An ole college buddy and his wife invite you to Brownville with the promise of a job. Things aren't right and almost immediately you are warned to leave by a card wielding woman who warns that Brownville isn't safe! You need a job so you meet up at a house of cards and when the boss asks you to play a game of cards, how can you refuse? I'm going to give this game kudos for out of the box thinking. Magic surrounds those cards and you soon realize the stakes are high, you and your friends must all survive in a strange, unfamiliar world, or you will all die! You need to find magic cards and activate them in order to progress to the next deadly level and hopefully win the game. You will find and name a cute purple rabbit/puppy that can help you with some out of reach inventory items. The HOS are very interactive list finds with most of the interactions requiring more than one step. Most of the mini games are new, the one I liked the best was using directional arrows to guide a frog into lily pads with quite a difficult pattern, this one took me a few tries. Again, kudos to the developer, enjoy! Show less

BASED ON DEMO
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
This one gets 5 stars just for the story, because it is something completely new and different, and reflects a truly active imagination. But full marks are justified for other reasons as well.
SIGHTS & SOUNDS
The graphics are high class, fantasy-styled, a little cartoonish, and perhaps a little too water-colour for me, but definitely beautiful and easy on the eye. The cut scenes are marvellous, especially once you are into the game proper.
The voiceovers are good, spoiled a bit by an attempt at lip synch that does come off. I still think it’s better not to try unless you can do it right. The music is excellent, pleasant with a sometimes Aztec sound to it. The game also has Aztec imagery throughout, but the interface leans towards dreamcatchers.
WHAT’S HAPPENING?
Your friend invites you to join him and his wife in the town they have settled in, where there is plenty of work and opportunities for a young man like yourself. Turns out he is not doing you a favour, but I am not sure he knew that when he sent the invite. Simon, the new ‘big man around town’ who is offering these opportunities asks you to play a game of cards with him before you’ve even washed the dust off the road down your throat.
That is where the story really begins. You find yourself trapped in a magical world of the cards, and the only way to escape is to survive the game. But Simon has been ‘turned’ by the game, and he no longer plays fair. It is almost impossible to hope to survive. Every object in the game can and usually is turned against you. Still, if you ‘play your (magical) cards right)’ *groan*, you might make it.
GAMEPLAY
Whilst you will find HOPs and other puzzles and mini-games which are fairly standard, there are different types of gameplay to match the different story. You acquire magic cards that can perform certain spells, such as an ice card. To move up levels in the game, you must also find teleportation cards. All cards must be activated by a particular process.
For the rest, the HOPs have the usual number of interactive items to be found, but some of the interactions are much more involved. The puzzles and games are not overly difficult, and other game mechanics are the expected. You have a journal, an interactive map that jumps (within that world), and a helper. Yes, I’m sorry, the magical animal is indeed cute, in a wonky sort of way, and climbs and digs. It redeems itself, however, by also being very funny. I love the video where it slides down the waterslide, and tumbles down to where you are waiting.
CE BLING!
There are collectibles. There are 30 plain looking jigsaw puzzle pieces and seem to relate to the “secret game” in the extra content. There are also achievements, displayed in a casino-style environment. The SG is well written. There are replayable mini-games, the Secret Game (which looks like a jigsaw), and the usual gallery items. 9 wallpapers, 14 concept art drawings and sketches (very good in their own right), 7 music tracks, videos. And of course the bonus chapter.
VERDICT
An excellent game, in which I am very happy to see a totally new story for the first time in... well, forever!

There are interactive parts to the HOs and the mini puzzles are charming. There is a jumping map that lets you know where the action is and you have a helper in the form of a mutated rabbit/kangaroo/monkey thing with very bad teeth....quite ugly actually...but I get tired of cute.
The game flows nicely along as you try to catch up with your friends who are also trapped in a very weird magic card game. I found the play enticing and am eager to carry on to the volcano!
There are 30 puzzle pieces to find and as I only played the demo, I am just assuming that they will be useful at the end.
Overall...really good!

