The storyline grabbed me from the start when I reviewed the Collector's Edition. I've been waiting for the Standard Edition to come out to buy it. I'll leave all the technical critiques to the experts but I am having fun playing it. The challenge is just right for me. The graphics and sounds are excellent. I haven't finished it yet, but I am excited to see how it ends. The only annoying thing is your sidekick, who, to me, isn't necessary. The story holds it's own. I recommend this game whole heartedly. I have this whole series and this one was actually more challenging than others I have played. I actually caught myself using the hint quite a bit. I've been playing these adventure games a long time so this one caught me off guard a bit.
Longer game than usual and with a good ending. I just think its always funny the master detective does nothing and all the dirty work is done by the player. ...Show more

Detective Dupin is back in the latest Dark Tales game Metzengerstein. You have traveled with Dupin to Hungary at the request of Mary von Metzengerstein whose daughter was attacked by what she calls a ghost. After you arrive on the scene you find that the attack could have been the result of a very long family feud. So now it is time to roll up your sleeves and delve into a new Dark Tales mystery. Alas, my favorite game detective has undergone some changes in recent years and he now looks rather worn and tired but I guess being involved in all these strange mysteries over the years has taken its toll; or maybe it is because he is now traveling in one of those rare and dangerous, early automated carriages that caused problems in the mid-19th century – lol.
The graphics are as dark and gloomy as they are in most of the EAP Dark Tales games, and in Metzengerstein they create a perfect setting for the game’s theme. The sound package was mediocre at best with the voice acting being very bland, with not even an attempt at the proper accents. The game offers four modes of gameplay including a custom setting. In the Custom mode you can set the hint and skip buttons in a range of 5 to 200 seconds. There are 5 chapters in the game and when the demo ended I was beginning Chapter 3 so this might be a short game. Your tools include an interactive map and also a camera that will provided filmed clues.

The HOP scenes are fairly standard but do include some variety. During the demo there were two storybook type HOPS where you must find the bold print items that are hidden in the scenes, a standard list type scene, and one where you find a certain number of an item. Most of the scenes are revisited but they usually change in “type”. I didn’t notice an option to switch to an alternate match 3 game rather than looking for objects.

The mini-games were well integrated into the gameplay but they were fairly typical of puzzles normally presented by this developer. I didn’t find any of them to be difficult during the demo but they usually become more challenging as the game progresses. One feature I like is that we can choose the level of difficulty on some mini-games. My least favorite types of mini-games are those manual dexterity types, particularly the ones where we are racing along a path and must avoid obstacles.

Dark Tales Metzengerstein is a study in family dynamics. What happens when your family is embroiled in a long-term feud that has deadly consequences? As much as I love this developer, the Dark Tales games are not my favorites and this game seems somewhat tedious and plodding – at least in the beginning. I love good mystery games and this one does have an interesting storyline. Even though there was one scene that I found rather gruesome, I did forge onward to solve the mystery. I was surprised that the full game is better than I initially thought it would be. I highly recommend that you try the demo before you buy to see if this is a game you will enjoy.

I liked the atmosphere of the game and the graphics were good. The hidden objects are varied and you have to move things to make up other items, or collect 12 or something. I also enjoyed the mini-games as I could complete them (not too hard).

After I finished the demo, I purchased this game in the CE and as I progressed, I began to realize something. I began to realize that all of the games offered in the Dark Tales series are all the same. The same graphics, all of the scenery and buildings are variations of all the other games in this series. The characters are all the same as well as their voices, in fact every time I play a Dark Tales game the characters look so much like the last games that it seems as if the game is a continuation of the previous game because they look so familiar (doesn't the daughter look like the "lady of the night" witness from the last game?) and the voices all seem to be the same voices as well. I expect Detective Dupin to look and sound the same, but I think this series is releasing new Edgar Allan Poe mysteries at such a rapid pace, that they don't realize how noticeable it is to the player. This is one of the reason's that DTEAP mystery games haven't gotten rave reviews lately from Big Fish reviewers. Because the game fizzles out too much after the demo, I have deducted a star from my rating of the CE. With that being said, this Standard Version is the better option between the two versions if you're inclined to purchase one or the other.
My grandparents came to America from Hungry, when they were around 13 years old. (at that point they weren't yet my grandparents, lol) Even though they lived in the states most of their lives, they had very strong accents, and never could pronounce words correctly that began with the letter v, they would pronounce it with a w, vine sounded like wine every single time, even at the ripe ole age of 84. This game is supposed to take place in Budapest Hungary, yet, none of the characters has even a hint of an accent, German or Hungarian? If all of the people doing the voiceovers speak perfect English. then why not have the game take place in America? Oh well, minor details right?
Dark Tales has another Edgar Allan Poe story to tell, a story about two bitter rival families, the Metzengerstein family, and the Berlifitzing's (no v's to worry about here) These two wealthy Hungarian neighbor's have been feuding since the beginning of time, and Detective Dupin's services are required when Frederica von Metzengerstein becomes the victim of a what her father believes is a harbinger of the family curse! This ghostly apparition tries to lure Frederica to the dark side as he demands she follow him, through a mysterious purple fog, but a hero hidden behind a cloak always seems to save her just in the nick of time. It seems like Death himself is calling her to the afterlife! Is the hero hidden in the shadows trying to save Frederica to break the family curse? Who knows but surely, Detective Dupin can sort all the facts out and solve yet another Dark Tales mystery.
As I stated earlier, I gave only 4 stars to the Collector's Edition, and lowered my rating to 3 stars for this Standard Edition. In my opinion, the storyline is good but not great. The game becomes stagnant at times, and seems to drag on and take too long getting from point A to point B.
The Hidden Object Scenes are repetitive, not only are the scene locations repeated, but most of the HOP's are the same type, finding Keywords while Frederica reads her diary, and later in the game takes place while you are reading lost pages. There are several HOP's where you must find several of the same item such as 12 nails or 12 suns. There are also several progressive interactive Silhouetted Shape find types.

