We can enjoy a real feast with the shield-maiden in „Saga of the Nine Worlds: The Gathering“.
First it was unknown territory, a bit like sitting down with complete strangers at the same table, you feel a bit uncomfortable, don’t really know how to behave, but after some time and enjoying the starters (or playing more) you are beginning to appreciate the new company and relish this game which has all ingredients of a HOPA, still is different: More adventure than HO’s, different style of graphics, new twists and turns.
The opening video is nominated for an „Oscar“ in my books, should there ever be one for video game intros. I loved the bird’s view changing to human’s view, the anxiety in the eyes of the people, I felt sorry for the doll (and her/his owner) who was left behind in front of a burning house.
Gameplay was smooth, graphics fantastic, the music absolutely brilliant! The mixture of drums and shawms, a woodwind instrument „mothering“ the oboe family, is so catching!
I enjoyed the new twists and components in HO’s (don't want to give away too much, but the one in the giant's bag was hilarious!). It was fun fun fun.
The mini-games ranged from pretty easy to real head-scratchers, at least for me. Well, every player has a different handicap. All puzzles were very well presented.
I got the CE of this game, the Standard Version will be a treat on its own. Enjoy! Show less

Others have described the game in detail, so I'll not replicate their good efforts.
The graphics, music, background sounds, and voice-over dialog are excellent, and all that we have come to expect of this game developer.
Some of the HO sequences and mini-games are really off-the-wall, but in a challenging, not skip-button-reaching manner. One of the things that I have always liked about Eipix mini-games is that if you do hit the skip button you are shown the solution.
There are so many unusual, if not unique, features in this game that I do not hesitate to recommend it for your enjoyment.
I reviewed the CE game demo, and if you've read any of my other reviews you already know that I am not a fan of CEs, and I commented that I’d wait for the SE and buy that. Well, this is the SE, and I’ve added it to my collection.
As always, my caveat is that you play the demo and decide for yourself. Show less

The graphics were done very well and the voices were done tastefully. I couldn't read the font they used at all. I had to take a gamble just picking casual vs. hard. The story line to me was a little too complicated. Unnecessarily so. There was a lot of useless information that had absolutely nothing to do with the plot. The puzzles were average in skill level. There wasn't a whole lot of hidden objects..which was nice. This game is easy peasy. Good for beginners. Is it just me or are these games getting easier and easier?? Show less

I got further into the game in the SE version than I did in the CE by skipping cutscenes, so I decided to write a new review to reflect that. Some of the complaints I had with the CE still stand true, specifically:
• Overall, the gameplay was too easy, but the challenge level was better than usual for Eipix.
• The option to turn off banners was a disappointment, since there still were game-stopping banners every time I acquired something for my inventory, completed an objective, and got a new objective. When I say I want to turn off banners, I want to turn off ALL of them.
• There were a number of mini-quests that lacked emotional motivation within the context of the storyline. I didn't feel the urgency or danger I should have, given the plot.
• The slide-in conversation panels, while graphically-impressive, just slowed down the game even more than conversations normally do.
• Some backstory on Nordic myth would have been appropriate. If I hadn't already known that "All Father" referred to Odin and wasn't familiar with his mythos, the drowning, boat, and raven scenes would have made no sense to me.
That having been said, I think this series holds quite a bit of promise if the pace steps up and gameplay offers innovation and challenge. Some of the elements I really appreciated and enjoyed:
• Two of the HO scenes where the objects were actually hidden. The first was navigating a ship through a scene obliterated by fog, following the clues of the narrator to find the objects. The second was a triptych mosaic, an interactive list, and a lyre. Plucking the lyre's strings changed the three panels of the mosaic, hiding and revealing the objects, which were well-integrated into the design.
• The ability to try using inventory items, even if the choice was wrong. Instead of getting the black bar reading, "That won't work!" there was an animation of me attempting to use the wrong item and being unsuccessful. Unique and much more true to life.
• The rebus logic puzzle to defeat the boar...quite creative!
• The multi-step puzzle to fight the dragon in Midgard, although I would have stepped up the difficulty on levels two and three.
• The three map puzzles in the dwarf mines that required strategy.
• And, of course, the incredible attention to detail in the graphics and animation.
If you played the CE and disliked it, I recommend playing the SE demo and, as I did, skipping the cutscenes so you can see more of the storyline. That changed my decision and prompted me to purchase the SE. Show less

