It's not often that Nancy Drew has a trial demo available, which has it's benefits, but may also discourage many first timers because Nancy Drew adventures are so much different than HOG's. These games have nothing to do with Hidden Object Puzzle Games, and probably won't be a good match for those hardcore fans. If you have an open mind however, and are looking for an adventure game that doesn't hold your hand throughout the game, makes you think about your every move, and challenges you to think outside the box, you just might become a Nancy Drew fan too! Some Nancy Drew adventures are better than others, but I haven't played one that has disappointed me yet. They are not impossible games to figure out but they are different than a HO game, and navigation is probably the hardest feature to get used to, some will dig it, some will not. We Nancy Drew fans are hooked however, and we purchase them sight unseen, no trial necessary, and we look forward to the next one with great anticipation!
This Nancy Drew adventure takes us to Greece, when the curator of the museum hires your sleuthing skills to investigate the mysterious disappearances of several ancient artifacts. Could the production being held in the amphitheater have anything to do with this? There are two modes of difficulty, Amateur Sleuth which has regular puzzles, hints available and a detailed task list, and Master Sleuth which has more difficult puzzles, no hints available and a very basic tasklist. The biggest difference between the two modes are with the task list, there are several tasks to complete, more are added as you progress, and you are able to check the tasks off one by one when complete, and in Amateur mode you can click on most of the tasks to get a more in depth nudge in the right direction. Not detailed hints, it's more like putting an idea in your head as to how to find the answers you are seeking.
Your phone is used to make calls, as well as take pictures of clues, you will need to read directions, talk to the different characters you meet (several predetermined questions are available) and listen carefully. Everything means something so you will need to pay attention to the people you talk to and use your notes and task lists to guide you throughout the adventure.
I know it's hard to get "into" Nancy Drew games at first because you're used to picking up inventory items in every scene and playing the same old puzzles, as well as using a map to transport everywhere. Once you get used to navigating Nancy, you'll find yourself totally immersed in the adventure. This Large File game isn't going to knock off everybody's socks, but if you have to dip your toes in the water, this is one of the few ND games that has a demo available, and this is a fantastic series to get you used to large file games, enjoy! I am a Nancy Drew fan and this game is in my ND top 4 (with The Deadly Device, Shadow at the Water's Edge and The Silent Spy). It's a large file game and it is a long one. Some stand out points for me: the story is really cohesive, with real plot twists that genuinely surprised me. It's got a solid cast of characters, it's a small group but everyone is fleshed out with back stories and multiple motives. The variety of puzzles is pretty out there, the quality is high and feel of being a 'detective on the case', rather than going through the motions is pretty good.
I always play Amateur Sleuth for the task list and hints plus I always use a walkthrough (I don't know how anyone plays tough!) and got hours of play out of this game. Nancy's phone has 9 games installed on it, so downtime play too. The Hardy boys are more actively your long distance back up in this game, a bit more team for Detective Drew.
In typical Nancy fashion, you go to help out at a Greek museum, but when you get there, you're all alone. In the amphitheater is a theater company putting on a production for the museum. High drama ensues, while Nancy does her usual - working a couple of jobs while solving thefts, disappearances and murder. I learnt so much about Ancient Greek myth, art and architecture that I'm sure I could sit a post Drew exam. I loved the theatrical version of the Underworld in the game, it was great to explore and I loved learning about the judgement of souls. The mythology adds extra depth.
One of the puzzles requires unscrambling pictures of actual ancient Grecian art - that's the kind of attention to detail and makes me wonder how much research must be done for these games. If you haven't tried an ND for a while, now that there is a trial hour, I'd really recommend it. They've become faster, fresher and more flexible. There is a distinct lack of click, click, clicking up and down dark corridors. Wonderful if you want your brain engaged. Show less

Nancy Drew is the kind of game I like to throw myself into when I have a free, lonely weekend and feel like shaking up my old brain cells (well, not that old, really ..LOL). So, I have played 23 of the Nancy Drew investigations so far, out of the 32 that, I believe, have been released to this day. Call me a fan ? Yes, I guess I am. But that won't impair my judgement.

