The word associations were sometimes obscure and required hints to complete the chapter. Too much dialogue, with only a partial skip option, when replaying the chapter for a 4-star rating. Show less

I don't think this game qualifies for a hidden object game, items aren't really hidden, but it is a different game with out of the box thinking. Some players won't like the fact that the story is given in bits and pieces, constantly interrupting game play, but it is a mysterious story in which you do want to learn more and more. I don't think this game qualifies for a hidden object game, items aren't really hidden, but it is a different game with out of the box thinking. Some players won't like the fact that the story is given in bits and pieces, constantly interrupting game play, but it is a mysterious story in which you do want to learn more and more. Strange things are happening to Jess now that she has turned 30 and she doesn't know how she ended up in a dark room with a strange and mysterious man who is having her recall all of her memories one tarot card at a time. Jess will give you 3 key words for each area to investigate such as sugar, day, and key. Then you search the room for items that connect such as sugar/pie D/day and key/chain. Some words go before the key word some after and there are boxes on either side with a specific amount to fill. You are allowed 9 mistakes and 6 hints per area before you have to start over. The mini games are good, I liked the crossword puzzle where you had to put zodiac names in the correct slots so that a correctly spelled word is achieved in the horizontal and lighted up slot. Enjoy! It combines a brain game with a hidden object game. The sequel is awesome, too. Take the time to watch the scenes between levels, because the story is actually quite entertaining.

This game is different from other games. The word association was such a nice change of pace from the regular "find the object". Some of the associations were slightly obscure, but that just made the game more challenging.

I really enjoyed the little video movies that told the unfolding story of Jess. The voice acting was nicely done, too. The only drawback would be the graphics. They are a bit outdated nowadays and the screen size is rather small (or least it was on my monitor).
I highly recommend this game! I know some may not like the style, so demo it first to see. Show less

The mixture of word puzzel and word combinations was fun. Challenging sometimes because I'm not a native english speaker. I had to replay most of the chapters to be able to get the highest star rating for each tarot card and spent a lot of time trying to decipher the ouija board and rune messages. The video secuences and the voice acting were very good, although at some parts, you could not understand the words because of echoing effects. All in all, a very fun, different, and interesting game to play. Show less

This is a review of 3 Cards to Midnight, for PC, which I completed on 03/25/2017 in Challenge Mode.
GAMEPLAY: The gameplay is pretty predictable, but I loved it. The way it worked was that in each Chapter, you had 3 Tarot cards to explore. Clicking on a card brought up an HO scene. For each scene there were 2-4 words. For each word, you had to find items that combined with the word. For example, if the word was Flash, and there was a light, you could click on the light to create “Flashlight”, and the word “Light” would appear to the right of the word Flash. There were boxes for each word, so you always knew how many words you had to find before the word and after the word. Camera, for example, could go before Flash. Once you found all the word-parts for a particular word, there was a cut scene. At the Challenge difficulty, you start each scene with 3 Hints. If you find a certain number of word parts, you get a fourth hint. After finding a specific word, a puzzle is activated. You can choose to play the puzzle anytime after it has been activated, but I always chose to do the puzzle last. The puzzles were not difficult, and all of them included both instructions on how to solve the puzzle and a Skip option. I don’t like skipping puzzles, and I did not have to skip any of the puzzles in this game, although I did occasionally refer to the online walkthrough. If you use up all the hints and click on too many wrong items, you restart the entire card. When you finish all three cards, and their respective puzzles, you move on to the next chapter. There are seven full chapters and a finale. The finale is a bit anti-climactic. You choose 3 cards, and then the scene plays out based on the cards you chose. There’s actually nothing to do after choosing the cards besides seeing how the end plays out.
CHALLENGE: There are three options to choose from at the start of the game: Easy, Challenge, and Gamer. There is no actual change in difficulty between Easy and Challenge other than that in Easy mode, you do not need to find all the words, but in Challenge mode you do. I don’t remember the description for Gamer mode, but I think there are fewer hints. I found that Challenge was just right for me. I did occasionally need hints, and I think I had to restart most of the cards. Sometimes the words didn’t make sense, and in one case, I misunderstood another review on this site and avoided clicking on a “right” item.
STORYLINE: The story is very compelling. Not only does the mystery grow more interesting and ominous, but the twists are executed in such a way that they are really twists. I didn’t expect any of the twists, and the plot kept my attention and interest all the way to the end.
AESTHETICS: This is a Noir-style game with Art Nouveau styling throughout. The Tarot cards were made specifically for this game and they were beautiful and appropriate. They matched the rest of the game while retaining the base imagery of the Tarot. This was masterfully done. The voice acting was also excellent. I did not really notice the music.
Final Assessment: I am very glad I bought this game. I really enjoyed the HO scenes and the puzzles, and I loved the storyline. I was also impressed with how the Tarot was incorporated.

Although this game is more like an interactive story, there is a lot for you to do to discover what's going on. And what a story it is! Although this game is more like an interactive story, there is a lot for you to do to discover what's going on. And what a story it is! Where the plot of many hidden object adventures is thin, predictable, and strays away to nothing at times, with horribly unsatisfying endings, this game has a strong story and characters that develop throughout the game. The voice acting is excellent and the music helps set the spooky mood each step of the way.
The graphics are very grainy and the working area of the screen, especially during cut scenes is rather small--never completely full screen. For that, I might have deducted one star, but this is such a great game, particularly appealing to old-school adventurers like me, or anyone who likes a good noir mystery, that I wanted to see it get a better rating.
This is not a casual game as it requires the player to put some thought into what must be found. Rather, it might appeal more to people looking for a little more intellectual challenge. Nothing here is horribly difficult, so don't be scared off. Give this one at least a free try and you might find yourself hooked from the get-go like I did.
There is a sequel (and I will be buying that one straight away) but this story has a very satisfying ending and stands on its own quite well. Show less
