Like all moms, for Mary her Sophia was the apple of her eye and her heart.

Haunted by strange curses from her orphanage days, Mary never knew the story of her dark past until the day she received that strange, mysterious letter.

Never in her wildest dreams did she fear that fate would wipe away the peaceful serenity of her life.

The sweetest songs are those that tell of broken hearts.

You simply can't go wrong when choosing between the Standard Edition or the Collector's Edition version of Darkarta: A Broken Heart's Quest. Personally, I loved the Morphing Objects and Cursed Memory Items that are available within the Collector's Edition version. They are really well-done features and not always easy to spot, so I strongly recommend the CE version. Otherwise, both versions are phenomenal, the storyline is really intriguing, the graphics are wicked good, the Mini-Games are excellent and believe it or not, I even loved the Hidden Object Scenes, which is something a rarely say nowadays. I'll take that one step further, I looked forward to the Hidden Object Scenes!
It seems like the games lately are getting shorter, and offering less, but that isn't the case with Darkarta! There are 7 lengthy chapters (+Bonus Chapter in the CE version) and those chapters aren't lengthy because they are filled with a lot of back and forth nonsense, they are chapters filled with meaningful tasks to get from point A to point B, refreshing puzzles to solve using logic, and HOP's that make you think. You will feel like you actually get your money's worth out of this game, and if you've had the privilege of speaking with this dev, I'm sure you'll understand why this game is so incredible, because they poured their heart and soul into this game, and I'd be very disappointed if Felix didn't make arrangements for the next installation of Darkarta! Here's a recap of my review to help you decide which version is right for you (notice I didn't say "if either" this time?:
Everyone who lives here knows these Isles are cursed by The Master of Dark Arts. During a full moon, Darkarta the immortal rises once again to search for the One with a pure soul, an innocent heart he so desperately needs to complete his never-ending Quest. A cast Spell of Immortality by the hands of his dying lover has cursed Darkarta to an eternity of mourning, an eternal Broken Heart. His Broken Heart's Quest is the reason you have returned to this place, of which you have little memory of. The Master of Dark Arts has deceived you and your family, and your daughter Sophia is now in grave danger. Can a mortal defeat that which is immortal?
The Hidden Object Scenes are some of the best I've ever seen! It's no secret that I'm not a huge HOS fan because nowadays the devs simply aren't creative with them. Usually, the objects aren't "hidden" they are just scattered around the scene. This dev, however, proves that HOP's are still relevant, and if done correctly, can be quite entertaining! I loved how interactive each HOP was, and found the puzzles within to be really fun. There are Interactive List Finds (if you hover the cursor over the word it will show you the items Silhouetted Shape) My favorites were the Interactive Progressive Silhouetted Shape Finds, they were highly interactive with lots of puzzles and clues to apply. There is an alternate Match 3 game if you aren't thrilled about the HOP's.
The Mini-Games range from, fairly easy to solve, to more detailed and complex, yet doable. This is a puzzle-heavy adventure game, but there are still plenty of HOP's to keep everyone happy. Most of the puzzles are within the highly interactive HOP's, many of which are very entertaining and creative puzzles! One of my absolute favorite Mini-Games was in the second chapter I believe, and you had to make it past several armored guards by interacting with each row, applying clues and solving their puzzles to figure out which path to take, if you chose wrong, you had to start over! Below are brief descriptions of some of the games you'll encounter during the demo:
1) Choose items in the drawing to logically fill in the sentence.
2) Rotate the positive & negative charges to complete the circuit.
3) Spot 7 differences between the split screen pictures.
4) HOP puzzle: Swap symbols correctly according to the clues.
5) HOP puzzle: Select gems correctly by trial and error.
6) HOP puzzle: Guide the gem to 2 symbols shown in the clue.
7) Restore the painting by guiding tokens to the correct slots.
8) Select the correct animals based on their silhouette shape.
9) Select 2 hand positions used to create each animal silhouette.
10) HOP puzzle: Swap tiles to complete the image.
11) HOP puzzle: Rotate or swap tri-colored gem to match base.
The Collector's Edition version is crammed full of extra's: 12 Concept Art pictures, 33 Wallpapers, 27 Movie Cutscene Videos, 12 Music Soundtracks, 35 Achievements to earn, 17 re-playable Hidden Object Scenes, 32 re-playable Mini-Games (WOW!) 30 non-linear Cursed Memories, 28 Morphing Objects, Collectible Elixir Flowers, a Comic Book Story-Nagina: An Untold Love Story (a comic book style story about Anantha's childhood and early adult life) 7 Main Chapters (A Broken Heart's Quest) +Bonus Chapter (Rising of the Phoenix) and a built-in Strategy Guide, enjoy! I prefer the CE, but if you don't care about Morphing Objects (as the above reviewer noted), the SE would probably suit you fine. Lots to do, a jump map that shows tasks, an M3 can often be substituted for HOs, and lots can be customized. I think anyone from a HOPA newbie to dedicated Expert players would enjoy this game.

