At last, in a departure from this developer’s worn out series it has taken a giant leap into this awesome new game The Keeper of Antiquities. I love games from this developer and have always found them to be well-crafted and long, offering great gameplay and, if you choose the CE, lots of extra goodies. The graphics are very much like those in the familiar Witches’ Legacy and Fear for Sale series where the artists are terrific at creating dark fantasy worlds.
You play the game as Alexandra who’s Uncle Paul has disappeared and you are on a mission to find him. When you arrive at your uncle’s shop you stumble upon a book and find your uncle trapped within its pages. As you work to free your uncle you discover a much deeper and sinister meaning to the mystery and the nightmarish book that soon will trap you and a friend as well. Now you must not only save your uncle but others as well as yourself.
Your tools include a terrific, interactive map that not only shows you where you have tasks to accomplish but also where you might have available extra goodies to find. Your other tool is a fire salamander that will help when a little flame is needed.
The HOPS include a lot of those familiar windowed mini-HOPS where we must find a specified number of parts scattered around the scene to complete the needed item. The full-blown HOPS are excellent but I did find some items difficult to find as the scenes were a bit dark. A great thing with the HOPS is that they are very puzzle-like and contain mini-games to find some needed items. The mini-games are excellent and some are tricky to complete. I found most of the minis quite enjoyable, but I love solving puzzles so Keeper of Antiquities is perfect for me.
The CE version of the game is chock full of extra goodies. There are puzzle pieces to find as well as different sets of collectibles and morphing objects. I had a hard time spotting some of the morps so I am thankful the map lets me know where something might have been missed in a scene. Yes, I love CEs and I admit that I am almost compulsive about finding all of the extra goodies in a game. Along with all of those extras to find we have the usual standard extras such as the bonus game and strategy guide. Keeper of Antiquities is what every developer should look at when it comes to formulating an excellent package that is CE worthy.
Congratulations to this development team for stepping outside the box and giving us an exciting new game that will keep us thinking and entertained for hours. A lot of thought and creativity has gone into Keeper of Antiquities and I am enjoying each step as I save others from an eternal nightmare. Of course the game was one that I loved, but please try the demo to see if Keeper of Antiquities is a game you will enjoy. Show less

GRAPHICS: Typical bright and colorful of 2016. Not really my favorite, but good visibility.
HOPS: Around 15 or more HOPS, scenes are used twice. Didn’t enjoy the HOPS as much here (not great to look at) but they’re clear. I think the main fun is in the adventure part of the game.
PUZZLES: Mix
SOUNDS: 4 (Really worth getting the CE if you like the music, since there’s LOTS of it! 27 tracks, using piano, violin, cello, guitar and keyboard, 7 of which are 3 minutes long AND fade out at the end –no abrupt ends.)
HINT: Guides and leads
DIFFICULTY LEVELS: 4
MAP: TRAVEL, and extremely useful with indicators. I used the map A LOT in this game!
INVENTORY: lockable
JOURNAL: A notebook has goals.
CHARACTERS: Your uncle from the antiques shop and others you meet. Real people, good voice overs with lip-sync. Very likeable.

The game is almost like a little masterpiece, with every detail meticulously drawn or painted and brought to life. The soundtrack is ambient and original, perfectly tuned for each scene. It reminded me of the older Artifex Mundi games in that sense.
The minigames were all what we've played before BUT the devs clearly went out of their way to put a new twist on all of them. Kudos to them for delivering such a treat!
Nearly forgot to add that it's also a very decent length! Show less

You munch on another chocolate, another message. After the 3rd chocolate, it recommends you save some chocolates for other guests! Then there's the ship in a bottle where the water moves when you pick up the bottle.
2- there are MANY hidden object games to play. The standard for this developer is picking up an item and picking up fragments or objects related to the open object to complete. Usually it's only 6 objects to find, but just enough to make it interesting when finding an object to use in your progress.
3- there are many rooms to visit, many actions until your journey ends
4- The mini puzzles are easy or very manageable.I actually found several of the HOS had 1-2 items really hard to find, but you can switch to mahjong style matching to complete items not found.
