Life in the Lost Lands has continued peacefully for several decades since the oppression of the Black Horsemen was finally put to rest. But now, stone demon statues have begun coming to life in an abandoned old fort. The locals are panicking. No one suspects that an ancient curse has been awakened after sleeping for a thousand years. Thankfully, a mage named Maaron remembers Susan, the warrior who repeatedly saved the Lost Lands from the forces of evil. He summons her once more to the Lost Lands, because this time, it is not just the fate of Lost Lands at stake, but the entire human world... Susan's world.

Susan has been summoned to the Lost Lands once again, one minute enjoying the day in the here and now, the next solving the problems of the Lost Lands (btw, where's Jimmy at?) The Four Horsemen may have been stopped, but Maaron the hermit has new issues now that he has become the Druid Guild Elder. The Harpy statue has somehow come to life, half human, half avian, this abomination is deadly, and capable of inflicting massive poisonous wounds with its razor sharp talons! The Druids have been nearly wiped out, the only person left to help is Maaron's granddaughter, but at least her curiosity is helpful because she knows these forbidden lands better than anyone. In order for Susan to return home, she's going to have to find a way to stop this cursed beast, and find the strength to resist touching the gold that has turned the weak into stone!
I have always loved this up and coming series, that's quickly finding its place as one of the favorites with many gamers. The graphics are always top notch, the storyline is always interesting, and the characters are likeable. Although there's no custom difficulty mode, you can adjust the settings within the Easy, Normal or Hard modes, and many of the inventory items are complex items requiring some type of interaction before the items can be used such as combining that item with another inventory item. There are 22 different Achievements to earn, and a ton of Collectibles, which will unlock mini games and puzzles in the CE extras. There are 28 Manuscript Pages to find, 24 Figurines,14 Satchels, 22 Gold orbs, 20 Dice, 22 Coins, to find throughout the Lost Lands, and 35 Morphing Objects to find. Unfortunately, the cursor changes to a hand when you come across a collectible or morph, so I usually don't move my mouse when entering a new scene until I find all the extras so I don't let my mouse do the searching. There is also a section in the extras to take a quiz about the game itself, to test your knowledge of, ar how much you have retained about the game.
The Hidden Object Scenes are decent, although they are a bit scarce with only seven HOP's total throughout all five chapters and bonus chapter! The HOP available in the demo, was however a very entertaining and not so easy puzzle. You have to find items that match the silhouetted shape shown, and then use those items within several zoom zone areas as you are tasked with mixing up a special recipe, and there is even a zoom zone puzzle where you find identical matches.
At least there are plenty of Mini Games, which in my opinion is what makes or breaks a game. There are 25 Mini Games in total. Below is a list of brief descriptions of the games you will come across during the demo:
1) Play a xylophone in the correct order using a diagram.
2) Place different shaped brackets to guide a ball to several different chutes.
3) Restore the image on a wall by placing broken pieces.
This Collector's Edition has 8 Wallpapers, 33 Concept Art Pictures, 23 Movie Videos, 8 Music Soundtracks, 25 replayable Mini Games, 7 replayable Hidden Object Games, 22 Achievements, Several Collectibles that unlock features, 35 Morphing Objects, 24 hidden Figurines, a game Quiz, a built in Strategy Guide and a Bonus Chapter, enjoy! First of all i agree that this game stands out and should be the benchmark for all CE games. It sets a high standard and i certainly hope that more games follow the lead. Having played or purchased hundreds of games over the years, this one is, by far, one of my favorites (along with the four Horsemen).
