If I had to sum up this entire game, it would be “A haunting crime who-done-it, interesting story, and not at all scary”. I thought the graphics were clearer than some of Elefun’s other games and its windowed state adjusted nicely to a larger monitor.
This game is one of the few that actually changes the TIME OF DAY! I’m just stoked when a game changes up the time of day in a scene and/or the basic color scheme of the game. I’ve noticed if I’ve played in the same color scheme & areas that look too much alike, it becomes a little monotonous. So in a good way, it really is a game changer for me. ha-ha
I wished the text bars would have stayed up a bit longer and re-appear if the item was clicked on again; but they did stay up when characters were speaking. I actually bought the CE to this game and wrote a more detailed review under that version of the game regarding the bonus play, and details of the bonus you can't really see in the demo.
Chapter 4 was probably my favorite chapter in this game.
The SE portion of the game took me 3 hrs. 28 min.
The CE bonus took me 1 hour 30 min.
Total gameplay- a couple min. short of 5 hrs.
MUSIC: Typical to Elefun games, the music is great in this title too, and ones I saved from the CE content. One track sounds almost "Ancient Egyptian". Sometimes I listen to the CE DLs of gaming music while doing Reiki, in real life, to assist with the relaxation level needed. So its a perfect game for someone that just wants to chill out after a busy day.
HOPs & MG: There are just too many of these to list that I really liked. There is a HOP in chapter 4 where you hand items back into the scene to a miner. It felt like a lot of time & effort went into this one. Matching pictured items from inventory to place back into the HOP is one of my favorite types of HOPs, especially the way it was done here (I also like the standard list with some interaction).
Chapter 4 has another HOP at the lake, where you move items within the scene to match silhouettes. At one point you even toss a rock into the water to make a fish pop out. How innovative is that?? The lake area itself (along with a location in bonus play) is the most beautiful scene in the game.
My favorite MG was at the VERY end of the main game. When you see a computer, be sure to click all the tabs on the screen to get the most out of this. Much of the story is tied up here and it’s important to read it. The main game has a great end and is independent from the CE bonus play.
IF YOU LIKED THIS GAME, maybe demo these, they remind me of this one in some ways.
1. Lake House: Children of Silence (2012 game though)
2. Phantasmat Reign of Shadows (Especially at the beginning)
3. Enigmatis 3- Shadow of Karkhala
Thank you BFG—Great job Elefun! Show less

Once again play the role of Emma Roberts( Paranormal Journalist) as Editor Anthony Williams asks you to investigate a cursed Hotel/Spa construction site of the Alaskan mountains in the town of Whitewall. Construction of the resort began the first week of October when weird things started happening and by November workers on the site saw a Ghost girl and refused to continue the project. At the construction site you pick up your suitcase which contains a copy of Fear For Sale magazine "Hidden in the Darkness" a cursed watch and a journal that belongs to a man named Norman Grady. Norman was a gold miner for the mining town of Whitefall. While looking for gold in Whitefall he fell in love with a girl named Olivia Rice and subsequently proposed to her as you learn from reading his journal he wrote in 1912. Your adventure continues once you board the Alaskan cableway car which takes you back in time to 1912 when the small town of Whitefall burned completely to the ground. When exiting the cableway you meet Norman, who has fallen into an opening in the earth beneath the mine shafts. You rush to attempt to save Norman but that leads you to the jail of Whitefall where the deputy sheriff tells you there has been a murder recently and the town is closed. He directs you to see Sheriff Dan Rice who is Olivia Rice's father. Dan Rice never approved of Norman and daughter Olivia getting married, he doesn't give consent so Olivia refuses Norman's proposal. In fact Dan suspect's Norman of the recent murder and entices the township to a jury trial. A quick stop at the dressmaker gives you an opportunity to change your modern day clothing into bounty hunter attire which is suitable for 1912. This way you can enter the town unnoticed to learn more about Norman's trial. The township convicts Norman of Olivia's death, but you are convinced he's innocent. You proceed to break Norman out of jail by setting off a GREEN GAS EXPLOSION to distract Sheriff Rice and the township but in doing so you create a fire that you quickly find a way to extinguish. When the fire dies away the Deputy Sheriff enters the jail, announces that Olivia Rice's body has been found and he arrests YOU for her murder and locks you in jail. After freeing yourself at the jail you find yet another journal, this one belongs to Joanna Chaney. Her husband Tobias is a close friend of Sheriff Dan Rice. Seems that Joanna kidnapped Olivia when she was a baby but she didn't murder her and neither did Tobias. Find the secret passage way Joanna speaks of in HER diary and escape the jail. Hurry Emma because you can't leave Whitefall until the curse is lifted. The deceased people of Whitfall live the same day over & over again. In the morning no one remembers what occurred the day before except you, because you never died. You must stay ALIVE Emma and figure out this conundrum!!!
Issue eleven takes about four (4) hours to complete and another 50 minutes with the bonus chapter. Elefun games did an amazing job with the storyline but the CE bling isn't worth mentioning. This game is not as ‘fearful’ as the title promises; still, the story alone is fantastic enough to make us look pass that fact. The graphics are on the same level from what we expected from a leading HOPA development team. The colors are vibrant and the details are vivid, the locations ominously portrayed the era and the animations are acceptably smooth. Moreover, the soundtracks are great, they really add some suspense to the game. I've been a fan of this series since it was conceived in 2010. This one was a definite purchase for me. Cheers!