Truth is some of the games in that series are outstanding, others quite good, and others still somewhat less so. Yet, all of them are worth your spending time on them and challenge yourself.
Because each of them is a real challenge.
Indeed, Labyrinth of Lies, like all the others, is not easy. No Hint System to help you, nothing to guide you through everything you need to do to complete the investigation. You can only rely on your intelligence, your wits, your patience and, above all, LOGIC, as these four attributes, and only them, will get you to the end. (But if you're stuck, you can find a complete walkthrough on the Internet. Just Google it)
You will have to talk to other characters to get clues, read your own notes (in the Diary), put 2 and 2 together so as to understand the whole story, as if you were a real detective. There are many things to look for and understand, that means you will have to explore, explore and explore again, and closely examine anything that you think might be significant (everything, actually)
As you explore, you will come across (or given) useful objects, like, a code for an hydraulic lift, a remote control, coins, a Guide to the Greek Vases, etc...
And of course, you will be confronted with many puzzles that you have to solve in order to progress. No possibility of skipping them ! However, they usually come in series: the first one you encounter is not skippable, but you also have additional optional puzzles; if you solve them all (like 6 levels, in one of them) you will earn a trophy... if you like collecting trophies !
But make no mistake, all of these puzzles are difficult, and some are fiendlsh. Good news is that none are impossible and all of them are fully logical: "arranging tickets of the opening night", "placing labels on vases", "getting past Cerberus ( you have to block a dog)", etc.. will have you thinking, but if you stick along and decide you will beat each of them, you'll come out a winner.
In Labyrinth of Lies, you have a camera; you take shots of what you think is relevant. But be careful because you are limited to 30 shots. It's just a gimmick, but it's okay.
More good news, though: there is NOT one, not a single one, of those dumb HO Scenes that are full of these even dumber, useless items (like a rubber duck or a bottle of ketchup) that plague so many so-called "adventure" games and are just cheap fill-ups. Some of the items you need are indeed "hidden" in the sense you have to have to find them, but they are all useful and available using your logic and the clues you have gathered.
The story is solid. It unfolds slowly as you progress. It, too, is perfectly logical. Suspense is complete, although there is no matter of urgency, and in the sense that, as you start, you are not quite sure of what you need to achieve. But little by little you begin to see the end of the tunnel.
Graphics are adequate, not out of this world. Unlike 90 % of the casual games, Labyrinth of Lies is not about smoke-and-mirrors visuals, it's about using your brains. So, graphics are not important.
However, I, personally, am not too keen on Ancient Greek themes. That has been rehashed so many times, that I try to avoid that kind of setting. But, again, that's just me.
All in all, and to sum it all up:
- if you like near-realistic investigations (as much as can be made in a casual game)
- if you don't mind dedicating time to solving a "mystery" (all Nancy Drew games involve some sort of mystery)
- if you like true puzzles, and a real good challenge
- if you are don't want to play only below-average games that are based on some stupid fantasy story and dwell in the realm of total absence of logic.
Then this game IS for you
But:
- if you're a HO Scenes freak
- if you swallow any dumb story most games are made of, and indiscriminately give them 5 stars to all of them whenever you write a review
- if you want uninteresting puzzles, that are soooo easy to solve, and have been used over and over many times
- if you are not up to a real challenge (even though you might claim many dumb games are challenging)
- if you are too lazy, or your logic is not up to it, or don't have the mental capacity to tackle a truly challenging investigation based on pure logic
Then this game is clearly NOT for you.
Labyrinth of Lies is not exactly the best in the Nancy Drew Series (I preferred Phantom of Venice, among others), but it is still worth a good 4+ star rating, maybe a little more. So I'll give it 5 stars.
Try it, it's one of the few Nancy Drews that gives you a free 1 hour demo. See for yourself. But there is a LOT more to it than what you will see in the demo Show less
I recommend this game!

This is the first Nancy Drew where I have had not only a trial but Hints and solutions in the To Do list. No strategy guide needed. You can still phone someone for a hint like in the older ND games but in this one you can click on 'Need a hint' in the to Do list and if you're really stuck you can click on 'I need a solution'. This isn't available straight away though, you are given plenty of time to try and work it out yourself first.
I love the camera and the fact that the items you collect are at the bottom of the screen instead of having to open them up separately like in some of the other ND games. The To Do list and notes are conveniently placed at the bottom of the screen. If you want to get through conversations quicker you can click through the dialogue at your speed. Also, having the camera means you can take photos not just of evidence but also things you need to remember....so no more scribbled notes for me! Awesome game. Will definitely play it again.

