In the new Danse Macabre Ominous Obsession you find yourself neck deep in a mystery after your friend Maria is kidnapped. Maria has a great future ahead of her in films in America – that is if you can find her and help her achieve her dream.

I actually am impressed that this game has some great puzzles and HOPS. Some of the HOPS seem better than usual as are the puzzles that, at least for me, seemed to have more challenge. Yes, there was a very easy gate puzzle and then another on the ship that could have been a bit more difficult but I enjoyed most of the puzzles right from the beginning of the game and found them to be different than those we normally see from this developer. IMHO, the developer did a great job by bringing us puzzles that have some new twists. I loved the one where we have to weave a cover of ribbons. I am not going to detail all the puzzles or HOPS I have encountered today because other reviewers do an excellent job of covering the nitty-gritty for you.
As usual the graphics and all of the other video features in the game are top quality but I did notice that some voiceovers are not lip- synced. The game does have the custom setting that I love and then we have the interactive, transporter type map to help us on our adventure.
The CE version has the predictable collectibles, morphing objects and other standards but I happen to love CEs because of the in-game Strategy Guide even though I rarely use it. It is often very helpful to clarify instructions for the puzzles if one is not sure what to do.
Many seasoned gamers will not agree with my opinion of the game because it is what they call cookie-cutter and that is okay. How we perceive games is very personal and subjective so not everyone will love this game. I have purchased and played almost every HOPA game since I became a BFG member over ten years ago. I am absolutely a total fan of the HOPA genre and never seem to tire of playing this type of game. Yes they are the same thing many times because aside from the storyline and graphics there is not really too much room to create something different. I too have my days when I seem to be tired of playing HOPA games but I inevitably just have to return to fill my passion for playing HOPA game. I happen to love the storyline for Ominous Obsession and have played the entire game and stiff find it enjoyable. It is a great game – at least for me – and one I find has enough challenge and difference to keep me well-entertained. As always, please try the demo to see if Ominous Obsession is a game you will enjoy as well. Show less

The game was interesting and fun and, as usual, Eipix combined the perfect music to enhance the storyline. I did not like having to unscrew each screw, it reminded me of the old games with tedious requirements. The HOPs were same-old, same-old, and I was surprise since it's game developer is one of my favs. The challenge was good and gave me that sense of urgency to press on. The only critique for me is the storyline, not giving me enough information to want to find out how it ends. I recommend this one, it will keep you entertained. Thanks, Mia. Show less

The only problem I had was with the mini games. I'm not a big mini lover in the first place, but most of these I couldn't figure out what to do. Way past my abilities and patience. Hidden objects were varied and well done. I do have difficulty with those that pop up in the window of the hidden object scene. They are so small I have difficulty seeing them. Other than that loved them. The map is a great help. It transports and shows where there is something to do. There are, I believe, four different levels of challenge, so it you are a die hard you can do the hard, but I choose the custom so I can set the skip and hint to their fastest level.
Big Fish does a great job setting the story line for you, so I won't go into it. I'll just say it has continuity and kept my interest. Devil got his due, which is a good thing. Wish they would make a gender option. I hate digging my heels out of the closet to get into the game... :-)
Give the demo a try. I do believe you will enjoy this game as much as I did. I really hope this is the beginning of a change from those supernatural themed games. Well, at least I can hope. Show less

I totally agree with one of my favorite fellow reviewers, Granny_Gruff, (I love her fantastic sense of sarcasm) when she stated that "this is another bland overly average addition to an established series" I think we can all agree that we've been there, and done that, the devs didn't get creative on a single feature, the graphics are bland, the HOP's are uninteresting, the puzzles are, well, they're just puzzles that have been done before, not even the music is exciting. Everything just seems like a chore, but there's no reward for doing the chores. If a story is really exciting, doing mundane tasks aren't bothersome because you'll do anything to advance the storyline, right?
Danse Macabre games are all about talented artists who rise and fall usually at the hand of a familiar person who has a hidden nefarious plan. When your best friend Maria Reiter is chosen to be cast in a movie by a renowned producer in New York, you accompany her to the docks to say your farewells. Before the ship even leaves port, you witness a stranger kidnap Maria, using the ship's only lifeboat! It's now up to you to uncover their nefarious plot, and save your best friend from what seems to be human artist trafficking.
As if the game itself isn't boring enough, the Collector's Edition version has very little to offer. SURPRISE! There are 39 Hidden Signs, one in each scene to look for, but it's kind of b-o-r-i-n-g. Bet you didn't see that one coming! Other that a morphing object offered (and only within the HOP's) there's the usual Achievements to earn, so if you really have to have this game, I'd stick with this Standard Edition.
The Hidden Object Scenes offered are the same as the other games offered by Epix with the typical "find 5 of this item and 5 of that item" which gives you an item to use as a tool to open up the interactive lists such as a broom to sweep the dust covering the list. There are also Descriptive list finds, Multiple item finds and matching pair finds where you click items that are covering the matching pairs. As I stated earlier, the Collector's Edition includes a Morphing Object in each scene, and you can opt for a Match 3 game instead of the HOP.
The Mini Games are okay, but most are fairly easy to solve. Below are brief descriptions of some of the games you'll encounter during the demo:
1) Rotate the moveable parts of the gate until the two wings of the gate are identical.
2) Send the ships to the correct ports based on their flags, with the specific number of moves indicated without backtracking.
3) Use the clues from the leaflet to find the exact address of the theater.
4) Select and place the tokens in the correct order to complete the picture, each new token placed will push the previous token to the next slot.
5) Position the note on the right side so they mirror the ones on the left side.
6) Connect the ribbons to all the buttons so that every pattern on the ribbon on the top of the heap matches the pattern of the tile below.
The Collector's Edition has 9 Music Soundtracks, 7 Videos, Match 3 games, 22 replayable Puzzles, 16 replayable Hidden Object Scenes, 8 Concept Art pictures, 8 Wallpapers, 39 Hidden Signs, a Souvenir Room, 16 Morphing Objects within the Hidden Object Scenes, a built in Strategy Guide and a Bonus Chapter. Mediocre stuff: All the game elements are here with all too familiar HOPs with morphing objects, puzzles with almost adequate instructions, varying qualities of artwork and sounds, and a story lacking passion and interest.
Bad stuff: All of the above because there is no originality here.
Another bland, overly average addition to an established series with been there, done that game features and a story that has more holes than Swiss cheese and is so much like other games that you'll want to check the title to see what you are playing - repeatedly.
If you have played any of the dozens of series games dumped on the market by Eipix this year, you have probably seen facets of this one and will find it distressingly similar with what is becoming a common lack of logic and cohesion in an ultra-light story.
I, too, realize that the gaming experience is personal to each of us. I, too, have played hundreds of games since I joined BFG. Long ago I knew that not every game would be a hit for everyone. That being said, I still expect some interest, some spark to make me want the game in my collection.
Unfortunately, this particular game is not my pick for today - or any day. I can not recommend what I will not purchase myself.
Please try the Demo and form your own conclusions.
