A bit of divergence from my normal habit of posting a review based on the game demo as this time I have completed the game and the bonus game before writing my review. I understand that many don’t like what they consider cookie-cutter games and it seems that some of the luster has faded from this developers overall popularity. However, I loved this game and at least for me, it is one of the best in the Dead Reckoning series. I rarely play the bonus chapter in a game since I am usually bored by the time I complete the regular game but not so with Snowbird’s Creek. In addressing the sameness of most HOPA games, the format is that we look for objects, use those objects, play a mini-game and follow a storyline. This is the basis for the genre and it is not often that we see something different. You either love HOPA games or you don’t. It is the same with all of the TM games I have played – there is not much that differs from game to game.
The storyline is excellent and consistent without a lot of jumping all over the place so it is fairly easy to follow. What I happened to love about the game is that it wasn’t super easy to get started and always figure out what needed to be found to move forward. Some of the found items were used creatively and on more than one occasion I said “why didn’t I think of that” after I used a hint.
In Snowbird’s Creek the HOPA scenes were excellent and I am always hooked into finding those morphing objects. I felt that one scene was a bit different than usual but I am a true fan of the genre and love searching for objects so I don’t always need something different. I found most of the items to be easily identifiable and even when a scene was done with silhouettes, those were clearly depicted so the items were not overly hard to find.
Yes, the mini-games were fairly easy but some were more challenging. However, most of them were excellent and not the type where you toggle switches. The information for completing the puzzles was clear so at least when I was stuck I had a good idea where to begin.
This developer is one of my favorites and almost always presents an excellent, well put together HOPA game. Yes, they may be a bit cookie-cutter to some but at least this developer strives to excel when presenting a game. As I mentioned earlier I loved this game and am now looking forward to the next offering from this team. Please try the demo to see if this is a game you will enjoy. Show less

I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed playing this game. I don't know that it is the best in this series, but at least it didn't have ghosts, witches and other things that go bump in the night. This was such a relief to play something that was so different than the usual, I can't wait to play it again. For this reason alone I gave it five stars. With all the factors coming together just made this a joy to play.
As usual with Eipix, the graphics were excellent as was the sound, including the voice overs and music. I turn down the music so it's a background, but it was loud enough it could get my blood pumping. Colors were bright and realistic enough for me. You spend a lot of time in a mine, so it's going to be a bit drab, but it is true to the story.
Level of challenge was just about right for me. There was just enough variation in the hidden objects I didn't get bored. Items were well hidden in plain sight. Maybe I need a trip back to the eye doctor. Mini games .. were mini games. I played many of them, but I just don't have the patience to sit there and work them. One thing I do like about this developer, is when you do skip a puzzle, it shows how it was to be done. Next time I'll have an idea of what to do. You have the interactive map which was really helpful. There is some back and forth so the transportation is wonderful and it shows where you have something to do. I love that aspect. With several degrees of difficulty (as usual I chose the custom) there is a level for everyone.
I did get a bit confused in the story, but that is probably my fault. I bought the game on Sunday after doing the demo, but there was football, so I didn't get back to the game until today and somewhere in-between I missed something that ties it together a bit more. It made sense though and ended well.
Give the demo a try. I'm sure if you are as sick and tired of the supernatural as I, you will jump on it. It is an awesome game. Thank you Eipix for showing there is more to the gaming world than witches and goblins. Show less

The musical score, for example, would build up, but die down in awkward places, lessening my sense of urgency and the desire to continue. The graphics were very good and I love the fact that the inventory uses unconventional ways to open things in order to move on. The HOPS and mini-games were complimentary and unique to the storyline, which centers around the murder of a rich mining tycoon with a variety of suspects. It is not clear who the bad guy is, always leaving the player wanting to know more and see how it ends. I recommend this game, it is a great addition to the Dead Reckoning series. 4. The puzzles weren't very hard, at least as far as what I came across.
5. I felt the music inappropriate for certain scenes. It was oftentimes fast when the scene called for more of a subdued tone.
6. The game/storyline had an edge to it that I found nice. It is a mystery, after all, so giving it that extra 'OOMPH' (can't think of what word I want to use) adds to the overall gaming experience.
All in all, if you're a fan of the 'Dead Reckoning' series, check this game out. Enjoy. Show less

