took FOREVER because you didn't know how long the combination should be and the directions didn't tell you that you could repeat the same string twice or three times in a row. This was one where I was glad I had the strategy guide to just skip over.
GAMEPLAY
Once again, there were some really incredible choices on what to add to the game in terms of overall gameplay. We now have a MAP, which was incredibly useful because the original game had some occasional backtracking. This is a feature I'm REALLY looking forward to in the Moonfell Wood Remaster. The map also showed where you were missing collectibles or where there was an action item. Good stuff all around.
You now have the ability to PIN notebook pages on the screen to help out with a puzzle. I LOVED this! I had never seen this feature before in a HOPA game, and it was SO helpful. It can get so frustrating going back and forth between a puzzle and your notebook, so this was a very welcome addition (before this pin feature, I'd often end up just taking a picture of my notebook on my phone so I could look at it while doing the puzzle).
FINAL THOUGHTS
I adore this series. It's literally up there with The Last of Us and Uncharted and Roller Coaster Tycoon as an absolute favorite series for me. I literally have kept my 10-year-old Macbook ONLY to play these BoomZap games that weren't converted to 64-bit yet. I would EASILY pay to have every game in this series (and Dana Knightstone) remastered, especially so I can play it on my newer Macbook.
This was a long-awaited and amazing experience to play this game again. The only thing that brought it down just the slightest bit for me was a little feeling of visual inconsistency in the bonus chapter.
I'm just so thrilled to bring these games into a new era. Big Fish, PLEASE have BoomZap remaster the rest of this series, Dana Knightstone, and Otherworld (with the final game). I've been dying for classic BoomZap games with shiny new graphics and gameplay, and this definitely delivered for me. Show less

This remaster was a pleasant surprise. Where to begin? I'll start with things I didn't quite like.
- So, as of fairy Mira, I'm not a fan of her remastered look. They kinda made her look older and gave her a darker green skirt, changed the white flower for a blue one... This remaster was a pleasant surprise. Where to begin? I'll start with things I didn't quite like.
- So, as of fairy Mira, I'm not a fan of her remastered look. They kinda made her look older and gave her a darker green skirt, changed the white flower for a blue one... Her blue eyes are conspicuous. She doesn't have cute little cheeks she had in the OG, yet her body in the remaster looks bigger. I liked how she at least moved a bit and not just stayed frozen like in the OG. The inventory style and the dialogue look could have also been as the OG ones, I think they just had more details. The remaster on this point felt flat. I hope the developers will keep that in mind in the next remaster/s.
- Same music. I at least hoped that they would add more tracks that would keep going but they left it the same. I am okay with it, but I expected more. at least for Bonus Chapter then but... all are the same there, too.
- No background sounds, just as the OG, which is fine, but I wish we could have had those. In Moonfell Wood, that would be a must, since the OG game has a lot of those. No voice-overs though. For some reason I thought we would have those. But it's fine even without them.
- Cutscenes could have been a bit slower, they could have been going more slowly and let the player decide when to click and continue.
- I put "OK" for the "Level of Challenge" because the OG is no different either, they kept many same puzzles and added some new ones, or reimagined ones also, which were easy, which is fine for me, probably because I played the OG a thousand times by now and they really really kept 90% of the things the same, which I admire, but for this section I'm afraid it goes 2/3 out of 5. I'm sure the ones who never played this game before will find it harder. But an advice to you folks, play the OG first.
Everything else is just fine! I love how they kept the OG look in every location and in some just improved the whole look and bought more life into it. I love how they kept the same look for Sophia, really appreciated! That "pin" option inside the diary is awesome, totally new in this genre.
(SPOILER, DON'T READ IF YOU HAVEN'T FINISHED THE BONUS CHAPTER!!!) Bonus Chapter left me in curiosity. It was kind of random to see Sophia's daughter in the picture. How is that possible if this Bonus Chapter takes place right after Sophia leaves the Dreamless Castle? She has a daughter after the events in the Redleaf Forest. Was she there just randomly because she's a part of the series?
Anyways, that would be about it. I enjoyed this game very much and I am happy remaster came along. This was one of my first HOPA games I played, and probably one I mostly played out of all, so just seeing something like that is coming back to life was a dream to me. I am hoping the developers will bring us great remasters in the future of their amazing games, and, in their support, I give this product five stars! Thank you BoomZap Entertainment. Show less

I really enjoyed this. there were some issues, but not enough to ruin the game. the map, while welcome, was not always accurate. Loved the new collectibles.
I hope you will remaster the rest of the series.

I found the puzzles challenging and fun, with some new but welcome additions. Worth checking out for yourself, I won't go into detail mainly because other reviewers have done so and rather brilliantly at that. So I will take the view of a casual fan who wants something new and interesting. Awakening has always proved itself to be unique, I have yet to come across other games with a mirroring storyline. If there is one out there I haven't found it yet. Nothing against a retelling of a Grimm's fairytale but I have always found Awakening to be unique.
I only have one question: Does this mean we are going to get a remaster of Moonfell Wood as well? Because that would rock and I would be able to own the collector editions of the entire series. Show less
I recommend this game!
