Nothing worse than that feeling of being used by your boss, except being used by your boss so he can dominate other worlds! Margaret wrote her brother to share some exciting news about a groundbreaking invention that would change the world! Margaret had been working on this invention for quite some time, and Dr. Samuel Thompson was kind enough to allow Margaret to stay at his villa on the rivers edge. Your arrival to the villa was a huge surprise for Dr. Thompson, he certainly had not planned on a family member spoiling his evil plans! Turns out the good Doctor isn't so good after all, he has invented a soul separation machine to extract 4 components from Margaret's soul, love, logic, loyalty and creativity. Her soul has been distributed to other worlds through the very portals that Margaret had been so eager to show you! Now you must enter these portals to recover your sisters soul before the mad doctor destroys those worlds by depleting their magical ether energy!
One of the biggest reasons I love this game is because of the abundance of mini games ranging from simple to complex, every location is chock full of em so if you don't like tinkering with locks and gadgets, steer clear. Some of the mini games include, repeating a color coded sequence, arranging the sequence of events such as seeds, sprout, plant and then fruit, swapping fangs to the correct position and creating 4 different pictures by flipping levers to change each section of the picture. Some of the inventory items have + sign indicators which indicate that further action is required before using that item, usually involving a small puzzle to put the pieces together. Margaret has invented a mechanical Harlequin doll capable of fixing items that are broken, this feature made no sense to me. This is supposed to be a game about two brilliant scientists who are capable of inventing spectacular devices, a game that is based upon science not magic, which is how the doll fixes things ala kazaam poof!??This game also features a mechanical Dossier, which is basically a journal that serves little purpose other than to look up information you forgot about or may have missed. The Hidden Object Scenes are very interactive list finds for example, you have to find a candle to place on a burner, find matches to light the candle, find a frying pan to place on the lit burner and finally find an egg to crack onto the frying pan for a fried egg! There is an alternate jigsaw puzzle if you're not a fan of HOS, in my opinion the jigsaw puzzles are way too easy because the picture is shown in the background and the puzzle pieces are clearly outlined on the background, it's almost impossible not to know exactly where each piece goes.
The Collectors Edition has a lot of extra goodies however many of the features aren't available in the demo version. There is a built in Strategy Guide, Concept Art, Music, Wallpapers, re-playable puzzles and free search games, 26 Achievements, a Bonus Chapter where you go head to head with the evil doctor, a Museum (full version only) and a Boudoir (full version only) to dress up that magic wand waver Harlequin doll. Either edition is sure to please the puzzle geek adventurer in everyone, enjoy! Show less

Margret, a kind, pure of heart soul has had her soul taken and broken into several other worlds by her boss, a scientist. Why other reviewers call him "mad" is beyond me. Perhaps he's overly zealous or overly obsessed with his latest invention. But, that doesn't make him "mad". The hero of the story is her brother, who not only has to restore her soul from these other worlds but save the worlds as well. A story within a story. Plus, there's this whole damsel in distress thing going on. Yeah, I'm a romantic at heart.
The graphics come across as a little too bright gold and orange for me but I thoroughly enjoyed the CE demo I purchased it then and there. Can't speak much of the sound, music, etc. as my puppy (now an amazing 6 months old) was napping by the computer).
There are 4 modes of play including "custom". You get the usual diary/journal that has a special section for each character in the story. A transportable map that shows not just one objective area but several at a time - love that. Your sister leaves you her "assistant" in the form of a Harlequin she's invented. She fixes things. She's not a pet, is kept in the inventory and was only used twice in the demo.
I repeat .... this is NOT a "pet".
There are several unique things about the game as well. For instance, periodically, there is this optometrist looking contraption that shows up and seems to take a picture. It's not something you actively do yourself. Also, as you enter the portal for each world there is, apparently, a "power" you accrue that is denoted in one of 4 circles located around the hint button. The first being "levitation" so you can to things too high to reach.
So, those are the mechanics of the game. Get it? Mechanics? Mechanical things? Oh, sigh, never mind.
Now, the guts of the demo. It was fun, enjoyable, an old story told in modern times. I was mesmerized, intrigued and wanted to know more at the end of the demo. How was the hero to save his sister? How was he to save each and every world? If he saves that part of his sister's soul entrapped in the world, doesn't he then destroy the world? How did the scientist rig that up? Guess all the answers are in the game.
I hope everyone will take the time to at least try the demo. I enjoyed it an I think you will too. Join me in losing yourself in this fantasy.
Enjoy! Show less

The devs have a really good imagination. It's kind of a mix of sci-fi and fantasy, but the devs made it work. It has a lot of mini games, but most of them are fun and not too hard, which I like. The mini games are different and quite original. I actually enjoyed most of them and I usually don't care much for them. If you can get past the silly story, it's a fun and enjoyable game. Graphics are good and quite colorful. Not like all those games with evil and dark themes with the graphics to match. I can't comment on the music since I play with the music off and the rest of the sound effects off or very low. Good thing there is an interactive map since there is a lot of moving around from place to place. However, sometimes there is no hint of where to go when the work is in one world and you're in another. No biggie. It's a fairly long game too, so well worth the money. Show less