Fear For Sale is now my favorite series and I just realized I only have six of the eleven games in the series, so I'll wait for a sale and purchase the rest of them. I may have skipped one mini-game (can't remember for sure) so that makes it enough of a challenge to keep me interested. I like a little creepiness in most of the games I play and this fits the bill. Good game.

Woot! we got a brand new layout, new cursor, new fonts for the menu - only the “Fear for Sale” lettering remains the same. Looks clear and fashionable, I like it.
The loading pic is a novelty too, but quite a hapless one. Every time a scene loads, or every time we zoom into a HOP or puzzle, we see the vignette of a path in the woods. It's a constant interruption of the game flow. I wish they simply would shorten the loading time and spare us this ever same, redundant picture.
STORY:
The manager of a building project in Alaska calls for help. His workers quit their jobs due ghostly appearances, and the company is losing money by the hour. Oh well, the north isn't my favourite destination - however, what can we do but follow Emma on her freezing investigation? Luckily, the snow covers only the first scene. When we travel to the haunted building site, we manage to fall 105 years back in time - and it's suddenly summer 1912.
Back then, Alaska wasn't even an U.S. State, just a territory, swarmed by gold hunters. The Klondike gold rush attracted around 100'000 people, even from Australia or England. One marvels at the luxury which they brought to the end of the world: oak panels, intricate Louis XV furniture, even electricity. But with the gold business came competition, corruption and a certain lawlessness. So we consequently witness a mob which accuses an innocently looking young man of murder. Of course we have to interfere. Also, because we are stuck in the time trap of Whitefall and cannot escape before we set things right again …
The story tells about a secret love, of corruption and injustice; it's an intricate and thrilling whodonit which kept me on my toes. Only the end is a bit a disappointment, since it engages again one of these ho-hum "ancient spirits". As if humans would not be responsible for their acts; it must always be “the evil” which tricks them into badness.
Naturally ancient forces cannot be depicted. Not convincingly anyway. Ancient forces are Gods, intangible, inconceivable, beyond good, evil or imagination ... and they whisper: “Thou shalt not make idols.” Exactly. Every picture of a god or a devil can only be untrue. Or ridiculous like this skeleton in its tattered dress.
The Standard Edition plays in 24 scenes, contains 15 HOPs, 21 puzzles, and occupies 40 pages in the Guide. Read my review of the Collector's Edition for more information about Extras and Bonus. Music lovers might consider to buy the CE for the wonderfully spooky soundtracks with ghosts' choirs. I wonder where the crafty composer found those. Probably in Emma's evidence :) Show less