REVIEW FROM COMPLETED GAME AND BONUS
Wow, what a game. This is the first time ever that I had a tear in my eye. If you love a great story line, then this is the game for you.
In this main game you play Mary to rescue your daughter Sophia.
There is:
* Voiceovers (with dialogue);
* Casual, Advanced, Expert and Custom modes of play;
* Interactive map;
* Fully integrated Journal;
* Find 28 morphs and 30 memories.
The graphics are gorgeous with plenty of colour and sharp well-defined scenes. I loved going through each scene, not knowing what to expect next. Sound is good and the music is orchestral and quite haunting.
The mini-games are mainly straightforward, silhouette and putting items back. Some of these had quite a good challenge. However, if you get stuck trying to find that elusive item, then you can play Match-3 instead.
There are a huge variety of mini-games to play and I loved every one of them. There are games in there for everyone - from puzzles to memory games, etc. I'm sure you will find your favourite ones in there.
Throughout the main game there are 30 memories and 28 morphs to find. The morphs change from a snake to an eagle and morph quite slowly - around every 10 seconds I think. Once you see the eagle, then you can click on it - you just have to wait. A hand DOES NOT hover over the morph but they are not too hard to spot. The memories are Sophia's toys, etc which are easier to spot. If you miss any during the game or want to do them later, then you can do them at the end of the game. The interactive map tells you what morphs and memories are in each scene.
So, do you get the CE or SE? In the bonus game you play Shukra, the Grand Master of the Indus School of Magic. If you are thinking about getting the SE of this game, I would reconsider because the bonus is integral with the main game, so you won't get the whole story.
In the CE, there are also 35 Achievements in the Hall of Fame, 32 replayable mini-games and 17 replaying HOPs and a comic book love story telling you all about the love story triangle between Anantha, Aneeha and Nagin - well worth reading.
The game is really long which took me most of the week playing in the evenings. Its a complex heart wrenching story that will tug at your heart strings.
Overall a terrific game and so worth buying. Well done to the developers. I am now a loyal fan and look forward to many more stories to come.
Happy playing fishies - most definitely recommended. Show less

Alas, this is now too timely. One wishes that such events were fictional, but they are not.
This is why I found it profoundly disturbing, even as I was in awe of its quality.

This release was developed by TuttiFruitti Interactive a studio new to the HOPA scene and for me, Darkarta: A Broken Heart’s Quest is more polished than most recent releases from veteran studios. The game has everything that marks a great HOPA and it is certainly refreshing to have someone bringing a new perspective into an increasingly stale genre.
Once every full moon, Darkarta the immortal master of the dark arts rises from his slumber to claim an innocent soul in order to successfully cast his spell of immortality. This year, it is Sophia’s bad luck as she gets taken away by Darkarta right in front of her mother’s eyes. Playing the role of her mother Mary you must travel to the Netherworld, a parallel world full of wonder and danger that you did not know existed and bring your daughter back from Darkarta’s grasps.
I went into Darkarta: A Broken Heart’s Quest with moderate expectations. While Darkarta does not have a great track record to back up like most releases from major HOPA developers, it is not everyday that you see such a high-profile HOPA release from a brand-new developer. Darkarta: A Broken Heart’s Quest starts off like a typical HOPA game; another evil God who rises from the dead, another kidnapped child, another dark fantasy world. To my pleasant surprises, the game picks up its pace and gets more interesting with just a few minutes in and this epic HOPA more than exceeded my expectations. The backstory is rich with fascinating details and the characters all have very distinct personality, which will intrigue players as well as evoke a lot of emotion during game play. Unlike most cookie-cutter HOPAs nowadays, Darkarta: A Broken Heart’s Quest is a breath of fresh air on multiple levels. First of all, the gameplay takes twists and turns in ways that you would not expect, making it more challenging than I had anticipated. The hidden object scenes are few and far between, but each of them is extremely well-crafted with some clever interactions and the option to switch to the Match-3 mode. As for the puzzles, they are definitely plenty and ranged from easy to difficult, all of which are reasonably creative and superbly entertaining. I thought the production value of this release was the most surprising aspect of Darkarta. To put it simply, the visuals are out-of-this-world. The quality of the graphics is through the roof, the special effects are impressive, and the contrast between gloomy and fluorescent colors are absolutely perfect for a moody fantasy game like this. Not only that, but the soundtracks are also nothing short of breathtaking. Darkarta effectively uses the soundtracks to build up and maintain suspense throughout the game. Darkarta has a length of just a little over five hours and I chose the custom setting. I can't praise this game enough for it's originality and creativity and it may possibly be one of the best games Bigfish offers for 2018. Cheers! Show less

This is one game I wished I bought as a CE instead of SE.
However, the SE has extras typically seen in CE, but the SE version includes 30% extras, but to access the rest you need the CE version.

To start, the game has an Indian (Asian) background, but the characters look Caucasian. The Indian theme is a refreshing change from European and Western countries as the backdrop.
The game is quite long and the story is developed without too many shortcuts, but without being bogged down in boring tedious details. There is a journal which further explains the narrative plot and the protagonist's thoughts in her quest.
The artwork is beautiful. Lots of special effects. Voiceovers are very good, except the little girl Sophia, done by the mother's voice actress in not-believable baby girl voice.
Puzzles are mostly easy, but there are lots. HOPs have good variety.
Extras include a comic book summarizing the main chapter, but it stops where the bonus chapter begins, but still a nice extra.
Strategy Guide is included with the SE. There is a Memory room with mementos surrounding the protagonist & Sophia with handwritten notes--the details included with this game are astounding and abundant. There is also a Hall of Fame for achievements obtained in SE (and CE). Some items encountered in scenes interact for realism (lamp turns on light, mobiles chime, etc).
This game is a keeper. I recommend the CE. Show less
