After your harrowing escape from the Dark Army by blowing up a major dam, things went from bad to worse when you realized that somehow the Dark Warrior escaped. Now the balloon you are in is out of control and even though your uncle Colin and Farador managed to jump you couldn’t quite make it and your balloon’s basket is now hanging precariously on the side of a canyon. After losing consciousness in the crash you finally awaken and thus begin the latest adventures of Alice and her companions.
This developer is my favorite and I know that when I purchase one of their games I certainly get a lot of bang for the money. FIVE-BN Games doesn’t skimp when creating great scenes and excellent storylines for their games. I have enjoyed all of the series they have developed but my enchantment began with House of 1000 Door series. They have a couple of excellent sci-fi type games with Forbidden Secrets Alien Town being my favorite followed by Eternal Journey Lost Atlantis. Of course my other favorites are the Lost Lands and Darkness and Flame games. I always know that I will find exactly what I am looking for when I play a FIVE-BN game.
The HOPS have a great blend of varying styles but the game isn’t overloaded with them. There are some excellent puzzles and even though some might find them easy, I find enough challenge with the puzzles to keep me happy.
It goes without saying that the game was an instant buy for me since I think this developer always creates a quality product and this is a game I wanted to play. That being said, I did notice that the proof reading for the dialog left a bit to be desired and that is unusual as I’ve never noticed it previously. In the “old days” BFG handled the proof reading and the quality of that process has significantly declined in recent years. So although there were some mistakes in the dialog but it didn’t bother me too much, at least not enough to keep me from buying the game. The Dark Side does seem to get off to a slow start with all of the mundane tasks you must complete very early on but if you can stick with it the game becomes much better. There were times I found myself holding my breath as I had near encounters with the Dark Warrior. It is my hope that you will try the demo for Darkness and Flame the Dark Side and that you will enjoy is as much as me. Happy Gaming! Show less

From the dream team that brought New York Mysteries and Lost Lands comes another epic master piece. Darkness and Flame 3: The Dark Side. This sequel to Darkness and Flame: Missing Memories is an awesome adventure equally as stunning as it's predecessor. This was a must buy for me. Another excellent episode in the Darkness and Flame series, which is a continuation of the previous story. It also features the same main characters (your uncle Colin and Farador) and just enough familiarity to make old fans feel welcome. Alice is part of the eternal battle between Darkness and Flame; with the help of the magical Phoenix tattoo on her arm she's ready for another. In the previous story Alice was sure she had defeated the Dark Warrior but he survived and the quest continues. Once again Alice must attempt to conquer the Dark Warrior and destroy the Darkness utilizing her phenomenal powers and a new strategy. Will she succeed with her endeavor in this incredible journey? Find out in this face paced and exciting third installment. What awaits you will blow your mind!!! Kudos to Big Fish and Five-BN developers for creating this wonderful series. This addition to the series exceeded my expectations and Darkness and Flame is destined to be a FAN FAVORITE of the fantasy-adventure genre. Cheers! Show less

Finally a game that was fun *and* challenging, without tons of HOP's. Some mini-games were easy; others were more difficult. There were times in the game that I really needed to think about what to do next. Thank goodness for the map because you go all over the place. Great game with gorgeous graphics. Voiceovers could have been better but that doesn't knock a star off for me.

Not your typical game. A great story line and good action. This game is well worth the money and I'll look forward to seeing another. I played the first game as well and loved it. It's not too hard for the beginning player but presents a challenge to the more advanced player.