The Golden Curse is without question of five star quality on all counts and i say hats off to the developers who have taken the time and trouble to put together all the winning features that make one really enjoy the experience of playing. Its been a long time (too long) since i have had the pleasure of immersing myself into a game where i really feel that i'm part of an exciting adventure and not just clicking like a mindless robot. I have gotten bored with the endless and thoughtless clicking that is the mainstay of most games that we are being offered as CE games.
ARTWORK :
Lost Lands - The Golden Curse is beautifully illustrated. The details of each scene are exceptional. Thank you to the developers for the treat of traveling through the colorful and imaginative decors where one is surrounded with a seemingly endless array of excellent artwork and fantasy.
GAME PLAY :
I would describe it as a highly intelligent game. The developers did not skimp on thought or design. Although this is not a fast paced game, it is very engaging and thoroughly enjoyable from beginning to end. Very well put together in a leisurely and thoughtful way, one is drawn into the story and has to think rather than just click ! Although the Golden Curse is a sequel to a series, one does not get the impression that its "been there, done that" as in so many other game series.
HOGs
Despite the fact that i am not a great fan of outline clues in HOGs, the hidden object games were challenging, different and required thought and logic. All were really excellent as one was not limited to just finding a shape. On the contrary, the importance of recognizing the shape was over-ridden by the requirement to concentrate on the logic. Again BRAVO.... lots of thought and effort went into designing each of these HOGs.
PUZZLES
The puzzles were fun also. NOT REPETITIVE at all .... and they tied perfectly well into the story line. Too many games lately seem to put in rather absurd "filler" puzzles that distract you and "break" the ambiance of the adventure you are supposed to be on... this being particularly irritating when the puzzles are boring and repetitive. All the puzzles in the Golden Curse were challenging yet not ridiculously difficult and the directions were always clear and concise.
CUT SCENES
They flow perfectly with the story-line and are visually enjoyable and of high quality.
MUSIC :
The music was unobtrusive... nothing negative to say about it but then again, i was so absorbed in the game that i paid little attention to it.
MAP :
The map was THE BEST (as it was in Four Horsemen). Again, this type of map should set the standard for well designed and user friendly maps for adventure games. On every level it was clear, easy to use and allowed one to perfectly navigate between scenes. The game has a certain amount of back and forth-ing but with the map.... its no problem to go from one area to another and enjoyable to use. NO frustration whatsoever !!! This is by far the BEST MAP i have ever used in any game. It also has the unique advantage of showing you what morphing objects or collectibles you have missed which allows you to go back, at your leisure, to search for those you overlooked. As another reviewer pointed out : you can get so absorbed in the game that you don't even realized that you did not pick up on some of the collectibles or morphs.... but in this game....no problem, the marvelous map discreetly points out to you that there are still some undiscovered items and you have the pleasure of going back to hunt for them. I also like it that the cursor changes into a hand, which can be helpful when one is stumped by an elusive collectible !
CHARACTERS :
The Characters are expressive and likable (not enough of them in my opinion as i do enjoy meeting them on the journey when they are so personable).
I LOVED this game and only wish we had more of the same... more often. The Golden Curse is chock full of interactive and challenging gameplay with celtic overtones in a Tolkien-like environment. The flow of the game was logical, intelligent and realistic.
The Golden Curse was worth its weight in gold, in adventure and in pleasure !!! Every penny spent purchasing this CE was well rewarded in enjoyable game play ! I highly recommend it and thank the developers for their effort and talent in offering us a truly classy game of superior quality!