I would say it's a must buy for the puzzles alone and there are some really cool areas to explore once you really get going. Show less

REVIEW BASED ON full demo
I CURRENTLY OWN 504 computer games.
PROLOGUE
This is my first Nancy Drew game, mainly because they never have demos. Based on playing this demo, I can see I’ve been missing out! There’s absolutely NO hand-holding. Despite that, the game is not impossible. Everything you need to solve its enigmas is just waiting for you to discover it, whether it’s a book given to you by a NPC, a pamphlet posted on a wall, or information you acquire by speaking with someone. The clues are all there…but it’s up to YOU to fire your neurons and put them all together.
ONCE UPON A TIME ★★★★★
As Nancy Drew, you’re hired to provide assistance with a highly anticipated museum display featuring ancient Greek artifacts, in combination with a reenactment of the myth of Persephone. Naturally, there’s a mystery afoot: some of the artifacts have disappeared, but it’s not known whether there were mistakes during delivery, or if they’ve been stolen. There are a number of suspects, including the troupe of actors rehearsing nearby, and the numerous museum employees who have either quit or been fired. Can the intrepid Nancy Drew solve yet another mystery?
PLAY THE GAME ★★★★★
Given that we’re actually expected to solve a mystery, the demo is hardly sufficient to provide an idea of what the entire game is like. At first, there’s lots of clue-gathering…items that are added to our inventory to be used later. And there’s quite a bit of interacting with NPCs to acquire information regarding what’s going on. Some might find this tedious, but adventure gamers will be familiar with the protocol.
Of the puzzles I encountered, all were enjoyable and extremely challenging. However, they are NOT instruction-inclusive puzzles in the HOPA mode; the clues you’ll need to solve them won’t be found anywhere near the puzzles themselves…you’ll have to assemble all the clues first. Awesome.
• Match the gods’ and goddesses’ symbols with the animals that generally represent them. (You’ll see this puzzle long before you have the info to solve it, which will come from two sources.)
• Given a series of statements, solve the logic puzzle to assign seating for the upcoming play. (You won’t encounter this puzzle until you find the computer’s password.)
In general, think completely outside the box. When all else fails, talk to the NPCs around you, call whoever’s on your phone, and look everywhere for clues. Oh, and you’ll want to actually read every bit of info you acquire, because all of it contains clues.
SIGHTSEEING ★★★★★
• Scenery - Beautifully rendered panoramas and architecture do a great job illustrating the blend of ancient myth and modern society. There’s lovely contrast between the rough, millenia-old stone of the amphitheater and the crisply hewn marble of the museum.
• Up close - Lots of thoughtful detail from wood textures to reflective glass on the phone to fabric folds.
• NPCs - Animated really well, including lip synching, and emoting in both facial expression and bodily gestures.
• Cutscene Animation - Smooth with a high frame rate.
• Zoom Scene Animation - Realistic from turning pages to opening doors.
SOUNDBOARD ★★★★★
• Music - What I heard of the music, I liked. It seems to be mostly in the background.
• Environmental Sounds - Excellent, from glass breaking to drawers opening to paper rifling.
• Game Sounds - Appropriate, not intrusive.
• Voiceovers - Really professional, including accents and affect.
TOOLBOX ★★★★★
• Inventory Panel - Stays open. A small eye superimposed on an item indicates that it provides information.
• Map - I didn’t see one, but there may be one.
• Journal - To the right of the inventory is an area with both “notes” and a “task list.” Click the tabs to switch between them.
• Helper - You’re on your own!
• Gimmick - You do have a cellphone, but it’s integral to the game since you use it to contact people for info, take photos, etc.
BUGS & BOTHERS
No technical difficulties, lags, or annoyances with Mac OS 10.11.6.
EPILOGUE - Overall Rating: (25 total ★) ÷ 5 = ★★★★★
It doesn’t happen often, but I’m going with five stars on this one. Excellent, intuitive, and challenging gameplay. Terrific storyline. Gorgeous graphics and lovely music. Superb voiceovers and characterization. This is how it’s done. Looks like I have a very long and enjoyable game series to explore. Happy gaming, fishies!

