This game has some of the most unusual features I've ever seen, it's almost overbearing, as if there's too much going on. You play the role of a homicide Detective, which isn't unusual in itself, but the year is 1899, and you are equipped with some very futuristic gadgets. The first gadget is your camera, which allows you to take pictures of suspicious areas, items or people. The pictures will automatically be placed in your Diary, to be used as evidence. The Diary will contain your tasks, photos, evidence collected, bios on everyone you come in contact with, and brief descriptions of your events. You also have an Ultraviolet lamp to collect hidden fingerprints, by scanning the lamp over the entire scene until all prints have been detected. There is a tab at the top of the screen that shows how many prints you have found, and you can purchase items in the shop to upgrade your gadgets or equipment, which is one of the coolest features I have seen in a long time! The upgrades include reducing the time it takes to recharge the hint button, an upgrade for the UV lamp, upgrades for the camera, an option for seeing silhouettes of evidence, reducing the time it takes to recharge your portable laboratory, the ability to skip or pass on puzzles faster, the ability to identify several evidences at the same time, and even a random hat to make you look cool! Even a cool looking detective needs the latest model of portable laboratories, simply place evidence into the container, click on the start button, play a quick mini game where you connect identical atoms, and voila, you get a brief description of that item. The Evidence Board is in your office at the Police Station, or you can access it through your diary, the evidence you collect will be placed into several circled categories. Eventually you will make a deduction about the case at hand. As you progress, take photos and collect prints, so will your Detective skills, and you are rewarded in the form of an Achievement, 31 in total as you collect new Badges. There are also 10 tubes to collect, but I haven't figured out yet what kind of tube it is or what it's used for.
The Hidden Object Scenes are unusual as well. Several objects are Morphing Objects. The Morphing Objects are constantly changing at a rapid speed, any item listed in red, is a morphing object. You must select the object when it is in the correct object that matches the item on the list, not every morphing object will be on the list so you have to figure out which item is morphing the correct object. (in other words there will still be morphing objects left in the HOS) The Mini Games are fairly run of the mill puzzles such as adjusting several monkeys on a chain until they are all aligned in the middle and all monkeys have red glowing eyes, when you move one monkey, others are affected. For a stand alone Standard Edition, this game has a lot going on, almost too much. The story is different, I just hope they are able to connect everything together without losing the players interest because of all the distractions, enjoy! Show less

At one point the computer froze, so that made things a bit dicey as to whether there were going to be tech issues in this game. However I got back in and things proceeded properly after that. The game is about murders and the collection of evidence and figuring out where the evidence goes. I have never played a game like this before. I would have liked the skip button and the hint buttons to have been faster, because I wanted to get further into the game and when I am doing the demo, I often skip the puzzles after seeing how they work. The skip was so slow, I had to figure the puzzles out. Those are the things I like to do after I buy the game. I usually do not read much of the story stuff either for the same reason. There was a puzzle that had to do with matching molecules in the evidence and I was not sure how to do it but my partner with whom I always play demos seemed to have the idea and we got through that.
Now let me say that the HO scenes were very different using morphing objects for some of the things one had to find. This meant that one had to wait for something to morph into the thing on the list and click on it before it morphed back.
I would have liked the color pallet to have been brighter, but it was just acceptable enough that it is still a buy for me on that score.
There is a camera that one has to use to take photos for the evidence board. There is also a lab where the items are analyzed and then become available to the evidence board.
The diary has a record of what is collected and gives the tasks one has to do. There is also an analysis of the people one meets as far as how they figure into the story and the crime.
There is a map that I found difficult to read in terms of seeing the icons that tell where one is and things to do. There is a place where one can buy things that make the game go faster but I was not sure how I earned a point so that I could buy a hat. I did not want a hat and was hoping to find another point so I could buy the ability for hints to go faster, so I did not get to that part of playing the game during the time for the demo.
The things one had to do and the way things progressed were different enough that the play was a little slow, but I am intrigued by the originality of the method for actually sleuthing. I do not know if the game will achieve the use of the little grey cells that one has to use in a game like Clue; however, I am intrigued to see.
The glitch that shut the game down does worry me. There was also a few times when I clicked on something and it was the right thing, but it did not respond. That too sounds a little warning that this game might have some technical stuff still to work out.
As an SE game, however, it is very interesting even though the characters are a bit stiff. I will definitely be buying it and I think you might also find it worthy and interesting. Show less

Never seen so much action in one game. You have to collect evidence and do some research on it in a special device you will find in your office. There are also finger-, hand- and footprints to find with an UV-lamp and you can buy upgrades with it like fastening the speed of your hint-button filling up. There is an evidence-board where you can combine your clues.
It looks like you can't choose a difficulty mode, but you can! Once you have started playing the game, you can go in the menu and you'll find a button called game-mode, where you can determine the difficulty, 3 different modes.
Although this game has some lagging between loading the scenes, I had no other problems running this game on my Windows 8.1 laptop.
I really like this game, the storyline is something different, there are some very nice and new gimmicks and if you play it in detective mode it's really challenging, as there are no sparkles or black-bar hints, and I totally love that! The hints are good and point you in the right direction if needed.
The HOS have morph's in them and the mini-games seem to be good. With all the collectibles and achievements this game feels more like a CE then a SE!
It's been a long time a game came out that I found worthy reviewing but this one I'm going to have fun with the next few hours (or maybe even days, as it gives the impression of being fairly long) and hope you will like it too! Enjoy! Show less

