I rarely listen to the music but I always start the game with its music. This music was integral to the story (blending well with sound effects) and added to the overall pace of the game. Rarely does this happen so again, bravo!
I play a very relaxed game (custom mode) taking my time to look around each scene. Gorgeous, to me. As always, try the demo. Show less

The music is appropriate but plays a little too often. I wish there had been more atmospheric/environmental sounds (that could be controlled on a separate slider from game pick up sounds).
The description on the main page of this CE says it has screensavers but it doesn't; only wallpapers. I would have bought this as a CE version if it had had one. I know I would buy so many more Eipix CE's if at least one was offered in the bonus content. So I'll wait for the SE on this one.
If you haven't already tried the demo to the game~
Dance Macabre: Curse of the Banshee
You may want to give it a try. It is played in Ireland instead of Scotland but it has the same pretty look and feel of this game.

REVIEW BASED UPON THE ENTIRE GAME:
5 Chapters Plus a Bonus Chapter – Strategy Guide: 37 Pages
OPINION: Laddies and Lassies! You will be ‘roamin’ in the ‘gloamin’ as you, a young student, head off to the Scottish countryside. This is my favorite series from EIPIX, and I found this game a vast improvement from the previous ones. The story is a clever patchwork of myths, weaving the ones surrounding “Nessie,” the Loch Ness monster with those of King Arthur and his “enchanting” sister, Morgan Le Fay. Play a young student under the tutelage of Master Colin, a tutor who believes in “hands on” education. The pace is excellent with a wide array of interactive activities.
The graphics are colorful and portray a bucolic image of a bygone era of Scotland. To add to the pastoral imagery is a flute which sits at the side of inventory bar. This gimmicky flute is used to summon animals when their help is needed. It lights up and provides a picture puzzle to be solved. I hate gimmicks in games; however, the eleven (11) puzzles which accompany the use of the flute are creatively designed. Each puzzle has puzzle pieces which must be maneuvered by using the four (4) keys of the flute, creating an image of the animal involved. Each puzzle is unique and non-repetitive.
There is only one collectible, owls. Most are easy to locate. There are morphing objects within most of the HOP scenes, some which I found a little difficult to locate. There are no morphing objects within the scenes of the game. Upon completion of the game, return to the scenes in search of souvenirs, which are wooden animal statues. Many of the souvenirs are cleverly hidden within the scenes requiring an intensive search by opening doors, cabinets, and other items to locate many of them. At the end of the game there are puzzles and HOP scenes which can be replayed along with the Skipping Stones game provided with the HOP scenes.
There are eighteen (18) HOP scenes, with some of those being mini-HOP scenes. Most of the scenes are lists of items, silhouette, or matching pairs. They are standard fare seen in most games. There is one FROG scene and one storybook scene in the demo. Most of the scenes are set in junk piles. They are decent; however, I found none very interactive or exceptional in design. The Skipping Stones game can be played in lieu of the scenes.
There are twenty-seven (27) puzzles within the game. There are twenty-six (26) which can be replayed. The puzzles are ones seen in most games. They include a maze puzzle, a unique matching puzzle using a myriad of clock hands, and several rotating rings and moving tiles puzzles. There is one logic puzzle which I enjoyed in the demo which requires matching potions with ingredients according to given clues. Most of the puzzles are of middle difficulty. I found none which were extremely easy nor terribly difficult.
MECHANICS:
• Four (4) levels of play including a customized version.
• Thirteen (13) achievements – some with 3 parts
• Collect thirty-eight (38) signs (owls)
• Collect twelve (12) morphing objects within the HOP scenes
• Collect thirty (30) souvenirs (wooden animals)
• Gimmicky flute to summon animals (Play a puzzle when used)
• Eight (8) wallpapers along with concept art, music and video sequences
• Replay twenty-six (26) puzzles and twelve (12) HOP scenes
• Skipping Stones game available at the end of the game.
BONUS CHAPTER: It is a prequel. Join Vanessa (Nessie) from the main game in her quest to locate the Stone of Gormire. It is a long chapter and I found the story and graphics equal in quality to the main game. To me, it is well-worth the price of a collector’s edition designation. There are five (5) puzzles and four (4) HOP scenes in this chapter. Continue to collect the collectibles within this chapter.
SPOILERS: HERE ARE SOME OF THE PUZZLES AFTER DEMO:
A. Mathematical puzzle. Move numbered pegs between four columns so that the sum of the numbers on each of the 4 columns equals the given number for each column.
B. Matching puzzle. Move a series of clock hands on a circle so that each pair of hands point to the same symbol.
C. *Flute puzzle. Assembly/Switch puzzle. Using the 4 notes of a flute, switch pieces of an image of a beaver until the image is restored. (There are 11 of this type of assembly puzzle within the game)
D. Maze puzzle. Pull a key through a maze to an opening at the other end
E. Rotating rings puzzle. Using arrows, rotate 5 rings to match colored orbs with their outside frame.
BONUS CHAPTER:
F. Logic puzzle. On a 6 x 6 grid light all tokens. Clicking on a token will light all the other tokens surrounding it and vice versa.
G. *Flute puzzle. Using 4 notes on the flute, rotate pieces to restore the image of a squirrel.
H. Moving bars puzzle. Move bars to create a path for a token to move from left to an opening at the right of the screen.

