After either a facelift or a good long nap and an encounter with a razor, the Auguste Dupin I love is back. No more shaggy and worn around the edges Dupin in the game. Of course he still manages to act a bit bumbling as he directs me to do all of his running around, and it is rather impressive that the guy manages to look so fit with the lack of exercise he gets. At any rate Dupin is back in Dark Tales EAP’s Speaking with the Dead. As another reviewer said this is an excellent game and one that I’ve been waiting to see.
As is the case in all AMEX (formerly ERS) games the graphics are top of the line. The characters are created to perfection which has always been a major draw for me with any game from this developer. As great as the characters are however, the dialog is downright corny sometimes bordering on ridiculous.
The HOPS are excellent and one of the early ones in the game had me using the hint because the items were so well concealed. Of course there are far too many of the mini HOPS that I think are a bit lazy and an easy way out for us to find an item. I happen to love HOPS and that is true of the old school list type but I guess with gamers from all over the world playing these games, it is simply easier not to have to translate languages for the items to be found. As much as I loved the storyline and the HOPS, I can’t say the same for the puzzles. AMEX is one developer that still relies on the use of the click this or toggle that variety of puzzle and there were too many of those overly familiar ones in this game for my liking. I happened to skip almost all of them in this game and will go back to them one day when I feel that I have more of a tolerance for that model of puzzle. That being said, if I mostly ignore the puzzles this is an excellent game.
The storyline is excellent and does contain a few surprises that I didn’t expect. I always love it when I am playing a game and then something comes along that I hadn’t figured out earlier. When this happens it always makes the game so much more fun, at least for me.
As with most of the endless sequels here at BFG, I thought that Dark Tales EAP’s Speaking with the Dead would be a game I would skip but once I began playing I was hooked. I wasn’t even halfway through the demo before I decided that I wanted to play the full game and hit that buy button. Although I do think this is a wonderful game, please try the demo to see if you will enjoy this game as well. Happy gaming! Show less

This is the 8th Dark Tales I'v added to my collection and it is better than some but it seems like something is missing. Although I did enjoy seeing Dupin back to the one so many of us Fishies love it still felt like something was missing but I can't really put a finger on it.

It still has the same look that it's had in the past, but the voices were oddly done and the bonus chapter seemed like it was done by someone else. Though, I liked the bonus better. It just felt a little "phoned in". Not quite up to the usual but still an okay buy.
I don't recommend this game.

Trite, banal, boring! If I wrote nothing more about this game, those three words sum it up to a certainty —as they did for the last six games of this series that I reviewed.
Once more poor Edgar Allan Poe’s name and fame have been appropriated and used for what? For a poorly scripted, poorly plotted, poorly acted, trite, banal, and boring game. Yes, I used those three words again!

What do we have here but the same tired story we’ve had a hundred times before. A woman kidnapped by an evil entity —yeah, that’s new and exciting. The same old HO sequences. The same old mini-games.
And let’s not forget the same old graphics, same old dull background music.
Despite the rave reviews some others have given this game —I simply cannot understand why they have done so, and I’m convinced that they must have played a different game than this demo. Folks, please, it wouldn’t you hurt to write an honest review! I’m sure that Big Fish will continue to feed you beta games.
When I play a game, as when I read a book or watch a play, character development is a large part of my enjoying that particular media. In this game, as in others, such development is mostly absent. It is impossible to empathize with the flat, cartoonish characters who inhabit this game. I really don’t care what happens to them. Nor am I moved to any real effort to ‘rescue’ them from the predicaments which, more often than not, they become embroiled through their own ineptness.
Edgar Allan Poe was the father of the ‘horror’ genre, but the only horror here is the audacity of the game developer to associate his name with this yet again lame offering.
Don’t waste your download capacity or your time on yet another in a now long series of losers! Show less

I played the whole game and I really disliked most of the mini-games. It had too many fool with it puzzles. I did like Amax's relaxed puzzles and these aren't it. I don't like puzzles in my hops either. It needs more hops.
The story line was ok and then it wasn't. It's a good thing I got this game with a full punch card. So I didn't waste my money.
I don't recommend this game.

