Oh what a tangled stone web we weave, and oh what an unbelievable storyline we have! You're going to have to use a lot of imagination with this game's plot, because Tristan has found a way to return loved one's from the grave, and back into the loving arms of their families, in the form of walking, talking statues! The only problem with this procedure, is that the statues don't feel all warm and fuzzy inside, and their loved ones are having a difficult time loving something that's not all warm and fuzzy on the outside. This has led the statues to form a coup d'etat which is even more unbelievable, do the statues also have a brain but no soul?
None of the Royal Detective games have been as epic as the first game in this series, but I loved the storyline on this game as well. Another comparison I will make with the original Lord of Statues is that the graphics have gone downhill ever since, especially when compared with the last three games. I think somebody decided to switch from computer generated graphics to hand drawn graphics, they have done a beautiful job, but I prefer crisp computer generated graphics. As I stated earlier, you are going to have to use a lot of imagination here, just in the demo alone, I witnessed stone statues running, I glued a stone wing onto a parrot so a stone parrot could flap its stone wings, I pulled nails out of boards that were nailed into a stone fence, and I was chased by a stone doberman. Even though all this is impossible, I still found myself enjoying the demo, unlike some game demo's I wasn't bored, hoping the demo would just end. In this Collector's Edition version there are 28 Morphing Objects, and 12 Morphing Talisman's to collect as well as the usual Achievements to earn.
The Hidden Object Scenes are varied, and have done an amazing job of making them somewhat challenging. There are Keywords to find in sentences, Interactive List finds and Silhouetted Shape finds as well.
The Mini Games are very doable, somewhat on the easy side, but again, I didn't find any of the games to be boring. Below are brief descriptions of some of the games you'll encounter during the demo:
1) Swap and rotate square tiles to recreate the image.
2) Open a clasp by matching colors, by clicking two tokens at a time.
3) Restore the picture by selecting one of the 4 hands, then selecting one of the arrows to rotate pieces of the disc, rotating one, may affect others.
4) Swap drawer labels so that they match the combined images of each column and row image.
5) Press musical notes in the correct order by trial and error.
6) Complete the pattern shown by pressing piano keys to toggle the squares off an on.
7) Move amulets along tracks to their matching slots.
8) Select the gold rays in the correct order until all rays have filled the slots.
This Collector's Edition has 5 Music Soundtracks, 20 Achievements to earn, 13 replayable Mini Games, 13 replayable Hidden Object Scenes, 3 Screensavers available, 14 Wallpapers, 16 Concept Art pictures, 12 Morphing Talisman's to collect, 28 Morphing Objects to find, a built in Strategy Guide, and a Bonus Chapter, enjoy! I was so excited to see another Royal Detective game, but nothing comes close to the first one , Lord of the statues. Still my favorite.

There is a good map, HOPS are fun and mini games are not too hard. It flows very well.
Like I said, it was the story, somewhat creepy at times, with a little touch of Pet Cemetery.
Give it a try, not sure how long this game is, but I'm hoping it goes on for a while.

From the opening cut-scene, I could tell that Elephant had returned to much of the graphics glory of their past. They have always been my favorite developer but they took some giant steps backwards in graphics quality these past few years. So far the level of challenge is somewhere in the middle range. It has been an interesting story line too. If there is one downside, it appears that this will likely be a short game but I haven't played far enough to adequately judge that. I can see that there are TWO bonus chapters. Show less