Good game. Story line similar to others.
I liked the bonus round better than the regular game. The bonus part was worth the extra Collector's fee. Only thing was the collectable owls on one screen I found but didn't show at the end and when I went back in the bonus part after the games were done I still could not get it to work even with the hint button. Weird but not to big of a deal to me.

A little dark in places but I assume this is to make it harder to play. Couple times it had things to find that I never heard of the word so had to keep hitting items to see what they were.
Only reason I didn't give it a five is it dragged a bit but maybe I'm getting tried of this type of game.
Graphics were good but the excellent part of the game was the voice actors they were very good.
Recommend this game while on sale unless you really like this series.

I agree with the positive reviews of my fellow Fishies. The only thing I did not like was the lack of ability to see immediately on return to a scene if I had found the morphs [which I did finally found the notes almost at the end of the game]
This one is getting a **** 4 out of a possible ***** 5 on my personal enjoy-ability scale : )

fromLoch Ness is 750 feet deep & holds more water than all the lakes & rivers of England & Wales combined. The 1st time Nessie was mentioned was in 565 AD by a Christian monk. The search continues, they tried training dolphins but they didn't acclimate well ❄

Maybe it's just me, but these stories lately are cray-cray, they are nothing but a hodge-podge of goobaly-gok nonsense, I'm fairly certain the developers are asking all their writers to jot down a storyline, and then they throw them all into a hat and draw 5 or 6 different storylines. When they can't agree on the best subject, someone gets the bright idea to incorporate all of them into one game The end result is Under the Surface, a game about Loch Ness Monsters, Wizards whoo-whoo are wise way beyond their years, magic gems, sorcery, curses, and Dr. Doolittle paranormal gadgets. Oh, I almost left out the best part, this is all a science experiment at school!
What is up with the GADGETS lately? I've said it before, I'll say it again, most HOPA players won't specifically search for a game that has a gadget, but they will specifically pass on a game that has a gadget, so why add an unnecessary Gadget that automatically wipes out 50% or more of your targeted audience? The Gadget in this game is a Pan Flute that allows you to communicate with an entire zoo, a Turtle, Mouse, Horse, Deer, Beaver, Nessie Birds, Wolf, Squirrel, and Fox (9 times in the Main game and 2 times in the CE BC) Each time the Pan Flute is used, you play the same variation game, clicking on the 4 flute reeds to adjust image sections that will recreate that particular animal's image. This gadget requires a huge leap of faith, stretching one's imagination to the outer limits...How does a musical instrument adjust the pictured drawing, do the musical notes convert into drawing notes? Where does this picture come from, is it displayed on a wall or a notebook? Is it a hologram? Does it come with a tablet? How does tweaking a black & white sketch of an animal translate into that animal's language? I don't speak to the flute, the drawing or the animal at any point in time, so just what is the Pan Flutes purpose? Is the Pan Flute psychic too?
I must be playing a different game version every week because my number stats for HOP's, Mini-games, collectibles, morphs, and gadget counts always seem to be far different than another reviewer's stats?? There are 9 Hidden Object Scenes and 5 smaller Zoom Zone HOP's (+4 CE BC) They are varied with Listed Item Finds, Keywords in Sentence Finds, Silhouetted Shape Finds, Matching Pairs Finds, and a couple of unique scenes I enjoyed, where you had to find Paint Splotches that matched black silhouette shapes on a Palette, and several Keys in a display case where only the end shape of the key was shown as clues. In this Collector's Edition version, each of the main HOP's has a Morphing Object to find. Missed morphs can be picked up by replaying the Hidden Object Scenes in the CE extra section, however, there are 13 Hidden Object Scenes in the main game and Bonus Chapter with 13 Morphs, but only 12 re-playable HOP's. There is an alternate Skipping Stones Chain Type Match 3 game available, and after completing the Bonus Chapter, you can play a continuous replay version.
There are 22 Mini-Games (+5 CE BC) which includes a repetitive Pan Flute puzzle where you adjust image sections by playing the flute, to form animals. Below are brief descriptions of some of my personal favorites:
1➺Untangle Ropes by moving Knots.დ
2➺Move lock sections to their color-coded slots by rotating the center disk to pick up and drop off sections. დდ
3➺Arrange stacks so the sum equals the number shown under each column. დდ
4➺Drag multiple clock hands so that each pair of hands point to matching symbols. დდდ
5➺Rotate groups of gems to connect all ray of light points. დდდ
6➺Rotate and swap Gear sections to complete 4 different gears. დდდ
7➺Match the spheres with the shape by pressing arrows to rotate disks. დ
In the CE Bonus Chapter, you play as Venessa who has been sent Morgan on her quest to find the Stone of Gormire that caused all the commotion in the main game's storyline. This is an average length Bonus Chapter that takes place over 8 scenes, although it is a longer chapter than any of the chapters in the main game, it isn't a "lengthy" chapter by any means?? There are 4 Hidden Object Scenes and 5 Mini-Games, 2 of which are Pan Flute "talk-to-the-animals" games. (where does this flute come from, why does it keep showing up, how does it translate human to animal talk?) You will continue the Hidden Owl collection with 8 remaining, and there are 4 Hidden Object Morphs remaining as well.
This Collector's Edition version has 8 Wallpapers, 8 Concept Art Pictures, 10 Music Soundtracks, 12 Movie Video Cutscenes, 13 Achievements, 12 Replayable Hidden Object Scenes, 26 Replayable Mini-Games, Replayable Skipping Stone Games, 30 Souvenirs (return to each location scene to find the souvenir) 13 HOP Morphs, 38 Collectible Owls (can anyone explain why they chose an owl?) 5 Main Chapters +Bonus Chapter, and a Built-in Strategy Guide.