I know the gameplay has been described. Nancy goes to Greece to help out at a museum and falls into another dangerous mystery. You as Nancy Drew have to solve it, but like all Nancy Drew games, that is going to be a challenge. It has great writing, lots of fun and funny lines, a terrific plot, compelling mystery, great actors, wide variety of puzzles, and, of course, it has Nancy Drew. (Added bonus: Frank and Joe Hardy.)
If you've never played a ND game, this is a good one to start with. (Not the best one to start with, though. That would probably be Message in a Haunted Mansion. I think that is the easiest ND to date.) But if you've never played Nancy Drew, don't hesitate to get an online walkthrough. Chances are you'll need it. These aren't easy games. You have to really pay attention to every detail and explore every trail, some of which are easy to miss. At the end of the game, I had trouble finding the dock that led away from Persephone's throne room. (So keep an eye out for that when you get to that section of the game.) Also, there is one point in the game when Nancy has to get out of the way of a rolling ball of lava. Once that is over, be sure to explore that path. I didn't at first, and missed an important item. So remember that.
It would be best to play as Amateur if you aren't familiar with ND games. Use the checklist and notes, being sure to consult those frequently, and take your own notes. You also need to remember where you found information so you can go back there when you need that information for a puzzle. Note taking can help you record clues or recall where certain information was. Early on in a game you may not accomplish much. You'll mostly want to familiarize yourself with every inch of each location -- looking for hands or magnifying glasses. You also want to meet as many characters as you can. This can take quite a while. It did with this game.
These games also require a lot of reading and learning. They are geared for young adults, and they are meant to be educational. Even though they're geared toward young adults, they appeal to many different age groups.
I have played all ND games to this point, and this is one of my favorites. It was a difficult game, yet it was still one of their easier ones. I needed help with at least three of the puzzles, but that's pretty good for me in a ND game. That's why I say it was one of their easier games. Still, Nancy Drew games are frustrating, and sometimes I don't think the developers play fair... forcing players to resort to a walkthrough or just a walkout altogether. These games do take work, lots of thinking, note taking, quick reaction times, and complex clue deciphering. Because they are so challenging, when you finally accomplish tasks and advance, you pat yourself so hard on the back you could break an arm.
This one was a great mystery. I found myself really wanting to know how this story would end. Like most ND games, there is a lot of frustration -- but there is also a lot of triumph along the way. For me, getting to the end of a ND game gives me more satisfaction than any other game I play. I really have to work and think with ND. I could play most HO adventure games in my sleep. They don't really require that much thinking from me. (Though they did when I first started playing them.) They are especially easy since they allow you to skip puzzles that are really difficult. They also have hints. ND doesn't offer the kinds of hints that will walk you through the game. They also don't allow you to skip puzzles, and in some cases, especially when they are timed puzzles, that can mean the end of the game if you just don't have the reaction time necessary. And it is really frustrating to get all the way to the end of a game (Shadow at the Water's Edge) and hit a timed puzzle that stops you dead in your tracks! I never would have finished that game if my son had not loaned me his reaction times and beaten the puzzle for me.
If you've never played a ND, don't give up if you get frustrated. Get a walkthrough online and follow it step by step, or watch the hilarious arglefumph walkthroughs' online. Get a few of these games, along with their online walkthroughs. Use the walkthrough each step of the way on those games. This will give you a general sense of how Nancy Drew games work. After a while, the games will get more intuitive. But they do take getting use to. I used to need walkthroughs for the whole game. Now I only consult them when I get really stuck. I think I had to consult a walkthrough 4 or 5 times on this game. Other than that, it was mostly me. That's a pretty good feeling to know that I'm getting better at logic and detailed thinking. (They're definitely IQ boosters, and they will tease your brain like few other games will.) I do seem to get better with each game. And if I can, you can too.
Maybe someday I'll be able to play an entire ND game without any outside help.
I hope you'll give this game and Nancy Drew a try. Show less

I read the reviews on this game and almost didn't get it. But I am so glad i did because it is one of the BEST Nancy Drew games I've played yet. (Which is quite a lot) It's important to keep in mind that this is NOT A HIDDEN OBJECTS GAME! Which is what I think most people hope for and then they're disappointed. No, Nancy Drew games are challenging mystery games that take intellect, patience, and thinking to solve (like a real mystery). It sucked me in like all Nancy Drew games do and I loved every second of it. Lol so if you're a fan of the series, this one is a thumbs up! Show less

Love all the games by Her Interactive Nancy Drew. Walk Thoughs are sometimes needed but easy to get. If you loved Nancy Drew books as a kid you'll love the chance to be her as an adult.

Now this is a game that gets your brain working. You have to give this game a try, as it's not at all like a HO game, that is why it is under the adventure category. They don't give alot of hints, but you do have to read alot, make notes, follow the story, books you read, and follow the conversations for your clues to where to go next or how to solve a puzzle. They don't give alot of hints, but you do have to read alot, make notes, follow the story, books you read, and follow the conversations for your clues to where to go next or how to solve a puzzle. This isn't for everyone, but if you want a change from the easy peasy HO games, I highly recommend all the ND games. I have played everyone, and love them all. They are each very different. This is Nancy Drew 31, and the last that BF has offered, and am very dissapointed that they haven't come out with Nancy Drew 32 yet. They are so good, though, that I will enjoy playing them over and over again. Show less
