Okay, the storyline is a bit cheesy, okay, a lot cheesy...monsters that are just arms and cheap Halloween chattering teeth, easily banished with a grain of salt? That's not going to fly with most of us true horror fans, but hey, it's better than most plots nowadays. The story isn't what's important here folks, what's important is that this game is developed by an Indie developer with amazing insight and a heart the size of the Acorn Institution where the game takes place! While the big guys are throwing us breadcrumbs, GrandMa is throwing us whole loaves of bread. I have been rather harsh on my reviews for this developer in the past, but Dreadful Beauty has shown me that they care about their games and obviously have their claws sharpened to dig in for the long haul. There's still room for improvement (especially with the mini-games) but I say "let's support these guys, they obviously care!"
What am I talking about? You know how some games give you Conversation Choices or Action Options but they are so vague that it doesn't really matter which one you choose because the result is going to be the same either way? In this game, the choices and actions you make actually DO change the outcome which makes this game an excellent value because you can replay it several times with slightly different outcomes (bwahaha...I fell in a hole!) Throw in the fact that you get to fill in the blanks of the story during the Bonus Chapter AND then brush up on your sleuthing skills in a Hidden Chapter, well that's solid entertainment folks. Morphing Objects that are somewhat challenging, Collectible Figurines and extremely well-hidden Herbs in every scene is just added butter on your GrandMa's homemade loaf of bread!
Hidden Object Scenes: There are 15 Hidden Object Scenes +4 in the CE Bonus Chapter, and several smaller Zoom Zone HOPs as well. Granny did a fantastic job as far as creativity goes, adding multi-scenes and panning features. My only complaint is that towards the end of the game, they got a bit lazy and began repeating the same scenes. There are Interactive List Finds, Silhouetted Shape Finds, Multiples of the Same Item Finds, Find & Replace, and several scenes that simply require interactions to open, find, and place items, well done GMa!
Mini-Games: There are 16 Mini-Games +5 in the CE Bonus Chapter. Most of the games can be played in an Easy or Hard Mode, however, the only real challenge any of the games presented was the fact that they included so many "clicking one affects others" puzzles. I must admit that I became rather bored with the puzzles because they were far too easily solved. Below are a few of the game you'll encounter during the game:
☠-Separate colored tiles by dragging a wire from beginning to end x3.
☠-Play a game of checkers with Mr. Bones.
☠-Place all stoppers to direct the gas to the far-right container.
☠-Click on various icons of limited amounts from beginning to end, all icons must be used.
Bonus Chapter: Brace yourself for an action-packed prequel playing as Dr. Harry Jules on that Dreadful day when Annabelle met her horrible fate during WWII when the hospital was bombed. This is an average-length chapter that takes place over 6 scene locations with 5 additional Mini-Games and 4 Hidden Object Scenes. You will pick up the remaining 6 Morphing Objects, 4 Character Figurines, and 6 Herbs (actually 12, each scene has an herb & a copy) You must locate all Herbs to unlock the Hidden Chapter, but you can click on the missed Herbs & Figurines in the CE extra's section by clicking on the ones you missed)
Hidden Chapter: After completing the Bonus Chapter and locating all copies of Herbs you can access the Hidden Chapter titled Redemption. You will search 6 scenes to locate evidence, speak with witnesses and gather statements to identify Dr, Lewis Horton's killer. Did I mention this game has an excellent replay value lol?
Collector's Edition Extra's: 10 Wallpapers (all with Characters ὃ) 10 Concept Art Pictures, 17 Movie Cutscene Videos, 8 Music Soundtracks ♪, 12 Replayable Mini-Games♙, 17 Replayable Hidden Object Scenes, 15 Achievements, 20 Character Figurines, 20 Morphing Objects, 40 Herbs (2 copies of the same herb in each scene) 6 Main Chapters (Affliction) +Bonus Chapter (Reminiscence) +Hidden Chapter (Redemption-you must find all Herbs to unlock) and a Built-In Strategy Guide.

