fromOriginally, Elephant was developing a dark fairy tale game with no HO's, 70% through, they realized their mistake and Mystery Trackers: The Void was born! Elf didn't join the team until Black Isle!

Professor Xiao had been working on a Space-time continuum theory for quite some time, only to hit a brick wall dead-end every time. He nearly gave up on the project altogether, when an unfortunate tragedy killed his brother and his wife, leaving behind their only daughter Sophie. The Professor soon realized that Sophie was no ordinary 13-year-old child, she was a child prodigy! After earning her Masters-degree, Sophie was able to solve the problems the Professor couldn't, and they were on the verge of a major discovery when something went horribly wrong. Blackhill is now engulfed in a strange and ominous mist, something evil lurks within The Mist Over Blackhill, something deadly!
I was asked whether or not I wanted to take Elf with me on my investigation! Okay, I'll admit that some helpers are annoying and unnecessary, but we're talking about Elf! Mystery Trackers and Elf are one and the same and he has been by my side since Black Isles, YES I want to take Elf with me! MT is a series that I fell in love with immediately. I didn't discover this series until Four Aces was released, and I loved it so much, I played the previous games back to back. One of the reason's I loved it was because there's something about Elephant's graphics that give you a certain feeling or realism, a sense that something bad has happened, a creepy vibe in an abandoned town. I also loved the Morphing Objects and hope they never do away with this staple feature!
I have a couple of legitimate gripes with Mist Over Blackhill however, one story-related, the other Collector's Edition related. As far as a CE version, the abundance of bling is good (although I'm not going to humiliate Elf by dressing him up as a baby or forcing him to play bongos) but 3 small chapters, really? No re-playable puzzles or HOP's, really? Now as far as the storyline goes, they broke the number one cardinal rule in a truly frightening plot, NEVER SHOW THE MONSTER! (especially if the monster is a black cartoon fog monster!) Wouldn't it have more of an impact if you DIDN'T know what was lurking in the fog? If victims were snatched by unseen forces and you never know when and where? (btw the answer is yes)
The Hidden Object Scenes are varied with Silhouetted Shape finds, Morphing Object finds, Keywords in sentence finds, finding 3 bottles to open up the Interactive List finds, and Combination finds where you find items that are the result of 2 pictures combined (watering can + seeds = a plant or flower) and there are small Zoom Zone HOP's where you search for 6 items in a Zoom Zone. I found some of the scenes to be blurry and some items unrecognizable, especially when trying to figure out what pictures were on the combo drawings.
The Mini-Games are my favorite kind, for the most part, I love the "tinkering" type puzzles where you set gauges and tinker with lights etc. Below are brief descriptions of some of the games you'll encounter during the demo:
1) Replicate the pattern of lights shown, 1 affects others.
2) Rotate center crest and slide outer frags to complete crest.
3) Swap tiles to create a path that allows current to flow.
4) Rotate discs until all dots fill the holes.
5) Press buttons to arrange the voltage shown on the clues.
6) Swap tiles to match the pattern shown.
7) Swap tokens w/direction/moves to guide tile past wolf tiles.
8) Swap images to restore the picture.
This Collector's Edition version has 8 Wallpapers, 8 Concept Art pictures, 4 Music Soundtracks, a Secret Room, an Album to assemble 4 puzzles with 32 collected Picture Fragments, 19 Achievements to Earn, 24 Morphing Objects, 12 hidden Elf Outfits (Musician, Cook, Writer, Baby, Santa Claus, Ninja, Soldier, Clown, Magician, Astronaut, Athlete, Firefighter) 3 Chapters +Bonus Chapter and a built-in Strategy Guide, enjoy...and say YES to ELF!

The good old Mystery Trackers are back, we are an agent and – for the very first time - may choose, if we want Elf at our side!
So, agents, first task: choose your assistant or go ahead without him.
We stumble into our mysterious case on a bike ride, when we stop near the town of Blackhill, lying under a thick mist. Strange and we cannot leave that uninvestigated! In the town we see some shadowy outline in the mist and hear a voice, shouting for help. A man rushes us into his shop. He tells us, the shadows are monsters, and they started to come out of the fog after some mysterious flashes happened around the mansion of a scientist, Professor Xiao. An experiment, gone wrong at the Professor’s house? Possible, as according to the shop keeper, the Professor is a good man but his scientific work may bear some risks.
No way, the monsters must be stopped, so we need to reach the scientist’s mansion over the hill to investigate the source of it all.
A fast paced game, a lot to do and many variable HOS and puzzles on our way. The story may be not new but is thrilling enough. Though a look at the strategy guide reveils: the game is very short, only 3 chapters plus the bonus chapter. The extras are meagre too: no replay of HOS and puzzles. Besides the secret room, the usual incentive of collector’s editions, the bonus content offers sort of a dressing room for Elf, an Album, where you can put together collected picutures pieces, wallpapers, achievements and concept art.

