This is another excellent game in the Danse Macabre series. This game centers around the murder of the star dancer at the Moulin Rouge in Paris. You play a female detective hired by the famous artist Toulouse LauTrec to find out who murdered Sophie. The janitor is arrested for the crime. There is another dancer who appears to have been a friend of the victim, although they had grown apart because of jealousy. Other potential suspects include a stage hand and a rich patron. Another character dressed in a cloak and wearing a mask appears at the various locations with no explanation.
The graphics are excellent; very realistic and appropriately colored. The accents in the voiceovers are right on and the mouth movements are done extremely well.
I played the casual mode which included objectives and active locations in the map, which allows you to skip to any given location. The HOS were not hard, but were varied and non-repetitive. I had no trouble with the mini-games and did not need hints for either the HOS or the puzzles/games. I did use the hint for help in figuring out what to do in some of the scenes, as moving the cursor over the scene didn't always provide enough information. The hint button worked well.
I played with the music, because I wanted to give the game a fair review, and I found it appropriate to the game. But music and sounds always start to annoy me after a short time so during any future play, I will turn it off.
I have already purchased the CE of this game as that is what I usually do as I prefer the CE of any game. But if you don't want to spend the money for the CE, this game is excellent in the SE. Show less

The release order for this series is :
1- The Last Adagio
2- Crimson Cabaret
3- Deadly Deception
This game has it all. A nice story, beautiful graphics, good voiceovers, just like the other two games in the series. I wish other people who liked this game would rate it so it can get the rating it deserves. It sure deserves a much higher rating than 3.3.
I recommend this game!

I really liked this game! It was fun, long enough, and just plain exciting. Although it is kind of like the other Danse game, it was really good fun in its own right.
The graphics were very good and the sound excellent as were the voice overs. Hidden objects were clean and the scenes very well done.
So far as the level of challenge. It was a rather tough game. As I said, the hidden objects were clear. I didn't say they weren't hidden well. I have to admit I used the hint button more on this game than usual. The mini games, eh, who wants to play those things anyway.. LOL I honestly could not figure out some of them and some were way to complicated and overwhelming for a dummy like me. I don't like them from the git go, so that handy dandy little skip button became my best friend. The hidden objects and minis are well divided so you can have the best of both worlds. You have an interactive map to help you travel and see where you need to do something. Love that feature. I used the crime board more on this than I normally do the journals. It's there I think more for information than anything else.
The story was easy to follow with characters to whom I could relate. I figured out who dun it before the end, but they kept throwing enough curves, I wasn't sure until the unmasking at the end. It follows a logical progression which is missing in so many storylines. I did get lost a couple of times, but that's to be expected I suppose.
All in all this is a winner for me. I keep trying to find a negative about this, but for the life of me I can't, which isn't like me at all. I suggest you play the demo and of course make up your own mind, but I can't wait to play it again. I do believe you will enjoy this as much as I did.
Now, on with the show .. Play it! Show less

The only let-down with this game is the same as most HOs: the ridiculous places you find some things. A bottle of milk in someone's suitcase who was going to a cabaret show? Could the developers not have a staffroom with a small fridge or coldbox? It's the random placement of helpful objects that let down a lot of HOs (not just this specifically though it is one of the guilty ones). Show less

I've now played both the CE and SE demos of this game and still love it as much as the first time I played it. Does that even make any sense?????
So many questions, and so far, no answers. Your character is Madam Roche and you have been hired by the renowned and talented artist, Lautrec, to find out the truth behind Sophie's murder. The popular, beautiful and talented Star of the Moulin Rouge, She was murdered. And, by her death, secrets long buried are now exposed. But, what are those secrets? And who can they harm? And how?
I was very impressed with this game. The graphics were amazing, the music beautiful and the voice overs were in perfect sync with .... lip syncing.
There are 4 difficulty modes (casual, challenging, expert and, yes, CUSTOM). Be sure to check each item in the "Custom" setting as there may be items you want to "uncheck". Objectives pop up in a box telling you what your next objective is and when an objective has been achieved. There is an Achievements (25) button near your Inventory. Plus items will be in your inventory a LOT.
The optional "tutorial" was STILL annoying to me. Usually, after reading whatever instruction it gives you, you can click the "x" button or anywhere outside the instructions and it will go away. Not so here. Until you perform THAT instruction, it will stay like an annoying little flying insect around your head (maybe not the best analogy.
Eventually, you will find a "journal". However, when you hover your mouse over it, it's titled an "Evidence Board". Blooper? Upon opening this "journal", you will see pictures of interested parties of the case. Click on the picture and see a dossier of that person. As you play the game, an Exclamation Point (!) will appear on it, Open it. Another (!) will appear on 1 or more of the pictures. Click on the picture and move the arrows on the right side up or down to see what new "evidence" has been found. There is also an "Objectives" and "Task" tab at the top.
Also eventually, you will receive a map. There are "Task" and "Objectives" tabs at the top. Task and Objectives are indicated on the map using very tiny icons. Truthfully, so small I almost missed them completely. However, if you follow the game, you'll know where you need to go. You will also receive, during the game, location cards to give the driver of your carriage. There is no legend for "this is where you need to be", etc.
The HOGs (hidden object games were vary interactive and there are a variety of ways to play. In the list items type, there is an alternative match 3 game you can play. Very easy. And, sometimes there are mini games IN the HOGs. Way cool!
As for the mini games. I found there were more available than HOGs. At least in the demo. Fun, some new things we've not seen before. Some require patience (a virtue) and perseverance. I believe I skipped one to get back to the game play but WHEN I own the game I will figure THAT one out - guar-an-teed!
Who murdered Sophie and why? Why don't the Police believe it was murder? There was poison near the body and on one of the roses at the crime scene. What does this signify? Why is Lautrec so interested in Sophie's death? Yes, they were close friends but his interest is ...... almost ..... obsessive? And what happened to the close friendship between Sophie and Odette? Does Odette believe the Janitor murdered Sophie? Who is behind the mask character always showing up - everywhere you go? Man or female? Friend or foe? So many, many questions and more questions and suspects come up during the game. But, WHAT really happened? All will be answered when you play this amazing adventure and mystery game.
Enjoy! Show less

