This seems like a cross between Uncharted Waters II for the SNES, and Tradewinds for PC. You get to battle pirates... at Match-3... Ok, that's a bit different, but it's fun. You can quest for glory, buy bigger, more powerful ships, attack other nations, smuggle stuff, or just be a trader.

I do wish there was more to do, and more consequences, however. Also, although there was a story in the beginning, and I'm sure it will end with one, there doesn't seem to be any story progression throughout the game at all. In fact, some details in gameplay are left out. The Victory Flags don't register as Pirate flags, which don't seem to exist, but are needed for a quest, and I don't have a clue what your 'land' is for, nor do I know where to find it, if I did.
I think it's well worth the buy, if you like this sort of game. Show less

In order to enjoy this unusual game you will need to be open minded, it's not going to be the best game you ever played, but it is different and quite unique. You sail your ship around the open seas, stopping at different ports along the way to buy and sell goods such as cotton, sugar, clothing, iron, silver and food. There will be ships from England, France and Spain sailing those seas as well. you can choose to battle them but you will become their enemy and they won't allow you to visit their ports to buy or sell goods unless you receive a pardon or bribe them with gold. Pirate ships are a different story, you want to attack them and then you're in for a treat. The pirate ship is displayed next to your ship and you battle for points as you make match 3's. If you make more that 3 matches you get an extra turn. There are extra cannons, salvo to double the damage to the pirate ship, ship repairs, special skills plundered gold and more as you watch the ships battle it out. If you lose the battle, you lose half of your gold and half of your cargo so choose the matches wisely. Every time you progress to a new level you can choose one of three bonuses such as land, gold or amnesty. I must admit that I zoomed around the sea searching for the elusive pirate ships because I had so much fun watching the ships battle it out and it takes strategy to win the match 3 battles too, enjoy! I'll be the first to admit, the instructions for this game are pathetic. It's a relatively complex hunt/fight/buy/sell type of game, and if you've never played anything like it before I can only imagine that what you're presented with here would just look like a big mess of confusion.

I'll be the first to admit, the instructions for this game are pathetic. It's a relatively complex hunt/fight/buy/sell type of game, and if you've never played anything like it before I can only imagine that what you're presented with here would just look like a big mess of confusion.
That said, if you have played games like this before (wish I could remember names, it's been years, but there's others in this genre), you should begin to feel right at home with this one pretty quickly.
Basically there's three parts to Loot Hunter, I'll describe them and review them in parts - hopefully this will help other players make better sense of the game.
* 1. Trading: You purchase goods from one place, and sell them elsewhere - hopefully for a profit. Unfortunately there's no way I can see to tell if you're making profit on sales or not unless you are ready to start keeping spreadsheets.
This is the weakest part of the game, in my opinion, because I really don't want to have to keep paper records while I'm playing a casual game.
* 2. Quests: You stop at an island and someone gives you a quest. Sometimes they'll also give you goods to complete the quest and all you have to do is take the goods from Point A to Point B, then return to Point A for payment. This is made easy because you're able to click on "Ship", then "Quests" and then click on the quest and it will draw a line on the map to the spot you need to go to complete the quest.
This is well-designed and a fun part of the game, if only they would tell you how to do it in a tutorial rather than having to flounder around figuring it out yourself.
* 3. Battle! Using a modified match-3 environment, you swap tiles to do damage to the other ship, give your ship better powers, or heal your ship. The trick here isn't speed, it's more of a chess game because if you're able to make matches of 4 or more, the other guy doesn't get a turn. With some luck and strategy, you can win against much larger opponents.
Again, this part of the game could have really benefited from a good tutorial, because it requires lots of strategy. The mechanics of making a match are even a little weird, you select one tile by clicking on it, then select where you want it to go by clicking on the new spot. It's a bit clunky but keeps mistakes from happening as easy as it can in a regular m-3 setup. Also, there are no added points from drop matches (tiles dropping into place and making more matches), the only match you get is the one you make.
----
Other things you need to know but won't be told:
Join a guild right away - Merchant seemed to make the most sense because then you can trade with anyone, that might not be the case though if I spent more time on the game and learned more strategy.
Ship upgrades - I found the island for ship upgrades early in my hour trial, but then promptly forgot where it was - it's on Gray Landing. Upgrade your ship as soon as possible so you can go up against larger ships and get better payoffs.
Fight only Pirate ships at first - fighting ships from other countries means you're at war with that country and can't trade at their ports. Not something you want to do early in the game.
You can run away from a fight without losing anything, but only if you choose not to fight to begin with. Once you've agreed to fight, the only way out is to finish. Losing doesn't mean you have to start over, but you do lose cargo and gold.
-------
To be honest, I'm thrilled to see a game that breaks the current mold of cookie-cutter Hidden-Object adventures and the occasional Time Management offering, so that probably has something to do with my positive review. That said, if you're able to use your hour to test this game and just play around to see if it could be something that interests you in spite of a lack of tutorial, then you might be happy you did. It's a definite buy for me, in spite of the lack of tutorial and other issues I mentioned. Show less