Whispered Secrets Dreadful Beauty seems to be a change from the previous games that we’ve seen from this developer. This is a dark and excellent game that drew me in right from the beginning. For me the game seemed a bit more difficult and not quite as easy as some of the more recent games we’ve seen. I loved that the solutions were not always obvious and that I sometimes had a difficult time figuring out where to go, or what to do next.
The mechanics in the game will often present a choice between various actions in order to solve a problem. The result of whichever action we select will somehow change the game, but until I replay it, I am not certain that anything actually changed the end result. It is a fun idea at least and one that guarantees I will definitely play the game more than once.
The HOPS were entertaining and it was difficult to not hit that hint button when I got stuck. Yep, I did have to resort to using it once or twice in the game, so I won’t earn the achievement for getting through the HOPS without using the dreaded hint button. The puzzles were also very good and I didn’t find any that resulted in a huge brain drain headache to solve.
The CE version of the game does offer a lot of extras. I enjoyed spotting the morphing objects and then the herbs that were hidden in all of the scenes. Sometimes the morphing objects jumped right out at me but sometimes I missed them when I first looked at a scene. Something I appreciate in the game is that there is a pop-out slider that will let you know how many herbs are to be found in each scene. Since I am fairly driven to find all of the collectibles in CE games, I always appreciate knowing how many there are to find.
Whispered Secrets Dreadful Beauty is a challenging and terrific game that held my attention as I played. I enjoyed the storyline and it took a bit of time to figure out who really was the “bad guy” in the game. I always enjoy a game that keeps me guessing! Even though I purchased the game, I recommend that you try the demo to see if this Whispered Secrets game is one that you will enjoy. Happy gaming! Show less

There are games that are too linear - simply plod, scene to scene, challenge to challenge, until you get through. This definitely isn't one of those! Here you have a few crossroads to contemplate, choices to make that definitely affect the solution path, but which is correct? I'd recommend taking notes on which choices the player makes, because we might just be back that way on a replay. This alone gives the game unusual value.
Pros: Excellent plot, slow reveals that we have to earn. Some challenging puzzles, adequate to very good voice acting, and a couple of memorable ancillary characters. And, of course, the options - one of these leads only to having to solve the puzzle over again in reverse, others to major shifts in game strategy, and the player doesn't know the consequences until after the commit button is pressed.
Cons: Plot is just convoluted enough to make play over several sessions challenging - here the journal is invaluable. I'm not sure anyone playing the SE can completely get the plot since some of it is not completely explained until the Bonus Game.
Bonus Game: Superb. It is actually a prequel but one that makes the dilemmas of the main game's characters make sense at last. A couple of nice puzzles, and adds enough play to make the CE a good purchase.
Overall, a rather innovative game with a high replay value. I'd love to see more of this approach. Show less

Very intense, very creepy, fast paced game right from the beginning. Lots to do, tons of collectibles, it doesn't let you take a breath... This is not a fantasy, it could be a real story during the period between the two world wars and that's the best part of it. Judging by the demo, I would say this is the best game of the year. Not for kids!

* Voiceovers (with dialogue);
* Interactive map;
* Diary;
* 14 Achievements;
* Find 20 morphs, 20 figurines and 52 herbs;
* Replayable HOPs and mini-games to better your time and accuracy.
The graphics are excellent. Colours are vivid and bright and items you need are clear to see and use. Sound is good and the music is fast orchestral with plenty of drama.
The HOPs are mainly highly interactive straightforward, silhouette, finding one item to use to find another and matching patterns to items. Some HOPs even have morphs in them which I liked. I loved doing these and thought some of them had a good challenge to them.
The mini-games are really fun to do. Some of these are quite challenging. My favourite was the checkers game and I lost quite a few times before I finally managed to beat it. There are a lot of mini-games to play and I'm sure you will find your favourite ones in there.
There are 20 morphs, 20 figurines and 52 herbs to find throughout the main game. The figurines are easy to spot, but the morphs and herbs had more challenge. The morphs are not in every scene - just check at the bottom of your screen to check whether there is a morph in that scene or not. There are two herbs in each scene to find. Find them all and you get achievements for these.
All up the game and bonuses took me about 6 hours - not skipping or using the hint in the HOPs or mini-games, so good value for money.
This is a game I will play again because I made a wrong choice in the game and Sophia's son became a victim instead of being rescued - oops.
Definitely comes recommended. I am now a loyal fan of Grandma Games and I'm now going to buy the rest of the Whispered Secrets series. Well done devs. Show less

The game is a mystery and horror game both. But this game has color and it's not that dirty. Some places are beautiful and very detailed. There is a box by a man projector and I kept playing with it. You have choices to make and it effects the out come of the story. It's fun. It would have made a nice Halloween game.
The hops are pretty and some are used more than once. I only liked the easiest puzzles like the jigsaw and skipped the rest. It has 6 chapters + bonus chapter + solve a mystery.
I Loved the collectibles. You collect 20 figures from the passed games in the series. You have 20 morphs and 52 healing herbs. The place where you have the herbs only has 26 herb plants with information of what they are used for.
You can replay 18 hops, 11 mini-games, 8 music and 21 movies. Achievements in the form of medical equipment. Ten wallpapers and ten concept art. The game has a journal.
The bonus chapter is a prequel. The bonus little mystery after the bonus chapter was a bit confusing to me but I got it.
The main game has a funnel tube that you converse with a character and I found this quite fun and original. So I liked the story, choices, hops and gameplay. But the gameplay in the bonus chapter had me using the map a lot. Show less