You are unemployed, so you travel to Brownsville to meet your friend Ben and his wife, who appear to work for Simon, who owns the town's garment factory and club. Simon convinces you to play cards with him, and oops -- you wind up in some strange game world, the World of Fire. Simon appears and tells you to find the Teleporter Card to advance to the next level, and if you lose you will stay in the game forever.
You meet Anna, who tells you Ben and his wife are also in the game, and if any of you die, you all lose! You have six power cards, and you convert the Ice Power Card to help you out in the Fire World. A bit convoluted, but the graphics are so beautiful and the premise is interesting and different. You eventually find a Teleportation Card, but before you can charge it up, the demo ends!
There are 4 modes - including custom- and I played on Casual and still used the Hint Button frequently, even in the HOS. The artwork style allows the developers to easily hide familiar objects by drawing them in a stylized mode. The mini-games are also hard - or maybe I didn't have enough patience - but I skipped most of them to move along in the demo.
You get a pet creature, who can climb and fetch things you can't reach. I used the map extensively to help me find out where to go next. It is well-marked and interactive. You also have 30 puzzle pieces to collect, which opens up a secret puzzle at the end. The extras include a bonus chapter, strategy guide, video, art, wallpaper, and the mini-games. The demo ended just as I was about to charge my card to teleport to Floating Island World! Now I have to buy it. Show less

The scenery is stunning, your helpful pet adorable, and the story line is so different from the usual. A deadly card game sends you into other worlds where you are not expected to survive. The creatures in these lands are sometimes helpful and sometimes not, but always entertaining. You try to find magical cards that will transport you to another world. Each world is different.
Some people may find the puzzles on the easy side, and this may make it not the longest game you've ever played (or perhaps I enjoyed it so much I was just greedy for more) . Nice bonus chapter. Map to make movement between areas easier, with designated areas needing attention color coded. Show less

It seems like times have been rough lately in the big city and you find yourself without a job and no future prospects so when you receive an invitation from your college buddy Ben and his wife Louise to join them in Brownville, Louisiana for a job with Ben’s boss, you jump at the chance. It is not long before you realize that this might have been one of the worst decisions of your life and that things in Brownville are not what they seem. You find yourself trapped in a game with Ben’s boss, Simon, who is anything but a generous benefactor. Will you be able to survive Simon’s dangerous game and save Ben and Louise in the process? Enter a game within a game and travel to beautiful worlds as you attempt to defeat Simon.
The graphics are excellent, crisp and beautiful. The only fault I have with the graphics is that the characters seem cartoonish or reminiscent of Claymation figures and seem to lack personality, but aside from that the rest of the artwork is wonderful. The sound package is very good including lip-synced voiceovers, excellent music and environmental sounds.
You have a journal that contains notes to help you as you progress on your adventure. The interactive transporter map indicates where you have tasks to accomplish is located on the lower left of your screen along with your journal
The HOS I encountered during the demo are all the interactive list type and I did not find an option to skip the HOS if I didn’t want to wade through the list of items. Still, the HOS were full of beautiful artwork and I didn’t mind looking through all of the items to find what I needed. Although the puzzles were more of the same type that we generally encounter in HOPA games, they were still fun and some were a bit more challenging than others.
Throughout the game you will look for 30 puzzle pieces that presumably will be used to complete a puzzle in the bonus section. In addition to the collectible puzzle pieces the remainder of the CE content is standard fare.
Overall, this is a solid five-star game and one that the developers can be very pleased with presenting. I enjoyed the story and the gameplay so I will definitely purchase the CE version of the game. It is great to start off the year with a different type of storyline that holds my attention so when the demo ended; I wanted to continue playing, which means a trip to the BFG store for me. As always, I recommend that you try the demo to see if this is a game you will enjoy. Happy New Year everyone, enjoy this great game to start off 2014 with a BLAM!! Show less

It is a game within a game and on the Jumanji Model, like Surface Game of Gods for another example... perhaps future game within games makers will find other ways to present and frame the situation of being within a game?
two possible reasons occcur to me as to why we, many of us,like the form of a game within a game.
1. It represents going down to a deeper level-- immersion, through the game we are playing, in something beyond the immediate surface of play... perhaps down towards the barely conscious dreams and memories we harbor...
2.Do we have a sense that we are ourselves beings with another life ,maybe not prior in time but prior in depth, beyond that of the day to day world we see? That we could somehow find a stairway or a door or a portal to a world of which this is just a shadow?
Whether these senses accord with reality or are just some will feel human dreams is another question... for my part and speaking more lightly ,in a Hudson Valley Winter, I am looking for and believing in a Door to Summer.
Anyway a very fine game...

A NEW storyline! Good twists and turns. Fun to figure out what to do. The hints and map were excellent tools for me. I enjoyed the graphics and music, though at times it was a bit too loud when you had to listen to certain puzzles.
The comic relief of the magical animal was great as well.
