Evan and Melissa were deeply in love, their wedding was perfect, their lives together were perfect, until the day she disappeared without a trace! Evan searched for her day and night to no avail, and began to give up hope until a letter arrived about a year later. Inside the letter was a card with the same symbol that was on the back of Melissa's hand. The card was an invite to play a game, with a promise of making his chances rise in his never ending search for her, if only a fraction. Willing and desperate to find Melissa, he drives to the abandoned town of Waldburg to join 6 other players with desperate motives of their own, in a deadly card game. This is no ordinary card game, this is an interactive card game against.....a BEAST!
This ain't your momma's game! There's never been a game quite like this one, and I could hardly wait for this game to be released. The graphics are fantastic, and the features are even better. Zoom zones can be flipped, and interactive windows pop up in sections as you progress. This game is all about the Cards of a Deck, you will collect different ones that do different things as you try to slay the Beast, AND you only have till dawn to do so, because the game ends everyday at dawn and you'll have to start all over again the next day, if you survive that is! There's the Banisher card that can scare off the beast, the Runebreaker, the Lurker and even a Shaman card that allows you to speak to the dead. Each time you use a card you will play a Mini Game where you click a moving ball to guide it into several openings of a moving labyrinth, but if your timing is off you'll have to start all over. The Collector's Edition version has Achievements to earn as well as a Hidden Beast Claw Sign in each scene, but you get so involved in the "game" that none of the extra's really matter.
The Hidden Object Scenes vary with different types such as Interactive Listed items, finding Keywords in a sentence, finding Misplaced items and returning them correctly, and my favorite was finding Multiples of each symbol shown on the wings of a wooden eagle statue. There is a Morph in the HOP's, (CE) the only feature that disappoints me because like most, I prefer them in the main game.
The Mini Games are really entertaining, some easy, some not so easy. Below are brief descriptions of some of the games you'll encounter during the demo:
1) Move the hands so that their color matches the color of each corner.
2) select buttons in the correct order.
3) Assemble the picture by swapping tiles.
4) Turn on the four lights at the top, selecting gears to rotate them so that the batteries are connected to the lights.
5) Light up oval stones by selecting right and left rotation arrows to rotate the discs.
6) Land on the correct runes based on the clue. Select right and left arrows to choose which way the dial moves and the number buttons to select the number of moves.
7) Select and swap picture pieces, pieces can only be swapped with the piece next to it.
The Collector's Edition has: 29 Hidden Symbols, 10 Music Soundtracks, a Card Gallery, a Collectible Hunt Game, Jigsaw Puzzle, 20 Wallpapers, 19 replayable Hidden Object Scenes, 19 Morphing Objects within the HOP's, a built in Strategy Guide and a Bonus Chapter, enjoy! Show less

What would you do when you feel you have no reason left to live? Would you give up or would you grasp at straws? Would you do or try anything to give your life meaning and rekindle the spark of life and joy that you once felt? Meet Evan, a man who is in this position and really has nothing left. He’s lost the love of his life and with her disappearance he feels there no reason to live. He searched for Melissa, in fact he left no stone unturned but no matter where he searched, it was in vain and Melissa was not to be found. Then in his darkest hour, Evan receives a mysterious letter that offers some hope. Evan is invited to play a game of chance in the desolate town of Waldberg where if he wins he will find his lost love. The other alternative is death at the hand of the Beast – a wicked looking creature, sort of a King Kong/werewolf blend, that hunts those who play the card game. There is no walking away from this card game – you either win or die!
The graphics are excellent as are all of the other technical aspects of the game. This development team is genius and with Deck of Fates they have undoubtedly created the most realistic HOPA game I have ever seen.
Your tools include an interactive map that will help you navigate quickly between the scenes; however, your most important tool is a card from the Deck of Fates. When you join the game you choose your first card from the deck and soon learn that each round of the game begins immediately and ends at dawn, which is when you will select another card from the deck – well those who survive the first round will select a new card.
There are some very different HOPS, many of which are creative including the storybook type. If I am not mistaken, this developer originated the very popular storybook type of HOP that was soon emulated by other game developers. Some of the puzzles or mini-games have a bit of difficulty but most of those in the demo are doable.
If you prefer the CE version of a game because of the extra goodies, Deck of Fates includes: hidden symbols to find, morphing objects that are found in the HOPS, multi-part achievements to earn, wallpapers, soundtracks, a card gallery, replay of HOPS, a bonus chapter and strategy guide.
When I tried the game’s beta test, it was one that I didn’t particularly enjoy because I generally don’t like games based on some sort of psychological terror. However, when I tried the demo something about the game grabbed me and I knew that I had to play the full game. I ended up purchasing the game and I am happy that I did because this is one terrific game! I wouldn’t want to play the game in the dark because the developer has created a masterpiece with some excellent jump scare moments. Deck of Fates is so well-crafted that I almost felt like I was Evan as I played the game. If you love a good scare, then you will probably agree that this is a perfect game for a dark and gloomy day. PLEASE, try the demo before you buy because you will most likely either love or hate Deck of Fates. Show less

