Hello friends! Finally, a new addition to this wonderful series. As always, I review mostly on the game play and not so much on the story. Even though the faces seem a bit cartoony, the graphics are excellent, very clear. Animation is well done. Color was very nice throughout. Game play was excellent, no problems during the demo. Voices were quite well done, being age and character appropriate, with emotion, fear, urgency. There was no annoying or monotonous music. Sound FX are very well done when outside a building, with bird and wind background sounds.
HOGs are a combination of interactive lists, find and use items and silhouettes. Scenes are fairly clear and and items are not difficult to find. You could not switch to something else. I found the puzzles to be challenging and taking a bit more time and thought to complete than expected. Hint system is very helpful and transports to longer locations by way of a jump map. The map is well done, and shows you where collectibles and morph items can be found in case you miss one, as well as which area to search next. Areas are clearly identified by name and picture.
We have a lot of collectibles...the more the better for me. Most of them are very small, making it a challenge to find them. I chose to not have the cursor give me a hint when looking for collectibles. This really makes finding them a challenge. A couple of times, I have to look at the Strategy Guide to see exactly where they are located in the scene, because I could not find them. We need to find 30 morphing items, which morph quickly and are very easy to miss. We also need to find 10 manuscript pages, which are easy to spot. Then we have varied collectibles - horseshoes 7; shoes/boots 8; hourglasses 8; turtles 7 and wheat stalks 12. Some are quite small, but most are not that difficult to find.
This is one of my favorite series. The story flows very well, even though I'm not yet sure what the story line is. The opening scene was quite well done, but did not give you any hint of what or why. Still, it drew me in from the very beginning. We don't seem to have quite as much character interaction in this addition, but hopefully that progresses as we move through the game. You are constantly on the move, and do a lot of backtracking for one item. This game is challenging and fun. I feel that all levels of players will find this one well worth playing. Yes, I am going to add this to my ever growing collection.
I do not give 5 stars easily, a game must be exceptional in all aspects for that. However, this one comes very close. I gave it a 4.75 only because I felt we needed more character interaction.
As always, try it for yourself and see what you think. We all have different tastes in games and you may not care for this one at all. Play on! Show less

