Aunt Anna has another family crisis to fix when the past and the present collide head first in the Gray family castle. Brandon's young son Billy is being tormented by a man of many faces, and his wife, Elena has fallen mysteriously into a coma. Sometimes this man appears as Alfred the Butler, sometimes as a bald man with scars, sometimes as Brandon himself, but clearly the man behind the dark cloak is the most frightening entity to Billy, tormenting him every night in his dreams. This man is pure evil, and he'll stop at nothing to destroy Brandon and Elena's only child. Aunt Anna is the only person capable of stopping this madman, her ability to revisit past events is the only means of finding out who, or what is after Billy, and more importantly, why?
If you are new to this series, I strongly recommend that you go back to the beginning (The Bride, I believe is the first in the series but I may be wrong) because this ongoing storyline is awesome, HOWEVER, it isn't a necessity, you will be able to understand this game's story even if you haven't played other games in the series. You won't have any magical amulets to slow down time, you won't enter any magical mirror portals, and you won't have any furry sidekicks, but Aunt Anna Gray does have the ability to use personal objects to travel back in time, where time stands still and people are frozen in that moment of time. With this unique ability, Anna can investigate in that time frame and solve cases that otherwise would be unsolvable. I liked the way her abilities were tied into the story to give us an explanation of the origin of why she is the only one in the family with unusual powers. The graphics are always exceptional, but I thought that the quality of the last game was much better then The Heir. Each Scene is packed full of areas of interest, and there are several Plus Sign inventory items requiring a little something extra before the item can be used. In the Collector's Edition, there are hidden Puzzle pieces to collect that will form 3 different Screensavers when assembled, and each Scene has a slow changing Morphing Object, and some of the scenes have Collectible Character Figures.
The Hidden Object Scenes are different every time, some of which are smaller zoom zone scenes where you find multiple fragments or objects. There are Listed items, Silhouetted Shape finds, Multiples of an item, Pairs of items to find, multi-layered finds, and descriptive finds available in just the demo alone.
The Mini Games are decent, not too hard, not too easy. Below are brief descriptions of the games you'll encounter during the demo:
1) Rotate each of the three valves to move the gauges into the blue zone.
2) Lead the zebra through the labyrinth using directional arrows to open and close the gears along the path.
3) Move lockpicks into the lock selecting individual rods to lift up or down as well as directional arrows to move the lockpicks.
4) Assemble a puzzle picture by swapping square tiles.
5) Move the portraits along the lines to their correct places, or choose two portraits to swap positions.
6) Enter the correct safe combination following the combination found.
The Collector's Edition has 8 Wallpapers, 8 Concept Art pictures, a Secret Room to test your skills, 5 Music Soundtracks, 13 Collectible Character Figures, 3 Screensavers to assemble with the collectible Puzzle Pieces) an Archives Room, a Morphing Object in every scene, 19 Achievements, a built in Strategy Guide and a Bonus Adventure, Enjoy! This edition Grim Tales 10: The Heir surpassed all my expectations with its captivating storyline and extraordinary gameplay. The Hidden object scenes and puzzles were executed with tremendous attention to detail and design, but it was the use of inventory items and progression of the story that was most challenging for me. Like the description in the intro you're cast in the role of Aunt Gray and you've been called to the Gray's Castle to help your nephew Brandon. His son is missing, and his wife's fallen into a mysterious coma! It's up to you to discover what dark forces are at play in your family's castle. The past and present collide as you look for answers. Once you reach the end of the demo (where you try to use the tranquilizer gun on Brandon) the excitement goes full throttle and you learn a 'Family Secret' that compels you to continue playing without even a bathroom break...LOL.
One of the features of this edition I enjoyed about the game is you travel back and forth to the past, present and future. There are no hallways with doors lined up to go through. The transport map is there for each "time" but you never had to click on the map to view the present, past or future. The items you collected in whatever "time" you were in always stayed with you. Voice acting and Sound/SFX were fantastic and so are the graphics, even if a bit dark with tiny inventory items. Aunt Gray also discovers a new talent to her supernatural abilities, but to elaborate would be considered a 'REVIEW SPOILER'. I really hope these developers continue with this level of quality with their other series, this epic adventure deserves more than just 5 stars... Enjoy!

- Story: Mystery story. Your nephew asked you for help. There is something evil in the castle. His son is missed, his wife unconscious. What had happened? Is it once again, the old family curse?
- Difficulty can be customized in all relevant issues: Tutorial, sparkles, map issues, glitter, contextual pointer, plus item indicator, helping texts and hint / skip recharge.
- Graphics/locations: pretty awesome.
- Animation: excellent
- Music: accentuated, slightly applied.
- Voice-overs: very good and fitting.
- Tools: an interactive map and an ability to go back in time
- HO’s: tricky, several types: description, silhouettes, pairs, morphing objects.
You can’t switch to another type of game.
- Mini games: some were quite tricky, some very easy.
- Adventure part: Not too obvious, quite challenging. Where something is hidden is sometimes a little bit, let’s say unusual? What’s to do is mostly logical, even w/o helping texts. Except the task at the frozen fireplace. That was clearly not self-explainable.
Some tasks could be solved, because there were only few possibilities.
- Specials: one of those fine superpuzzles. Show less