I really liked playing a game set in a real place for a change, in this case, Alaska. I played using the custom mode because I prefer no sparkles in HOPs and minimal instructions. Some of the inventory items were used in unusual ways but I was able to figure out what was needed even though some of the usage was not particularly logical or realistic.
I liked investigating the crime scene with the detector that changed color to let you know you were getting close to a clue although it might have been more challenging if it told you how many clues there were and left you to figure out which objects were clues.
One of the better sequences was finding your way through the woods based on a coded clue that you found. You had to search for the symbols, though, which involved different tasks like searching the foliage or matching objects you found in a particular scene. I would like to see a sequence like that combined with a riddle you had to consider that if solved would indicate a type of plant or animal that you needed to find and the plant or animal would be found in the appropriate habitat. Perhaps the devs could consider that for a future Dead Reckoning title.
I must admit I found the story a bit confusing and got to the point where I couldn't remember who was who after a while. I did enjoy exploring the mine, though, but I wish the defusing explosives sequence had required more thought. The minigames were varied in difficulty although I had seen most before in other games. I had just played another EIPIX game where I had to assemble pieces of a drive shaft to rotate gears so I didn't find that particular puzzle as interesting as I did the first time I encountered it. I only skipped one minigame because its random aspect became tedious to me.
Being set in Alaska, I would have liked encounters with wildlife in the game and a more realistic soundscape. But the game kept me interested enough to complete it. Show less

I'm not a hard person to please when it comes to games, usually I can find entertainment value in every game I play. I had a really difficult time finishing just the demo, which thankfully was short, taking me just under an hour to finish.
When Dead Reckoning was first released, I thought it was a terrific whodunit adventure that appealed to my sleuthing side. Lately, the epic games of the past are spiraling downhill while some lesser known titles are stepping up their game. Probably because the devs believe the game will be a hit because most gamers automatically purchase games because "all of the other games were really good" and lesser know devs still strive to produce a better game than the last one, right?
As far as whodunits go, I suppose this is a good enough plot, just not one that I could relate to. Seth Savage is a railroad tycoon that has the Klondike gold rush community of Snowbird Creek split. Railroads could make or break the hard workers, some risking their lives panning for gold, others rely on making their money working on Seth's latest tunnel project. When Seth Savage is found murdered, the list of suspects begins to pile up in this ruthless untamed town, and of course that's where your skills come into play. Finding out who killed Seth Savage and why!
With the Collector's Editions version, Dead Reckoning: Snowbirds Creek does seem to have all the "extra's" one could ever want. The only thing I would question about the CE's worthiness is that the entire game may be quite short if the demo itself is a mere hour, give or take. Each scene has a Hidden Sign, but the bright gold fishing trophies are hard to miss, they stick out like a sore thumb. There are several Achievements to earn, and most of the Hidden Object Scenes have a Morphing Object to find.
The Hidden Object Scenes are typical, with several of the standard type scenes. There are Interactive List finds, and scenes where you find 5 identical items in 2 different sections which give you an item to release the rest of the listed items such as a hook to grab the net that covers the inventory bar. The only HOP that was slightly different required you to find items in a general store with just the inventory numbers such as 516 or 331. There is a Morphing Object in each scene and you can opt for a Match 3 game instead of the HOP. Technically, each time you interrogate a suspect (or examine a body) it's in the form of a HOP because you have to find evidence one item at a time.
The Mini Games are entirely too simple. Most of them can be done in seconds, which at least allows you to earn an achievement pretty easily. Below are brief descriptions of some of the games you'll encounter during the demo:
1) Arrange the financial records so that their lines complete a pattern.
2) Match all of the inner rope fibers by opening two fibers at a time.
3) Find related pairs of hiking items.
4) Dial the numbers written on a clue you found earlier.
5) Orient the tracing on the map by rotating the tracing and dragging it around until it lines up with the original.
6) Charge the tram by traveling through each point on the map without traveling to the same point twice.
7) Repeat the pattern by pressing the left or right keys to match the birds movements.
8) Move the golden keys to the 3 slots on the left. Select arrows to move all of the keys which move until they hit an edge, obstacles or each other.
The Collector's Edition has 6 Videos, 7 Music Soundtracks, 8 Wallpapers, 8 Concept Art pictures, 23 replayable Puzzles, 13 replayable Hidden Object Puzzles, replayable Match 3 Games, a13 Morphing Objects in the HOP's, 13 Achievements, 40 Hidden Signs, a Souvenir Room to store the collectibles, a built in Strategy Guide and a Bonus Chapter. Give this one a try before you buy, it's just to iffy of a game. Show less

I had trouble getting into some of the areas I wanted to look at which made it seem as if there was nothing of interest there, but then when I would get a hint, it would point to the exact spot I had originally wanted to look at. I'm not sure if that was a glitch, or if I didn't have the necessary inventory item yet, or some other problem.
Overall, I simply got bored with the story line before the demo ended. It didn't capture my interest enough to continue putting up with the annoyances. Show less