The quality of the game play is equally high. It is quickly evident that a great deal of planning and design went into each puzzle and hidden object scene. This is not a click-fest, a little thought will be required, but it is not difficult. The collectibles are also well hidden. The use of inventory items is creative, but stays within the bounds of logic.
The story involves a treasure of cursed golden coins: the curse being that when the coins are touched, powerful beasts are unleashed upon the Lost Lands. There is a lot of story to absorb, especially with the collectible manuscripts. There is also a fair amount of dialog. Be prepared to take your time and enjoying the slower pace, at least in the beginning.
A terrific map is provided. It is a "tabbed" map, with an individual tab for each Lost Land, just like in the first game. And that's important because you will be using the map a lot.
Based on just the demo, I highly recommend this game and believe it is a candidate for GOTY, It's that good - as good as gold. Show less

Lost Lands is a superb adventure. The main character, Susan, is somehow transported into the Lost Land for reasons unknown. She rescues a child named Fiora who provides insights about the Lost Land. The girl takes Susan to her grandfather who is a powerful druid. He explains how sinister forces have decimated their realm and that somehow Susan is a chosen one, she who will vanquish the evil entities and remove a curse which turns beings to stone for touching gold items.
During the demo, there are no traditional word list hidden object segments. Rather silhouetted things must be acquired and interactively used within the scene to obtain one item which will assist Susan in her quest. One such item is a pair of gloves which protects her from the cursed gold. These segments demand some thought, no hand holding here.
Most of the puzzles are variations of well established themes, lots of them being very clever indeed.
Documents interspersed in the Lost Land provide information about the creatures living in this mythical world and also geographical data. This gives the player much needed facts about Lost Land. The feature expands the story line which might otherwise seem confusing.
Lots of things to pick up. At one point I had at least a dozen items in the inventory. The jump map is useful since there is much travelling involved. The map could have been a bit more user friendly though.
We get to create healing potions, find lots of keys and dig and scrape all over this land. Typical fantasy genre fare.
As the demo ends, we still don't have a clue as to why Susan is the chosen one. This is another strong point in the story line.
For those who cannot be without them, there are figurines to collect and about 3 dozen morphs.
This game gives the player lots more to do than most HOPAs. I am intrigued by it and will acquire it. Nice to have a good weekend sale to whet the appetite. I give Lost Lands an enthusiastic THUMBS UP !!!

2)The usual sorts of things to find from gears to parts of keys and requiring counter intuitive actions and stocking up in advance with ladders and garden sheers etc one would never think to pick up let alone be able to carry around.
3) A plot that goes ,as in previous of this series, through a series of problems , each disposed of predictably and similarly without any twists or turns of the story.
4)A story that ends abruptly without a moment even to rest in the pleasant resolution of things. These writers might ponder the example of the Oz books each of which ends with a party!
But outweighing all that for me is that the story provides a sort of comfort food for the mind maybe. It is a long story with well imagined scenes, ranging from a pastoral meadow with horses and a well, to the Escher like rooms of the Castle of Madness.
It is an adventure game which brightened a good few hours for me in this last week, and that is more than most of the recent games have provided me. I think maybe somehow you may enjoy it too.
So, understanding that reviews in the world of these games are not graded in the way that book or film reviews are and need be, I am giving this game five stars for the pleasure it gave and recommend it fully! Show less

* Voiceovers;
* Easy, Normal and Hard modes (you can turn off Skip and Hint);
* Interactive map;

* Find 28 manuscripts.
The graphics are superb - well defined, easy on the eye and very crisp. Colours are not too bright or garish.
Sound is very good. The music is orchestral and very beautiful.
The hidden object games are interactive silhouette. Find one item to use to find another item etc. These had a good challenge to them and I enjoyed doing them.
There are a huge amount of mini-games to play. There is making potions, lots of sliding tiles, restoring a damaged pattern, turning circles to move the figurines to their correct order, and so much more. Most of them are logical and not too hard or frustrating, but there were a few that took me a while to get. There were some that I had never played before which I enjoyed.
I don't normally use the interactive map in most games, but because this game is so big and having lots of locations, I played about 80% of the main game and then decided to use it. If you play on Easy and Normal modes, the map shows little icons if there is a morphing object and manuscript in that scene. When you have found them, then they disappear and you know you have got them. However, this is not the case in Hard mode, which I played. A hand comes over the morphing objects and manuscripts, but just move your mouse slowly around the scene because these can be very elusive and easily missed.
I got 17 of the Achievements, so I am going to keep playing the Extras to see if I can get any more.
In the Extras you can do a quiz and answer 20 questions, do 7 puzzles where you have to restore the image from mosiac pieces, redo the mini-games, etc. I enjoyed doing these.
So overall, this is a very challenging game with lots of locations - I WAS IN HEAVEN and sorry to see it end. I loved the story, the characters, the graphics - well everything really.
Well done Five BN Games who put such a lot of effort and creativity to make this fantastic game. You can't get any better than this. Show less
