If you love a great historical game Secrets of Great Queens has returned this time with Regicide. I loved the first game – Old Tower and have been waiting for two years hoping there would be another game in the series. History has been one of my passions so when I see a game based on historical events it is sure to be a keeper for me.

King Henri IV has been assassinated by Francois Ravaillac and you play the game as Alfonso Campanella the head of the Royal Secret Service. With your companion Adrianna at your side you are off to find out the truth of who hired Francois and to clear the name of Queen Marie who many believe was behind the assassination.

With most of the more recent games containing only three or four chapters this game is a treat with five plus the bonus game. The graphics are colorful and crisp with realistic looking characters and this always adds to my enjoyment of any game. While the characterizations are excellent, the voiceovers do not even attempt to sound realistic but that’s not surprising.
The HOPS are excellent and well-designed with many of them including puzzles. I enjoyed the variety in the HOPS and even those that were not my favorite list style were still very good. The Puzzles in the game were more interesting and most seemed to have a bit more challenge – another good thing about this game.
This is a wonderful and refreshing game without glowing dark eyes and some evil entity attempting a takeover of humanity! For many, this might just be another same ole, same ole HOPA game but since I love a great historical game based mostly on true events my criteria might be a bit different. My enjoyment of a game is mostly based on the storyline as well as the HOPS and Puzzles. Secrets of Great Queens: Regicide is quite entertaining to play and has a well-developed storyline. With excellent graphics, sound, and interesting characters Secrets of Great Queens becomes the complete package for me. Even though this is a game I will buy, please try the demo to see if it is one you will enjoy. Happy gaming! Show less

In this new installation Queen Marie is accused of the assassination of King Henri IV. We take up the challenge of finding the real culprit, so we set out on the task of exposing the truth, and saving the Queen. The game is based on true events for the most part and is quite interesting. This time in history was very volatile, filled with political corruption and betrayals, greed, religious upheaval.
The characters are interesting and their realistic appearance put a special touch to the beautiful graphics. The scenes are nice and clear with rich color and good background detail. The storyline is intriguing and makes sense, which added to my enjoyment of the game.
There is a good variety of puzzles and HOPs. They are all excellent. I loved the HOPs. The puzzles were more challenging for me, but not so much as to keep me hopelessly baffled.
Secrets of Great Queens: Regicide provided a relaxing day's entertainment. I hope there are more of this type game in the future. Fantasy and ghoulish games are so crazy numerous at Big Fish, that I jump in joy when games with a different theme come along,
Have a look at the demo and you might like what you see, maybe enjoy a bit of history at the same time.

In the first edition of Secrets of Great Queens: Old Tower, we were introduced to this new HOPA series from Vendel Games. Regicide tells a similar tale, but sets in a different part of Europe. This time the King of France has been assassinated and Queen Marie d’ Medici has been accused of witchcraft and the murder of her husband! As a member of the Royal Secret Service, you need to track down the real killer and prove the Queen’s innocence. Are you ready for the next assignment?
I have to give Vendel games 5 stars for the engaging storytelling style which successfully maintains the momentum of the game from start to finish, making it a really enjoyable experience for casual gamers of every level.
On the visual side, Secrets of Great Queens: Regicide may look a bit out-dated. I think it was intentional though so the developers could set the tone for 17th century Europe by incorporating washed-out colors and old-school artwork, but that's what makes this second installment so unique. Secrets of Great Queens: Regicide is pleasant to look at, because of this use of old-school artwork. The locations are wonderfully designed and the ominous undertone that stays prevalent throughout the game is incredibly effective. The game could have been crafted to be more difficult to play, but sometimes you just want an adventure that is relaxing and intriguing...it all depends on what mood your in. If your looking for a real mind-boggling game, this isn't the one.
Gameplay wise, Secrets of Great Queens: Regicide in my opinion is unexpectedly creative. The main adventure portion plays it pretty safe, but the hidden objects and the puzzles make up for that. The hidden object scenes are plenty and addicting to say the least. Vendel Games went outside their comfort zone and added various creative twists to these scenes; they are not just some random junk-piles, but actually fit right into the story. As for the puzzles, there is a nice mix of easy and semi-difficult ones. The more challenging ones are usually just variations of the classic formats, but cleverly done in a way that adds a layer of complexity. The main game took me a little over three hours to complete and the bonus chapter’s runtime was about an hour. The Collector’s Edition comes with all the usual; a strategy guide, wallpapers, concept art, soundtracks, achievements, collectibles, and morphing objects. I chose to play the CE version for all the extras and the bonus chapter but if that doesn't appeal to you then go with this SE version. I really think this game deserves a better rating than 3 stars and I look forward to the next edition of Secrets of Great Queens too. Cheers! Show less

