An exitingly fresh game! It kept me on my toes until the end and throughout the bonus chapter. That is, when I finally opened my eyes again for the analogue world, I heard already the first blackbirds chirp their songs of dawn ...
What starts out as a shockingly gross murder, soon turns into a fantasy surprise bag and a supernatural witch hunt. Not so long ago, I've seen a similar story from another developer. It's the old tale of false accusation and murder in the name of a hypocritical rightousness. In truth we hardly can lay the blame on the witches when they become vengeful.
We certainly must blame the hunters. Hunters chase the innocent, pursue minorities, bully the community: unpleasant fear mongers in dark leather coats who brandish guns, swords and crossbows. Watch out for the treacherous, blood-thirsty glint in their eyes and beware! Those are dangerous barbarians, because they enjoy to kill. Their goal is the killing, not the saving of the world, the purge of evil, or what nonsense they ever will tell you. They shoot first and ask later - if they ask at all. In a more sensible world, they would be urgend to see a doctor. But here they are, on the loose in Amsterdam – and we have even to help this loudmouthed type who's name I already forgot. I was so disappointed that he wasn't eaten by the giant spider at the end.
Until now I didn't know that Amsterdam is inhabited by shapeshifters, too. Originally, they look a bit like an accidental mix of rabbits and elves, and their eyes glow sickly red. Their hare-lip covers a pair of neatly pointed fangs; any vampire could become envious. Although an innocent, harmless folk, their appearance is not ordinary enough - and they naturally provide a perfect target for the hunters. We'll have to rescue them several times.
But frankly, it's not the story which drives this adventure, it's the gameflow and the pacing. We are constantly challenged with new twists, have never time to relax; the next surprises wait already around the corner and thwart any ennui. It seems Grandma Studio skipped none of the grisly clichees: hands shoot out from the floor, mirrors show grimaces, skeletons suddenly move, bats emerge in flocks out of dark places, bloody hands smear over window panes. But the effect is more likely funny, like a ride in the ghost train at the carneval.
We can even chose whether to play it “dark” or “light”. With more or less shocking details, I assume; because I couldn't yet bring myself to play it light mode. But I noticed that in the first scene with the body, there is no difference. We see the poor girl skinned and twitching all the same, be it in dark or in light mode.
We play as Nathaniel, a guy who possesses supernatural abilities due a childhood accident and can “see the unseen” - indicated as usual by glowing runes on our wrist. He has something smug like a divinity student and looks to me a bit lukewarm, mousy and pallid. He also looks as if he could turn into a rodent any minute; maybe he stays too much inside.
The Amsterdam setting is attractive; we visit a house boat, the luxury mansion of a celebrity, a museum with unforeseen cellars, a witch's home, a floating lighthouse, literally gone to pieces. I adored the subtle way of handling animals. We free a mouse from a trap, and cut twice a bird out of tangled ropes - a symbolic and slightly disturbing picture. Once, we even must free the bird first, before we can do something for two men in life danger. LOL, makes somehow sense. Birds are precious, much too many species already on the brink of extinction - whereas humankind spreads in an overpopulation of seven billion … By the way: I liked the frightened stammering of de Vires' two body guards, after their rescue. Very credible voice overs.
Even the music was more than the usual shallow audio stream. Sometimes like suspenseful SFX, working with traffic and industrial noises, sirens, reverberations, ghostly choirs, at times like the soundtrack of an expressionistic black and white movie with dramatic tunes; it captured the mood of the game very well. The sound was wisely set, unobtrusive. I never turned it off, which says much about it's quality. In fact, I even downloaded the tracks - and you know what? Also without game they are surprisingly enthralling, never boring. Congrats, Yaroslav Shchogla :)

Puzzles and mini games are mostly not very challenging, but amusing to play. The best parts are the HOPs ... e.g. a colourful boudoir with cosmetic things, ribbons and hats, a stone carving of a Roman battle, a Native Indian tribe in the museum, attacked by the army, a police-office with evidence board ... HOPs are thematically arranged, greatly varied, mysteriously encrypted, inventive and entertaining, just as we like them. There is one with Ester de Vires, when she is assaulted by magical snakes at the masquerade ball. Everybody is aghast and frightened – but of course there is the one guy who brandishes in midst of the turmoil his smartphone and takes it all up for the social media. I just love this kind of subtle wit.
But what I liked best is the encounter with several big spiders and creepy-crawly bug infestations - and I'm never forced to use pesticide! Finally a dev who is intelligent enough to know that our fingers don't fall off if we grab an item next to a spider, or if we brush away a spider's web by hand. This alone is worth a five star rating. Show less

Unusual murders may seem difficult to solve, but they usually contain a lot more clues than a body that simply disappears without a trace. Naturally, people rarely commit intricate murders that take forever to set up and plan, unless they are in a movie or some kind of video game. Obviously, such crimes are much more exciting to investigate when you play the role of a gifted detective. The Unseen Fears: Body Thief is a hidden object adventure game in which you play the role of a detective who tackles a weird case regarding a string of unusual murders. Your goal is to discover the necessary clues in order to pinpoint a suspect, but given the fact that you possess a few unique abilities as well, the whole adventure turns into quite the thrilling pursuit. Thrilling is an understatement in this 5+ adventure. The plot starts with a victim who was apparently skinned alive using fire, yet all of her clothes are intact in spite of the damage. Your goal is to collect the clues around the murder scene and present them to the detective in charge, and the story gets even more intriguing later on. After being saved from near drowning during your childhood by magical deity, you are given a seal. A special power which gives you the ability to see the "unseen". This proves very helpful as you progress thru this fantastic murder mystery. As for the graphics, they are about as detailed as they can get in the genre, and it’s great to see that the artists managed to create such a suspenseful atmosphere using nothing but static artwork. It’s quite a rush to explore some of the scenes, especially thanks to the neat sound effects and great soundtrack. All in all, The Unseen Fears: Body Thief is a very engaging puzzle game, and quite the challenging hidden object game at the same time. Hence, you can have a lot of fun with it if you enjoy a REALLY good mystery. I loved every minute of this unique game and I love the genre. Show less