My only problem is that I didn't quite get the story: what it was all about, what the intentions of the main villain were and why he chose the victim that he chose. Maybe I should have played previous games in the series to learn the story though. Anyway, I truly enjoyed the game till the end and didn't get bored by it (which, alas, happens with way too many games). It's a good one. Show less

Yes, Aunt Gray is back and she has been called upon by her nephew, Brandon, to help find his missing son. When you arrive at Gray Castle you find Bandon’s wife in a coma and Brandon has gone ahead to search for Billy. A story of a ghostly figure emerges as you use your special ability of seeing the past to search for Billy and now Brandon. Encounter an old nemesis and search out the source of a deep evil hidden within the walls of Gray Castle. You will need your wits and nerves of steel to save your beloved nephew and his family in this great new Grim Tales game.

The game offers four levels of difficulty: Casual, Advanced, Hardcore and Custom. In the Custom mode the hints and skips can be set in a range of 15 – 90 seconds. The graphics are excellent as are the lip-synced voiceovers. The entire sound package adds to your enjoyment of searching through a spooky castle to find Brandon and Billy. There are seven chapters plus the bonus chapter and even with a very long demo we only complete chapter three. Given the amount of time it took to go through the demo, I believe the game is going to be quite long. However, I tend to gawk at everything in a game and even some of those games that seem short for others still take me a long time to complete. I hate to skip mini-games and if they present a challenge I can work at them for quite a while before moving forward.
Your tools include an interactive map that is present at the beginning of the game and a bit later you will receive an hour-glass that can be used to see the future. So not only can you use your ability to see the past, you now have a tool to see the future.
It looks like the Mammoth team has finally moved away from the traditional list style of HOPS. The game demo included a mix of hidden object styles that included matching objects, finding different colors and types of flowers, and one where we find objects by their silhouette. The silhouette style of HOS is my least favorite so I am happy to find that not all of them are that style. Another change is that I finally don’t have to open a suitcase to start the first HOS in a game. There are a lot more mini-games than there are HOP scenes, so if you are a fan of the mini-games you have hit the jackpot. While almost all of the mini-games are familiar, many of them seem to have a stepped-up difficulty level so that we do not have a game padded with super easy mini-games. The following mini-games are only a few of those that were found in the demo: rotate valves to set gauge levels, lead a zebra through a labyrinth press the buttons on a car toy in the correct order according to a clue, swap pieces to complete a picture, and many more.

This latest offering in the Gray family saga is quite a bit better than some of the more recent games in the series. Fortunately, The Heir seems to take a step back into being more like the older Grim Tales games. The story is interesting and who doesn’t like searching through a dark old castle filled with cobwebs and all sorts of creepy things. In the end, this game took me a couple of days to complete since it is packed with things to do and rooms to explore. I felt that this latest game in the Grim Tales series is what games once were - excellent and truly worth playing. Even though I love the game, please try the demo and see if it is one you will enjoy.

OUTSTANDING eerie atmosphere, enhanced by outstanding effects, music and environmental sounds, and the type of graphics I love. Secret passages and cubby holes to be discovered and you never know what’s lurking or has been locked away for decades. Fogs and webs, smokes and dust. The mansion is made to look sinister and foreboding without making you want to run away, because of the contrast impressive fixtures and fittings!
You feel glad (well I always do), that they don’t cross the line and turn it into a menacing R. You don’t witness any cruelty or terrible suffering of anyone living. Although, anything bad they do want to convey, they do in ultra-cartoonish fashion, so that it isn’t intensely disturbing. There’s only one scene I had to look away from and that was when blood was pouring from two containers (which the sound effects made worse).
A couple of times, just when you think the game is ending, there’s more! Once or twice there are in fact little, unexpected occurrences, that make the game humorous just for a few seconds, but I can’t give it away.
GRAPHICS: Mix of real and generated. Absolutely GORGEOUS GRAPHICS, my favorite kind – very realistic looking. Lots of darks, shadows then highlights.
SOUNDS: 4 . EXCELLENT in every department. A lot of thought and effort must have gone into this to have the right music and the right sounds at exactly the right times. Rarely do I keep music on for so long! Wish I'd got the CE for the music alone.
HOPS: About-20! Good looking. All kinds: silhouettes, interactive, matching pairs, even a morphing objects one!
PUZZLES: A LOT! 30-400? Regular puzzles, all kinds of levels of difficulties.
HINT: Guides and leads
DIFFICULTY LEVELS: 4 options
MAP: Travel with indicators
INVENTORY: Lockable
JOURNAL: NONE
CHARACTERS: You are mainly on your own, but you need to help your Nephew Brandon, his wife and son. You meet some deceased relatives too. Great voice-overs and lip-sync.

This game was different in that Anna can now travel to the future as well as the past. It was exciting because it was so utterly confusing you had no idea what was going to happen from one frame to the next.
My only beef with the game is that it had no diary that I could find. With a family as complicated as this one, it helps to have something to keep tabs on who is who and what's going on.
Otherwise, it was a beautiful, interesting game the likes of which we've come to expect from this extraordinary series. Show less