REVIEW BASED UPON THE ENTIRE GAME
6 Chapters Plus 2 Bonus Chapters – Strategy Guide: 90 pages
Susan the Warmaiden returns, leading us adventure lovers on another fantastic trek through the mythical, magical Lost Lands. As a grandmother with a winsome granddaughter, Kiana, Susan feels her days of adventure are over. She has retired from her adventure seeking days in the Lost Lands – or has she? When her son, Jim returns from an excavation in Kherson, he needs her help in opening a chest with the insignia of the Lost Lands. Unbeknown to Susan, the chest is cursed, and when she opens it, her son picks up an hourglass and immediately turns into a sand statue. Now, she must return to the Lost Lands and with the help of a former colleague, a magician named Maaron, find a way to lift the curse and restore her son to his human form and restore peace to the Lost Lands. Lifting this curse will result in hours of gameplay, searching the wasteland, forests, and caves of the Lost Lands to discover the history of this curse and the method to stop it.
What an amazing game! To me, this is one of the best HOPA games out this year and worthy of an excellence in gaming award. There are so few adventure games of this quality developed any longer. A great deal of creative effort went into producing this game. Five-BN does not produce many games; however, the ones they produce are gaming masterpieces. The graphics reflect the magic of the Lost Lands. The characters have a life-like appearance. This is a long game and to me, more of an adventure game than a HOPA game. There are HOP scenes throughout, but the quality and difficulty of some of the puzzles within the game are more indicative of what one would find in an adventure game. There is no hand holding in this game. The player will need to write down lock combinations and puzzle information as it will not be given on a sheet of paper within the inventory to be used when needed. There are a wide variety of collectibles, (ninety-two - 92) and most scenes have two within them. Most scenes have a morphing object and/or a manuscript with information needed to play the game. I found some difficult to locate.
I love this game for the most part; however, there are two minor elements I dislike. I dislike the location of the strategy guide. The player must return to the menu to access it. I feel the player should be able to access the strategy guide directly from the game screen as it is with most games. I wonder why Five-BN has the guide located within the menu when it would be as easy to place it next to the inventory bar? I also experienced a modicum of discontent with the story’s theme. I do believe this developer is trying to appeal to the grandmothers out there by having Susan’s granddaughter, Kiana, as her assistant in the game. Personally, I did not like this aspect of the game; however, I can appreciate those who would find this “adorable” – a true “Grandma and me” moment. Personally, I do not want my adventure games to be “adorable” or have “cutesy” elements within them. Nevertheless, neither of these made the game any less enjoyable for me.
MECHANICS:
• Four (4) levels of play including a customized version.
• 22 achievements.
• Collect 8 hourglasses, 7 horseshoes, 7 turtles, 8 shoes, 12 spikelets (wheat stalks), 10 books, and 30 morphing objects
• Collect 10 manuscripts.
• 10 wallpapers along with concept art, music, and video sequences
• Replay 8 Puzzles and 22 mini-games
BONUS CHAPTER: Toddler Time! Remember this golden rule - a troll is not a troll if he has friends to play with. What? I thought this was a game for adults – not toddlers. Kiana, Susan’s granddaughter is the protagonist within this chapter. She has a nightmare about river creatures grabbing her (a watery hand from the river) and taking her away. The chapter is short and has the feel it was just thrown into the mix. Having a child tromping around by herself within the dangerous kingdom of the Lost Lands seems surreal, bizarre, and unsettling. I especially thought the developer lost the essence of the game by having the small tyke, Kiana, as the protagonist in this chapter. It had the feeling of “Sesame Street visits the Lost Lands.” I expected Big Bird to tackle the troll with hugs and kisses. It is juvenile and seems more designed for elementary school children. However, this chapter is not designed for children. The activities are the same as in the main chapter and some of the puzzles are somewhat difficult. Most children could not solve these puzzles. So why the developer made this chapter into one which seems more designed for children is beyond me. There are ten (10) puzzles and three HOP scenes. I also thought the ending was somewhat abrupt. I believe the developer wants the player to either come to his/her own conclusion on the ending or is setting up a sequel to this game. This is the only part of the game I truly disliked; however, again, it did not offset my enjoyment of the game.
HOP SCENES AND MINI-GAMES: This game is puzzle intense and they are somewhat difficult as well. I play games for the puzzles and this game has oodles of them. I counted sixty-one (61) mini-games, and all are superb. Twenty-two (22) of the mini-games can be replayed upon completion of the game along with eight puzzles. Many are on the easier side; however, there are some challenging ones as well. Kudos to the developer for designing some new, innovative puzzles and not regurgitating the same ones from other games. Some of the puzzles are repeated within the same scene, especially toward the end of the game. Several of the puzzles are repeated three (3) or four (4) times, increasing in difficulty. However, I did enjoy replaying the repeated mini-games as they increased in difficulty.
As with most Five-BN games, there are not as many HOP scenes. However, there are more than in their previous games. I feel they are better designed as well. I counted twenty-one (21) scenes of various types. Unfortunately, there is no ability to replay any of the HOP scenes. In past games, this developer had only silhouette items which, once located, were returned, and used, within the same scene. This game has more variety in the scenes. There are silhouette scenes; however, there are also lists of items, matching, rebus clues, fragment scenes, and search and replace scenes.
SPOILERS: HERE ARE A FEW OF MY FAVORITE PUZZLES FROM THE 61 WITHIN THE GAME:
A. Tangram puzzle. Place board pieces into position to create a bridge on a scaffold. 3X
B. Switch puzzle. Slide animal tokens along paths leading them to the background of their suitable habitats.
C. Maze/Strategy puzzle. Move a gold token from one end of a maze to the other opening gates where possible and using other tokens to open them as well. Some tokens will open gates where others will not.
D. Weights and Balances puzzle. Place 8 weights on two sides of a scale (4 on each side) so they balance.
E. Strategy puzzle. Move heads for statues so each head is on top of its proper statue body. Plot a course moving rows back and forth, dropping the heads. Plot so that the heads end up on the proper body. (Repeated 4 times)
F. Rotate obelisks so they are situated as per a given prophecy.
G. Connection puzzle. Connect dots on a grid in the desert to summon the sand spirit.
FINAL PUZZLES – All are repeated through the final scenes.
H. Beam of light/mirror puzzle. Move stones with light emanating from them so all blue stones are lit.
I. Click on skulls so that all light up. Clicking on a skull will either light or turn off all those next to it.
J. Click on colored stones to move them so all are within their matching, colored slots. Stones will continue moving until they hit another stone or wall.
K. Move yellow chains so each yellow square is covered by a part of the chain.
BONUS CHAPTER:
L. Jigsaw puzzle. Place pieces into position to restore a stained-glass window.
M. Connect flowers within a grid so all pathways are connected without retracing steps. Also avoid obstacles (knives).