I actually played this game for a second time today! I purchased the CE version and finished playing it when it was released in November. I played the demo of this Standard Edition today and remembered how much I enjoyed it, so I downloaded my CE version and played it again, and still enjoyed it! The graphics are beautiful, the storyline is a genre I really like, the puzzles are challenging but not frustrating, and there are a ton of Hidden Object Scenes, what's not to like?
The CE Bonus Chapter takes place shortly after restoring the Queen's reputation, but this time you play as Adriana, your helper/companion from the main game. When Alfonzo's injured horse returns without him, Adriana sets out to find him. There are 7 Mini-Games and 5 Hidden Object Scenes within the BC and you receive a New Collection Box to fill with 5 new Royal Collectibles, and there are 9 Morphing Objects and a final Jigsaw to assemble after finding the Morphs. Here's a recap of my review to help you decide which version, if either, is right for you:
The King of France is Dead! Like most Royal Monarchies, King Henry IV had a price on his head from those that wished to remove him from the Royal Throne through the act of Regicide. As head of The Royal Secret Service, the Queen has asked you to pledge your loyalty and prove her innocence, and that of Lenora's, Her Majesty's Lady-in-Waiting. For Francois Ravaillac, the odds are stacking up against him to uncover the truth, someone has gone through a great deal of trouble to frame Her Majesty, but why? ♛♚
For the first time, I'm disappointed that a game doesn't have a Helper! I was really hoping Captain Louis would return from the first game in this series! He was so funny and so good looking that for me, he was the focal point and the star of the show. As for Regicide, the graphics are amazing and some of the best I've seen in a long time. The characters movements and voiceovers are flawless, the objects are credible for the time period, the music does exactly what it's supposed to do, immerse you into the game without being aware that it's doing so! We HOPA fans tend to ignore the details, but I tend to stop to smell the roses lately, and Vendel Games has obviously put a great deal of effort into this game.
As I stated above, my only disappointment with this game was that Captain Louis didn't make a comeback and that I had to play as Alfonzo, a male character. Eventually, Adriana joins you as a helper/companion, but she's just not that appealing, and certainly not as humorous or good-looking as Captain Louis!
In the Collector's Edition version, each scene has a Morphing Object that not only morphs at a slower pace but doesn't morph to an object that sticks out like a sore thumb, and some of them are really tough to spot! For every 5 Morphs you find, a Jigsaw Puzzle is unlocked, (6 total) but the puzzles are very basic and simplistic. There are only 20 or so pieces to each jigsaw and the puzzle pieces are large and don't even require rotation. I would rather unlock a single Jigsaw Puzzle that I could choose how many pieces I wanted (from 24-3000) rotatable pieces and the ability to save it as a wallpaper and to be able to assemble it more than once, that would make a CE totally worth the price difference! When you find the Morph, the icon will turn to a blue gem to remind you that you found it already, a feature I really appreciate. The CE version also has Collectible Royal Objects that unlock extra Hidden Object Scenes, and there is a pull-down tab at the top of the screen that will have a checkmark once you found the collectible.
The Hidden Object Scenes are plentiful in this long-awaited Secrets of Great Queens edition by Vendel Games. (aka Nikolay Vendel Games) Not only are they in abundance, but they vary with different styles each time and are fairly well done I might add. I'll go one step further to say that Vendel Games has done a fantastic job choosing the locations of the HOP's as well such as finding silhouette shaped symbols hidden within a Knights Armor. Some of the HOP's are back to back or at least have a smaller Zoom Zone HOP before or after. There are Interactive List finds, Silhouetted Shape finds, Interactive-Progressive finds, Spot the Difference finds, Multiples of the same Object finds, and finding silhouetted shapes using a Magnifying Glass or special lens. Well done Vendel, and I'm not even a fan of HOP's lately because they never seem to even attempt to actually hide objects nowadays!
The Mini-Games are rather odd at times, especially after the demo. They aren't bad, but some of them have hard to understand instructions (especially the repetitive games that require rotating & sliding through tile selections) and because some of them are new variations those same puzzles are difficult to solve by just winging it. They aren't all like that so don't freak out, change is a good thing, otherwise it's just another cookie-cutter game. I really enjoyed the change and the challenge. Below are brief descriptions of some of the games you'll encounter during the game:
1-Swap tiles to create a path from the top left to the bottom right.
2-Remove snakes that aren't blocked by other snakes.
3-Swap tiles along tracks to complete the pattern.
4-Examine the letter and find each symbol shown on the decoder.
5-Recreate the decoded symbols by swapping partial sections.
6-Rotate disc sections to complete the decoded symbol's images.
7-Click when 1, 2 and 3 hands are within the targeted circle at the same time.
8-Complete the image by rotating the main circular image and smaller discs on the edges.
9-Find and select the Crest that's identical to the one in the letter.
10-Select and drag the quill through the correct route.
11-Select the correct symbols in the correct order according to the clue found in the HOP.
12-Swap tiles to recreate a map using the center button to swap upper & lower tiles.
13-Rotate disks using central rotation disk to swap pie-shaped color-coded sections.
14-Repeat the sequence of moves to fight your attacker.
15-Follow several recipes in the order shown on clues.
The Collector's Edition version has 13 Wallpapers, 13 Concept Art Pictures, 9 Music Soundtracks, 16 Achievements to earn, 30 Morphing Objects (9 BC Morphs + Jigsaw) that unlock a new Jigsaw Puzzle for every 5 Morphs found, 19 Collectible Royal Objects, (5 BC Collectibles) 5 Main Chapters +Bonus Chapter, enjoy the Royal Adventure.

I liked this more than I thought I would. It was relaxing with plenty of hidden objects with lists, just how I like them. Didn't have much back and forth. Not a lot of put this here or there. Not complicated.
This is the second in the series with Old Tower being the first. I liked the first one more but this is good. Had 18 hops.