I felt bad for the snow covered kitty out in the snow. Loved the Elephant Topiary. The bonus chapter had a surprise in the story and I wonder if the next MT will run with it.
When you collect a paper Elf, he is placed in a room all dresses for a occupation. There is some movement with them. I guess if your into dressing your pet you may like this.
I had a place where it froze up. I had to stop and restart. Try for yourself. Show less

REVIEW BASED UPON ENTIRE GAME
3 Chapters Plus a Bonus Chapter – Strategy Guide: 37 Pages - Time: 4 hours.
OVERVIEW: OVERVIEW: Detective! Climb aboard an interdimensional roller coaster as you spiral between time and space and enter parallel universes! Out of the fog and into your life comes monsters! Yes, nasty, red-eyed interdimensional nasties are invading the small town of Blackhill! You and Elf are off to a small town to tackle these denizens of the fog. Working on project involving the space/time continuum, Professor Xiao and his genius niece, Sophie, opened a portal into a parallel universe. When Sophie, the professor’s niece, is kidnapped, you, with Elf at your side, are off to save her and investigate this case.
QUALITY OR QUANTITY? Quality! What else can I say – Elephant is one of those champagne developers whose games I truly enjoy. I love the story which revolves around the string theory of quantum mechanics and parallel worlds. This is another great entry into this series! This game should appeal to all the Elf lovers out there! The graphics are decent. The pace is excellent with plenty of activities to keep you occupied traveling through time and space.
THE POLAR OPPOSITE! Quantity! What a disappointment! This game very short. I finished it in less than four (4) hours including the bonus chapter. It appears that with each game produced, they are becoming shorter and shorter not just for this developer but others as well. Also, I also wish there was an option to replay some of those puzzles. I found a few difficult and would like to play them again. You cannot replay any HOP scenes either.
QUANTUM MECHANICS: This game is short on extras! You collect twenty-six (26) picture fragments to complete photos at the end of the game. You also collect twelve (12) figurines of Elf attired in different costumes. This is a nice whimsical addition to the game. Although not a dog person, I felt they were adorable. There are twenty-four (24) morphing objects. I found all somewhat easy to locate. I counted twenty-one (21) achievements to earn.
TO ELF OR NOT TO ELF: I have only purchased a few of these games due to Elf. There are some of us who are not dog lovers or do not want helpers in the games. However, you do have the option to forgo his help. He will frown and go away dejected – but - will not be seen throughout the main game. However, why didn’t this developer offer this in the bonus chapter? You cannot opt out of using him and he is used quite a bit in this chapter.
BONUS CHAPTER: It is related to the main game with the same characters from that game. In the bonus chapter you must save Professor Xiao and Sophie from an evil organization from an alternate universe. When the professor is kidnapped you will be zipping back and forth through time in alternate realities. Like the game, I did not feel it was long enough to be worth the additional price of the game.
HOP SCENES: There are twenty-three (23) HOP scenes in the game – five (5) of those in the bonus chapter. This also includes several mini-HOP scenes which require searching for a small number of one item. They are varied as well. However, I felt the ones in the demo were better created than the ones after the demo. They include the usual lists of items, silhouette, matching and storybook scenes. However, there were two I felt were rather creative. There is one which is a rebus scene in the demo and in the main game there is one which has looking for patterns or pieces of the scene instead of actual items. There are also several scenes in which you search for four (4) morphing objects after locating items within the scenes.
PUZZLES: There are thirty-three (33) puzzles within the game. They vary in difficulty and style. Most are relatively easy; however, there are a few which are difficult. Some of the puzzles relate to the theme of this game. However, to create puzzles based on the theme of this game would be rather difficult. Unless you are an “Einstein,” it is probably better the developer DID NOT base puzzles on this branch of physics.
SPOILERS: HERE ARE SOME OF MY FAVORITE PUZZLES AFTER THE DEMO:
A. Assembly puzzle. Create three images by choosing between patterns which, when combined, will produce a given image.
B. Kill the “itsy bitsy” spider’s polar opposite! Physical puzzle. (1) Place triangles on a square which acts as a shield before a worm tries to invade. (2) Click on a target when cross hairs enter a glowing orb.
C. Through the looking glass. Assembly puzzle. Using four buttons with different geometrical shapes, recreate a “mirror” image to one given.
D. Map puzzle. Follow directions and lead your car to various locations to get to your final destination. You will need to move the screen to locate the landmarks
E. Queens 8 Puzzle. Ye olde chestnut in which you must place (in this case) chips on a chess board so that no row or column has more than one chip within it.
F. Escape puzzle. On a grid move a detective from square-to square avoiding beams of light which rotate after each move. If you get zapped by a beam of light – you must start over.

Elephant's Mystery Tracker saga began 8 years ago and this is the fourteenth edition of their popular series. With so many games in this long running Detective Mystery, it's obvious that some fan's are less than enthusiastic with this latest release which explains the mixed reviews thus far. The developer's at Elephant seem to understand this conundrum since they give game club members the option of eliminating the use of "Elf the dog" in the game. Past reviews of previous games in the series have shown that some casual gamer's just don't care for a helper throughout the game; some even find it annoying. I'm actually ambivalent about "Elf" but I did opt to include him for this release...
You play the role of Detective Emily Patterson who's on a quest to once again venture into a parallel world thru a space-time continuum device in order to track down Professor Xiao (pronounced Zow). The local citizens of Blackhill deduce the origin of an army of Shadow Monster's with some experiments Professor Xiao has been carrying out in his mansion on the outskirts of town. Find out the truth from Sophie, save the citizens of Blackhill, save your father, and banish the villainous Shadow Monster's......
Only you, the best Mystery Trackers Detective, can do it! This installment offers the same predictable collector's edition bling like previous editions of the series. The main game took me about 3 hours to complete (which I think is a bit short) and the bonus chapter took another 40 minutes. Overall I do think this is a 5 star game experience, even though it's not my favorite in the series. Cheers!
In this series so far....

