By the time I got around to the third and final soul to redeem, I realized I was bored out of my mind. The storyline was pretty interesting in the beginning, and technically still was a good story, but I was doing the same tasks over and over. It seemed like all I was doing was opening cabinets, drawers and countless bags with missing emblems, not to mention searching for berries of every color known to mankind.
The mini-games and puzzles are decent, but some of them had instructions that were downright confusing, the ones that weren't confusing were either too simplistic, or simply rehashed puzzles, several times over, from all of the other series games by this dev. Some of them I did enjoy, and I really liked some of the Hidden Object Scenes, particularly the ones where you rotated rings to match up images of each item.
I would recommend this Standard Edition version over the Collector's Edition version because the Collector's Edition version really doesn't have much to offer. Other than the usual Wallpapers (blurry and uninteresting) Concept Art, re-playable HO's and MG's etc. there are only 11 scenes out of 5 Chapters worth of scenes that have a Collectible! Here's a recap of my review (with the SE series list) to help you decide which version, if either is right for you:
Santa Muerte had a dream that only you could save the world of the Living from becoming the world of the Dead. If 12 innocent souls are gathered before the stroke of Midnight on The Day of the Dead, Shibalba will rise from the Underworld, and the world of the Living will kneel before him. You have given Redemption to countless souls over the years, but this time, everyone's soul's are at stake when the Dead Arise and the Living Fall!
As with all Redemption Cemetery games, the goal is to open portals and right the wrongs made in the past to redeem their souls and create a more favorable future outcome. You will need to redeem the souls of Aurellia, Bernardo, and Marie, but you aren't flying solo on this Myth-Debunking paranormal, soul-redeeming investigation, because once again you get a nameless Crow to soar to great heights to retrieve those items that have mysteriously ended up in places you can't reach.
Once again, they have included Conversation Choices, but they are a meaningless waste of time. I played the demo first, and then purchased the game at which point I created a new profile to start from the beginning. I discovered that once again, the conversation choices don't impact the outcome because I chose the opposite responses on purpose the second go-round, and the questions are so vague that the answer is always the same. I had the choice to ask something to the effect of Who are you vs how did you find me or something similar, the answer was the same both times "it doesn't matter, time is of the essence" response. The Rock, Paper, Scissors game with a pair of skeleton hands is the same scenario, the first time I chose rock which was wrong, then paper which was also wrong. The second profile I chose the Scissors because that was the correct answer the first time, again it was wrong, so it doesn't matter what you choose, it will always be the third try wins. My point is, why bother to include multiple choices if it doesn't affect the outcome, therefore, doesn't matter? If you want a smash-hit game dev, why not create a game that actually has features that will change the outcome of the game like in Bad Dreams Coma?
The Hidden Object Scenes could be more interesting and definitely more challenging. For example, on one of the HOS, silhouetted shapes are shown on both sides of a purse that requires you to place items from the purse into the silhouetted shapes, but the cursor not only changes to a hand, but it selects the items in a specific order so all you have to do is click anywhere because you're going to pick up what the game was programmed to pick up, not the item you want to choose. There are Keywords in Sentence finds to progress the story, Finding & Replacing HO's where they belong on book pages, Multiples of the same Object finds, Multiple Symbol Shapes finds, and several smaller Zoom-Zone Hidden Object Scenes (more zoom-zones than regular HOS) to find 8 broken buttons, 8 silhouetted shapes or a handful of Listed items, and so many berries you'll wonder why you didn't just wait until they grew back, or is that a feature in TM games? None of the HOS have many items to find, in fact, the first HOS only required you to find 1, sometimes 2 items per sentence in the Keyword finds, but then again, this is a game who's targeted audience is puzzle-lovers, and not so much hidden object fans.
The Mini-Games are in abundance, everytime you blink, there's a new puzzle so if you don't like puzzle-heavy games you'll probably hate this one. Below are brief descriptions of some of the games you'll encounter during the demo:
1-Play a game of Rock-Paper-Scissors with skeleton hands.
2-Arrange the gems according to color & then numerically.
3-Swap pie sections of the button to complete the design.
4-Select the needle when it's in the green zone x4.
5-Select and drag the skull through the shape w/o touching sides.
6-Light all candles, one affects others. (Casual/Hard)
7-Drag rows horizontally and vertically to recreate the image.
8-Use a lens to find symbols in order from simple to complex.
9-Move tokens in an L formation to their matching colored slots.
10-Swap puzzle pieces from the same ring section to complete.
11-Slide puzzle pieces to form a hole around the parrot shape.
12-Rotate 4 sections until they all fit together in the center.
13-Click to change column section images to match themes.
14-Select & drag all rows to create a path for the water to flow.
15-Select matching pairs of symbols under clouds that move.
The Collector's Edition version has 12 Wallpapers, 9 Concept Art pictures, 7 Screensavers, 4 Music Soundtracks, 19 Movie Cutscenes, 13 Achievements to earn, 13 re-playable Hidden Object Scenes, 18 re-playable Mini-Games, 11 Collectible Tokens that give ancient Underworld descriptions from Aztec, Egypt, Greece, Japan, Tibet, Inca, Babylonia, India, Scandinavia, Europe and Maya) 5 Main Chapters +Bonus Chapter and a built-in Strategy Guide.

It is clear to me that Developers are not reading our reviews; or if they are, they are not paying attention. Ok, so if you have played this series previously, you are going to be bored. It's the exact same game and exact same stories. The mini games are tedious. You will find yourself opening up cabinet after cabinet looking for items you have looked for a million times. The characters are not interesting either. In previous versions, I wanted to save the spirits. Perhaps, I am less compassionate now, but I truly did not care. If you have never played this series, you might like it, but I suspect if you are a gamer with any experience you will be bored and mosty unable to really get into it. Sorry. Show less

It pains me to say, but it has come to the point that I dread playing another Redemption Cemetery game and I use to love this series. Needless to say, Redemption Cemetery: Day of the Almost Dead has you traveling into the past and trying to save the lost souls. Still, the central theme that centers around the legend of the Day of the Dead is quite fascinating, although the game does not explore its full potential. The game also includes the option to select your own response dialogue, but since your choice does not at all affect the progress of the storyline, it feels half-baked at best.
As for the gameplay, Redemption Cemetery: Day of the Almost Dead plays it safe as usual. All of the Redemption Cemetery games are so similar to one another that I honestly do not know why there are still hardcore fans left for this series. The adventure part of the game could not have more predictable, the hidden object scenes are recycled and simple, and the puzzles are unoriginal and tedious despite the difficulty selection. Redemption Cemetery: Day of the Almost Dead’s one saving grace is its sights and sounds. Surely, the visuals are not anything totally creative or unique, but they are still pleasant and well-executed. We enjoy the pops of colors that are often given to the game’s otherwise somber palette as well as the melodic, but never distracting soundtracks. There may be hope for this series in the next edition #13 (which I'm certain there will be) I just hope we see Amax raise the bar to what this series once used to be...