Sometimes the demo just isn't long enough, depending on the tasks at hand. Or is it just me ?! In this Royal Detective tale, Tristan, a prominent sculptor, disappears and his wife, Olivia, hires the detective to find him. The story was on the bizarre side, but interesting. Knowing it was just a made-up game, I was still amazed at these life-sized creations moving along lickety-split without falling, clunking, bumping, crushing, even flying. Have to engage my great imagination for this one !
Henrietta was a sweet, contented statue whose pet parrot was also made of stone. Seeing and hearing her speak and noticing the moss starting to spread on her, made me realize the sadness of this story, knowing that her husband loved and missed her so much that he tolerated this ungodly replica.
The other statues and very angry leader, bent on revenge, set out to find and kill Tristan. They have not been lovingly accepted by the ones who asked Tristan for these anomalies. They don't get it...DUH ! How can you be all smootchy and cuddly with a rock with glowing eyes ? And what do you feed them...sand and gravel ? Just a thought ! Weird, very weird.
I didn't travel any far distance...just to where Tristan was hiding. But I did play some very good games. Even though they were not too difficult, I really enjoyed them. I encountered a few HOGs which I liked very much. They were challenging and interactive, very nicely done. I hope this game is not as heavy with mini games as many of the newer ones are. There should be a good balance of HOGs and games so that all players are satisfied.
The hand-drawn graphics were beautiful, IMO. Very clear and bright with excellent color. I really don't care whether graphics are computerized or drawn, but I know it is a definite issue with many gamers. The characters were great looking, even the statues were creatively rendered. The voices sounded clear and natural.
In my demo time I found 1/2 dozen morphs and several talisman...and I earned 4 achievements in just one HOG ! There seemed to be 2 bonus chapters or at least an extra game attached to the bonus chapter. I liked the unusual nature of this Royal Detective game and hopefully it contains more entertainment than I was exposed to.
As for purchasing, it's up in the air right now. Only because during the demo there were SO MANY things that required being unstuck, repaired, unlocked, dug up, etc. Plus finding the tools to accomplish such. It all seemed too laden with these features. For me, it was more like ironing or doing dishes all day when all I want is a fun, relaxing time-out...not more tedium. But maybe the rest of the game is not so cluttered with these things. One can only hope.
Just to be fair I gave it 5 stars. For all I know at this point, it could be super-duper. Seems to be a good game for beginners, others may breeze right through it. I am curious to know if Tristan has any emotional attachment to any of his amazing creations. Sort of like Frankenstein and HIS angry creation. It will certainly appeal to many other gamers right away, especially with the subject matter.
God Bless... Show less

This is the 4th installment in the unique series Royal Detective. Borrowed life tells of a sculptor named Tristan who crafts a living stone statue replica of his wife Olivia when he believes that she has died. When the story unfolds and Tristan learns that his wife isn't dead at all and he now has two Olivia's subsequently the story and gameplay drafts you into an adventure that is truly marvelous. What a conundrum! Tristan also has another dilemma on his hands when the other statues he makes come to life and turn on him for not being able to eat, can't enjoy life or feel pain or heat. Who would figure the statues would take on personalities of the people they resemble? You meet the living statue Henrietta, a sweet granny whose living statue granddaughter Maya tells you the secret of evil statues with red eyes and kind statues with green eyes. All of this comes together so you gain awareness of the age old story of good vs. evil and the story becomes even more incredible. Royal Detective: The Lord of Statues took the world by storm when it first came out in June 2012 and Elephant has put forth tremendous effort to do it again this time. The graphics are gorgeous and the hidden-object and puzzles sections are very entertaining. This was a wonderful surprise and long over due. The bonus game is a save the love of your life story which is an added plus. I wish I could give this more than 5 stars. The usual CE bling is all included and if you haven't played the first game purchase that CE version as well. You won't be disappointed!!! Show less

I write so few reviews but I read them all. I am not going to rehash everyone's description of storyline, etc. I really enjoyed this game. Felt the graphics were sharp and clear. Had fun with the morphing objects and replay of puzzles and hidden objects hunt. IMHO this game is much more enjoyable than recent CE releases.

I don't review games often but this is the kind of game I love! It's not that hard, it's fun to play, I like the story line. I don't do the sound so I can't comment on that. The puzzles are good, challenging enough yet not to bad. There is a jumping map which is great. There hasn't been a game out like this in awhile. Great job!