There is a jump map. You pick it up in your office in the police station almost at the end of the demo.
There are navigational arrows that show up on the edges of the screen when your mouse rolls over them indicating directions you can leave the present scene from. (One reviewer stated that there weren't any)
My computer loaded the scenes fast enough for me during the first scenes. After I arrived at the police station it did slow down noticeably but not enough to make me think my computer was crashing! I am running Windows 10.
The hint button works great telling you either the direction you need to travel from the present location or pointing at something in the scene you are in. It also loaded fast enough for me even without any upgrades!!!
Please use the tutorial to know how to use the tools they give you!
After covering all the mechanics of the game now on to the good stuff!!!
The game is a lot of fun to play. It's steampunk, which I love. You have a camera to take pictures of evidence you find along the way which goes on the evidence board. You have to go to the evidence board and drag the pictures onto the correct circle. I'm guessing we are going to be involved in solving the crimes, not just watching it get solved. Yea!!
There is also an ultraviolet light stick that we use to find fingerprints/footprints at the different locations. These fingerprints give you points that you can use to buy things like faster hint charging, a better camera, or upgrade the ultraviolet light. Also a cool detective hat!!
In my opinion, the game was intuitive. I knew what to do with all of the items I picked up along the way. The game moves you along as you play. If you haven't done everything there is to do in a scene, sometimes it traps you there until you do but not always. (There is a message that pops up to let you know you haven't finished all your tasks there)
I played one mini-game and there were no directions but it was easy to figure out what to do. The game was not that easy but figuring it out was.
I played one HOS and it was fun. The morphing objects did not change too fast for me. I was able to find all of the objects in a timely manner.
I thought the graphics were great and fit into the game perfectly. I also loved the voiceovers and look forward to finding more people to interact with!! (I've talked to 4 or 5 people so far)
Storyline: Very intriguing!!! I am hooked and want to keep playing so I can see what is going on!
Overall an excellent game that I am sure I will love finishing and so I am off to buy it now! Show less

I love original, quirky games like this!! Twice my game was erased, so I nearly gave up, but I'm glad I didn't. I reinstalled it and then it worked fine. Taken Souls feels like a CE with all the things you find and do. The translations are often humorous in their oddity. I'm still not sure how the handcuffs magically disappeared off my wrists, but hey. Fun game and totally unique ty.

Happy April Fool's Day! We return to merry London in the late 19th century where robotics and the occult are taking over the city! LOL We are treated to a Sherlock Holmes type mystery from the Monkeys from Outer Space! Despite what others say - I say it is a decent SE. It has a very strange storyline, but the graphics are decent, the HOP scenes are junk piles but somewhat interactive, and the puzzles are decent. However, I did find it a little confusing and hard to navigate. I also have NO IDEA what is going on with this storyline.
HERE ARE THE DETAILS:
The billionaire American greedster, Mr. Coins, has been murdered. Having capitalized and cornered the market on "robotics" in the 19th century (LOL), he probably has acquired some enemies. Ya think? This sleuth game finds you, as a detective, rummaging around London looking for clues and taking many, many, many photos to gather evidence of the crime. A poor sap has been jailed for a crime he probably didn't commit. Beneath the surface are occult activities and someone seemingly is murdering people for a major soul collection. Wednesday must be soul collection day at BF! Having her dead body left at the corner along with the trash cans in the alley, you encounter "Danielle" who has informed you of the dastardly plans of some cult. What is going on here? Geesh! I couldn't figure it out after an hour demo. Maybe you can and will you please tell me!
LEVELS - only one. You are taken directly to the game.
GRAPHICS: Cartoonish with bright colors. The voiceovers are decent British accents and they did have mouth movement.
INVENTORY: Interactive and puzzle-like.
HOP SCENES: Junk piles with some interactivity. Yeah - an April Fool's joke on you! In the first HOP scene, the items keep morphing, so you could not tell what they really were. Really changing it up dev - literally! In the demo, I only encountered this one HOP scene
PUZZLES: Move monkeys into the correct locations to open a door. You receive an Evidence Board to sort all information you receive on this case and must play puzzles are you examine the evidence.
EXTRA GOODIES:
A. 30 Achievements
B. No map but you get an evidence book with a diary in which to keep evidence and info on suspects
C. Shop of Researches to purchase items for the game
D. Camera to take pictures - (Boy - after this game - I may never want to take a "selfie" again!)
E. Collect 10 tubes - Why? - I have no idea
F. Receive an evidence "analyzer" as you play the game.
G. Collect fingerprints - I only collect 1 in the demo
