BASED ON 30 MINS OF GAMEPLAY (DEMO):
There will be other reviewers that will go into detail about the storyline, detailed descriptions of the mini-games/ puzzles, and other various things about this game. I'll just touch on the PROS & CONS of the game:
PROS
1. An excellent storyline that could possibly be true in some aspects. This recent Christmas holiday brought in Virtual Reality as the new 'IN' game.
2. The cutscenes (for a change), are clear and distinct. Most cutscenes (in other games) are usually blurry, but this game is an exception. The lip-synching does a fair job also.
3. The graphics in this game are nicely done. The color palette matches the appropriate scene without becoming overbearing or using undertones.
4. When getting inside the virtual capsule, a unique feature is being able to choose from four different male faces and four different body types.
5. Another unique feature is when you have to type in messages to the male character on the laptop in the lab. You are ACTUALLY typing in your response, and he is ACTUALLY responding back, just as if you were texting each other or talking on Facebook. (**It's the 'little extras' that make a game stand out from the others**).
6. The mini-games/puzzles were really different and unique, but still difficult, IMO (some of them). Some gamers have the brains to fly through puzzles and/or mini-games without difficulties. Me, on the other hand, not so much. This isn't an area that I usually feel comfortable with, plus the fact, that in demos, your time is limited. (I know, I'm making excuses for my lack of skills).
7. An interactive map that shows you whether you've completed a scene, and where you still have things to do (a very helpful item to have). Plus it's transportable.
8. HOS's: The HOS that really stands out is the one prior to going inside the crypt. There are four coffins (the one lying on the floor, has a skeleton hand coming out from beneath it, which just gives us an added extra 'little something' feature that makes this game worthwhile). On these coffins are green, glowing dots. Down below you have four symbols and you have to match a particular green dot to that symbol. Once you do this, you then have listed items to find. This is a HOS that I haven't seen before but hope to see again.
CONS
I could find nothing negative to say about this game, other than the fact that I had to stop playing and face the REAL world. I will possibly purchase this game, as I enjoyed the CE, but don't need all of the extras.
By the way, if you take a look at the current Christmas season, Virtual Reality is an up and coming new way to enjoy playing your games. If you haven't tried anything related to VR, you don't know what you're missing. I tried a VR in 1998. I got to 'build' my own roller coaster, THEN take a VR ride. An AWESOME experience that I'll never forget.
All in all, give the demo a try. Enjoy :) Show less

Concerning the CE edition, some complained that the title is misleading and the game does not relate to virtual reality. But that's not the case. Virtual reality is the main topic of this excellent game which held my interest until the end. The storyline might be a bit complex, but it's all the same comprehensible and makes sense. Of course there are scenes with graveyards, medieval churches or fiery deserts; they are all part of the VR, are different sceneries in which VR-players may chase monsters or whatever they do in cyberspace. The game leads us through these simulated fantasy worlds and back again to reality, where we climb out of our Nexus capsule.
There is just the right amount of sci-fi stuff, to not annoy people who are less keen on tinkering with high tech. For my part I was happy that I didn't have to assemble motherboards all the time.
The whole virtual reality was (only in this game) invented by Professor Victor Stein, to enable his paralyzed daughter Naya to play like other children, simply in a virtual world. When Naya died, her consciousness survived within her virtual avatar. But this isn't even as fantastic as it sounds; I've heard of the idea before. Ever since it had been invented by Sci-Fi authors like Stanislaw Lem or William Gibson, the uploading of someone's brain onto a computer became the goal of scientists. By now, it's a topic of serious research and is called Whole Brain Emulation (WBE) or mind transfer.
I found Virtual Detective an enjoyable and highly entertaining game, because it provides such a variety of scenery and mini games. Of truly challenging mini games! I needed several attempts to guide that nanobot through the blood vessel and to jump all obstacles. But I prefer these kind of witty arcade games any time to dull slider puzzles - of which, by the way, not a single one was found in the whole adventure, if I'm not mistaken. The puzzles' descriptions are at times not very clear - but we always can peep into the walkthrough, can't we?
The characters seem a tad cartoon-like, especially the cute, pretty sugar-sweet Naya and the Xenos monsters. Those weird creatures have six eyes, pointy teeth and claws, poisonous tentacles and are somewhat undecided whether to be funny critters or dangerous vermin. But they mean anyway not much more than targets for a shooter game. I also marveled about Jean's bra, a stiff hard shell construct which could contain either deadly weapons or fluid reservoirs. Above all, it simply looks very uncomfortable to wear ;)
All in all the figures are congenial and winsome enough, even the evil ones. Even Aion has a rudimentary story and is not just a black shadow out of the blue.
