Welcome to the Museum of Mysticism and Monstrosity Mr. Cole. In the fifth game of the Demon Hunters series Ascendance you will play the game as Hector Cole a well-known and excellent Demon Hunter. You have been hired by the Director of the Museum Edmund Strange to investigate and above all find a missing tourist who never left the museum at closing time. You are the last hope Hector so get to work and delve into the mystery and find that missing tourist.
The Demon Hunters series is one that I have always enjoyed but to be honest as I played the demo I was skeptical that this was a game from the same series as it seemed to be somehow a comical parody but it might have been the corny dialogue. However, as I progressed in the game and got to the point where the demo ended things really heated up and I was hooked.
The HOPS are much the same as we always see so there is nothing new but there is a bit of a catch with some of the HOP scenes so you will need to keep your eyes open. Where I had the most fun with the game is the Puzzles that for me were excellent. Although we have seen them before they seemed a bit different and even a tad more difficult.
Once the storyline developed it became very good and made sense which often doesn’t seem to be the case with some games. As I moved forward I felt like I was part of the mystery and knew there was more to the story of the missing tourist. Was it all a hoax or is there truly something strange going on at the museum. For me the game became one that I enjoyed playing and it kept me involved as I moved forward. Thanks Brave Giant you created an awesome game with Demon Hunters V. Ascendance is entertaining and held my interest throughout the game. I now hope to see more of this series in the future. As always, please try the demo to see if you will enjoy Ascendance as well. Happy gaming! Show less

For me, this is all-around fun game, as all the rating factors come together into a five star rating. Always, I prefer the SE games as I am not one for collectibles, awards, etc. My play is casual, as I take time to look around each scene, read the story, and follow the dialogue. I want to be absorbed in what is happening.

Truly, horror is not my genre but I look forward to each game in this series.I think that's because the game execution is so consistent, all the mini-games and HOPS are integrated into the storyline. In any series, it is the storyline to which I pay particular attention. And in this game, there are really good plot twists, and to me, that means excellent pacing.
My review is based upon completed play of the game. As always, try the demo to get the feel of any game. Show less

I was surprised how many distinct scenic areas there are to go through, each with 5 or 6 locations for actions required. It took me awhile to play all the way through. It's not overly difficult and it gives you a choice to play a match cards option or seek and find.
I recommend this game!

REVIEW FROM COMPLETED GAME AND BONUS
This is a terrific game and definitely worth putting in your collection. You once again play Hector Cole who has to save your partner Carol. There is:
* Casual, Advanced, Expert and Custom modes;
* Voiceovers (with dialogue);
* Interactive map;
* Diary.
The graphics are great. Everywhere is crystal clear to see and to find the items you need. There is a good creepy feeling to the game and an urgency to find out what happened. Sound is good and the music is mainly orchestral.
The hidden object games are interactive straightforward, silhouette and find a certain amount of one item (eg: feathers). Items to find are clear to see and they had quite a good challenge to them. However, if you feel like a change, then you can play Shuffle instead.
I enjoyed the mini-games. There are a good variety and some really do make you think. However, none of them are too hard or take too long, so you can get back to the game fairly quickly.
So do you get the CE or SE? The bonus is a sequel leading up to what happened, there are 24 Achievements; finding 28 crystals and 28 morphs (1 of each in each scene in main game only); and 8 replayable HOPs and 8 replayable mini-games.
All up the game and bonus took me about 5 hours playing over the course of the week. I thoroughly enjoyed it too.
Overall this game is so worth playing. Thank you Boris and the team - I always look forward to your stories.