I play all of these games on custom mode at an average pace. I always use the stopwatch on my phone when I’m playing (but this game has a timer in the tablet, left corner). I try to complete the minigames but will skip if I become frustrated. I play all the HOS with penalty. I’m just showing how I play because it could take some more or less time.

I really considered buying the CE to this game because I really did like the demo. But 3 things made me choose the SE instead. At the end of the demo we bump into our first Shapeshifters aka/Planet of the Apes lookalikes. I really thought it was a paranormal/mystery/thriller type genre (and it is, that too) but I bummed out to see the fantasy apes take center stage in a crime/mystery game. Second, this game’s CE bonus content didn’t stand out for me. I will usually buy a CE that has a screensaver. The main description of the game says it has “screensavers” but I don’t think it does. And third it mentioned “hunters”. I wish it had specified “witch hunter” not animal hunter as I would have bought the CE if I’d had that clarification. The game play is so good in this game that maybe I will buy the CE for my tablet in the future. I can overlook the fantasy creatures in a mystery but I hope they leave them out if there is a second installment of this game.
It is hard to pin down a genre for this game. It starts out as a crime-horror-paranormal type of thing and swings into a more Sci-Fi feeling by Chapter 3. You don’t see any more of the “skinned” people aside from the demo and the ape men shapeshifters aren’t over used either. You only see those at the end of Chapter 1, and a pinch in Chapter 3. They do not fit into the game imo. There is a bit of “fantasy” here and there too that also didn’t fit. You will see a couple of weird fantasy creatures and some huge spiders that grab people. The game would have been better without those I think.
INVENTORY/DIARY-TABLET
If only all the developers would have it exactly like this……
Inventory items aren’t held long and you actually remember where they go; perfectly done. There's not too much backtracking to place an item. It's usually used in the same room or the one next to it.
Be sure to keep checking the tablet/diary in the left corner as it holds pick up notes that review the story and the cut scenes, which are in order with the pick- up notes. It is also PERFECTLY done! HINT also works as a teleport. The graphics where clear and vibrant on my PC and remained clear stretching out to a larger monitor.
MINI GAMES: I think I played all the mini games in this game which must be a record for me. They are innovative, super fun and mostly game related-- instead of the dexterity/logic type. Chapter 3 has a great one of memory sequences; with swinging hammers, fire, etc. that you must pass that remind me of something I’m used to guiding Lara from Tomb Raider through. It was so well thought out; I just loved it.
Chapter 3 has more of a Sci Fi feel and reminded me of Beyond 1 Light Advent. Chapter 4 has more of an occult/fantasy feel (as does the very end of Chapter 7). Chapter 5 starts with an adorable German Shepard you interact with to proceed that was so clever. What a perfect way to interact with this dog & I wish it had been longer. There was also a fun "make a potion" MG in Chapter 5. There’s a narrated Storybook type HOS (great voiceover) that explains the story more.
Chapter 6 Ester’s House- You play in a modern home and there are jump scares. The amount of detail in this area made me wonder if it was part of the demo at one point.
Chapter 7 The Pier- Starts out beautiful. This whole game takes place at night but the beauty and color make it worth your while hanging out in these areas. I wasn’t a huge fan of where you play the end of the game as it has a complete fantasy feel. There are several mini-games together at the end (like a “boss fight”). The main game ends well & independently from the CE.
All in all, I loved this game from start to finish. Since I wasn’t a fan of the shapeshifters, I’m ok with the fact I didn’t do the bonus play as I read in the game’s main page that the hunters are after the characters we met at the end of the demo.
IF YOU LIKED THIS GAME HERE ARE SOME OTHERS LIKE IT:
1. Beyond: Light Advent (7-2015), consistently great game play with a sci fi feel
2. Whispered Secrets: Ever burning Candle (3/2016) This game is in my top 3 all-time favorites.
Many thanks to Big Fish Games!
And to GrandMa Studios.... Thanks to all involved in making this, & your attention to detail. You are truly a giant here among these developers!

I have to start off by saying I do enjoy the scary HO's the story lines are so much more interesting then the fairy kingdoms. That being said this is one of the few games that does scary right. The story line was awesome it was like a supernatural episode of law and order. The puzzles were engaging and not repetitive and the puzzles made sense!

The story is fairly original and easy to follow. The protagonist is a guy, which some guys should relish. Voiceovers are good. Artwork is excellent, a bit too purple, but very clear and high def. Special effects really add to the ambience.
The background music is one of the better ones out there for these games.

This is by far my favorite game series in years! I am NOT a fan of standard hidden object games. I began playing games like Myst waaayyy back and I prefer puzzle and mini game challenges when I'm playing these newer, shorter games.
This game was way more fun the second time around!! The H/O scenes were all interactive in some way and I found most, if not all the mini games to be right up my alley....new and different, so therefore somewhat challenging right off.....
There are lots of reasons to dig this game! Give it shot if you feel like starting a new adventure!