Chicken Coop Poop:
It's hard not to love a Five-BN story. Every series features a female protagonist as the main character. They are confident, intelligent women who refuse to be intimidated by anyone or anything standing between them and their mission, whatever that may be. They boldly face their adversaries head-on. They may bend, but they can't be broken. They are steadfast and won't stop until their goals are achieved...yet they somehow still manage to be compassionate and optimistic.

When it comes to graphics, this team seldom gets the recognition they deserve! You can have an amazing cast of characters and an incredible plot that keeps you hanging on the edge of your seat...but without creative artwork to set the scene, the story simply can't come to life.

The Lost Lands may be a fictional world, but that doesn't stop this team from creating a realistic atmosphere. We play the game but rarely stop to smell the roses (in this case, the gaseous mushrooms, lol) of the Lost Lands. No one stops to think about the tedious, minute details that have been added to every aspect of the game by the graphics department. When a developer is passionate enough to make a chicken coop this realistic, chicken poop and all...can you imagine how much effort went into the rest of the game?!! As you play this game, take the time to notice the beautiful quality of the graphics, no detail has been overlooked because, clearly, Quality & Quantity matters to Five-BN Games!

Morphing Objects/Collectibles (CE version only)
This is my favorite feature, and definitely worth opting for this Collector's Edition version! There are 30 Morphing Objects that can be quite challenging to spot because they morph slowly AND morph into a similar object that always blends with the scenery. They are small, so they will never stick out like a sore thumb as they do in games by other developers, but large enough to see without straining your eyes.

Every scene also has a Collectible from several different categories. There are 8 Hourglasses-7 Horseshoes-7 Turtles-8 Shoes-12 Spikelets (in the Bonus Chapter) and 10 Lost Lands Manuscripts. You will unlock a Bonus Puzzle for each Collection & Morph category Completed and a Bonus Mini-game when you complete the Lost Lands Manuscript collection.

You can disable the cursor from changing to a hand change when you encounter a morphing object or collectible, as well as show the scenes with missed collectibles & morphs on the map.

Hidden Object Scenes:
The HOS by this developer isn't a typical Hidden Object Scene; they are Interactive-Progressive Puzzles requiring you to find an object that matches the Silhouetted Shape shown. Then you use that object somewhere in the scene, interactively, to uncover the next object, lather-rinse-repeat. Trust me when I say you will open and close zoom zones over and over, trying to find something to help you progress. At times, you will be at a loss as to what to do next...something that never happens in a typical HOS! Keep in mind that these are puzzles that need to be solved, and the solution is always logical. They may be frustrating at times, but when you solve the HOS, you walk away with a sense of pride and accomplishment...and you deserve to feel this way in a game!

STRATEGY GUIDE:
Yes, the Strategy Guide takes a few steps to access. First, you have to click the Menu button, which pops up a window to access all the features of the game, and then select the Strategy Guide. Another reviewer complained about the location of the Strategy Guide, but I have a different take on this opinion. All games by Five-BN Games are "thinking" kinds of games. They are NOT the typical cookie-cutter games offered by the other two developers week after week. You will have to think outside the box; you will have to solve complicated (but doable) puzzles; you will have to revisit scenes you had long forgotten had open tasks. Five-BN wants you to use your brain, follow the clues, and rely on your instincts. The point is to play this game without the temptation of a single-click, easy-to-access Strategy Guide!...think about it :)
Mini-Games:
Put on your thinking caps because these puzzles aren't for the faint of heart! They aren't impossible puzzles to solve, but they will require a little bit of thought and a lot of patience. These aren't the kind of games that can be solved in one or two moves, and certainly not by luck of the draw. From the first Gate puzzle, you will know that you're in for a treat; by the time you make it to the Gem Sword puzzle, you'll rethink your puzzle skills. You'll probably want to give up on the Boat puzzle, but you won't because it feels great when you solve finally solve it! When pushing piles of leaves onto a hammock, you'll find yourself clicking the reset button multiple times, but you'll also realize how much fun you are having and be surprised that you are looking forward to the next challenge!

