Harriden Welles has invited 5 of his favorite authors to his wealthy estate for a literary contest. The thrill seeking Lucas Routledge, who has written the Hidden Expedition series, the slightly neurotic Jessica Benedict, author of the popular Danse Macabre series, the reclusive Cameron Jones who somehow managed to write the Off The Record novels at a very young age, the paranoid writer of Phantasmat, Adam Johannson, and of course you, the famous author of Dead Reckoning, have all agreed to compete to write Mr. Welles' biography. The evening has just begun and naturally, someone has just been murdered in a classic Dead Reckoning style, which happens to narrow down the playing field. The murderer is taunting the other 4 contestants with riddles of their demise, and it doesn't take long to figure out that the murderer is killing the victims in the same exact way as the characters in their books have died! Whodunit? Who will win this deadly contest?
Welcome back Dead Reckoning, after Snowbird's Creek, I had my doubts that this series could make a comeback, but they have done a masterful job with Death Between the Lines. This is the series that puts the who into whodunits, not to mention the what, where, when and why as you interrogate the remaining suspects and try to stop a cold blooded killer. The only assistant you need for this case is your Tablet which helps you keep track of the evidence and clues you compile while trying to find the person behind the motive. The Collector's Edition version offers a Hidden Sign in each scene, which in this game just happens to be cold, hard cash, Dollar Bills that is, but in my opinion, this Standard Version is perfectly fine. They have altered the way you interrogate the characters a slight bit, instead of deciding if they are lying or being truthful, you are tasked with finding multiple examples to back up their statements in a Mini Game Hidden Object scenario.
The Hidden Object Scenes are very clever in my opinion. There are some unusual kinds as well as the typical Interactive List finds, Keywords in sentences, and Silhouetted Shape finds. My favorite HOP was finding items that match a riddled type description, and some of the Zoom Zone HOP's did a nice job of blending items as well. Some of the HOP's have a Morphing Object available in the CE, and there is an alternate Bubble Shoot game to play.
The Mini Games are decent, I thought the first puzzle was very creative in how they tied the game into the famous BF review rating system for each of these well known games. Below are brief descriptions of some of the games you'll encounter during the demo:
1) Complete pie charts by selecting and placing the parts correctly using the ratings breakdown.
2) Lead the helicopter to the top-right, using directional arrows to avoid obstacles without running out of gas.
3) Arrange the ornaments on the door to match the ornaments on the other door.
4) Use arrows to move the slider to each checkpoint, one arrow moves the pointer two spaces left the other three spaces right.
5) Select and drag tiles to recreate all of the shapes shown, all tiles must be used.
The Collector's Edition has 12 Music Soundtracks, 6 Videos, 8 Wallpapers, 8 Concept Art pictures, 22 replayable Puzzles, 12 replayable Hidden Object Scenes, replayable Bubble Shoot games, 38 Hidden Dollar Bill Signs, 12 Morphing Objects in the HOP's, a Souvenir Room, 16 Achievements a built in Strategy Guide and a Bonus Chapter, enjoy a good book tonight! As the acclaimed writer of the popular Dead Reckoning series you have been invited along with four other authors to compete for a chance to write the biography of Harridan Welles an extremely wealthy and reclusive tycoon. Before you know it you have been whisked away on a private plane to Mr. Welles secluded mountain home where you meet the other four competitors. Things quickly take a turn when one of the authors is killed shortly after your arrival and only go from bad to worse as you are drugged and then almost asphyxiated when you get to your suite. Is someone trying to narrow the field or is there something more going on? Play this excellent new Dead Reckoning game as you attempt to find the murderer and stay alive. If you are lucky, you might just survive and win the competition.
It is no secret that I am a huge fan of this developer and love most of the Dead Reckoning games but I would venture to say that this one might be the best yet. The graphics are very good although I have some time related confusion that doesn’t always make sense. Your tools include an interactive map and, as is the case with other games in the series, you have deduction tools at your disposal, this time all neatly stored in your tablet.
The HOP scenes are well-designed and fit beautifully into the storyline without making the game seem choppy. If you choose not to hunt for items in the HOPS there is an alternate bubble-shooter game available. The puzzles are good but most are typical and familiar to those we normally find from this developer. I did find one during the demo to be challenging, at least for me since I don’t care for this type of maze puzzle. I don’t mind taking time to solve a puzzle but I want the logic to be a bit more obvious instead of having to make a wrong move and then start all over again. However, for the most part I like most of the puzzles and find them entertaining.
The question is always, should I go for the CE or wait for the SE to be released? In my case I can hardly wait for the next HOPA game to be released so I generally am chomping at the bit by the time they hit the BFG market. If you enjoy CE games because of the extra content Death Between the Lines offers the following goodies: collectible $ bills hidden in each scene, morphing objects found in HOPS, strategy guide, bonus chapter, concept art, wallpapers, music, videos and replay of HOPS and puzzles, Bubble-Shooter game, and the souvenir room. All extras in Death Between the Lines are consistent with those this developer generally offers in its CE version.

For me the biggest selling point in the game is the creative storyline. I am enjoying the way the game is presented and actually feel like I am a part of the mystery. Although I think I have figured out who the murderer might be, there might be some surprises ahead. Death Between the Lines is an instant buy for me but, as always, please try the demo to see if you will enjoy the game as well.

Graphics were very well done and the sound, including the voice overs were excellent. I see they have gone back to the window for voice overs which I really don't understand, but other than that, it was perfect. Music went along with the action in the scene as did the Fx.
Only difficulty I had was with the mini games (nothing unusual there) but I also had some difficulty with the hidden object scenes. They were very well done. Items were hidden deeply in the scene and some were just impossible for me to see. The hidden objects were varied which kept my attention.
The map is a necessity for me. There is a lot of back and forth and here to there. It was almost impossible to remember where things went once I found them, but the map saved the day.
I loved the story and although I figured out the ending well in advance, it had me from the beginning all the way through. It was neat how they blended writers from my other favorite games into this one. That was really an unusual addition. I've got all the DR series and I do believe this one is my favorite.
Try the demo and I think you will be as hooked on this as I. If you are as tired of supernatural themes as I am, you will find this a breath of fresh air. Show less

Fantastic murder mystery. Loads of great puzzles and HO scenes to make anyone happy. Right amount of dreary stormy weather, thunder, wind and lightening. So many scenes to explore and each scene had lots to do. I was happy throughout the game.

I enjoy murder mysteries, they are my favorite genre of books to read but if you do not like them you may not enjoy this game.
What I really LOVED about this game though, was that the developers accomplished all this without ANY paranormal infiltration. I'm sure there are other creative ways to make games without resorting to ghosts, witchcraft, etc. as this game shows that it can be done and still get 5 star reviews from the leading key contributor reviewers! The story premise is an Agatha Christie type setting with 5 authors invited to Rupert Welles estate, and then you're off to hunt for whodunnit and why.
The Welles mansion is mid-century style and reminiscent of Hitchcock's North by Northwest. I thought it was very well decorated and loved wandering the rooms.
The ending is not as spectacularly good as the buildup, but having so enjoyed the game and the house interiors, I rate this game excellent and fun. There are quotes from literary greats interspersed among the cinematics and excellently written murder notes sprinkled through the game as a tribute to literary giants and people who enjoy fine literature.