I’m not going to waste a lot of time writing a long review of this latest Myths of the World game, Under the Surface, because there is not too much to say aside from my review title which should give you a good idea of how I feel. A couple of years ago EIPIX made a change to their HOP scenes, most likely because too many gamers complained about them being too easy. Rather than being creative with hiding the items they instead made them tiny and indistinct so that they became almost invisible. I believe this developer should have taken into account that many HOPA gamers are older and may lack the visual acuity they once had. At least for me, the HOPS were tedious and painful to play in Under the Surface.
Although the game itself is very good I am deducting two points from my game rating because the HOPS are so disappointing. In fact, I ended up playing the alternate Skipping Stones game rather than dealing with the tedious HOPS. The graphics in Under the Surface are very good, and the voiceovers are some of the best I’ve heard in recent HOPA games.
For me the story of the Loch Ness Monster was a big selling point for the game. I have generally enjoyed the Myths of the World series with one of the games being on my list of all-time favorites. Even though I did dislike the HOPS in this game, the Puzzles were fun. Of course, as is common practice now there are more Puzzles than HOPS, which in this case that is a good thing. If you can deal with the tedious HOPS, then I highly recommend this game as one you might enjoy. As always, please try the demo to see if Myths of the World Under the Surface is the game for you. Happy gaming! Show less

I liked the Scottish countryside but the color and details should be better. It would have been better if they interacted with Kelpie more. I didn't like some of the matching in the hops. The other hops were nice. I liked having animals help but I didn't like the puzzle that went with the pan flute. It has too many puzzles.
The bonus chapter has Vanessa (Nessie) looking for the Stone of Gormire which is a prequel. I thought the coloring of the scenes was better in the bonus chapter.
Liked the extras-12 video, 12 hops, 26 mini-games, 10 music and 30 souvenirs. The 8 wallpapers would be better without the game stamp. Eight concept art. Skipping stones are like a match 3.

Excellent graphics and sound. Another in the long list of recent cutesy games for kids. Hey you too can talk to the animals. I'm not sure what happened at BF, but the trend seems to be all whimsy fairy tale games for children.
If I were 12 I would recommend this game.