Completed CE Game approximately 5 hours

Speaking of the dead, this game is a perfect example of why the Dark Tales series has run its course, it's like speaking with the dead, they don't have a lot going on and neither does this game! Amax has obviously run out of ideas for a new storyline after 10 years. Yes, I understand that these stories are loosely based upon Edgar Allan Poe's original poems and stories, but these loose interpretations don't translate well as a game. The gameplay is monotonous, the tasks are painstakingly boring, the storyline drags and there are hundreds of uninteresting diary pages and notes to read, after a chapter or two, you just want to join the dead, it's gotta be more interesting because there's certainly nothing here to keep you on the edge of your seat. I've always said that it's difficult to tell the difference between characters from one game to the next because they all look the same, this time, they actually are the same characters!
There are 13 Hidden Object Scenes in the Main Chapters and 10 Zoom Zone Hops that are quite frankly boring and unappealing. The scenes lack clarity, color, and creativity. I found the first HOS to be ridiculous on all levels. There's a fire (because there's always a fire in every Amax Interactive game) and the Fire Extinguisher is not only located in an odd place, inside a locked cage but also secured to the cage with 3 more locks! The 3 Keys to unlock the fire extinguisher are bound with 3 separate Chains! (surely the fire has burned out of control by the time I finish this HOP?) Most of the HOP's are either Listed Item Finds or Interactive List Finds, but there are also a few Silhouetted Shape Finds, Keywords in Sentence Finds, Multiples of the Same Object Finds, Matching Pair Finds, Replace Items into the Scene Finds, and 10 Zoom Zone HO's where you are tasked with finding a handful of objects. The only one I found to be remotely interesting was finding 12 Keys and then use the correct key to unlock each of the decorated locks. It was only interesting because the locks and keys were colorful and intertwined with green thorny vines.
There are 29 actual Mini-Games, most of which are back-to-back There are mini-games within Hidden Object Puzzles, and even within complex Inventory Items. Most of the time I would be elated because I love the puzzles, however, there are just too many of my nemesis puzzles, where clicking on one will affect others, I like skill based puzzles, not puzzles that seem to have no rhyme or reason. I found myself wanting to skip puzzles the second I read that "one affects" others direction, and I usually love and anticipate the puzzles in most games! I was also disappointed that only a couple of the games had a Reset button to let you start over. Below are brief descriptions of some of the games I did find interesting during the entire game:
1-Fill your board with more water tokens than your opponent's fire tokens.
2-Arrange beads on each of the rings so they align within the grooves after clicking the start button.
3-Track the movement of the Green Card & select it after the cards shuffle.
4-Use directional arrows to set the Roman Numerals to 12 o'clock.
5-Select directional arrows to turn on all lamps, once lit they can't be unlit.
6-Place shaped puzzle pieces correctly.
7-Spot the difference between a Photo and a Sketched drawing.
8-Use + & - buttons to adjust the size & rotation buttons to align 4 partial images.
The CE Bonus Chapter is more creative than the entire Main Game. It rewinds the clock to take you back to the Courtroom during Dr. Brian's trial. You'll have to examine the evidence and decide a verdict. There are 8 Hidden Object Scenes and 10 Mini-Games and you'll finish finding 7 Morphing Silhouette Shadows and Complete the Rave Feather Collection with the final 7 Feathers remaining.
The Collector's Edition version has 9 Wallpapers, 7 Concept Art Pictures, 5 Screensavers, 4 Music Soundtracks, 10 Movie Video Cutscenes, 14 Re-playable Mini-Games, 14 Re-playable Hidden Object Scenes, 12 Achievements to Earn, 26 Collectible Raven Feathers, 26 Morphing Silhouettes, 5 Main Chapters +Bonus Chapter, and a Built-in Strategy Guide.

I used a coupon for this game and still felt ripped off. This was one of the worst BF games I've played in a long while. The graphics were OK but the story was a convoluted mess and I had to drag myself to finish it. By the time it was over, I no longer cared what happened or who did what. It seems poor Amax has completely forgotten how to make good games anymore.
