I liked this game a lot. I would probably give it a 4 but I'm giving it a 5 to make up for all the undeserved low ratings. It's not as good as Light Advent, Princess of Ice or a Ravenhearst game and granted the storyline has been done before, but it's still a pretty darn good game!. I like that it's a bit creepy but everything isn't broken down, ugly, infested with bugs etc. Everything looks normal sometime even pretty which I like. If I'm going to immerse myself in a game I don't want to be in a nasty ugly negative space!.
The game's graphics are pretty good with a lot of blues, pinks and purples. The music adds to the creepiness and the voice overs are in sync with the lips.
Since you are fighting the shadows of a strange origin, you are going to have to use the well known principle - light casts out darkness. So, you are using a special lantern to fight the shadows.
The hidden object scenes come in all different kinds. Quite a lot of searches to do. Then there are mini games that you play every once in a while (even to get the lantern itself). The puzzles vary in their difficulty level, but they are mostly easy, which I like because I play to relax not give myself a migraine. All and all I enjoyed my time playing this game and It's a game I would play again. I highly recommend this game.

After the last game in the Dark Dimensions series I had told myself that I was through with this series but then a new one comes my way and I at least had to give it a try. It does look like the series has been somewhat revamped with a new look and a new storyline. You haven’t seen your friend Ashley in quite a long time and now she needs your help. Ashely has done well for herself and is now a radio personality but with fame comes the threat of unwanted attention and Ashley fears she is being stalked. What can a friend do but rush off to help and that is exactly what has you entrenched in a new dark dimension.
The game offers four modes of gameplay: Casual, Advanced, Hard, and Custom If you select the Custom mode you can set your hint and puzzle skips to recharge anywhere from 1 to 100 seconds. You can also turn of the search click penalty and fiddle with other settings so you can play the way you like.
The graphics are updated and fairly sleek with the feel of computer generated graphics. The color palette still uses quite a bit of mauve and blue but overall they are not too bad. The voiceovers are good and the lip-syncing is much better than in some recent games.
Your tools include yet another gimmick, this time a lantern that is used to get rid of the dark shadows, and yes you do have to play a mini-game to get the thing working. You also have a journal that keeps track of game information. You will find the interactive transporter type map during the first HOP in the game.
The HOPs include a variety of styles and they are interactive with the objects being clear and well defined which made them easier to spot. The puzzles are not difficult but they are fun and some require a bit of thought but nothing too taxing. I particularly liked the first puzzle that is a sort of slider type where we combine pieces to make a complete item.
I have to admit that by the time the demo ended I was looking forward to purchasing the full game. Of course there was a sort of cliff-hanger finish so I knew I had to find out more. The gameplay was more fun than I expected so I guess I am not too jaded and can still enjoy the entertainment value of HOPA games. Yes I know, all of them are very similar and seem to follow a set pattern of find this and do that, then solve a puzzle for a bit of a break but I still love the genre and can generally find something I love in each new game that comes along. The plus for me with Dark Dimensions Shadow Pirouette is that it is much better than I thought it would be and that was a nice surprise. Even though I am a hopeless HOPA game fanatic and can always find something I like, as always, I recommend that you at least try the demo to see if this is a game you will enjoy. Show less

Very lengthy with no need for morphing and/or collectibles to needless fill up gamers' precious time. Packed with fun and entertainment, many well-drawn, colorful detailed scenes. Gamers will move quickly as the hidden objects, puzzles and mini-games are well blended throughout the game. Grrr, wish I had purchased the Collector's Edition.

Your good friend Ashley McNamara, needs your help in the quaint town of Everton. Something dark and paranormal has been stalking her, the police say it's not unusual for a radio station celebrity, and her physician thinks she's just a nervous person. Both of those theories are dead wrong, by the time you arrive, the "Shadows" have taken over the entire town. These Dark Dimensions are capable of taking on any form, they can even possess living entities!
Dark Dimensions has always been one of my favorite series, mostly because of the genre and certainly because of the superior computer generated graphics DD is known to have. Until now. Why have the devs abandoned the crisp, well defined graphics that made this series great, for the inferior graphics presented in Shadow Pirouette? The overabundance of pink and purple hues, make this game seem more like a fairytale than a game that's supposed to be "dark". I was waiting for a poof of glitter and a magical unicorn to show up, so I could be whisked away to another pastel colored dimension! Dark Dimensions usually center their focus around the paranormal, somewhere between the living and those who have passed on but still have lot's of attitude. With this game however, we get a Magic Lantern that's powered by a magic crystal, to make matters worse, the lantern looks like a star studded Christmas ornament, I just can't take it seriously.
The magical crystal powered lantern is used to ward off the Shadows, each time you use the lantern you will play a quick mini game of untangling the ropes, that get slightly more complicated each time, as more ropes are added and the pattern becomes a little tighter. The Collector's Edition has the addition of collectible figurine silhouettes in groups of three, for 10 separate scenes. Once you collect a set of three silhouettes, you can watch a very short clip of a movie that eventually tells you the story about the evil entities. The Collector's Edition also has 16 Achievements to earn as well.
The Hidden Object Scenes are mostly Interactive Listed Items, most of the scenes have some type of puzzle to solve such as arranging bottles on shelves to create an image. There are also silhouetted shape finds in multiples such as a mug x 2, or a ballerina x 2.
Below are brief descriptions of some of the Mini Games and Puzzles you will solve:
1) Use directional arrows to move the center jigsaw puzzle piece towards the other puzzle pieces to interlock.
2) Adjust the power grid switches to connect wires to fuses.
3) Find missing musical instruments and place them correctly within the scene.
4) Use rotational arrow buttons to rotate stained glass pieces to match the image shown.
The Collector's Edition has 6 Wallpapers, 12 Concept Art pictures, 19 Developer's Diary photos, 16 Achievements, Figurine Silhouettes, 12 Mini Games, 12 Hidden Object Puzzles, 8 Bonus Puzzles, 6 Soundtracks, a built in Strategy Guide and a Bonus Chapter, enjoy! Show less

