Based on the Main & Bonus Games
On the one hand I hate to see the Final Cut series go, because I like the period, the art deco, the characters, and the tempo. But I understand Eipix' desire to end on a high note, rather than dwindle away as some devs' series have done.

On the one hand I hate to see the Final Cut series go, because I like the period, the art deco, the characters, and the tempo. But I understand Eipix' desire to end on a high note, rather than dwindle away as some devs' series have done.
The story you can get elsewhere, but I like the gadget that lets you assume someone else's appearance. As it turns out, it allows several twists and turns to the story, plus a surprise ending.
Graphics are bright, colorful and A+. Lots of scenery, 41 scenes to romp through, nice pacing, not too much "would you do me a favor?" nonsense, good creativity & design, and reasonable originality. No hammering ladders, feeding squirrels, finding well cranks or that tedium.
Puzzles and HOs are balanced, with option to play Match-3 on HO. Morphs are all in HOs. Puzzles are easy to moderate, adventure level is decent. You may carry inventory items around 30 min before using it, instead of 5 sec later as in some games. Yay.
Find small trophies resembling a face ("signs") in each scene, 41 in all. Find 3 each of candy canes & stockings and play bonus puzzles/HOs from past Final Cut games. Check out the homage to Final Cut vid too. Souvenir room is a mini-collectible hunt. Other CE bling includes replayable HOs & puzzles, plus the usual.
Is it worth a CE? It is to me, because this is exactly the kind of game I enjoy. Excellent production values, great setting, mystery with twist ending, good CE bling, and last of its kind.
As always, demo if you're not sure.

The art is bright, clear and beautiful. I love looking at it.
The music is ok--by that I mean that it's not so annoying that I had to turn it off.
The two minigames I found were fun, though easy.
The HOPs were OK, though I am not a HOP person. Better than most, though. I am somewhat annoyed by the fact that you have to solve some parts of the HOP to get access to other parts of the HOP, but that's probably because HOPs are my least favorite part.
The Extras are the real selling point for me. You get the usual collectibles, a bonus chapter, achievements, replayable movies, and all the art and music. Best of all, you get replayable puzzles, and not just for this game. There are HOPs and minigames to replay from previous Final Cut games, also. You win them by finding candy canes and Christmas stockings.
The story is a little "whaaaat?" in places, though. For example, your first goal is to meet up with Bernard, but then you kinda don't really (you'll see). Also, there is a place where a character tells you "you can't come in here," and then proceeds to watch you while you break into some object right in front of him. Didn't make sense.
One problem--leaving the HOP scenes unexpectedly. As with some other games I have played, there are objects towards the bottom of the screen that look as if they are in the HOP but are actually in the area to click in order to leave the HOP. So I keep bouncing out by accident.
Despite these two things, I am loving this game. I don't think I can wait for a good sale for this one. It's my new favorite game. Show less

I like everything about this game! The map is cool, and the extra Christmas present is a nice touch. All the usual cool Eipix bling, morph's, collectables and a couple of surprises make it an excellent experience.
I have purchased most of the Eipix games and am very familiar with their game play. I am very pleased with this last game in this series as it is original enough to make it interesting and yet still familiar enough to make it doable without hints and just an occasional check of the guide.
I look forward to the new realms these very creative people will take me next! Can I vote for Sci-Fi?