I've played so many games lately where it seems like a chore to finish the entire game. There has been a rash of so many uninteresting games that I feel I have to force myself to finish them just so I've gotten my money's worth! But this game had me hook, line and sinker from beginning to end! I love post-apocalyptic storylines (Walking Dead, Jerico, The Day After) and I love how Darkness and Flame takes me on a journey. Not only did I become immersed in the plot, but at times I felt anxiety, I wanted to say "run Alice, he's coming!"
After the demo, I played one of the most amazing mini-games, one that gave me 2 minutes to escape a labyrinth of rooms and corridors, before I was captured by a newly-turned darkness victim, as he taunted me "I can smell you, I know where you are" I'm not talking about one of those games where you lead a character through a maze on a tiny board with only a small flashlight beam to see what's in front of me with. I had to figure out which door to take, which hallway to enter, I had to pick up a ladder to get to a hole in the ceiling that was practically not noticeable. I had to find tools, and figure out which items I might need, and remember where I needed to use them, and the whole time I was hearing the darkness taunt me with his creepy voice, watching the clock tick down, hearing the thump-thump of my virtual heartbeat. I've played thousands of games, but I've never felt as immersed in the game, as I did not only in this mini-game but at several climactic scenes, all the way to the cliff-hanger ending scene! Of course, it's not like that for the entire game, but if a developer is able to make a person feel ANY emotion while playing a game, then they have done their job, and done their job well, so bravo Five-BN, bravo!
Why only 4 Stars you may ask? The only reason I knocked off a Star was that I prefer the CE version over this SE version. Not only are there several Collectible categories and Morphing Objects to find in each scene, but finding all Morphs and completing a Collectible category unlock 20 Bonus Puzzles in the Extra's menu. Here's a recap of my review to help you decide which version, if either is right for you:
Alice was just an ordinary girl trying to survive in a harsh post-apocalyptic environment. In the blink of an eye, her life changed drastically, after discovering a seemingly ordinary box. The unassuming box contained a beautiful Phoenix, and from that day forward, Alice became one with the Phoenix. Her beautiful fiery red hair turned silver, and a glowing Phoenix tattoo appeared on her arm, a constant reminder that things will never be ordinary again! Alice has been chosen to be the burning Flame in the Darkness, but the Darkness is relentless. The Darkness is drawn to the Flame, and the hunt won't end until the Flame has been extinguished!
The Collector's Edition version has all the extra features a gamer could ask for, but to be honest, I would have purchased this game at full price, had I known I would enjoy it as much as I did! On the Custom Setting mode, you can disable the cursor from turning into a hand when it scans across a collectible or morph, which is a fantastic feature, for those of us who want a little more challenge. In the CE version, each scene has a Morphing Object (30) and a Collectible (42) from 6 different categories (6 Rings, 8 Origami, 8 Broaches, 7 Gold Statues, 6 Jade Frogs, 7 Lotus Flowers) The objects are small and the morphing objects morph slowly, and are blended into the scenery fairly well, unlike some games where everything sticks out like a sore thumb and practically screams "here I am"!
The Hidden Object Scenes are far and few between but it's the same way in the other two Darkness and Flame games. There are only two HOS available within the demo, a very Interactive Listed Item find and a Progressive, Interactive, Silhouetted Shape find where you find items and place them back into the scene to progress, such as finding a key to unlock a case that has an item inside that can be used on another item, and so forth. There are no alternate type puzzles, but some of the HOP's have smaller puzzles to solve. After the demo, it seems that the HOP's become even more interactive. I found myself anticipating the next HOP, a feature I rarely find entertaining in games lately, because items are just laying out in the open, they don't even attempt to make them "hidden" in today's HOPA games.
The Mini Games are decent but a bit easy to solve during the demo. After the demo, more complex puzzles are introduced, but they are all pretty doable and not too frustrating. Below are brief descriptions of some of the games you'll encounter during the demo:
1) Choose the correct stones to climb the wall.
2) Use the magnet to find scissors in the water.
3) Click arrows to move a key to the lock w/o running into obstacles.
4) Swap fan sections to complete image.
5) Swap turtles to their color-coded slots.
6) Choose 2 symbols to match the center symbol on steps.
7) Use arrows to move a ball through a maze to the hole.
The Collector's Edition version has 9 Wallpapers, 7 Concept Art pictures, 14 Movie Videos, 8 Music Soundtracks, 21 re-playable Mini Games, 22 Achievements to earn, 42 Hidden Collectibles (6 Rings, 8 Origami, 8 Broaches, 7 Gold Statues, 6 Jade Frogs, 7 Lotuses) 30 Morphing Objects, 7 Puzzles (earned by completing Collectible categories & Morphing Object finds) 20 Bonus Games, 6 Main Chapters + Bonus Chapter, and a built-in Strategy Guide, enjoy!

I like the Darkness and Flame games a lot. I own the first ones and will probably eventually get this one. After the demo I see no rush. I read the only 4 reviews given so far on this game and I went into it with eyes wide open. I have to say that very early in the game you notice the graphics are still pretty good but nothing at all about the voice or character body language matches up. There are very awkward character poses that if it were any other game I'd have laughed at and just quit early because I'd know it wouldn't get more impressive from there.
There are some new puzzles, which is great. The storyline, honestly, doesn't make a lot of sense. ***Spoiler, but again it's the demo so you have to expect it a little*** A tornado flings everyone apart, only one of you is hurt. You end up in a "village" of two people in a cave who are "hidden" yet you find them pretty easily and they're excited to help you though they are supposed to live in terror of the Dark. You find your uncle and friend...and the Darkness. No one screams, no sign anything is happening, everyone is calm like "this happens all the time...oh well" and moves along.
It doesn't draw you in like the others in the series. Born of Fire and Missing Memories had things to draw you in early in the game and keep you there. At this point you don't even care about Uncle and the other friend (who I literally care so little about I don't remember his name), you just want to know who the new guy is. That's not enough for me to pay for.
The graphics are decent but get rather blurry in motion scenes, as if they zoom but don't redo the graphics and just let them look dumpy...rush job in post sort of thing. The audio just feels weird. Nothing even remotely syncs up like I'm watching poorly done anime dubs. Scenes like reuniting with Uncle and you hear something like, "I'm so glad you are okay, I was so worried" but what you see is them standing 40 feet apart and she's got her hand on her hip like a snarky teenager thinking "whatever, dude". Just doesn't engage you. I'm not 100% certain what the "storyline" is in this one, just get away from the Darkness. I didn't have things to look for on the side, just pieces that later fit into puzzles. At least the map takes you back and forth several scenes so you don't have to run it. And the cut scenes are long and hardly worth watching, except the last in the demo.
I don't want anyone to read my review and make that the deciding factor in whether or not you buy it. Try the demo first and see if it's something you enjoy. It wasn't up to my standards for a game in a series I enjoyed but that doesn't mean you'll feel the same. I recommend the game but only the demo until you decide YOU like it. Show less

Mostly same old same old. I’ve played this game dozens of times under different titles. And I think this entry into HOPA land wins for the most keys needed to open whatever. I didn’t count the shovels, knives, screw driver, sickles, 6 of this charm, 3 of this token, finding and using the ingredients for the magic potion, collecting the fireflies…. Been there, done that, a hundred times. When will these talented developers find some new ideas? Everything looks great but that’s not quite enough these days. The technology is there. Where are the story tellers?
Anyhow taken in small daily doses this is an exceptional game. Enjoy the visuals while you have a bit of fun. When you start to snooze, save and get back tomorrow. I rate this a 4 because I’m a tough marker (I’ve yet to give a 5 to any game, 5’s are sacred). A bit of originality would def make it a five for me. Everything else is there. I recommend this game.
