I absolutely love this game! I've been playing it for 4 hours. now and am still not done. Although you have to manually back out of every site which can be a pain, there is also an interactive map that makes getting from one area to another action scene, easy. The hint gives clear direction and refills quite quickly. I wouldn't recommend it for those who are new to Adventure HOG's. But a great game for anyone who is experienced. The graphics are good and the HOS's are not easy but standard, which I happen to like. Many of the puzzles can be a bit challenging but that's a plus for me. The story is not clear, but I believe that's the intention, to keep one in suspense for as long as possible. Which I also happen to like a lot. All in all a great SE game! Show less

It was a very long game with a solid storyline that had a satisfying, appropriate ending. I found consistent quality throughout. Even though the lips were crazy-out of sync, the written dialogue was well written and easy to follow. I loved the story and the characters. The main character was a beautiful young lady with a big adventure ahead of her, but I will not spoil it by telling all. I will tell you that it is a good game and story. The graphics are absolutely gorgeous with rich colors and interesting scenes. There were 57 collectible butterflies to be discovered and a little window popped out on left of screen to keep you informed of your butterfly count. The jump-map was superb and took you quickly to the locations, it was a different kind of map which would take you around the grounds by holding down the left control and moving your mouse about...the areas with no further action available were in faded outline. Main character's face showed where you presently were, her hand showed where tasks were available. The hint button was a beautiful perfume atomizer that sprayed in the direction of your item, a sweet extra touch! And the hint button was quick re-loading and took you to locations like the map did. I was very impressed with the game mechanics. The HOGs, puzzles, games were all terrific. There was a potion-mixing one that especially enjoyed. It was a most entertaining game. The options included left-handed mode, custom cursor if you wish and multiple language choices. The sound FX and music were excellent. There are extras after completion of game: Diary which was already viewed in game, a book of hand-drawn & painted butterflies and a book of hidden object scenes. the HOs even though fun to play were time consuming so I stopped only because after completing each one, the book closed & returned to menu where you had to go back each time to continue on with the next one. Too time consuming. There were no gruesome scenes in this game, no crazy maniacs on the loose. Just a big beautiful castle with a big mystery to solve. I highly recommend! Show less

I thoroughly enjoyed this game and own the music as well. Excellent graphics and great storyline. I bumped up my 4-star rating to offset the very negative reviews, which I don't believe are deserved. I played this game to the end and had a thoroughly good time.
1- it's old school, but not that old school. Games where you have to download Direct X is old school, and Direct X is not used.
2- yes, you have to click and drag items from inventory for action to take place, but what's the big deal?

I bumped up my 4-star rating to offset the very negative reviews, which I don't believe are deserved. I played this game to the end and had a thoroughly good time.
1- it's old school, but not that old school. Games where you have to download Direct X is old school, and Direct X is not used.
2- yes, you have to click and drag items from inventory for action to take place, but what's the big deal? A little wrist exercise never killed anyone.
3- yes, there are big arrows that allow the scene to be extended north, south, east or west, but they only appear when you move your cursor toward edges of the screen, as a HINT there's more to just the scene in front.
4- yes, there are no voiceovers. You have to read dialogue. So what? when there are VOs, some people complain about the voice actors or they have it on mute. This allows you to read at leisure and there is a Skip button if you absolutely can't take it.
5- there is a teleport map (upper left corner, green compass icon)
6- there is a diary comprised of notes or evidence picked up during the game in the journey. Sometimes they provide the answer to a puzzle, most of the time they provide background for the plot.
7- there are 3 modes of play (easy, medium, hard). Hint & skip are allowed in all modes, just interval of hint & skip varies. I like that. However, no BFG blog walkthrough.
8- the loading screen page has a tab that explains how to play the game (10 screens, easy to go through and quick)
9- there are EXTRAS normally included with CE versions only. There are 57 butterflies to collect, 1 in just about every new scene. They are pretty easy to spot at 1st, and get harder towards the end. Butterflies collected go in a watercolor painting album accessed with loading screen under "Extras". I didn't spot all butterflies, so cannot report what the extra bonus is.
10- HO scenes are replayable at completion of game.
11- the best part of the game is the artwork, which is sharp, clear, and high def. It's a bit like reading a Jane Austen novel, if Jane Austen wrote mysteries. You wander through a library, dining room, observatory, garden, bedroom, armory, kitchen, all of them beautifully decorated (even when shabby and dark) and feels like what wealthy landowners in Victorian England really lived like.
12- HOS scenes are standard variety, but some items are hard to spot, for challenge
13- mini puzzles are mostly easy, but I did have to skip a couple because I didn't have the patience to keep trying
14- the game does have animation, but not the disco ball throbbing light explosion seen in more recent games, but honestly, the story takes place in 1850s England so it would be out of place, timewise.
I found not having voiceovers less distracting, and I could go through the game at my own pace, breathe in the ambience and enjoy the artwork with some mystery thrown in for good measure.
The plot is coherent, with just a bit of fantasy, and predictable, but nevertheless, not too farfetched.
So, I say download the demo and try for yourself. I own a few bum games in my BFG library, but this game isn't one of them.

Thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful little gem. I wish more games were like this one.... a true casual adventure. So many games now rely on competitive bells and whistles versus content.
For those that enjoy more story than flash and clash, you will like this game!

This game required attention to detail. It actually required me to keep notes of what was needed and where. I really liked the challenge. Some info is needed on a few game locations, but after playing with stuff like the numbered panels on the dungeon entrance it was figured out. Items like that made it slow going but I liked the challenge of the game.

I was planning to dump this game after ten minutes of playing but decided to keep at it another ten minutes and by then I was hooked.
Yes, the interface is clunky to say the least by today's standards, but the rest of the game makes up for this. Good music, no "messy" or "overdone" scenes like most games today (where I give up playing because there's just too much nonsense).

I like a clean game with just a few things to do in each scene and this game provides that.
Good map and hint system and there is a collectable which I like (thank you devs for not making it into a horrible morphing thing).
A simple, realaxing game well worth a punch card code if you give it a chance. Show less

I rated it a solid four stars across the board because it's not perfect, but it kept me interested until the end. Graphics are hand drawn but they're clear and well-drawn. Hidden object scenes are basic, no interactive element, but they're quick and enjoyable. The puzzles were fun as well.
There are no voice overs but the dialogue is well written and flows nicely. The music and sound effects are pleasant and don't require being turned off.
While I wasn't automatically taken out scenes when I completed tasks, I didn't find that a big deal. And having to drag items to where I needed to use them was also not annoying to me -- there are many games that work the same way.
What I was most impressed about was the immersive story line and that there were collectibles to search for in this standard edition game. Regained Castle had a lot more going for it than most of the new CE offerings coming out. I recommend trying it for the trial period to see what YOU think. Show less