Just in time for the holidays, “star wars” have erupted in “Tinsel” town, between the movie studios of Wolf and Horizon, both vying for top billing. With Wolf Studios engaged in some shady business dealings, things seem to have gotten out of focus on this film set, and people are not what they appear to be. With this game, the developer says a final farewell to the “Final Cut” series, their very first production. Also celebrating the holidays, hidden away in their secret room of extras, our developer has also gotten into the Christmas spirit with some holiday trim and some little presents as well!
To me, this is a low 5-star game. The storyline is decent; however, this Hollywood “whodunit” series has definitely arrived at its “final scene.” This developer ends the series on a high note. The graphics are well-done as is the usual fare for this developer. It reflects the mood of the Golden Age of Hollywood. This game is a cutter-cutter “whodunit” similar in composition to the numerous others in the series. There is an equal amount of HOP scenes and mini-games. The HOP scenes are puzzle-like, creative and interactive. The mini-games are creative as well.
The HOP scenes are varied and most are multi-step scenes. In the demo they include lists of items, silhouette scenes, cryptic clues, and rebus clues. In some scenes you must locate items and interact with the scenes to locate additional items. You may opt to play a Match 3 game instead.
I thought the puzzles were creative and varied. There are a nice blend of easy and moderately difficult puzzles. The puzzles in the demo include matching puzzles, and a maze puzzle. Throughout the game, you will film suspects and using a camera containing three lenses, which will be used to bring their pictures into focus. After that, you must outline various images on the pictures. They become more difficult as you play into the game.
This is an average game. This is definitely not the best game this developer has produced nor the worst. There is no “wow” factor as we have experienced in some recent games by this developer. However, this game is better than the best games from some other developers. It is a nice “whodunit.” It did keep my interest.
On the “negative” side of this picture, many of the mainstay elements and gimmicks of this developer’s games are beginning to become a little hackneyed as they have been used in so many games. It might bode well for them to “freshen up” their gaming style and “develop” some new approaches to mini-games and HOP scenes. On the “plus side,” they realize when a series has run its course. They are bowing out of this series to “produce” some new story lines for their games, leaving this one on the cutting room floor.
As Wolf Studios is preparing to film “Myths of the World – The Heart of Desolation,” (also the name of one of my favorite HOP games!) some undercover work is going on. Behind all of this is an inventor with a secret invention which is causing chaos! With things not as they appear, you are going to have your work cut out for you.

Why would someone from the army be interested in the work of a movie studio? When your friend, a fellow journalist calls for help, you find yourself in a whirlpool of deceits, secret technologies, rivalry and deception. Does every invention have its good and bad use, and will some people always look for the bad one? Direct this movie, just make sure to make the Final Cut that counts. I REALLY enjoyed this finale' to the Final Cut Saga, I will truly miss this series. Since Off The Record is also now retired, I hope Eipix and Big Fish will continue this genre in the same era with a new series similar to Cadenza, Off the Record, and Final Cut. I look forward to new endeavors that play off these wonderful adventures of a gone by era. This is a must have edition for fans who have played all of games in the series. In a farewell nod to the very first series ever presented by this awesome game developer, we have the ultimate finale to the Final Cut series in Fade to Black. Things are not always as they seem and now it looks like some unsavory characters have stepped up the game as the tension escalates between the two top studios in movie land. Unfortunately, your photographer friend Bernard seems to have been caught right in the middle of the studio battle. When you receive an urgent message from Bernard you rush to his apartment to find two shady characters leaving. Of course, you decide to follow them and it isn’t long before bullets are flying. When you return to Bernard’s apartment you find that he has been murdered. Why would someone kill him and what was he investigating that led to his demise? Will you be able to solve his murder and bring those responsible to justice?
The game options include four modes of gameplay: Easy, Medium, Hard and Custom. In the custom mode the hints can be set to recharge anywhere from 10 to 120 seconds and the puzzle skips can be set to recharge in a range of 10 to 400 seconds. You can also turn of the HOP error click penalty. The voiceovers are excellent as is the entire sound package for the game. It goes without saying that the graphics are crisp and in the familiar style of the other Final Cut games.
Your tools include an interactive map and a camera that requires different lenses. Yep, you guessed it, every time you use the camera you have a little mini-game to complete. There was something similar in another recent game and, unfortunately, these things are just time-extending game gimmicks that I can live without.
The HOPS are varied and some are those multi-level types that are the signature for this dev. There is a good balance between puzzles and HOPs with the puzzles being typical and not too difficult to solve. Many HOPA lovers enjoy the easier puzzles so this game might be just right for them.
The CE version of the game has collectibles, souvenirs, and morphing objects. The other items include the Strategy Guide and the bonus chapter. In a very nice touch the dev has added some extra special holiday cheer to the package with their extras room. There is a tribute video to the Final Cut series included in the extras that is worth watching. The other extras include the bonus chapter and the strategy guide.
This developer is my favorite and for the most part I enjoy all of their games. The Final Cut series is one that I like but sometimes I have mixed feelings about the overall storyline of the games. When I first started playing the demo For Fade to Black I felt rather so-so about the game and, just as I was on the verge of total boredom, something clicked and grabbed my interest. One of the best things about this game dev is that they realize when a series has reached the end and know it is time to say farewell. IMHO, I am happy to see this series come to wrap as the twinkle of this star has faded. In Fade to Black the dev has given us a five-star game and one that many of you will love but, as always, please try the demo to see if this is a game you will enjoy. Show less