I enjoyed the forensic kit that we use in the game. It was something that had me feeling like a true detective. The visuals/locations were lovely, and the sound/voice acting was great. The level of challenge? It wasn't too difficult. The fun factor? I LOVE THIS GAME. I had a lot of fun playing it, and would love to go back and play through it again.
Now, after a certain point, I started thinking, "Maybe this suspect is the killer?" And then the game started to try and shift the "killer" title to another character. I was happy that I was right, in the end.
I will complain that the inspector (I think that was his "title") at the start was foolish. You never pin the blame on the first character at the scene! You work to prove their guilt. But I guess he didn't do anything else, or try to prove it, because that's our job in the game. Still, he seems to have a friendly rivalry/competition going on with our character, so I would imagine that he would know better. Oh well...
As I said before, I love this game. They did a marvelous job on this one. It's honestly one of my favorites in the series. Now, the CE has collectibles (windmills), morphing objects, and souvenirs, among other features. Its bonus chapter is a post-game story.
If you are a fan of mysteries/detective games, I think you will enjoy this one. I love that I got to play as a detective chasing down a normal criminal, which is normal in this series. No chasing monsters or anything of the sort. Show less

Sophie Dubois was the shining star of the Moulin Rouge, loved and admired by everyone she inspired, with the exception of one, her murderer! Evidence shows that a single rose given to Sophie after a brilliant performance would be her demise, this rose had been tainted with Paris Green, a pigment that is deadly in large doses. Madame Roche has been hired to investigate Sophies murder by a close friend and fellow artist, Henry de Toulouse, but did his admiration for Sophie cross the line? Perhaps Odette a supporting dancer and former friend of Sophie's could no longer bear to be hidden by Sophie's shadow. Maybe Ivan the stagehand who secretly admired Odette, is guilty of murdering the star to allow the women he loves to shine. One things for sure, the Janitor is not the murderer even though inspector LeBlanc feels confident that he has the right man!
Grab your forensics kit Madame Roche and start this investigation by examining the victim, 25 year old Sophie Dubois. The forensic kit has all the tools you need, cotton swabs to take samples of the killer pigment, pincers for prying the deadly rose from her rigamortis clenched fingers, gloves to eliminate contamination, and a magnifying glass to search for evidence in the form of a small hidden object game. Yep those are all the tools you'll need and I hope you can handle not only looking at a dead body but you're going to move her lifeless head to the opposite side for a better perspective, after you pry apart her cold stiff fingers of course. (don't worry folks she's not really dead, it's fake) This game has somewhat of a unique feature where you click on the map and select the coachman who is eagerly awaiting for your destination. Once you hand him the new desired location, he will hasten his trusty steed and have you delivered safe and sound to your desired location, that location will then be added to the map for future travel as well. There is also an available journal which is actually a mechanical tablet that doesn't even require an internet connection. All the information is stored for each character or suspect with personal information as well as any evidence you collect connected with that individual.
The Hidden Object Scenes are mostly interactive, progressive silhouette shapes where you find the first item that matches the shape and use that item back into the scene to expose the next item and so forth. Most of the HOS have zoomed in areas with even more objects to find as well as finding clues or codes to open compartments. There are also the standard list finds and you have an option to play a Match 3 game instead of the Hidden Object game. I did enjoy the mini games although most are on the easy breezy side, such as guiding a chain latch around a maze, you stop at different set points in order to open up gateways to allow the chain to reach the end slot. The game I liked required you to select three different animals on a painting that when combined matched the diagram shown for each of the selected gargoyles
The Collectors Edition has 41 Collectible Windmills, Achievements, a Souvenir Room, Codex, Match 3, replayable HOP's and mini games, the Making of, Pictures, Movies, Music, a built in Strategy Guide and a Bonus Chapter, enjoy! Show less