This game has completely abandoned that original plot, the original characters, and the original creepiness of being a demon hunter, and that utterly disappoints me :(
As far as the difference between the two versions, the CE version has Morphing Objects and collectible Crystals. The CE Bonus Chapter takes place shortly afterward as Hector recalls and relives a defining moment in his life during an interview by a journalist from Paranormal Magazine. There are no remaining Morphs or Collectibles in the Bonus Chapter which is fairly short, but decent. There are 5 Mini-Games and 4 Hidden Object Scenes within the BC, and you can't pick up any related missing Achievements within the replayable HOP's & Mini-Games. Here's a recap of my review to help you determine which version, if either, is right for you:
There's trouble a-brewing at the Museum of Mysticism and Monstrosity (enough said) Hector encounters more than his fair share of demons and monstrosities in this cursed museum but deciphering between what's real and what's really happening is the real problem. To solve this un-Demonic case, Hector will need the skills of an electrician, a gardener, a plumber, a detective, a doctor, a scientist and lastly, a witch to cast spells! hmmm???
I loved the first 3 Demon Hunter games, they were dark, creepy, and edgy, unfortunately, the last two games are none of those descriptions. This game is not creepy, it's very toned down in an effort to appease those that frighten easily. To me, this is just fence sitting, if you want to create a creepy demonic, edgy game, then go for it! But if you want to create a game that is less creepy, why on Earth would you choose a topic about a Demon Hunter? I apologize to Brave Giant for my less than favorable response, but I loved the first few games and this is just my opinion, I'm sure others will love it.
The Hidden Object Scenes are varied with Interactive List finds, Silhouetted Shape finds, Multiples of the same Item finds, and Fragmented finds. At least one of the items listed is a Morphing Object that needs to be chosen when it's in the correct form listed. There is an alternate Monaco Matching Card game available if you don't like HOS's.
The Mini-Games are decent throughout the game, although there's really nothing original offered. The instructions are clear and the puzzles aren't very frustrating to solve. Below are brief descriptions of some of the games you'll encounter during the game:
1-Collect matching pairs of keys.
2-Place tokens correctly to match the outer edge symbols.
3-Place eyes so that there aren't any identical colored eyes in the same row or column.
4-Trace symbols to see where to set each knobs position.
5-Rotate the double maze so that the blue & red balls land at the same time.
6-Place books correctly according to the clue.
7-Push books from largest to smallest on the clue.
8-Rotate discs to complete the image.
9-Swap fuses of different values to equal the numbers shown.
10-Turn all buttons green by moving sliders, 1 affects others.
11-Rotate and place puzzle pieces on the highlighted slots.
12-Rotate rings to place purple balls on the left green balls on the right.
13-Connect 2 colored wires to partial symbols that create the symbols shown.
14-Equalize the current by swapping colored tokens of different current amounts.
The Collector's Edition version has 8 Wallpapers, 4 Concept Art pictures, 5 Music Soundtracks, 4 Movie Video Cutscenes, 8 re-playable Mini-Games, 8 re-playable Hidden Object Scenes, 24 Achievements to earn, 28 Hidden Crystals, 28 Morphing Scrolls, 4 Main Chapters +Bonus Chapter and a built-in Strategy Guide, Demon's Be Gone! Enjoy :)

In 20 minutes, I fished a key from a crack, replaced both battery and bulb in a flashlight, bribed a crow, found and replaced several missing parts, patched a vacuum cleaner bag, and found and inserted any number of shaped keys. These kinds of chores are about as challenging and fun as doing a load of dishes.
About the best thing I can say is that the storyline was clearly meant for adults. I wish it had been less shallow and something we hadn't already seen a zillion times.

One thing which is a deal breaker for me on these games is the time I have to wait and can't use the mouse. This can involve cut scenes, irritating pop ups in which you are told the latest mission (yeah, we know) and the latest problem (ditto).
This particular game outdid itself on pauses. Here we not only got all of the above but also the most irritating and stupid voice over in which the voice actor, who sounded a little dimwitted, says really stupid things like "Here we go again" and "Well, that doesn't look good." No, duh.
The graphics in the twenty minutes I played were bright and filled with the standard death with a sickle statue, haunted house, a big hot air balloon in the shape of an eyeball (oooohhhh!) and a vending machine.
The puzzles I did try were boring and the whole time I was playing I thought I was completely wasting my time.
Inside the house it's dark and the light switch is inside a skull's mouth. It snaps closed and almost takes your fingers. Yikes! A pause while the voice says, "Well, I know what to do," or something like that. And then during this pause your hand GOES BACK INTO the mouth and it clicks the roof of the skull's mouth.
Before the light comes on a very fake white faced ghoul falls against you but it's pretty silly and of course the voice over comes again. And then there's the pop ups and then the voice talks again.
And then if you are like me you exit.
