This game is really fun! This collectors addition has the morphing objects and collectibles to search for. The characters interact with you and the voiceovers are done very well. The challenge level is easy to moderate. I would recommend for players of all skill levels. The story line is easy to follow and is a paranormal take on the old fable.
This game is very solid. Compared to other story games, this one checks all the boxes and is worthy of five stars. I highly recommend, but try the demo first to be sure you enjoy it, too. Show less

Witches are so misunderstood! Did anyone else get super-excited when they saw that today's HOPA was from Friendly Fox? No disrespect to the other two developers, but they just don't put forth the effort that Friendly Fox does nowadays. I just knew I would be glued to the computer chair and actually playing this game versus being on auto-pilot, which always seems to be the case with the games by the Big D & usually the Big E!

The gameplay tends to be on the easy-breezy side, but at no point did I become bored. The graphics are amazing, the Collectibles & Morphs were fun to look for, and the characters were very likeable, but most of all, the story was really good and had several plot twists throughout. I often wonder if I've just grown weary of HOPAs, but then a game like this comes along and reassures me that I have just grown weary of the cookie-cutter HOPAs. Bridge To Another World: A Trail of Breadcrumbs has reignited my HOPA spark...

COLLECTIBLES/MORPHING OBJECTS: (CE version only)
Friendly Fox never disappoints when it comes to Collectibles & Morphing Objects; I highly recommend that you don't wait for the SE version if you are like me and love Morphing Objects and well-blended Collectibles! There is a pull-out tab that keeps track of the morphs & collectibles.

There are two Collectible Cards per scene that allow you to play a Bonus Card Game when the collection is complete. Some of the cards are quite challenging to spot because they are blended into the scenery very well.

I love the Morphing Crystals! They morph at a perfect rate and are the perfect size. If I'm being completely honest, the morphs would be more challenging if they didn't all morph into red crystals because once they changed to a red crystal, it made them more obvious. If the morphs just changed from one random object to another, it would make them more challenging.

GADGET/HELPER:
Gretel has a Magic Amulet that helps her get out of sticky situations. The Amulet is used 7 times in the Main game via a mini-game that varies each time. I actually enjoyed the Amulet Mini-Games and didn't find the Amulet to be cheesy or annoying.

HIDDEN OBJECT SCENES:
The Hidden Object Scenes are far & few between, with just 14 HOS in the main game. Fortunately for HOS lovers, the Bonus Chapter has more HO's than Mini-Games (8 HOS-3 Mini-Games). I found the HO scenes to be pretty good, and there was a good variety of styles, such as Interactive List Finds, Find & Replace Items, Finding Multiples of Items, Silhouetted Shape Finds, Matching Pairs, Keywords in sentence Finds, Swatches, Combination Finds (_ + _ =?) and scenes where you had to open several drawers to find & replace listed items which would reward you with keys to open the final drawer. One of my favorites was placing stencils on the correct objects in the scene.

MINI-GAMES:
Hope you like puzzles because there are a whopping 41 Mini-Games in the Main Chapters and 3 additional Mini-Games in the CE Bonus Chapter. Some of the games can be played in a Casual or Hard Mode, but most of the puzzles can be solved on the first shot. There are several Tile-swapping puzzles, or puzzles where you swap items according to their background shapes (such as labels) or to match a pictured clue, selecting objects in a specific order, and several Target type games where you have to align targets using sliders for horizontal, vertical, and diagonal positions (none of which are moving targets) The ones I enjoyed the most were a bit more intricate or lengthy, such as a Navigational Map using arrows and following directions on notes you come across while finding & using objects to progress. There was one unique game where you had to tangle ropes versus untangling by crossing ropes a specified number of times. My absolute favorite game required you to align identical pictures on 3 different columns on a disk (small inner section, medium mid-section, and large outer section) by pushing sections in two slots that held two puzzle sections and rotating the disk.

BONUS CHAPTER: (CE version only)
I'm not going to go into detail about the Bonus Chapter because it ties into something that happens at the end of the main game. As I said earlier, there are several plot twists, AND you get to choose your own ending! The Bonus Chapter spans 7 scene locations with an additional 3 mini-games and 8 Hidden Object Scenes. You will search for the final 14 Collectible Cards and 14 Morphing Crystals which unlocks a Bonus Card Game.

COLLECTOR'S EDITION EXTRAS:
7 Wallpapers, 15 Concept Art Pictures, 6 Screensavers, 6 Music Soundtracks, 30 Movie Video Cutscenes, 26 Achievements (11 of which are available in 3 categories) 19 Replayable Hidden Object Scenes, 12 Replayable Mini-Games, 2 Collectible Cards per scene that unlocks a Card Game, 2 Morphing Crystals in each scene, 4 Main Chapters +Bonus Chapter, and a Built-In Strategy Guide.
There's always something interesting going on at my new forum! If you miss chatting with fellow fishies from the Big Fish Forum days, lace up your hiking boots, grab some marshmallows (Woodsy the bear loves 'em), and follow the path to thewoodsforum.boards.net Show less

The HOs and puzzles are nicely mixed and (most of time) easy to moderate. The morph objects and search items are usually easy to find, especially since the number is always displayed.
The game has a very good length.
I thoroughly enjoyed the game and am already looking forward to the next game in the series.

