It has everything the other 'Dark Tales' stories has: an interactive map that not only transports you but closes off scenes once you've completed them. Fun interactive HOS, and not so hard (at least in the demo) mini-games and puzzles.
I don't usually buy CE's, as they are too expensive, plus I can do without all of the extras. But I just couldn't wait until the SE version comes out, so I immediately purchased this game.
If you like the other Dark Tales games, you'll like this one just as much, possibly a little bit more. Enjoy! Show less

Even though I can't pronounce the name, I loved the game! I've been waiting to finish playing since I had the chance to start this in Beta testing. I was thrilled from the start. For me
it seems that ERS very seldom lets me down. I may stumble over the family name but I sure didn't stumble over great puzzles and intriguing story line. Hope you enjoy this game as much as I did!

Wow! This edition really raises the bar for the entire Dark Tales Series. The story starts with the main character taking a trip to Hungary, where the Metzengerstein royal family needs your help. As it happens, the sole heir is being tormented by some kind of fog spirit, and you are the only one who can help. Equipped with all sorts of devices and tricks, you set out to find out more about the ghost and maybe find a way to get rid of it once and for all. It’s the 19th century, and you’ve been summoned together with Detective Dupin by the influential Metzengerstein family of Budapest. The case – their daughter Federica is being terrorized by an unidentified individual who masquerades as a ghost with a fog in tow. Just when you think nothing could be more eerie than the case, you uncover a story of forbidden love that set the wheels turning in this exciting addition to the series. The game begins with a slightly lengthy introductory cut scene that shows Federica almost kidnapped by the man-ghost wearing a bird mask and surrounded by a purple fog, only to be rescued by a shotgun-toting person wearing a skull mask and a hat. After that, you plunge into the game proper. What a plunge it is indeed! The Hidden object puzzles in this game are remarkable. Your first ever puzzle also doubles as a narrative device – it’s a diary by the Metzengerstein daughter detailing her misgivings and the story of her unfulfilled love for a man named Wilhelm, whose family her father believes is cursed. The text in the diary is used as the clue to find out which object you’ll be looking for in the puzzle. The game also includes a unique feature – it allows you to photograph some scenes in order to reveal clues that will help solve a nearby puzzle. For instance, you take a photograph of the box containing Federica’s diary to find out what the code is so you can unlock it. I was super impressed by this game for it's unique story and fantastic graphics, sound/SFX and spot on voice acting. I highly recommend this game and give it 5 stars across the board. Thank you Big Fish for continuing this series. I haven't enjoyed a spooky thriller like this in a long time!!!

BASED ON THE DEMO:
OVERVIEW: Follow me – as we return to 1847 Hungary in a dark mystery game with a ghostly masked figure, a family curse, and a tragic love story. Dupin is back in a game based on Poe’s first short story. As the assistant to Dupin, find yourself embroiled in a feud between two families and a love story reminiscent of Romeo and Juliet. I find this a decent 5 star game. The story is engaging; the pace is decent; and the graphics are dark and brooding providing an excellent background for a macabre Poe story. There are only four HOP scenes in the demo, two of which are storybook to provide some background on the story. The puzzles are varied and some contain a “casual” and “hard” setting. Your “helper” in this game is a camera to take pictures every time you see a purple fog in the scene. The pictures provide information you need in playing the game. You collect 15 cards relating to the Poe stories. You can replay both the HOP scenes and the mini-games and there are 18 achievements.
STORY: Will the feud between the Berlifitzing and the Metzengerstein families ever end? Someone has attacked Frederica and the Metzengerstein family has asked Dupin to investigate. When a masked stranger kidnaps Frederica, you are off to find her. A budding romance between Frederica and the son of the rival family, Wilhelm, has ended in tragedy when Wilhelm is killed, burned in a fire. Was her father responsible for his death, not wishing her to marry due to a bitter feud and the Berlifitzing family curse? And who is the masked stranger lurking in the shadows?
HOP SCENES: In the demo, the HOP scenes consist of two storybook scenes, a list of items to locate and a mini-HOP scene.
PUZZLES: Returning are the “hard” and “casual” versions of SOME of the puzzles. There are a couple of manual dexterity puzzles. One of these is a tracing puzzle and the other is one in which you ride a horse while avoiding obstacles in the road. Other puzzles include a switch puzzle to recreate a picture of a “Poe raven.” The “hard” setting I found a little difficult in this puzzle. The other puzzles include a very easy sequence puzzle and a sequence of two moving tiles puzzles involving skulls. There are some puzzles in the inventory as well including an assembly puzzle to create a bucket.
LEVELS: Casual, Advanced, Hard, Custom
Hints and Skips: 5 to 200 seconds
EXTRAS:

