This game has many good ideas but never quite makes it. The storyline with 3 siblings is great - each character is different and brings their own skills, personalities, issues and drawbacks. You play each one individually and then they join together to make your more familiar RPG team. The look is also the familiar retro RPG we know from Aveyond and others.
The monsters are varied and challenging...sometimes too challenging! If you do beat them, it is set up to be not rewarding enough - it will take you forever to earn any decent money. With the high grade equipment costing $1000s - highly frustrating!! (I should have read the Forum entries before I bought as some of these points are made by players there). This reduced the fun factor considerably for me as it became waaaaay too hard to get anywhere and complete quests and also extremely tedious - play, die, play, die badly, re-group, revive, play, win - and then get 30c - or nothing except EXP points! Some players say there is a "patch" to fix this issue but you need to download from the developer's website (Exodus Studios) but when I went looking, they were nowhere to be found. :(
I also "felt" that the character movement was awkward and "sticky" compared to playing similar games - I use a mouse and found characters had a tendency to go in jerky linear "blocks".
Okay the more I write the worse it's sounding. It really does have some good points but probably not enough to warrant buying. Such a pity...

Vastar starts off like a fairly average RPG. There aren't any side quests. On the other hand, the areas to explore are large and the enemies you face are not pushovers. For me the problems became obvious about 15 hours into the game.

First, equipment upgrades are ludicrously expensive. The problem is that you get very little money from your battles. That means that the only way to improve your abilities is to level up.
Which leads to the second big problem. The game is horribly paced. When I was ready to start confronting the big villain, my characters' levels were in the high 30s and I was getting killed fast. Since equipment upgrades weren't practical, refighting the same areas over and over to level up was the only solution. I spent the next 25 hours of game time tediously replaying the same area to get my characters up to level 60. It still wasn't enough. When you have to spend two thirds of your game time mindlessly replaying the same area, with no end in sight, the game quickly becomes boring and pointless. So I quit. Show less