Would prefer if the graphics were a tad less dark. Could use with some brightness. The narration is clear and engaging. All steps actually made sense which I have found doesn't always happen either. Common sense is a key factor which is a good thing. Show less

The locations were dark so I had trouble locating the collectibles and morphs. I finally stopped looking just to save time. Too many helpful sparkles made the adventure feel more like a stroll through the park.
I was making good progress until the demo cut me off at 40 minutes and I couldn't get back in. In my short trial I was tending to tasks that actually made sense and didn't involve a ton of broken locks and the usual silly things. My amulet and crow friend will prove to be important along the way and my dog companion will maybe be useful as well.
The storyline is interesting with the witches and hunters including Hansel. I'm curious about a grown up story of Hansel and Gretel. The characters so far look and sound great. Graphics are beautiful but rather dark, locations are dreary due to destruction and abandonment, dark color. I found them interesting and sad.
I had only a couple of games and 2 brief HOPs in the demo. They were easy and enjoyable, different from the norm so that was a definite plus for me. Not much challenge but it's something that's unavoidable in today's games, no matter the dev or subject matter. This story interests me and hopefully the BC is a SEQUEL.
There are lots of collectibles, morphs, achievements and a secret challenge game that may be worthwhile. So this will be the first CE I have purchased in a very long time and I usually am very happy with Friendly Fox. I'm rating 5 stars in spite of the short demo because it's Hansel and Gretel, along with some wishful thinking. Show less

REVIEW BASED UPON THE ENTIRE GAME
4 Chapters Plus a Bonus Chapter – Strategy Guide: 40 pages
There is no place like home! No clicking one’s ruby red slippers here, but an amulet which transports Gretel back home. Join Gretel as she returns home after years of residing upon another world. Her memories may be gone of her former life, but her amulet contains a raven which will help jar her memory as she treks through this game. This is an incredibly beautiful game and one which can be played by the entire family. It is a fairy tale come-to-life. However, there are some minor discrepancies within the storyline and was hoping the game would explain why Hansel thought Gretel was his sister, when obviously this is not the case. Nevertheless, kudos to Friendly Fox for another gorgeous, incredibly well-crafted game.
The game has everything a player would look for in a fairy tale game. There are plenty of activities set against a rather unique story. There are some surprises which await Gretel as she learns about her past. The collectibles are red morphing crystals and tarot cards. If you collect all the collectibles, you can play a card game against one of the witches. I felt the morphing crystals a little hard to locate, but, to me, that is a good thing! However, the collectibles were not so tiny that you could not see them as with some other developers’ games.
MECHANICS:
• Four (4) levels of play including a customized version.
• achievements.
• Collect 50 jigsaw pieces (tarot cards) and 50 red morphing crystals. If the player collects all, they can play a card game.
• 7 Wallpapers along with 6 screensavers, concept art, music, and video sequences
• Replay 19 HOP scenes and 12 Mini-Games
• Magical amulet to use to battle evildoers
BONUS CHAPTER:
It is a prequel and explains how Greta was zapped into another world as a child. The chapter is lengthy; however, I feel it lagged somewhat and believe this may be to the numerous HOP scenes. I counted only three (3) mini-games and seven (7) HOP scenes. That is hardly an even mix! I am not an aficionada of HOP scenes, preferring to play puzzles instead. After one HOP scene after another, I became somewhat bored. Nevertheless, it is a good addition to the game and if someone likes playing successive HOP scenes, they will probably love this chapter.
HOP SCENES AND MINI-GAMES: From what I have counted there are fifty (50) mini-games and twenty-two (22) HOP scenes with numerous mini-HOP scenes with a small number of items to be located. There is an amulet provided which is used to fight off foes. A puzzle appears when there is some enemy to battle. Friendly Fox did include some puzzles which can be played in either a casual or hard version. None of the mini-games are challenging and the casual versions of the puzzles are easy. Most of the mini-games are variations of may of those seen in the past.
Some of the HOP scenes are cleverly designed. I always love the ones in which the player must open drawers or boxes to find items which are used to open other drawers and boxes. There is one of these within this game. There are the usual standard lists of items which are very interactive and creatively designed. There are matching scenes, silhouette scenes. There is a silhouette scene in which cut-outs are placed on the items to be removed. I always enjoy those as well.
MY VERDICT: This is almost the “perfect” HOP game. Unlike many other times, I agree this game should be give the “Editor’s Choice” designation. For me, the time passed quickly playing this game. It is a long game, and for the money, it is well worth every penny!
SPOILERS: HERE ARE SOME OF THE MINI-GAMES AFTER THE DEMO:
A. Casual/Hard. Assembly puzzle. Place shards into an amulet in the proper locations. In the hard version the player must rotate the shards.
B. Tracing puzzle. Create an image on a grid which matches a given diagram
C. Casual/Hard. Assembly puzzle. Place pieces of a map into position. The casual version has 3 pieces in place upon starting, in the hard version, the player must start from scratch Pieces stay in place if correctly placed.
D. Jigsaw puzzle. Place pieces into position to create a shield to protect you from an evildoer. 3X
E. Connection puzzle. Restore a net by moving a rope through the missing segments. You can only go through each knot in the rope once.
F. Climb every mountain! Strategy puzzle. Choose the correct spot among several spots to climb up a hill avoiding weak spots and creepy Texas-style scorpions.
G. Come Fly With Me! (Man, I need to stop listening to Michael Buble while playing) Fly away with me on my broom. Control a broom by using arrows to help you dodge obstacles on your way to save the world in which you are living!
H. Connection puzzle. Connect stones with lines so they all connect with each other and the lines do not cross each other. 3X
BONUS CHAPTER:
I. Strategy puzzle. Place runes into a grid based upon numbers at the top for each column and side of the grid for each row. 3X
J. Strategy puzzle. Catch the Baddies. On a grid with pentagon shaped squares, entrap a boy and his father by landing on those squares putting up barriers until the are entrapped.
