I liked the story. Wasn't crazy about the hops, too interactive for me. I really liked the Scarab Maze several times in the game. What happens to Dupin was a surprise. This game came out Dec. 2016. I liked the white crow. It has 7 chapters. Show less

This is not the worst Dark Tales but also not one of the good ones.
Goods stuff:
Good graphics

The Lady Raven
Fighting mini games
Loved the scarab maze mini games
People actually looked deceased instead of just sleeping.
Bad stuff:
Story has nothing to do with Poe's The Raven, would have been nice to include some elements besides the names

You get to choose your type of ending but then the game ends abruptly. Maybe it continues in the CE, don't know.
Still don't know the purpose of the raven society.
Game felt very short.
I guess it's up to everyone to just make up their own minds about this game. Show less

Something strange began to happen to Allen shortly afterwards, his nightmares became reality, reality became his nightmares. Insanity consumed him, and sadly he took his own life. Detective Dupin has been asked to investigate his suspicious death, the only clue lies within his suicide note, penned to his lover, Lenore. The only problem is, she doesn't exist....or does she?
This is probably one of the better Dark Tales offered in a long time, and the hand drawn graphics are top notch. I'm still not blown away with this version of Edgar Allan Poe's: The Raven, because they all seem the same to me. The games always take place at night, the characters all look the same, the scenery always looks the same. There's just not much creativity, and in the Collector's Edition version, the only bling offered is "Little Devils" collectibles, and even then, there are only 12 of them, and they aren't hidden or even a morphing object which would have made the feature more appealing. One of my biggest complaints with all ERS games, is that on my large screen monitor, the game stretches too much and I don't have access to anything along the edges of the screen, so I have to play their games in a small windowed mode, or completely change my screen's resolution.
The Hidden Object Scenes are sparse in the demo, although some of the vast Mini Games could qualify for an HOP. At least the scenes aren't repeated, which is usually the case from this dev. In this demo, really there are just a couple HOP's offered, an Interactive list find and a Multiple of the same objects find.
The Mini Games are pretty good, and most are offered in a Casual or Hard mode of difficulty. Below are brief descriptions of some of the games you'll encounter during the demo:
1) Ring the bells in the correct sequence as shown in the clue.
2) Get the scarab to the finish, avoiding enemies.
3) Follow the card with the green mark to defeat your enemy.
4) Arrange the weapon card halves to create the correct image matches.
5) Press buttons in the correct order.
6) Place the tokens beside the images they correspond to.
7) Decrypt and enter the safe code by figuring out the number each shape on the clue represents based on the equations.
8) Find the phone number by trial and error.
9) Use arrows to move the birds skull into the correct slot which will continue until it hits an obstacle or trap.
10) Find identical masks by selecting two cloaked figures at a time.
The Collector's Edition has 23 replayable Movies, 29 replayable Mini Games, 20 replayable Hidden Object Scenes, 11 Wallpapers, 11 Concept Art pictures, 6 Screensavers, 4 Music Soundtracks, 49 Achievements, 12 Collectible Devil Imps, a built in Strategy Guide and a Bonus Adventure, enjoy! Show less

Although I own some of the earlier Edgar Allan Poe series games, I did not buy this one.
The graphics and music certainly create the Victorian Era ambiance.
I was not impressed with 'new and improved' Dupin. He looked seedy, worn, and in need of a bath and a shave.

I was not impressed with 'new and improved' Dupin. He looked seedy, worn, and in need of a bath and a shave.
The game play is a little slow but, I guess, that's sort of in keeping with the less hectic time in which the game is set.
The game has a useful interactive map, and that saves a lot of running around.
The HOGs and puzzles are nothing new, nor very challenging.
Most of the artifacts are congruent with the era, except for a dial phone but, okay, it's not that jarring.
Although I recommend this game, it's with reservations. Play the demo and decide for yourself. Show less

I really thought I'd like this game but a few things kept me from buying it.
Dupin looks wretched
Travel cut scenes time consuming and unnecessary
Puzzles relied too much on quick arcade skills and not actual thinking
HOPs not that interesting
This game may appeal to some but not me.
I don't recommend this game.

I see Pennmom36 who is a top contributor like me gave this game a 3. I don't think thats so bad myself. A 3 is still a buyable game.
That said I think my friend pennmom36 really summed up all you need to know and her review alone is all you really need. I don't agree with those who straight up bashed the game.

Look the graphics are not very good but that doesn't take away from the game play for me, I enjoyed the game.
So I'll keep this short, try the demo and be open minded. I have played the other games in the series and this was my favorite of them all.
I thought the HOP's were on par with most games out there and the game play was pretty smooth. I was actually surprised I liked this game I def tried the demo first because I haven't liked any of the other games in this series at all.
I recommend this game. Show less

I enjoy the Dark Tales series and have them all, but although I enjoyed this game for the most part, I can't say it was a very smooth flowing game and they have changed Dupin and not for the better.

As soon as I started playing this game I got reminded of an old game; it was :

It actually took me back to the time when I started playing Hidden Object Games . The only modern thing in this game is the white Raven. Everything else we had before and much better . It is still ok to play and you might have fun .
