This game is beautiful, well designed, well written, and fun to play. At a time when there are few high caliber products coming out, especially in the HO game market where everything is so run of the mill, "Spirits of Mystery: Whisper of the Past," is a breath of fresh air.

It's been a long time since I've been impressed by development to detail and quality of design in a game. This developer stepped up to bring us a game that we can enjoy viewing and with crafting that made me want to see more. Honestly, if the story is lacking in context for some reason, and I hope not, I know the visual quality will be enough for me to enjoy it.
I'm going to purchase this game! Show less

Spirits of Mystery is back with game twelve of the series – Whisper of the Past. I had fairly much burned out on the series but decided to give this game a try, and although there are some mixed reviews on the game I actually think this game is better than several of the previous games. Yes, we have the same evil entities trying to make trouble for the Kingdoms but in many ways this is a much milder game that I could play instead of a game that was becoming quite violent in its storylines.
Before I go much further, I have to say that I think no other developer can beat the graphics and the artistic renderings of the characters than those that are created by AMAX. Along with the characters being mostly beautiful, they are so realistic. As a doll artist I am swept away by the characters created by this artistic team. When I first began playing HOPA games ERS/AMAX created the games that I loved the most, and their game created my passion for playing HOPAS. The sound track is good and I found that there was only one scene that had howling wolves. The soundtrack with the baying wolves is one from the Shadow Wolf series but developers do reuse the tools they have!
Our storyline finds Princess Airrin of the Fire Lion Kingdom in a fight to save her mother and aunt after they have been kidnapped by the Dark Reapers. With the help of the Oracle, Airrin will need all of her strength to overcome the Reapers and free her family from the unseen power that is controlling the Reapers.
In spite of a series that I thought was long past retirement, I found that I really liked this game. Whisper of the Past is a great improvement, IMHO, over some of the more recent games in the series and although we have the smoky cloaked Dark Reapers the tone of the game is not as dark as the past four games. I enjoyed the storyline and the gameplay, even the gimmicky Song of the Moon looking glass was still fun to use.
A disappointment for me is that the game did not have as many HOPS as I would like but the ones that were in the game were excellent. As is the current trend after gamers began to demand more puzzles, this game is buried in puzzles. Want to move forward – play a puzzle; need a tool – play a puzzle, and the list goes on, and on, and on. I think the reason so many games are now considered cookie cutters is that the puzzles replace the creativity of storyline and HOS. Puzzles cut into my enjoyment of a good storyline and quite frankly, I am becoming very tired of playing a HO game to find that they are really becoming puzzle games. I would prefer more HOS than puzzles and would like to see more of a balance. I do enjoy puzzles but when they become the game that is where I begin to lose my interest.
Although there is nothing really new, I still have enjoyed the game. The puzzles have been my least favorite part and even with skipping many of them I think the game is longer than the three chapters would indicate but I play games slowly so what make take me a long time to play isn't necessarily what it might take others to complete. For me the game was quite enjoyable and I recommend that you try the demo. I’m happy that I did and even happier that I purchased the full game. I have only deducted one star because the game had too many puzzles. I would like to see more HOS and less puzzles in HOPA games. That being said, I hope you will enjoy the game as much as I do. Happy gaming! Show less
I recommend this game!

I found this to be a basically enjoyable fantasy {I love fantasy hogs} game but again there were too many minis and very few hidden object scenes.
The colors, sounds jump map, character's, etc.. were pretty good but when I think I'm buying a HOG I would like for the number of minis to hogs to be close to equal, just sayin.

I'm recommending this for those of you that enjoy simple minis and few hogs. Gameplay is not difficult and is a nice interlude between grey-matter heavy more intense games.