I am nearing the end of this standard edition and let me tell you it's one long and interesting game. I'm giving this a low five-star rating only because of some of the mechanics in the game. Clicking items more than once to get them to work for one, and some of the items needed to complete a task were not typically what one would use. However, Mad Head Game developers have done it again! They have created an exceptional game.
This is one of the most intriguing games, not the most pleasant storyline, mind you, but it will draw you in--a psychological thriller--uncomfortable at times. The devs put an enormous amount of thought into this game. Bravo!
The HOPS are very unusual and different. One of the HOPS was applying the tile stencil to the objects to form a complete image; well, that took me awhile to accomplish. And there was no skipping on that one! But the mini-games are like no other I've ever encountered. I'm drawn to them and the devs deserve a great big hand for those! The maze alone seemed elementary at first, but it took some work on my part to reach the end. You need patience.
The storyline, which, as in most games, requires you to save someone. No surprise here! And there's always those beastly monsters you must conquer. Just pick a card, folks, to find out how to get rid of them.
The voiceovers, graphics, and music are fantastic. The map, hint button, and journal are very excellent tools. I'm glad I bought the SE version regardless of all the whistles and bells you may happen to get in a CE.
I highly recommend this game if just for the intrigue! In my opinion, there is no hand-holding in this game--that is, depending upon the level you choose. Try out the demo first and see for yourselves, so you can have a small taste of what is in store. Show less

I really enjoyed this game! The only thing I found a little odd - that it was filed under the Rite of Passage series...which normally is children dealing with strange rites of passage in their hometown. I prefer that over the traditional "desperately looking for lost love" storyline, but I still found this game to be a ton of fun. Proves that you don't need a fresh tale to have a great game - only a fresh and well-executed new take on the same. Many hidden object games have fairly predictable stories and unoriginal settings. This one begins with the story of a man (you) whose wife disappeared one day, and continues with his quest to find her.
The way the story unfolds strays from the standard tropes, though. You are invited to to play a game by a mysterious stranger who gives you the impression that winning will enable you to find your wife. From the very beginning, when you and the other players select your cards from the "deck of fate", you feel like you're actually participating in the story, and not just riding on rails.
The game plays out in several "rounds" (story acts) where you select a different card each time that gives you a special power. (There's a clever twist related to the cards that you find out about later in the game.) This adds a sense of urgency, as you get close to winning the game, only for the round to end and you have to start again with a different card.
The graphics, sound and voice overs are well done, and while the puzzles are fairly easy, they are just slightly different enough from standard puzzles to be interesting and enjoyable.
This game is worth playing just on the basis of the fresh storytelling. Show less

This is an amazing game! Sometimes you get a game, & it'll say, "Warning: psychological thriller", I shrug my shoulders, go on & play the game without much more thought. This game, however, shook me & spooked me! This is a thriller, & there's some blood & gore you have to get past as well. Lots of people die, & you're trying not to be next. No more, I HATE SPOILER ALERTS!
You can set your own difficulty in this game, which give the player some added flexibility. There's also a very good jump map.
The Hidden Object scenes were varied; some just lists, others were a bit trickier. You have to have a lot of patience with this game, as some of the HO's are moving sliders to make objects match up. This can be very difficult. There were also a couple of HO scenes where the graphics just were't clear enough to make out some of the well hidden items.
Most of the mini-games were repetitive. There were a few others, & they were rather simple to complete.
If I have a gripe about the game, it's the mechanics in it. I felt that the game pace was very slow & I had to wait for the program to catch up. There were pauses after making access to the next scene; there were pauses as the mini-games loaded. I know it's not my computer; I have over 300 Big Fish games, & my little buddy & I have played them all.
I would HIGHLY recommend this game, but there is a spook about this game that may turn some players away. It can be quite scary & morbid in places; if you can't stand the sight of blood, don't get this game. This SE is so good, I can't even imagine how amazing the CE would be. I may just have to try & find out. Happy Gaming! Show less