The good stuff includes the visuals, well-designed characters and some engaging puzzles as well as a respectable ending that leaves room for sequels (which are certainly implied by the title and the presence of more worlds to visit in the game). Kudos to the designers for not making us continually look for new tools (we got to use a knife twice after we'd sharpened it - any regular player knows how rare that is!).
The bad stuff includes popping banners, some overly sensitive hotspots (be EXACTLY on that spot or get a "try again" message) and a few too many locks and indents needing specifically shaped thingbobs to open or activate them. I know a little about Norse mythology, but if you don't some of the elements may not make a ton of sense (I doubt it will spoil the story though)
The pros definitely outweighed the cons and I'm looking forward to seeing what our Shield Maiden heroine gets up to next.
Recommended - but of course do try the demo before committing yourself as you may feel differently. Show less

The menus and texts were done all in style, I needed a little time getting used to them because they look different than usual, but I appreciate the effort taken in all these details, too.
The reason this game did not receive 5 stars is that the story, although interesting, sometimes takes a leap that I couldn't quite follow. But that being said, I really liked this game!

When the Collector's Edition version was first released, I tried playing this game, but it just wasn't holding my attention. I ended up finishing the CE demo about a week later. I think the graphics are awesome, but the storyline just drags. In my opinion, this Standard Edition is the better value, because the CE version has absolutely nothing other than some tiles to find. Here's a recap of my review so that you can decide which version, if any is right for you.
Apparently I am a Shield Maiden for the Princess. I'm pretty sure this is a job no one else wants, after all, a Shield Maiden basically takes a bullet for the Princess so she doesn't break a nail. Now we're not talking about a normal battle with other shield maidens (and arrow maidens I suppose) we're talking about protecting the Princess from a very angry, fire breathing dragon! There's no telling how many Shield Maidens have come before me, and by the end of the game, I'm not sure if either me or the Princess make it out alive.
At one point, I think I actually died, all I know is after doing my shielding thing, I woke up in a boat with some strange old man who told me that 3 companions would be joining me on my quest. Quest! What Quest? The Princess is nowhere in sight, this is my chance to get out of Dodge, or at least away from the creepy old man! Now I'm told that I have to actually Uber these 3 companions, and I'll bet you anything, not a single one will chip in for boat gas! First I travel to the woods to fetch the Huntress. Wouldn't ya know it, I have to save the "huntress" from an angry pig, her resume isn't looking too good from my point of view, just saying. Next I'm off to see the Seer, and I've seen enough already! This dude has a few loose nuts and bolts because he has strapped a pair of giant antlers onto his back! Incredible he tells ME to prove myself worthy, I'm going to just let it go at that and agree that we don't "see" eye to eye. Finally I Uber my little boat over to the Skald. Turns out a Skald is a musician with a really bad attitude. Let's see now, I have a Huntress who can't hunt, a Seer who doesn't see straight, and a Skald, someone has a vivid imagination and it ain't the dragon! By now, I'm seriously considering defecting to the Dragons Team, so thankfully, the demo has ended.......but the Saga continues......
Usually I prefer the Collector's Edition versions because I like finding all the extra's, but the 37 Collectible Yggdrasil Tiles thrilled me about as much as the demo did, zilch! Probably because I don't like collecting things I can't pronounce. Apparently there are 8 collectible Characters, I didn't bother looking for them because I was too busy keeping an eye on that Seer fellow, I don't trust him.
The Hidden Object Scenes were okay, but nothing thrilling. Most of the HOP's are in the form of finding Keywords, two of which involved a map, another was divided into 3 rooms. I did like the Interactive List find HOP on a Stained Glass Window that required you to strum 3 different strings to switch sections of the stained glass.
The Mini Games were decent enough, and definitely the best part of the entire game. Below are brief descriptions of some of the games you'll encounter during the long, boring demo:
1) Recall the dragons attack pattern then press arrows to shield the blows.
2) Use different lengths of vines to repair a net.
3) Plan a strategy by choosing the logical item in equations.
4) Swap tokens along the connecting lines until each is next to its corresponding symbol.
5) Press arrows to align the outlines inside the crystal with the red lines in the rock.
6) Hang the crystals on the correct hooks so their shadow fills the outline on the wall.
7) Swap tiles so that the numbers on the equals the number of end points.
8) Drag the lines so that one of each symbol is contained within each of the 4 shield segments.
9) Pluck the strings in the correct order referencing the length of the snakes.
10) Connect pairs of the same symbols with lines that don't intersect.
11) Swap the arrows.
The Collector's Edition has 4 Concept Art pictures, 8 Wallpapers, a Book of Origins Journal, 8 Collectible Characters, 37 Collectible Yggdrasil Tiles, 14 Movie Videos, 6 Music Soundtracks, 15 replayable Mini Games, 11 replayable Hidden Object Scenes, a built in Strategy Guide and a Bonus Chapter.
