You see dead people. This is your gift, this is also your curse, and this time it's personal. You've been contacted by your own brother Patrick, and this can only mean one thing, he's dead! Ghost hunting runs in the family, and Patrick was the host of the popular Ghost Riders show. His latest show took place in the Arden Manor, home to Count Valack Arden, an infamous serial killer. No one knows why this once kind and gentle father, turned into a vicious killer, but it's probably safe to assume it has something to do with the death of his baby girl Helen.
No credible ghost chaser would be caught "dead" without their Astral Glasses that allow you to see past events as well as interact with the astral plane and it's objects. In this Collector's Edition version, there are 44 Hidden Butterflies (and apparently moths are included) that allow you to use them as currency to purchase 14 different Cursed Items. There are also 15 hidden Morphing Figurines, 16 collectible Tarot Cards and Collectible Notes, which always seem to blow away from your hands as soon as you arrive, happens every time!
The Hidden Object Scenes are varied and for the most part, are entertaining, and you can also opt to play a Match 3. There are Interactive List finds, Silhouetted Shape finds, Keyword finds, and even Zoom Zone finds. My favorite however, are the "Spot the Difference" scenes.
The Mini Games are decent, but even on the "Hard" setting, they seem fairly easy to solve. Below are brief descriptions of some of the games you'll encounter during the demo:
1) Rotate the circles to create the symbols shown around the border, rotating one circle may affect others.
2) Swap the black and white tokens, they can only move forward and can only jump opposite colors.
3) Clear all ghosts by moving to a space next to them.
4) Select arrows to mold the lockpick to fit the lock.
5) Click on 4 different colored light filtering options to scan for the ghost in each scene.
6) Use directional arrows to move the planchette and flip over all tiles to create an image.
7) Swap books to create an image on the book spines, wrong selections will cause the books to shuffle.
8) Pick the correct card that matches the description given in the crystal ball.
9) Color the painting according to the numbers, some colors require mixing paints that equal larger sums.
10) Arrange arrows on the board to create a path that will cross all symbols.

You are startled out of a nightmare that felt very real. You have an urgent sense that your brother Patrick may be in danger. As a detective you have your 1st (personal) order of the day, find Patrick! As you open your door to leave, a little girl is standing there with a package "from Patrick", an assortment of his belongings. Then she just simply vanishes and at that moment your long, dangerous adventure begins.
You earn the very good map early on, and your task book shows up right after demo starts, and there is a special pair of glasses. So now you have some important tools to help you on your quest.
The entire demo moved along at a nice pace so you were able to make some good progress in finding clues and getting to your first destination. The investigation got me caught up in the mystery quickly and I was uneasy at times due to the surrounding air of danger and spiritual darkness. There were a few times when a shadow figure passed by the window and that was disturbing. HOWEVER, what had me jumping like a jack-in-the-box was that crazy pop-up that darted onto the left of my screen each time I earned an achievement! Being unaware that I earned one, I wasn't prepared for the big, loud announcement every time, LOL!
I absolutely loved the HOGs. They were fun, challenging and unique. The games were very good and could skip them if you wish. I found them very entertaining and the challenge was good. They could also be played in easy or hard mode. There was an alternative Match 3 for those who do not like the HOGs.
The custom mode was available to us and the hint and skip could be reduced to 15 seconds. The graphics were perfectly perfect, IMO, and the color was excellent for the characters and background. Each scene was full of creepiness and the music was intense, adding to that feeling. The characters were all beautifully done. Excellent job, but Patrick's voice was not so excellent and didn't match his persona...at least not to my ears.
I liked the ample collection of extras. The collectibles were not too difficult to find. I located a satisfying number of them. Also earned some achievements, but not sure what they represented because the banner both popped out and left so quickly, I was unable to read it.
The 90 minute demo felt more like 30, that usually indicates an above average game going at a good pace.
Although it was a very good solid story with promise of lots of entertainment, I have reservations about purchasing. We have seen a disturbing number of very dark, unsettling themes to our Big Fish Games for a long time now. It has become the norm, but this game went into a darker territory that delves into a touchy spiritual area. Stealing souls and eliminating people whether they are good or bad, for whatever reason, makes me very uncomfortable. I know this has been done before in games, but this one just went too far iinto the darkness for me. But of course, there are many gamers who will really enjoy it and have a great time on this journey to find Patrick and others.