5- If you play on advanced mode, the 1st 3rd of the game I found somewhat hard to figure out what to do next, and in the middle and latter part of the game, actions and objects to find become more logical and easier to intuit (just the opposite of most games going from easy to difficult).
6- The devs have done an outstanding job in their creativity for turning ordinary objects into magical items. It's hard to describe--you have to play the game in order to be dazzled by their creativity.
7- this is a LONG game. The story is well developed in its beginning, middle and end. It is a complete story and you don't feel like they truncated the end in order to lure you into a bonus chapter seen in the CE. It's a complete game on its own, and therefore worth its full value when purchased.
If there's a flaw with the game, I wish the characters were more attractive. The characters are well drawn and authentic looking, but without movie star or model attractiveness.
Yes, I look exactly like these folks, but when I'm playing a game as the protagonist, I like to think of myself as svelte, tall, and drop dead gorgeous, LOL. Just makes the fantasy more fun. Show less

Arthur Bradley was an author in the late 1700's who began to write stories for his daughter Rose after her mother passed away. His last book, Book of Nightmares, was never finished and eventually ended up in a small antique shop owned by your Uncle. When Alexandra hadn't heard from her Uncle Paul for a few days, she decided to pay him a visit at the Antique Shop. Uncle Paul's nowhere in sight, and Alexandra gets the feeling something's very wrong. Her instincts served her right when a thug appears out of nowhere demanding the book she had just picked up. After gathering her wits and composure, she does a little snooping around the shop, hoping to find some sort of clue that will shed light upon this dark situation. What she discovers is that Paul Anderson's Antique Shop is no ordinary shop, and his antiques are no ordinary antiques. Some of Uncle Paul's antiques are actually very powerful artifacts, so powerful that they require "Keepers" to protect them from those who seek their powers! The Book of Nightmares may very well become Alexandra's personal nightmare, if she can finish the book from the inside!
I don't know about you, but I will be a little leary about visiting antique shops in the future because apparently, nothing ever goes well inside them! This is a new series that seems to have a lot going for it, decent graphics, and flawless mechanics above all else. The Collector's Edition has a ton of extra features, Achievements to earn for each milestone, 33 Morphing Objects, 36 Memories of the Past Jigsaw Puzzle pieces that allow you to assemble the puzzles to learn more of the storyline and use as Wallpapers, and 33 different Hidden Collectibles in 5 different categories, Gramophone records, Galaxy's, Portraits, Horn of Plenty and Cages with Birds. I was disappointed after the demo when I realized that all of the collectibles were grouped together in a small section of each scene making it impossible not to find them instantly. Seem's Uncle Paul collects some unusual items, one of which is Spark, a Fire Salamander that will be your sidekick in this adventure and help out by shedding some light to the dark and of course, giving you a "spark" of flame when you need it the most. I really wish that sidekicks would stay in the genre they belong (fantasy themes) when you are playing a game that is trying to remain realistic yet supernatural, it would be nice to have a lighter and a multi purpose tool that I hang onto for the whole game.
The Hidden Object Scenes are varied and multi layered with Interactive List finds, finding items that match Keywords in a story, and Silhouetted Shape finds, most of which have interactive puzzles within to make them more entertaining. There are several Zoom Zone HOP's where you find 5 items scattered around the room such as stereo parts, instruments or gears.
The Mini Games range from super simple quickies to multi-layered puzzles. Below are brief descriptions of some of the games you'll encounter during the demo:
1) Select pairs of orange symbols on the outside of the picture that comprise the blue symbols shown in the center.
2) Select badges in the correct sequence as demonstrated.
3) Select plates to flip to reveal an image, selecting one affects others, when all sections have been flipped, swap sections to complete the image.
4) Spot the differences between two pictures.
5) Keep the target reticle in the center of the green circle until it reaches the umbrella target.