The Mini Games offer nothing new, and really nothing exciting. A few of the games are available with a difficulty mode of Casual or Hard, but not many of them which is unusual for this series. Below are brief descriptions of some of the games you'll encounter during the demo, and a few notable puzzles after the demo:
1) Trace symbols with the mouse aka candle, without going outside of the outlined shape.
2) Complete the picture by swapping triangles to available highlighted slots.
3) Move the letters to their correct spots based on the clue.
4) Rotate three discs to complete the picture.
5) Set the correct combination to the lock.
6) Turn 4 horseshoes in the correct order, turning one horseshoe may affect others.
7) Move skulls to their correct slots based on color, along the tracks, skulls cannot cross over each other.
8) Play the 5 melodies encrypted in the symbols on the music sheet by choosing 3 images from the piano keys to create each symbol shown.
9) Place all the figures onto the shelves so that their sums are equal.
10) Several mini games where you follow simple directions in the correct order to create a recipe.
11) Fill the baskets with the required fruit by clicking and dragging identical chains in a Match 3 type game.
12) Swap horse figurines to match the bases with the shapes on the shelves.
13) Set the clock to the correct time according to the clue you found then play a variation of "blocks" to move the blocks with symbols into the matching slots located on the top, bottom, left and right slots on the board.
The Collector's Edition has 18 Achievements, 13 replayable videos, 10 Wallpapers, 7 Concept Art pictures, 5 Screensavers, 3 Music Soundtracks, 16 replayable Mini Games, 21 replayable Hidden Object Scenes, 15 Collectible cards that allow you to play a Mahjong type game when all have been collected, a built in Strategy Guide and a Bonus Chapter. I hate to write negative reviews, because I know these people work hard to bring us good game. That being said, I am going to get this off my chest now and then go to some of the better things about this game. It was not near the quality in any fashion, as the previous games. I played the demo, and thought, "this has to get better." It didn't. This isn't a horrible game. I have played a lot worse. I don't know what has happened to this designer. ERS has been one of my favorites over the years, but this lacked imagination and technique that has set them apart from most of the others. It passed the time, but that is about all I can say about it. This game is not one I will be looking forward to playing again as I do my others.
Graphics were okay. They were pretty much as most of the there games. However, the voice overs were way below expectations. I'm not exactly sure what Hungarians are suppose to sound like, but it can't be what was presented. Dupin, wasn't even close to previous characters of him. The music was the same as before. It's good and the effects went along with the action in the game. Colors were dark as I expected from playing all the other Dark Tales games.
Really not a lot new in the hidden objects. Some were pretty difficult and some really simple. Good mixture. The mini games were the same. Some I did right away and others I skipped. Just thankful for that custom setting which allows for quick hint and skip.
There is a map which transports and shows where there are things to do. I had a problem with the map in that it took forever to pop up. I could almost cook a meal in the time it took. It was quicker just to hit the hint button and go from there. Yes, I got frustrated with the map if you couldn't tell.
The story was good. It was over shadowed to me by the other things I mentioned above, but it held together throughout the game. I never really got into the story like I have before. Things just seemed to happen. The ending was a surprise that came from nowhere.
As always, give the demo a try and you might like this one more than I. I do recommend the game, but if I had it to do over again, I would have waited for a special or coupon for a free game. Show less