I'm on the last chapter of this game, and for some odd reason, the repetitive plot holds your attention. Just when Emma gets close to fixing the mess that has cursed the people of Whitefall, something else goes wrong, but that's okay, because tomorrow's another day. Every evening the townsfolk go to bed, and every morning they wake up to face the same day as the one before, the details may change, but the results are always the same, Olivia has been murdered! This isn't the best Fear For Sale game in the series, but the story line is really good, from one chapter to the next. It seems like a long game, but it has an annoying feature that just makes it seem that way, every time you travel to a different location, a "loading...." page appears, and it seems like it takes an eternity! This is a common feature in EleFun games, and I have no idea why they haven't found a way to solve this issue, other developers don't seem to have this problem!?! Here's a recap of my review to help you decide which version, if either is right for you:
Emma Roberts the famous journalist from the Fear For Sale magazine, is on another paranormal investigation in Alaska. The small town of Whitefall is experiencing some large issues, of ghostly proportions. Some say these are the spirits of the victims who were burned to death when Whitefall was completely turned to ash in 1912! The spirits became restless when a Spa and Hotel was recently commissioned, and Emma soon finds herself stuck in the past. Has the curse of Whitefall snared Emma in a trap from the past, or has the past caught up to it's future?
WHAT HAPPENED to this series staple features??? There aren't any points to earn for collecting items or achievements. There aren't any collectibles in several categories, there aren't any jigsaw puzzle pieces to find, and you don't get to work your way up the journalistic ladder from Cub reporter to a pulitzer prize winning Emma Robert status! I never thought much about these features to be honest, but now that they're gone, I'm really disappointed! Elefun games includes these staple features in all their games, Witches Legacy, Mayan Prophecies, The Keeper of Antiques, and until now, Fear For Sale. Now that they are gone, I say bring them back, otherwise these games are no different than all the other games out there. They added a new feature that made me gasp with horror, a Tribal Amulet to help Emma overcome mystical objects. Let's not talk about this feature...ever!
Besides the usual features of 12 Achievements to earn, wallpapers and concept art pictures, the Collector's Edition version also has 33 Morphing Objects, one in each scene, (At least they still offer Morphs) and the collectibles are just a stupid Eye sketch. If you go into the journal, you can click the eye symbols to fill in puzzle squares, which you then swap until they are placed correctly, and then you can read a paragraph about the story with each eye you find. This feature does not impress me in the least bit, and it's kind of hard not to spot an out of place eye sketch with huge eyelashes, not to mention the fact that the paragraphs are no different than the info you obtained playing the game! The cursor also changes whenever you scan across an item that morphs, a feature I wish was an option that could be disabled. You can still interact with a few items in each scene but not as many items as usual for this developer.
The Hidden Object Scenes are varied with Interactive List finds, Multiple Item finds, and Keywords in a Story. There are also the usual Zoom Zone HOP's where you find a handful of objects that are spread throughout the scene on the outside of the Zoom Zoned area. Some HOP's have an optional Jigsaw Puzzle to assemble, but the one jigsaw puzzle I assembled, had very dark pieces on a dark background that made it difficult to see the puzzle pieces and where they were supposed to go.
The Mini Games are decent, but fairly easy to solve. Below are brief descriptions of some of the games you'll encounter during the demo:
1) Use the clues shown to enter the correct code, each of the 5 clues tells you where the puzzle piece doesn't go such as this isn't first, or this tile doesn't go before this one.
2) Move figurines along the track to their corresponding articles.
3) Use the Tribal Amulet to find 7 hidden symbols.
4) Find and select the landmark clues to find the correct paths through the forest.
5) Swap photos and notes to the correct labeled category.
6) Follow the recipe directions.

I found this game to be an enjoyable way to pass a lazy day. It was more fun than I expected. I'm not a big fan of ghosts, demons and things that go bump in the night, but I own several of this series and knew what to expect so it wasn't a downer.
Graphics were well done. Colors were excellent and easy on the eyes. Voice overs were pretty well done, perhaps a bit over acted, but good nonetheless. Music and effects went along with the action in the scene.
The only problem I encountered was with some of the hidden object games. There are several where you have a story with highlighted words and you have to find something in the picture that matches that word. Some of them were just beyond understanding. Trying to understand what in the world I was suppose to be looking for was beyond me.I used my hint more than usual in these. The other hidden objects, which were varied, were very good. Mini games were mini games. I did some of them and skip some. Not a big fan of them anyway. Some I couldn't figure out what I was suppose to do and others were just too consuming for my patience level. In other words, this is a difficult game so far as all the puzzles and hidden objects. I found it very challenging. The map is a big help. It shows places you have something to do and will transport. The amulet which you get at the beginning of the game is a mini game in itself. The requirements change each time it is used.
I actually liked the story line. Wasn't real sure I would because of the genre, but I did get into it from the very beginning. Others will go into the story so I'll leave my critique there. The ending was a bit weak, but as I think about how I would have ended it, I couldn't come up with anything any better so I suppose it was fine.
There is that loading screen. Many games will just give you a black screen while it loads, but this one seemed to do it every time you changed scenes or went to a puzzle or hidden object scene. Not a deal breaker, but it was a baffling as to why they used the same picture each time.
All in all this is a good game. Give the demo a try and see if you like it as well. Show less

Norm loves Olivia. Olivia's Daddy, the Sheriff of Whitefall, does not like Norm. Olivia is murdered. Fast forward one hundred and five years and Emma Roberts, our journalist from Fear For Sale magazine is on her way to investigate mysterious happenings at the site of a new resort hotel being built on the spot where Whitefall existed until it burned down in 1912 and was never rebuilt.
Emma is thwarted on every side as she gamely tries to get to work with very little help from the single local resident who seems to be the only one around when she arrives.
Good stuff: All the usual game elements including a Puzzle alternative to the usual HOPs, familiar puzzles, lots of beautiful artwork and music. The VO's and animation were well done. Emma has another mystery afoot, with a little time travel thrown in for novelty.
Bad stuff: The usual failed logic rears its head as you find pieces to a safe lock everywhere from a public fountain to an abandoned wagon in the woods, with the key hidden in plain sight. And you get to do odd stuff like making not one, but two sleeping potions just in the demo. Yawn.
Bottom line: The time travel and story line may be enough to peak your interest.
Give the demo a try to see if you want to investigate with Emma.