The premise is the same, explore, buy and sell goods, fulfil quests and challenges, battle pirates and ships from other countries. Where fighting can be quite complex in other similar games, here it is all done via a battle M3 and I love battle M3s! Very easy to learn the strategy, as you get a description of the various icons when hovering the mouse over them.
The map looks quite large - you need to hold the mouse button down and drag to expand it. The ship icon at the bottom of the screen shows your cargo, list of quests, challenges, and your level. At the end of the demo, I was still a beggar on level 1, with quite a funny description. I therefore envisage many hours of play to climb that ladder. Show less

So, I read the game description and looked at the pictures beneath it and saw a match 3 game on the last one. So, fool that I am, I'm thinking "great! I love match 3 games." A match 3 game this is not ... well .... not entirely.

Apparently, you have a ship. You can choose to be a pirate, a merchant or something else ... probably a fool, like me. Somehow, I "chose" to become a ship's captain. Not my choice, I'm sure, because I would have picked merchant for sure. What do I know of sailing the 7 seas and fighting? NOTHING! NADA! ZIP! And, boy, did I get into trouble fast.
I have no clue how to play this game. I know there are quests. I know everyone wants to sell you something for 3.000 gold coins at every turn. I know you should NEVER fight a pirate ship. 45 minutes of the demo and that's all I learned.
I did come away with some questions though. Well, more than are obvious from above. What exactly IS the most unbelievable pirate story????? There was none mentioned while I was playing so the game's name is a bit misleading. Why isn't there an in-depth tutorial or at least a "help" section? How do you get all those amazing points to fight against other ships? Why doesn't the "fight" match 3 game work like regular match 3 games? See? Too many questions. Made me feel like the idiot I was for trying to play this game. And I LOVE pirates. Sigh.
I'll recommend it although I quickly uninstalled it from my Game Manager after 45 minutes of torture. I think there are probably oodles and oodles of people out there who can figure it out and enjoy it as well. As for me? I had to walk the plank on this one and am shark food. LOL
Happy Gaming! Show less

If you encounter another ship on your travels, you can decide to fight or run away. Sometimes, you won't have a choice. You fight by playing a basic match 3 game every time. It can get quite strategic.
You build up your money as you fight ships, complete quests and do other tasks, and have the option to upgrade your ship, buy land and gain XP.
After the initial excitement of exploration, I got bored fairly quickly. It gets quite repetitive. I know I haven't covered all the bases and explored all the areas, fought all the ships and done all the quests, but it does get monotonous after a while. I love that it doesn't railroad you down any linear path of play, so it's very liberating in that sense but I do like more linear game play. It's one of those comforting games, where you dip in and dip out, and play over several weeks or even months. There doesn't seem to be an ending but if you persevere, I can imagine you can get a lot of loot for your efforts and a fine fighting ship that is not easy to beat.

Lovely. No instructions to speak of, every time I clicked on something I was zipping around the board without a clue of what I was doing. Couldn't be bothered to try and figure it out, if the devs couldn't be bothered to leave decent direction, I can't be bothered to buy it. Another of those games with decent graphics but that's about all. Sorry, not for me.