• Mystery Trackers: Raincliff
• Mystery Trackers: Black Isle
• Mystery Trackers: The Four Aces
• Mystery Trackers: Silent Hollow
• Mystery Trackers: Raincliff's Phantoms (My Favorite)

The voice overs were excellent, although I did get a little tired of our young scientist's high voice, but still, consistent with the character.
The HOS were good, even mixing it up a bit and looking for morphing objects occasionally.
As noted by a few sharp observers, there ARE re-playable HOS and puzzles, 'tho I don't usually do them. In the case of Elephant Games I always replay, and don't want to solve the puzzles to easily:)
I rarely do this, but I'm going to recommend purchasing the CE version of this game as you learn more about the new adversaries (see above) and it rounds off the game nicely.

I was getting so desperate for a decent CE (and have loved other Mystery Trackers games) I thought I'd give this one a good go.
Although there is a custom mode, even with sparkles 'turned off' they still appeared in the HO 'boxes'. This only happens with Elephant games and is a major annoyance. In the past I discovered turning off sparkles in both gameplay and HOPs cured it, but no option for no sparkles in HOPs anymore.
You could choose to ditch Elf the dog, which I did. I love dogs and work with them, but hate helpers canine or otherwise. This wasn't an option in the bonus chapter.
Lots of collectables as you usually get with these devs; morphing, picture pieces and 'Elf' pictures. I missed a lot of the morphing objects as not easy to find.
The game is too linear, just a few scenes active at anyone time, and I couldn't find a way of going back to find morphing items I'd missed. I must have found a good handful of screwdrivers - why do devs have you needing the same object over and again rather than keeping a useful item with you (as in Ye Goode Olde Days)?
I counted 30 chapters which isn't bad. In the bonus game we revisited a scene or three.
The bonus chapter wasn't a bad length for a change.
The puzzles I really wasn't keen on, and skipped most. I found it difficult to understand the instructions (which I don't usually). The HOPs were varied and nicely done. Some a bit list type, but others varied. Only one 'book type' story find the items; almost seemed like it was an afterthought.
All in all got 4 hours entertainment and that's not bad for the price. Show less

Hello friends! As always, I review mostly on the game play and leave the story line to others who do a much better job than I. Is this really #14 in this series? Excellent graphics, very clear, with no blurring when going in and out of close ups. I did note that the inventory items look a bit like cartoon graphics, but okay. Colors are very nice, even with a few blues and pinks now and then. ...Show more
Hello friends! Animation is very well done, with very smooth movements and appropriate facial movements, depending on what is happening at the time. Game play is excellent, no problems during the demo and it fit my large screen quite nicely. The voice overs are well done, being age and character appropriate, and show emotion, not just someone reading a script. There seems to be a little more character interaction in this addition to the series. Music is mostly very quiet unless something is about to happen, then increases in intensity. Sound FX are well done when used, even though they are very quiet. Could have been a little more background sounds. It's nice that we can choose to use our friend "Elf" or not during the game. I did, simply because I like him and he isn't a nuisance. He just helps us get into places we can't quite reach.
HOPs are quite varied, with straight lists, riddles, silhouettes, and highlighted words. Scenes are fairly clean and items are not difficult to find. It almost seemed like some of the items were darker in color so they would stand out more. I did not see where you could switch to something else if you did not care for the HOPs. Puzzles were fairly challenging and took some time and thought to complete. I actually had to skip one, as I couldn't figure it out. Hint system is very helpful and it does transport to longer locations. You do a lot of back tracking in this game, so get your tennis shoes ready. You have a jump map, but it is very boring and not necessary with the transport feature.
Collectibles aren't bad. We have a combination of varied morphing items, which morph fairly quickly, but are not difficult to find. We also have puzzle pieces, which are fairly large, but easy to miss, as what I ran across was in black and white. We need to find 8 pieces each to complete 4 different pictures in our album. We also have to find 12 Elf poster/pictures. These are pretty easy to miss, as they can be anywhere and are not all out in the open or hanging on a tree. Nice to have a variety.
The story in this one was a little different and interesting. The action was fairly constant, but the story seemed to move a bit slowly. There was enough challenge in the game and puzzles to keep me wanting more and not get bored. I think all levels of players will find this one fun and challenging. When I beta tested this one, I gave it a 4.75. Because of the quiet SFX, I have reduced it to a 4.5. That said, yes, I am adding this one to my ever growing collection of CE games.
As always, try it for yourself and see what you think. We all have different tastes in games and you may not care for this one at all. Thanks for the reviews. Play on! Show less