Bonus Chapter: (CE version only)
The Bonus Chapter features a new female protagonist...Susan's granddaughter, Kiana. She is not a toddler, and this is definitely not an easy-breezy chapter! There are 3 incredible Hidden Object Scenes and 12 maddening Mini-Games across 12 additional locations. There are no Morphing Objects remaining in this chapter, but you will search for the final 12 Collectible Spikeletts, which unlocks the final Bonus Puzzle.

Collector's Edition Extras:
10 amazing Wallpapers, 14 Concept Art Pictures, 8 Music Soundtracks, 16 Video Cutscenes, 22 Achievements, 22 Replayable Mini-Games, (+8 Bonus Puzzles) 30 Morphing Objects, Collectibles: 8 Hourglasses-7 Horseshoes-7 Turtles-8 Shoes-12 Spikelets (in the Bonus Chapter) 10 Lost Lands Manuscripts. You will unlock a Bonus Puzzle for each Collection & Morph category Completed and a Bonus Mini-game when you complete the Lost Lands Manuscript collection. 6 very long and intense Chapters +Bonus Chapter, and a Built-In Strategy Guide.

The characters and the dialog between them, along with the great animation had me following the story in anticipation of the next part of this adventure. I didn't have to read everything to get what was going on. I was actually engaged in the story. Characters were so much more realistic through the whole game, in looks and actions as well. I kinda felt like I was right there.
The only thing was I didn't care for, was the type of puzzles, but that's just me...I didn't feel like I was missing anything by skipping them.
I also liked the fact that the Bonus game was an extension of the main one, the adventure continued..
Looking forward to the next one in this series as the ending was left way up in the air...I want to know what happens next!! Show less

The Lost Lands The Four Horseman has been my favorite BFG of all time for years. This one is pretty close to it. A much older Susan the War Maiden heads back to the Lost Lands to save her son who has been infected by a LL cursed object that found its way to Earth. Another generation of her family enters the Lost Lands as her granddaughter follows her through the portal. The adventure begins.

I love everything about these Lost Lands games:
1) the complexity of the multi-world setup that makes you have to work your brain to remember where items would be needed
2) having to travel through the dolmans (after you set them up) to get to different nations of the Lost Lands but also having the option to click where you want to go on the map
3) that the game uses a common sense approach so that you don't just pick up every random item and lug it around forever but you go back and get useful tools that you've seen laying around when you need them.
4) that the story is interconnected with elements of the previous episodes but can still stand alone
5) logic, logic, logic - the stories are intriguing and they make sense. No blaring plot holes. No stupidly hidden keys inside a wall for no reason, no well and bucket, no bees to smoke
6) Relevance - this game absolutely won for me when Susan needed information and actually kept going back to a LIBRARY to look up relevant information using the Lost Lands' version of the Dewey decimal system, lol.
7) the puzzles, mini-games, and hidden object scenes are perfection. They're challenging but not frustrating. Hard enough to make you think, but not enough to make you skip.
8) the artwork is fantastic!
9) the sound track is fantastic!
I could go on singing this game's praises.
This is an excellent addition to an excellent series. Keep it up, Big Fish! Bravo! Show less
I recommend this game!

I have a couple of things to say about this game and the developers. I'm not sure how many of you gamers know that this is a Ukrainian developer. I completely understood that they had more important things to do recently and I would not see them producing a game for quite some time. I have a couple of things to say about this game and the developers. I'm not sure how many of you gamers know that this is a Ukrainian developer. I completely understood that they had more important things to do recently and I would not see them producing a game for quite some time. They are my very favourite games and I left Big Fish Games, as this developer is the only brilliant one left in the wilderness. What has happened to Big Fish!!!! I have been keeping an eye what has been coming out, when to my delight I saw a new Lost Lands. I joined up again, just to have access to this game. I know it's a big ask, under the present circumstances, but I would be so happy if you could produce more....Please and Thank you so much. Show less