This review is based on two, free trial hours, one for the CE and one for this SE. I played on a MacBook Pro with operating system 10.9.5.
Confession: if I were a fan of “fantasy-“ games more I’d like this Shadow Pirouette a lot more. "Wait. What? You say you're not a fan of fantasy games but you love Key to Ravenhearst?" Yes, but that’s not fantasy in the same way…I think you know what I mean. Ravenhearst isn't about real people, but it’s about people. Shadow Pirouette is about, well, shadows that come to life. Different.
Games are driven either by a story line filled in and elaborated upon with great HOS and puzzles, or, they’re driven by the HOS and mini-games and have only a weak story line as an excuse to present a series of games and HOS.
Dark Dimensions, Shadow Pirouette is definitely a game fueled by the story line. It’s my strong preference. The story is about a town overrun by shadows...shadows that seem to possess personalities with each having a will or a “mind of its own.” Unfortunately, this is not a story line I enjoy. You, however, may well. I can't penalize a game just because I don't like the subject matter. That's my issue, not the game's.
FUN FACTOR
This is a fun game. PERIOD. If I liked fantasy games, this one would be a blast….So, if you like fantasy games, consider this a recommendation! See the "Challenge" sections below. They explain why the game is fun.
VISUAL/SOUND QUALITY
What you see: There is a hierarchy of developers. Some put out games where the animation and artwork is so lifelike I have to think for a bit about whether a game is employing real actors or is just supremely well-drawn. It never crossed my mind that these are possibly live actors.
In addition, non-human objects have a cartoonish look to them. The colors are vibrant but when I say the figures are cartoonish I mean they are very simply drawn...lacking any of the patina of real life.
What you hear: the soundtrack is entertaining but it doesn’t have much to do with the story. The few characters we meet are scared of what's taking place in their city. There is no sense of “scary” or “frightened” in the music.
ONE VERY FAVORABLE NOTE: The lip-synching is very well done.
LEVEL OF CHALLENGE
HOS: There is a very strong effort to make the HOS challenging. Objects interact with each other…not always logically, but they are a bit complex at least.
GAMES
I remember playing two games particularly one is a difficult example of a familiar game. The other is new…at least to me.
The first requires moving 5 stars connected by "virtual lines" into the right anchor position so the lines do not cross. I am a spatially “challenged” person. Bearing this in mind, this game still took an inordinately long time to complete. The game appears simple but isn't. It may not be as hard as I made it, but it still presents a challenge.
The second game is brand new to me and quite challenging. AND, it’s a lot of fun. The object is to complete a square within a square, composed of marbles. You begin with a middle section that can move within strict limits that can’t be crossed. As the game progresses the player grows the smaller center section by attaching to additional sections as it moves around within the larger square. Believe me, this game is a lot more fun to play than to explain!! I think even more important than the game itself is the fact that Dark Magic Productions has actually come up with something new. We often see a new spin on an old game...here is a NEW GAME.
Storyline: See above.
Overall I think this game is perfect for a person who enjoys the fantastical storyline. While some of the design elements leave room for improvement the game overall is enjoyable, challenging and contains some new material. That’s worth a rating point all on its own!! Show less
I recommend this game!

First the story: nothing enticing there: you just keep chasing evil shadows in order to save your friend. Eliminate them with a lantern ! Haven't we already seen that somewhere else ? And of course it all starts with a bus crash.
The demo only lets you play the first chapter. Yes, I always play the trial version first, before deciding whether I think a game is worth buying or not. And this one isn't. Not for me, anyway. What I saw in that demo didn't convince me to place that game on my bucket list. Perhaps the other chapters are better, who knows ?
I appreciated the fact that there are not many HO scenes. Unfortunately they are boring and unchallenging in spite of being interactive. Easy too, although some of the things you have do are somewhat baffling like the HO Scene in the food truck: press a lemon to get its juice into a glass, then pour the juice over a hot lid in order to retrieve a hot dog with tongs, pour mustard over the sausage, and keep it in your inventory to give it later to a dog (giving mustard to a dog ? Uuuh ?). Question: why not use the tongs to lift the lid up, hey ? By the way you have to put sleeping tablets in the hot dog too !
Tasks are the just the ordinary routine. We have performed them in dozens of other games: keys, screwdrivers, fuses, flashlight, hairpin, shears, trowel....At one point you have to open the door of an ambulance in a very unusual way. I'll have to remember that trick if I lose my car keys ! LOL. However I liked the last task and the cutscene that concludes Chapter 1. Good fun !
Minigames/puzzles are not puzzling at all. They are basic and unchallenging, like the rest. The "unentangle" puzzle is irritating. Not only does it reappear often, but there seems to be a glitch: the stars won't let go and keep sticking to your cursor even after you have completed the puzzle. I had to hit Skip in order to exit and progress through the "adventure".
Fortunately you have a Custom option which allows you to decrease the Hint and Skip charging time down to 5 seconds or less.
Other than that I found the graphics quite pleasant, simple, clear, crisp and not eye-straining. They're not too dark either, but you can adjust the brightness in the Custom option if you wish.
Saying the game is awful may be a bit harsh, but it doesn't meet my standards of what I consider a good game. It might be adequate in the eyes of novice or over-enthusiastic players, but BFG has a lots of games you can choose from, that are much more exciting and challenging .
As always, I suggest you play the trial version, you might like it, after all. Show less
I don't recommend this game.