It is a long game which lasted for me over seven hours. Although I believe that I had the one or other coffee break, now and then.
It certainly is suitable for kids and even may count as a Christmas game: it ends in a decorated living room, under a big, sparkly Christmas tree.
The standard edition has a conclusive ending. However, in the bonus chapter we can revive Naya; hence if you want to have an even happier end, I'd recommend the CE. Read my CE review for further details. Show less

The hidden object genre is not one that throws at us a ton of sci-fi, futuristic stories and you can imagine my surprise when I found out about Surface: Virtual Detective. Tackling the Virtual Reality trend that’s growing bigger and bigger in today’s real world and adapting it to the HOPA genre. In this latest installment of "Surface" you are working for the Virtual Detective Agency, investigating the growing number of people who go missing in a recently released Virtual Game, with them going comatose in the real life. The Capsule Nexus 2000 – the ultimate technology when it comes to VR – is Dr. Stein’s creation, but it certainly is not as safe and fun as it seemed at first. And when you bring a personal motive to the mix (your friend Jane goes missing in the game as well), things get even more intense! Although the game definitely has a more sci-fi approach than most hidden object adventure games out there, it’s still not too sci-fi so that those who are not really fans of the genre can’t enjoy the game itself! And this is a good thing because not everybody might be as happy as I was when I saw Surface: Virtual Detective available. And you know what made me extremely happy as well? You can create your character in this game, which is an extremely welcome addition for the male gamer (such as myself), since one can get a bit bored eventually to play the female lover who has to save the day over and over again. So kudos to Elephant Games for making this choice!
Regarding the gameplay, I only have words of praise. The hidden object scenes and minigames that you have to play and solve throughout your adventure are really well made! Attention has been paid to details and the developers did their best to stick to the theme of the game. You’ll have some surprise encounters along the way, as well as some intense – if not outright scary – moments every here and there, which is always a bonus. The HOS the game throws at us are varied and nice, with everything you can wish from a modern game, from mini HOP scenes to multi-step ones and everything in between. The mini-games and puzzles are, as I said, following the story quite nicely and they are inventive and fun to play, even though simple at times. The graphics are, however, the strongest point of the game. Attention has been paid to detail in all scenes, the characters are beautifully drawn and everything looks amazing. Nicely acted voice overs add to the value of the game, complementing the beautiful visuals and taking everything to the next level. Everything is done right in Surface: Virtual Detective! This is the SE version. The Collector’s Edition comes with the regular bling you’d expect from it: an extra chapter, re-playable scenes and puzzles, collectibles and extra art items to enjoy. A good selection of things that any gamer would now consider the norm for a Collector’s Edition title. All in all, Surface: Virtual Detective is a brilliant, beautiful and extremely fun game. It certainly comes as a breath of fresh air in the genre and I love its approach: from the near future sci-fi settings, to the beautiful characters and scenes, all the way to the voiceovers and entertaining story. This one’s a must play!

I figured it was going to be another fantasy disguised as a sci-fi action. Well, I was wrong. I am glad I gave it a try and was pleasantly surprised. Plenty of great innovative puzzles and nicely done hidden object scenes. Lots of action to keep me busy. Loved the robots, and putting together weapons and fixing all the technical gizmos to continue my quest to return to reality. The gameplay was exciting and lengthy. Fabulous graphics and characters.
Sci-Fi and Whodunit games are my favorites.

When the Collector's Edition of Virtual Detective was first released, I didn't get a chance to play it for about a week. After playing the demo, I was somewhat baffled with all the rave reviews this game received, because I didn't feel blown away by it. Before writing my review, I read some of the 5 star rating reviews, and then most of the 1-4 star reviews. One of the reviewers stated that you shouldn't be fooled by the title, because the title implies that this is a game on the cutting edge of technology, futuristic technology, right? The title implies that this game will be different than so many other games with the same story told a million different ways. Virtual Detective has a great start, the latest and greatest Virtual Reality capsule, the Nexus 2000, has just arrived at your residence. You have joined the Virtual Detective Agency to investigate a strange phenomena that is responsible for some of it's users becoming comatose in reality, and one of your friends has now gone missing in the virtual world. Just when you think this game has crossed the threshold of same ole, same ole, to wow, this really is different, you get a reality check of epic proportions. Yep, you guessed it, the game instantly reverts back to the same storyline, stuck in the past, do all of the same meaningless and predictable tasks, only this time, it just seems like everything is confusing and mismatched as if the virtual world is part of a vivid dream where things seem to make sense at the time, but they in fact don't make sense. I'm not saying this is a horrible game, it's not, but, it's also not a cutting edge sci-fi game that will blow your mind because it's so creative. It has all the familiar aspects, creepy little girl who seems lost, an evil witch who calls the shots, ghostly apparitions, skeletal remains of hero's who have failed their missions. There's still graveyards that have mysterious things recently buried that you must find a shovel to uncover, well's that are missing buckets so you can find that missing puzzle piece at the bottom, gargoyles that are missing stone pieces, and let's not forget to visit the chapel where magic books give us much needed recepies to enter portals once we find all the ingredients hidden in every nook and cranny, need I say more?