Just as you are on your way to check on him, you open your door to find a young girl standing there with a box in her hands. She tells you her name is Helen and hands you the box saying this is all that is left from your brother and then she fades away. Well, you definitely know something is wrong by this point and after you view the DVD enclosed in the box you know that you had best not take too long getting to Patrick. And so begins your journey to a haunted house and your encounter with the ghost of a serial killer, Count Valack Arden, as you try to save your brother and his fiancé, Stephanie.

The graphics are very good and done in the style of the previous games in the Mystery Tales series.
Modes of Gameplay - Casual, Advanced, Hardcore, Custom
Hints and Skips: 15 to 90 seconds
Your tools include an interactive map and a special pair of glasses that you will use to reveal what is hidden.
The HOP scenes are excellent and varied but fairly much the same as those we always see. I don’t say that as a complaint, because I happen to love HOPS and realize that there can’t always be something new but I wish there were more of the HOPS that in this game seem dwarfed by the amount of mini-games. I happen to enjoy puzzles or mini-games but I think the ratio might be two to one in The House of Others. Unfortunately, I found the puzzles more difficult in this game (which should please many of the gamers out there in BFG land) but mainly because I couldn’t understand the directions as they didn’t always make sense. There are a lot of us who enjoy puzzles but I don’t always want them too challenging. I can hear the groans now because there is a faction that calls for more, and also more challenging puzzles. It would be nice to have a separate genre for those gamers who could then enjoy puzzle laden adventure games. Since there isn’t a separate genre at this point, it certainly would be nice if developers would keep an equal balance between mini-games and HOP scenes.

CE VERSION EXTRAS: The CE version of the game has plenty of collectibles and morphing objects to keep us happy. We can collect Tarot cards, Figurines, and Butterflies scattered throughout the game and then there are morphing objects to be found in each scene. I particularly like the feature on the inventory bar that indicates if we have found the collectible butterflies and morphing objects. Yep, there are plenty of achievements to be earned as well as gorgeous wallpapers, music, concept art, strategy guide, and a bonus chapter. There is also a Cursed Items Exhibit where you can display the cursed items you purchase with the butterflies you collect.

As a final thought, I enjoyed the gameplay but I am noticing a very dark trend with recent games. I dislike anything to do with having one’s soul taken, or taking lives to use their souls. Not only is today’s game along those lines but also, if BFG’s weekly blog is correct, then a similar theme is coming right on the heels of today’s game. As I mentioned, I loved the gameplay but the storyline left me a bit disenchanted. I would like a good old-fashioned mystery rather than all of these darker games. Although many of you will undoubtedly love the game, I am not sure I will buy this type of game. If the theme doesn’t bother you then I am sure you will find this to be a very good game. Happy gaming!

The graphics is like eye-candy for me; Sound quality is just right; although in the custom mode other helpful options are available, and I just love it, the special effects fit the story. Nightmares about your brother, and arriving at the haunted mansion will surprisingly give you the creeps as you are worriedly trying to save yourself, your brother, and his love from a crazed serial killer, let alone trying to solve this story of the dead. This ghost story is right on point, so playing the detective fits again. The puzzles are on point with enough challenge and interest. I am glad for the collectibles, notes, morphing objects, the monetary hidden butterflies, and the Tarot cards. There is lots to do in this game, which is a good thing. This game is perfect for hidden objects game lovers. I am purchasing Mystery Tales: The House of Others Collector's Edition ASAP!! Show less