Map is provided as you play the game
You get a camera to take pictures. Take pictures every time you see the fog. You receive a picture which will help you in the game.

I do wish that collectables could have a hint if you miss them as they are quite fun and I inevitably end up missing one! Love this series of games and this one didn't disappoint. Some of the game instructions could be a bit clearer and I did have an issue with the horse/obstacle game- my cursor went haywire- not sure why. There were lots of areas to explore too- not just the same few settings you go over and over again- that was extremely pleasing. I must see if there are any more games in the series I haven't got Show less

First of all, my grandparents came to America when they were around 13 years old. Even though they lived in the states most of their lives, they had very strong accents, and never could pronounce words correctly that began with the letter v, they would pronounce it with a w, vine sounded like wine every single time, even at the ripe ole age of 84. This game is supposed to take place in Budapest Hungary, yet they don't have even a hint of an accent, German or Hungarian? If all of the people doing the voiceovers speak perfect English. then why not have the game take place in America? Oh well, minor details right?
Dark Tales has another Edgar Allan Poe story to tell, a story about the Hatfield's and the McCoys, well actually the Metzengerstein's and the Berlifitzing's (no v's to worry about here) These two wealthy neighbor's have been feuding since the beginning of time, and Detective Dupin's services are required when Frederica von Metzengerstein becomes the victim of a what her father believes is a harbinger of the family curse! This ghostly apparition tries to lure Frederica to the dark side as he demands she follow him, through the purple fog, but a hero hidden behind a cloak always seems to save her just in the nick of time. Could Death himself be calling her to the afterlife? Is the hero hidden in the shadows trying to save Frederica to break the family curse? Who knows but surely, Detective Dupin can sort all the facts out and solve yet another Dark Tales mystery.
Why only 4 stars? In my opinion, the storyline is good but not great. The game seems stagnant at times, it seems to drag on and take too long getting from point A to point B. The Hidden Object Scenes are repetitive, not only are the scene locations repeated, but most of the HOP's are the same type, finding Keywords while Frederica reads her diary. I also think this game offers very little for a Collector's Edition. There are Achievements to earn as most CE's offer, but the only real feature is 15 Collectible cards that can be found tucked away in a zoom zone occasionally.
The Mini Games offer nothing new, and really nothing exciting. A few of the games are available with a difficulty mode of Casual or Hard, but not many of them which is unusual for this series. Below are brief descriptions of some of the games you'll encounter during the demo:
1) Trace symbols with the mouse aka candle, without going outside of the outlined shape.
2) Complete the picture by swapping triangles to available highlighted slots.
3) Move the letters to their correct spots based on the clue.
4) Rotate three discs to complete the picture.
5) Set the correct combination to the lock.
6) Turn 4 horseshoes in the correct order, turning one horseshoe may affect others.
7) Move skulls to their correct slots based on color, along the tracks, skulls cannot cross over each other.
This Collector's Edition has 18 Achievements, 13 replayable videos, 10 Wallpapers, 7 Concept Art pictures, 5 Screensavers, 3 Music Soundtracks, 16 replayable Mini Games, 21 replayable Hidden Object Scenes, 15 Collectible cards, a built in Strategy Guide and a Bonus Chapter, enjoy! Show less