The Collector's Edition bling includes the ever so famous collectible Flowers that the Surface games are known for. Now I will say that I love the "new" flowers, that have replaced the Red and White pansies (or whatever kind of flowers they used to be) Perhaps the new modern flowers are just temporary to go along with the virtual aspect theme, but they are way more challenging to find because not only are they smaller, but they blend into the scenery much easier, especially when they hide them in a zoom zone. The CE also has 12 Collectible Morphing Characters and the usual achievements to earn as well.
The Hidden Object Scenes are decent but nothing new is really offered. There are Multiples of the same item finds, Silhouetted Shape finds, and one scene requires you to click on dots of lights to find the symbols or animals shown, and after they have been found, an Interactive word list is given.
The Mini Games are decent as well, all are doable and fairly entertaining. Below are brief descriptions of some of the games you'll encounter during the demo:
1) Reply to your employer by typing your response on the computer keyboard. (I had fun with my responses but still just got generic answers)
2) Arrange the polygons so that all the parts connect.
3) Use the boat to carry the living to the right shore and the reapers to the left. The boat doesn't move if empty and if the reapers outnumber the living you will lose.
4) Close the reapers fingers in the right order so that the numbers add up to the sum shown.
5) Create a path to the claw on the left of the web by lining up red dots located on 3 different wheels that can be swapped.
6) Drag the stained glass puzzle pieces and rotate them to fit correctly in the window.
7) Arrange each channel so liquid will flow through it from the top to the bottom.
The Collector's Edition has 12 Collectible Morphing Character, Collectible Flowers, a Secret Room (requires flowers to progress through the puzzle) 9 Achievements to earn, 10 Wallpapers, 10 Concept Art pictures, 5 Music Soundtracks, 2 Screensavers, a built in Strategy Guide and a Bonus Chapter, enjoy! Alright, I love science fiction. I love horror. I love them separately or together. I had a whole lot of fun playing this game primarily because I love the genre and want to see more of them. As an avid hidden object player, the audience for this game is ME. I wish there had been a bit more horror mixed in, but it was enough to add flavor. I give it 5 stars for style... and 4.5 for the entire game.
I will say though, if you like this game... check out Eternal Journey: New Atlantis (by far the BEST scifi HOG ever created... can't rate it highly enough!) and Beyond: Light Advent (very memorable, fresh game mechs, long play time, well done). If you haven't played these two games yet and love the genre, spend your money on New Atlantis and then Beyond. Both are easily 5 star games. Now, back on track...
Challenge
The hardest settings did not quite make the game a challenge for me. There were some moments in which 5 screens ago, there was one thing left undone for so long that by the time I got the object needed, I'd forgotten about where it was needed. Sometimes, that can add to the fun and challenge, but I think for this game, it didn't really make a difference. It's such a linear, stage-based game with so few screens available (7 maybe tops?) that you just click back until you have your "oh yeah!" moment.
There is some creative use of objects. There is also a fair bit of figuring out how to make these scifi gadgets work. I absolutely loved that.
Length
It was sufficient? I rarely time myself. I'm more of a "feel" person. This felt satisfying to me. I know that technically, it took over 5 hours because I left it on while doing other things, but I would guess that I spent about 4 hrs on the game play itself? It didn't feel too short. That's good enough.
Storyline
Meh. I actually am working on a virtual reality training program right now in real life, so it was amusing to see the dev's vision of VR. I also appreciate any scifi game released, since there are so few in the HOG genre. Otherwise, the story didn't do much for me. It felt insubstantial and derivative to me, but then, I read scifi like it's going out of style.
How I'll end this review... an observation: I had some free time today and decided to play Virtual Detective... I didn't. I was confused to see that it was already downloaded (which means that I certainly played it). The game is so unmemorable that I forgot what it was until I saw the screen shots. Fun at the moment but empty calories, I'd say. Still, genre fans will have a good time. Who doesn't want to wander around a space ship or futuristic lab? Show less