I actually used the stop watch on my cell phone whenever I was playing this. I try and do all the puzzles --although I am not really a mini game fan, unless they are unusual. I will skip them the second I’m annoyed. I do all the HOS without hints & with penalty. I play on “custom” mode. This game has EASY/HARD mode for all the mini games, which is a huge plus for me with Domini. I’m telling you how I play because it may be faster/slower for some.
Aside from interior locations the entire game is played in moonlit areas, at night, with snow on the ground. I loved that you don't carry items all that long so you remember where they go. The items are usually used in the same room or the one next to it. It’s great that it only takes a moment to look over the scene to see where an item should be placed, WITHOUT opening the secondary window. There are MORPHS to locate in each new scene, which I always see as a plus. It has many different types of hidden object scenes to cater to all of us and they are not repeated. The special effects didn’t wash out the scene and each new page. Graphics are vibrant and you play in beautiful locations.
When you open the task book area, there is also a notebook to check every now and then because it holds picked up notes to review the story. It’s a shame you can’t replay the cut scenes because they were worth rewatching.
So far, my favorite games in this series is MT #4 Her own eyes (you collect really amusing death files) and MT #6 The Hangman(which is remarkable because of the interactive details in every scene…. right past the demo you need to click every item in the scene and watch beautiful renderings of ghosts pop up here and there). In this game, MT #7 The house of the others, you only see these interactive details in the demo. Chapter 3 has one more… so be on the lookout for it. Though this isn’t my favorite game in this series, it is still a solid 5 star game with a remarkable bonus play.
WHAT YOU COLLECT & ITS ULTIMATE PURPOSE:
1. 16 collectable cards can be found in the main windows. I missed 2 in the game so idk if
you are rewarded for collecting them as you are in MT #5 (Eye of the Fire). Each of these cards has a historical blurb on the back about a mystical type of person such as Merlin.
2. 44 (I believe) butterflies are collected from the secondary frame windows and you buy items for a room with them. At the end, I only had 41 collected, but it was still enough to buy all the room’s items. The only item that actually does anything is the bird cage so I’m glad I got that item first. It would have been cool if the finished room turned into a wallpaper. I only got 41 of the 44 butterflies so I’m not sure if you are rewarded for getting all the collectibles here or not.
3. 15 morphing cursed items- These were rather large and easy to locate and are only in some scenes. They have their own page too and each item has a description when you click it.
I preferred the collectables in Mystery Tales #4 Her own eyes & I would have preferred a screensaver to any of these collectables.
DEVICE SPECIAL TO THIS GAME: are the “glasses” that alter the visual in a location and show our main characters spin on what happened in a location that can’t be seen, and in the past. We used them first in MT #4, 5 & 6, and I liked using them equally here. I love the ability of the character we play in the MT that has the glasses.
ABOUT BONUS PLAY: The SE stands on its own from bonus play. The bonus story is completely unrelated. A pilot asks, you detective, to help him find two people on an island he hasn’t been able to land his helicopter on to save because a ghost has been intercepting. As the bonus progresses we learn who that ghost is and why he’s being naughty. The bonus play is fantastic and I’m glad I paid the money to play it.
There are 10 ALL BRAND NEW AREAS TO PLAY! Scene 4 of bonus has an adorable pug you help; he was just perfectly rendered.
From what I counted there were 10 more mini games and 5 more HOS. You CONTIUE collecting items at the end of the SE and into the bonus play.
STRATEGY GUIDE & TO GIVE YOU AN IDEA HOW LONG BONUS PLAY IS:
There is an in game 53pg walkthrough guide. Bonus play time compared to demo,
Chapter 1 is- 3 pgs. Chapter 2 is- 11 pgs. (& 1 sentence on the 12th pg.)
& bonus chapter 12PGS
IF YOU LIKED THIS GAME TRY THESE:
1. Mystery Tales #4 Her own eyes, MT #5 Eye of the Fire, & MT #6 The Hangman. Gameplay is identical to this.
2. Whispered Secrets: Ever burning Candle
Huge hugs to all of you at Big Fish, and Domini Games that created this great game!! I am one of your biggest fans. Show less

