Although I don't see this game as a 5 star adventure, I do like the storyline which is kind of quirky, complete with zombified citizens and even mermaids! After the demo, I found the graphics took a drastic turn when at times they seemed cartoonish, not crisp like at the beginning of the demo. The characters are appealing and likeable which can make or break a game if you cannot connect with the characters, especially the main character who is usually the one you portrait. Song of Sorrow is a consistent game other than the wavering graphics, but if compared to the last Whispered Secrets: Everburning Candle, it doesn't, well, it doesn't hold a candle to it, pun intended. Both Editions are good, but in my opinion, this Standard version is the better option because the only bling offered in the Collector's Edition version is a handful of Achievements and hidden Gems to collect to restore an ancient underwater statue.
Whispered Secrets is one of those sleeper series that everyone forgets about yet, they all have fairly interesting storylines and features that gamers adore. I've always enjoyed these games which include the Everburning Candle, Golden Silence, Into the Beyond, Into the Wind and the Story of Tideville. In the Collector's Edition version, the collectible gems glint with no option to stop the glimmering in the custom mode, and the Amulet used to "charm" animals/turn me into a mermaid is a bit overused and cliche. Some of the Hidden Object Scenes are repeated in the same scene which is a feature I really hate, because HOP's can be boring the first time around, much less a second time. As with all Whispered Secret games, you will find occasional picture clues, that are used to match up to the original scene which somehow exposes a hidden cache or hiding place that wasn't there before (a treehouse that wasn't there before, really?)
The Hidden Object Scenes are very basic, slightly interactive List finds, that are so sparse on objects that they are super easy, and for me, super boring, especially when the scene is repeated moments later. There are also Silhouetted Shape finds and Multiple finds, and one that could qualify for a mini game which I'll describe in the following paragraph. Some scenes require you to use directional arrows to pan left or right as well.
The Mini Games are not bad, but most of them are extremely easy to solve. Below are brief descriptions of some of the puzzles you'll encounter during the demo:
1) Press the take aim button when the marble is in the cross hairs, to shoot the arrow.
2) Find the missing seahorses by interacting with the scene.
3) Move the weapons tokens to the correct slots to complete the image, in a three part puzzle using arrows to pan left or right to the next puzzle.
4) Rotate circle sections to complete the image.
5) Rotate the circle sections to complete the image, clicking on one section may affect other sections.
6) Each time you use the Amulet you play a mini game requiring you to drag the light through every note only once.
7) Restore the picture by sliding square picture tiles using to the one empty square to solve.
8) Interact with items in the horse drawn cart to escape the zombies by finding each silhouetted shape item shown and using that item interactively.
9) Another Amulet mini game where you guide the blue bubble to absorb all the other bubbles from smallest to largest.
The Collector's Edition has 15 Achievements to earn, replayable Hidden Object Scenes and Mini Games, 8 Music Soundtracks, 36 Collectible glittering Gems, 8 replayable Movie Videos, 10 Wallpapers, 11 Workshop Concept Art pictures, a built in Strategy Guide and a Bonus Chapter, enjoy! Show less

I would have given the game 5 stars if the second half was exactly like the first. I enjoyed having the guy with me talking and helping me out. He disappears pretty quickly after the demo which made me sad. I do have a young lady accompanying me but we don't interact very much. I love having people in the games that you stop and talk to and this game had plenty of that!
The only negative was half way through I had to use the hint quite a bit because things weren't as apparent as they were in the first half of the game.
All and all this was an easy going, relatively easy and relaxing game that I really enjoyed! Better than 90% of the other games I've demoed recently. I wish I purchased the CE for the 2 bonus chapters.

The puzzles are mostly easy, except for one, which I could not figure out. HOPs are standard variety. Actions to take are easy to intuit from the surroundings, but becomes more ambiguous in the latter half of the game.
One unique feature of the game is a magical amulet (lower right corner) which glows when it's time to use the amulet to direct an animal to perform a certain action. Be on the look out for that.
Another somewhat unique aspect of the game is to move back and forth among scenes, you click the right hand select button when the cursor is at the BOTTOM of the screen. Most games have you veer right or left, up or down, to travel among the scenes. This game doesn't do that.
The story doesn't make much sense, but if you can look past a nonsensical plot, it's an enjoyable game to play.
I recommend a try out. Show less

Available at BFG since 2016. Review based on completed game. I'm afraid this one was a miss. Certain scenes are good. The trouble is that the storyline is so weak as far as tension and mystery go, that those scenes fall flat. The graphics are nice in places but for me they lack detail. The characters are dull and monotonous, except for the captain at the beginning. The last 1/5 is marginally more ...Show more

Based on the demo (which took all of 45 minutes to complete): Maybe if I could've drank the wine instead of pouring it into that jug, I would've found something to recommend about this game. Simply put, top to bottom, this is the most ludicrous demo I've ever seen. When you have your first "you're kidding me" moment w/i the first few minutes of a game, that's never a good sign, eh? ;) I have two ...Show more
Based on the demo (which took all of 45 minutes to complete): Maybe if I could've drank the wine instead of pouring it into that jug, I would've found something to recommend about this game. Simply put, top to bottom, this is the most ludicrous demo I've ever seen. When you have your first "you're kidding me" moment w/i the first few minutes of a game, that's never a good sign, eh? ;) I have two of the previous games in this series, & based on those, I expected better (not to mention, I've a coupon burning a hole in my pocket, & was seriously hoping to get a new game!). I can only even recommend doing the demo for this if you're in need of a good bellylaugh, as the zombies chasing the cart gave me the best laugh I've had all day, & it's well past my bedtime. :D As for the rest: The graphics weren't good; the mini-games weren't challenging; there was one full HO scene & one mini-scene (ie, a little window w/ six or so objects to find); & the one full scene was only minimally interactive, & visited twice. The production values here are just flat low, which surprises me, as this dev has done much better on previous efforts. More than anything, though, the entire story so far has just been too loopy for words...fantasy is my genre, but this is just NUTS! But I guess I will recommend doing the demo after all. It won't take long, & that zombie/cart scene alone is worth it! :D Show less
I don't recommend this game.