The Collector's Edition has 9 Wallpapers, 11 Concept Art pictures, 3 Screensavers, 4 Music Soundtracks, 12 Achievements, 26 Hidden Object Scenes, 26 Mini Games, 33 Hidden Collectibles, 36 hidden Jigsaw Puzzle pieces, 33 Morphing Objects, a built in Strategy Guide and a Bonus Chapter, enjoy! It also magically reproduces and generates other books within the book. We (as niece Alexandra) slip thus in and out of our own and other people's nightmares, we travel trough time and space to find the core of evil.
Of course one could ask whether it's a good idea to create the enemy in form of a book, nowadays, whilst dyslexia spreads in our schools like the flu. But as it turns out, the evil book, “the abyss of your worst nightmares”, is in fact ----- SPOILER ----- more a purple toy monster that bares rows of pointy teeth ... which are so long that they would puncture the monster's own lips if it'd ever try to close its mouth. Funny, not in the least threatening.
I wonder whether this game was planned as a dark, uncanny game, but in course of making developed more into a fantasy light adventure. It appears a bit undecided yet. Not scary enough to be eerie, but not much humor either. It could well tolerate a bit more of it. Like the doll which jumps from a pendulum clock like a cuckoo, but squeaks like Mickey Mouse. Or Marquis de Laplace, especially in his dissolved state in the bonus chapter. Often I had the feeling that the game is just unintentionally funny. like the ghostly footprints of naked feet on the floor - whilst we distinctly hear the clack clack of heels.
This is the first game of a new series. Now, what's new in Keeper of Antiques? We have for the first time a proper cast list for the voice actors! Thank you for this improvement, Elefun. Now we only need the ability to stop this list from scrolling too quickly past ... in order to read the names. Otherwise I didn't find many novelties. Since Alexandra speaks with the voice of Emma Roberts, the game at first reminds of a Fear for Sale edition. Later we dive into fantasy worlds à la Witches Legacy with entertaining, varied HOPs, for example silhouettes, interactive lists, stories with highlighted words. Nothing new, just the solid quality-play which we are accustomed to from this dev. But to be fair, there never will be a demand for new things in an antique shop ;)
However, I was slightly disappointed that also puzzles and mini games are the same easy-peasy, fool-proof stuff which Elefun provides from time immemorial. This would have been the opportunity to revise the difficulty level and finally create puzzles for grown ups.
If there is something new to discover, then most likely in the music. We may download astonishing 27 tracks, that's over one hour music! Although eleven are borrowed from recent WL and FFS games. Of the 16 new compositions, a few have a tendency to Ambient and Minimal. An interesting development; I've never heard Minimal in the highly symphonic Big Fish world before.
The background sound is brilliant as always, a plurality of inventive noises, from the sharp snap of a guillotine to the shriek of an iron grate or the sloshing sound of ink drops. Did you know that the whole game contains over 1600 different SFX sounds?
The hint-giving fairy in my inventory bewildered me a bit. There is in the whole game no fairy. Would a magnifier not have been more appropriate? An antique dealer has all the time to decipher small engravings or check ancient paintings.
Confusing is also that uncle Paul and Arthur Bradley, the author of the nightmare book, look very similar with their shaved heads. It's quite easy to mistake the one for the other. I mean, why not give Arthur a hairdo from 19th century? Sideburns, whiskers? He does look too modern anyway.
But what bothered me most is the poison which we must apply on the snappy plants. Yes, I know, these are fantasy plants. But it gives the completely wrong idea. One simply doesn't use herbicides, not whilst the whole world tries to rescue the last bees from Monsanto and glyphosate. Elefun always restrained of using biocides in games. I hope they won't start a new fashion now.
“From now on, you are the Keeper of Artifacts,” says uncle Paul when he presents Alexandra with the key of the antique shop. I wonder how the girl will occupy the powerful but tricky position of a “Keeper”. What winks nervously when I look into the mirror is a slightly dreamy, sheepish plain Jane. Seemingly not quite made of the sterner stuff of adventurous heroines. But probably her looks deceive; we'll see :)
CE or SE? For the soundtrack I would clearly say CE. Many tunes are inaudible or shortened in the game. For the story … hm. The main game has a proper ending. If you want to know what you miss with the Standard Edition, read my review of the CE. Show less