5 Chapters plus a Bonus Chapter – Strategy Guide: 51 pages
OVERVIEW: Detective! More family drama awaits you! What trouble has your brother gotten himself into this time? Race against time to save your brother and his assistant, also his fiancé. As a producer for the reality television show, “Ghost Riders,” he has gotten more than he bargained for while filming an episode in a desolated, spooky old mansion, once inhabited by the serial killer, Count Valack Arden. While filming this show, the Count takes over your brother’s body and his fiancé is kidnapped by this dastardly ghost! This Count is planning to use black magic to resurrect his daughter’s soul into the body of his assistant. You better act fast or you may end up with a serial killer for a brother!
Such a great game! It also appears to be a lengthy game as well. This is another top-notch, puzzle-intense game from Domini. (Side note: I looked all through the game, and there are no annoying helpers hiding anywhere in the rafters of this old mansion!) It will appeal to those who love detective stories and paranormal reality shows. The graphics are dark and somewhat spooky. The story is unique and well-written. The pace if good with plenty of activities and intrigue to keep the player’s interest. As with most Domini games, there are quite a few collectibles. You collect butterflies to purchase items for a Cursed Objects Exhibit, morphing objects, figurines, and cards of people. You get a set of gimmicky spectral glasses to see the spirit world. It was an automatic purchase for me!
HOP SCENES: They are creatively designed. They include a list of items which include a puzzle within the scenes. The puzzle is a switch puzzle reversing the placement of black and white tiles. There are two silhouette scenes, one of which requires the player to match up two like items before the silhouette is removed. There is also a spot-the-difference scene. You also have the option to play a Match-3 game in lieu of the scenes.
PUZZLES: Domini games are puzzle-rich. They also are one of the few developers who offer the choice between “casual” and “hard” versions of their puzzles. They are varied, numerous, and are all very creative. They include a moving tiles puzzle to restore an image, a spot-the difference puzzle between two pictures, a variation of a chess puzzle to trap a ghost, a sequence puzzle, a paint-by-number puzzle, a sequence puzzle, a connection puzzle to link to connect gems, and a lock pick puzzle. There is also a variation of a Twenty Questions puzzle to answer questions in which you pick a card with the correct response.
LEVELS: Casual, Advanced, Hardcore, Custom
Hints and Skips: 15 to 90 seconds
EXTRAS:
Map is provided as you play the game
34 Achievements
Replay of 18 HOP scenes (Saw nothing concerning puzzles)
Collect 44 butterflies to purchase objects for the Cursed Objects Exhibit, 15 figurines, 16 Cards of people, and 15 Morphing objects
Spectral glasses to see the spirit world
13 Wallpapers, 11 Concept Art, Music
HERE ARE THE DETAILS (SPOILERS) FOR THOSE WANT MORE INFORMATION ON THE HOP SCENES AND PUZZLES IN SEQUENCE
HOP SCENES: You can play a Match-3 game instead.
(A) List of items (there is puzzle within this scene). (B) Silhouette. (C) Spot the differences between items and their mirror images. (D) Silhouette. Very interactive. Must match up items with each other before removing them.
PUZZLES: Choice between casual and hard settings for most puzzles.
A. Moving tiles puzzle. Rotate four circles to create four images. Moving one affects the other.
B. Switch puzzle (within first HOP scene). Switch the position of black and white tokens on a grid.
C. Spot-the-differences puzzle. Spot differences between two pictures.
D. Variation of a chess puzzle. Move tokens to a corner and trap two ghosts to remove them.
E. Lock pick puzzle. Bend a bobby pin to match the tumblers in a lock.
F. Sequence puzzle. Using arrows, move a planchette on a Ouija board so that tiles are removed to restore a picture.
G. Switch puzzle. Switch books to restores 3 images.
H. Twenty Questions. Novel puzzle in which you answer a series of questions from picking the proper card from a series of given cards.
I. Paint-by-Number. Paint a picture by matching up colors with numbers. You will need to do some math to come up with some of the colors.
J. Matching puzzle. Match up bottles on the outside with those on the inside.
K. Connection puzzle. Connect all gems without crossing lines.

The CE version has 44 butterflies to find. The more butterflies found, the more items that can be purchased for the girl's bedroom in the Extra section. There are 15 tarot cards and 15 morphing objects to find, both of which earns its own achievement and a room to display items found. There are a gazillion achievements to be had.
I do wish there had been jigsaw puzzle pieces tied in to achievements garnered to extend the game play. I am not much a fan of music, wallpapers, and re-playable HOS/puzzles. The ability to go back through the game to find collectible items missed would be better than the music, WP etc always included.
The artwork is fantastic, but definitely on the purple side. There are lots of special effects and as ghost stories go, not scary or gloomy at all.
The bonus chapter is completely unrelated to the main game, but has a bit of a similar theme to the main game.
This is a game that would be fun to revisit, which is the highest compliment I can give.

Production was really well done, best game I've played, ever. The story line appeals to my twisted sense of humor, how they made stuff look innocent and creepy at the same time is beyond me. I believe attraction to any game is roughly 60% about the music. The music is great, comes in at the right times, the sounds aren't obnoxious. The last few reviews I've given on recent games have not been all that favorable. Same old games.