Princesses will be Princesses but these three Royal heiresses didn't foresee the danger of disobeying Fathers warnings not to play where they decided to play. They soon discovered why father forbade them when Miranda's curiosity led to her disappearance into the evil abyss. That was 30 years ago, Lilith, the eldest is now the Queen and Princess Sylvia is now an Aunt, but they vowed an oath of secrecy that is now returning to haunt this Royal Family to their graves!
Personally, I didn't hate this game, it was exactly as I suspected, a take-it-or-leave-it kinda game. A just okay kinda game that has basically the same storyline, has the same black cloaked, floating, red-eyed, evil-doer spirit with the same anti-princess/revenge agenda as all games by Amax offer. I played the entire game which took me about 5.5 hours. I didn't skip any of the mini-games or conversation dialogs, nor did I skip through the cutscenes, and of course I wrote notes. In my opinion, even though there are only 3 Chapters (+Bonus Chapter in the CE version) they are quite lengthy chapters.
In the CE version, each scene has a slow Morphing Lion's Head, and some of the scenes have Collectible Spirit Cards that allow you to predict your future once the collection is complete. I did run into a glitch with one of the cards not being available in the 3rd chapter, inside the tree that you heal. The CE SG shows it being there, and the zoom zone was still accessible, but there was NO card, I even tried clicking everywhere just in case I just couldn't see it, but nothing worked!
Along with another Amax game, we are treated to another Gadget!... sigh. (Song of the Moon) and of course, the Gadget is a Magical Amulet! The Magical Amulet looks like a hand-held mirror basically, and it allows you to search the scene for 7 different Symbols to recharge it. Once recharged, the Magic Amulet will destroy Evil Blossoms that block the Princesses path. A non-magical Scythe or Sickle would have tackled the weeds just as easily and never needs to be recharged, but I'm sure they would require gloves, a new handle, oil to remove the rust and a whetstone to sharpen them, right? Besides, we wouldn't want Princess to break a nail!
There aren't a lot of Hidden Object Scenes in either the main or the CE bonus chapter, this is definitely a puzzle-heavy game. Because there is a Gadget involved that's basically a lens, you are required to find 7 Hidden Symbols located within the entire scene, using the Magic Amulet. The Amulet HOS is repeated 7 different times during the Main game. Most of the main Hidden Object Scenes have 2 different types in each one. There are Interactive Listed Item finds, Multiples of the Same Item finds, Silhouetted Shape finds, Pictured Item finds, Silhouetted Shape Recipe Ingredient finds, Keywords in Sentence finds, Pictured Combination finds (a bird + shackles = ____) and Placing Transparent Picture Swatches correctly into the Scene. Most of the HOS's (8) are smaller Zoom Zones where you are tasked with finding 4-7 Multiples of the same Objects such as 8 Roses or 7 Feathers. There are no Morphing Objects as far as collecting them, but a few of the HOS's had several Morphing Objects that had to be clicked on when it was in the correct form. There are no alternative Puzzle or Games available.
There are a ton of Mini-Games and smaller puzzles throughout this game, even the Plus-items require solving a puzzle of some sort. The CE Bonus Chapter is riddled with them as well. Some of the more complex puzzles are available in a Casual or Hard Mode of difficulty, but for the most part, they are solvable on the first attempt. Below are brief descriptions of some of the games you'll encounter within the Main Chapters:
1-Use the Amulet to find 7 hidden symbols in the scene. (used 7 x's)
2-Adjust the clock hands to represent all of the moon's phases.
3-Arrange the tokens according to the hints shown on the wall.
4-Rotate the disks to return animals to their correct slots.
5-Select junction boxes to flip puzzle sections & complete the images.
6-Place 3 fragments into each highlighted slot correctly.
7-Place the completed fragments in the scene correctly.
8-Click fragment sections to align with the objects in the scene.
9-Uncover matching prints that shuffle positions with each turn.
10-Choose partial symbols on a rotating ring to match the center symbol.
11-Use directional arrows to navigate 3 floors of a dark labyrinth by finding tools to overcome obstacles.
12-Drag rings to the bottom rung from largest to smallest in size.
13-Select partial symbols the create the center symbol when combined.
14-Click those partial symbols to the correct colors according to the riddles.
15-Play a Match 3 Game on a Dartboard style board to charge the staff.
The Collector's Edition version has 10 Wallpapers, 18 Concept Art pictures, 8 Screensavers, 9 Movie Video Cutscenes, 4 Music Soundtracks, 10 re-playable Hidden Object Scenes, 14 re-playable Mini-Games, 15 Achievements to Earn (some available in 3 categories) 26 Morphing Objects (Lion's Head) 15 Collectible Spirit Cards (predicts your future after completing collection) 3 Main Chapters (lengthy chapters) +Bonus Chapter (sequel) and a built-in Strategy Guide.

Then you have a magical thing that you wave around the scene to find magical symbols floating in the air, and that charges up the magical thing so you can use to it get rid of said magical poisonous flowers.
So you do that, but you can't rush out to save your sister from the black wraith reaper just yet. You still have to find some shaped keys to get the wolf statue to drop the door key, because doesn't everybody lock themselves inside the house and then lock up the key with yet more keys which you have to find before you can get the key to unlock the key to unlock the front door?
Then, you rush outside to see your sister sword fighting with the black wraith reaper. Where did she get the sword? I guess the reaper had an extra.
And another thing... in the opening cinematic, there are three little girls all about the same age and the one in the middle gets pulled away by some black smoke. Then it's 30 years later and you're the daughter of the one who got pulled away who is now the queen and you have to go rescue her, which is why you need to rescue your sister who is the other little girl who is also now all grown up.
Whaaaat???? So I a gave up after only nine minutes. Show less