BASED ON COMPLETED SE
I bought this game months ago, but then ran in to some problems, so I gave up. Not being one to leave things unfinished, I restarted this game, and what I got was a great adventure.
The story started off really well. It had an exciting concept and was executed nicely. The game is straight in to the action from the get go, with exciting events happening at crucial times to keep me hooked. From there, the story was quite slow progressing, but I would get excited again with a great cutscene every once in a while. I absolutely loved about the story was the encounters with the villain. They were great fun and quite exciting. The story continued well throughout the demo, so I decided to continue.
From there, unfortunately, the story dropped off. While there continued to be exciting encounters with the villain, what the story lacked was the shock factor. There were no exciting twists, no unrevealed secrets that created suspense... nothing. Everything coasted along the way I expected it to, so after the demo, the story wasn't very exciting. The thing that kept me going was the great characters. I loved how the developers put a different personality in to every single one and how each dialogue reflected that. I also found the dialogue to be extremely well written. That was definitely the best part of the story, because there was a severe lack of events.
Even with the lack of excitement, the ending was still quite good. It still lacked in excitement, but was conclusive and had no need for the bonus chapter.
Overall, the story was okay. But for their next game, I would like to see this developer add suspense or plot twists... something to make the story interesting.
The gameplay was much better than the story and was the main reason I purchased. I thought the HOS were good. They were laid-back and fun to play, and were just the right length. There were a good number of them, too. All up in the main game, there were 13 HOS. Even though they were enjoyable, I would have preferred them more if there had been a variety. All the HOS in the game were extra-step junkpile and, while fun, even that gets boring after a while. I would have liked to see some silhouette scenes.
My biggest problem with this game was the puzzles. I did not really enjoy them at all. Not only were they basic, and super easy, but there were just WAY too many of them! They were everywhere... the game just seemed to be puzzle after puzzle, and it was infuriating. Just to prove my point, twice in the game, there was an instance where there was three puzzles IN A ROW! ONE AFTER THE OTHER! That is absolutely ridiculous. All up, there were a mind-numbing 40 PUZZLES in the game. I wouldn't have minded if they were fun or unique, but instead they were just the same old bore I see time and time again. There is a huge need for improvement here.
Because there were so many puzzles, the adventure component was extremely minimal. What there was was quite fun, even if it was extremely basic. I quite enjoyed going through the game. Because of its basic design, the gameplay is also extremely easy, which will annoy seasoned HOPA players. However, I also feel that if the game had been harder, I wouldn't have been able to enjoy it as much. But I would have definitely liked to see less puzzles and more of the adventure component.
One thing the game did quite well on was additional features. There were three in this game: + objects, powers, and the harlequin, all of which I loved. The + objects were executed well, because there wasn't too many of them, and they required more than one object to complete. However, what I found annoying about them was that there was no indication of when they could be used. I like to have this there for enjoyment reasons. I hope the developers put it in their next game.
Another feature was the powers... and I absolutely LOVED them! They made the game so much more fun and honestly made me overlook the lack of a story. Upon entering each new world, one of the inhabitants gives you a power which will help you on in the game. There are 4 powers in the game and each one is used a lot. However, once you don't have anything to do in a world, the power you got there is rarely used again. I would have liked to see all powers used throughout the game.
The other feature was the harlequin, which was fantastic and very fun to use. It resided in the inventory, so didn't get in the way of the game. It was used quite often, its main purpose being to fix things. I found it made the game a lot more fun.
The graphics were good, but definitely not the best I've seen. The worlds are very imaginative and character designs are fantastic. The scenes have nice detail, but I felt the graphics were a tad outdated. The characters also don't have lip-synch, which was annoying.
The voice-overs were quite impressive. The voice artists have done a fantastic job on them. They were acted extremely well and added drama to the dialogue.
FEATURES
4 modes of difficulty: Casual, Advanced, Hard and Custom. Differences are standard. I played Advanced. I loved how it had no sparkles or map indicators!
Hint/Skip- both recharged at a decent speed for advanced. Hint was helpful outside HOS and sometimes acted as a teleporter.
Dossier- Kind of a replacement for the diary. Lists notes, characters and objects. However, it did not list important events, which was annoying.
Map- The map was interactive and quite helpful. It did its job on each difficulty.
+ Objects- Weren't too many, but enough to make it a feature. Each required more than one object to complete, which was good. I wish there was an indication though.
Harlequin- Extremely fun to use. Used quite often.
Powers- There were 4 in the game- one for each world- and each was extremely fun to use and raised my enjoyment level tremendously. However, once I left the world, the other powers were used rarely.
WHAT DO I MISS OUT ON IF I BUY THE SE?
Bonus Chapter- absolutely not needed. Game is 100% conclusive.
Built-in Strategy Guide- I managed just fine wihout it. Doesn't show HOS solutions.
Achievements
Boudoir- from memory, there were collectibles in the game. They are stored here.
Museum- I'm unsure what this is.
Wallpapers
Concept Art
Soundtrack
Replay HOS & Puzzles
WHICH IS THE BETTER BUY?
I got the SE. I was extremely happy with it. There were not many features in the CE, nor were any interesting. I think the SE is fine on its own and advise this is the one you get.
ON THE GAME LENGTH
The game was about 3.5 hours for me, which is a great length.
WOULD I PLAY THIS GAME AGAIN?
Absolutely. Even with the lack of story, it was quite entertaining.
While this game was far from perfect, it was quite entertaining, and has made me interested in future works from this developer. However, I still think there is tremendous room for improvement. I give this game a well-deserved four stars. Show less

I found this game quite easy to play. There's a little back & forth, but not much,& you never play the same HO twice. that's a big plus for me. 4) The best part: This also has an alternate game if you don't want to go thru the HO's. You can switch to a jigsaw puzzle instead. Warning: The puzzles are very simple. So if you're looking for a challenge, these aren't it! I like having those alternate games so that you can play the game again, & still have a different angle to play. As it stands, I'd say I really enjoyed this one. As I said, not terrifically difficult, but a pleasant way to pass the afternoon. I played this game in about 2 1/2 hours straight, so it's not a long, drawn out game. I would definitely recommend this one. Show less
