“FUN FUN FUN!! This game is amazing. One of the best parts is that you get to play as 2 different characters. The story line pulls you right in. The HOPs are different. Not just find and click. If you want you can switch to a match 3 game instead but you definitely want to play the HOPs. This game has an evil Queen, a King, a Princess, a Fairy and Dwarves. This game is fun for everyone. I will purchase this game just as soon as it is released.”  - Robin, Beta Tester

“I JUST LOVED IT!!!!! I have every one in this series and this one will be a must add to my list. Fantastic story line, wonderful characters, beautiful graphics, excellent soundtrack...I can't wait to have this one in my game library.”  - Zoe, Beta Tester

Dark Romance Winter Lily is game number eight in the series. Winter Lily is loosely based on the story of Snow White and is told through the eyes of the two main characters Lily, the Princess of Winterhelm, and William the King of Lanceya.
Wicked Queen Nivella is having another meeting with her famous mirror wondering what it will take to stop her aging curse so that she can gain eternal youth. The Mirror tells the queen that only the purest heart can break the curse and make her eternally young. Thus starts another of the wonderful Dark Romance games. I could go more into the storyline but I think most of us are familiar with the tale of Snow White but what makes these games so much fun is the viewing of the story as it unfolds and is told by each of the main characters in turn. This is a beautiful game and one that I’ve been waiting to play. I love the fairy tale types of games as most of them are not at dark as some recent games, however, the developer does have a go at adding some darkness to this tale.
I love this game and the storyline that has me enjoying each new character I meet along the way. Well, the fairy might be an exception with her high-pitched, squeaky voice that I truly find grating. I think one of my favorite characters is Prospero the alchemist.
If you play a lot of Domini games then you will know there is really nothing different to be found in the HOPS. We have the now expected variety with storybook, silhouette, and list types included. Even with nothing new, the HOPS are fun and the items are not so small that I want to rip my eyelashes off as I look through a magnifier to spot them. The puzzles are fun and mostly easy even on the “Hard” setting. The puzzles include a lot of my favorite ones but with 18 of them in the game I am not going to list them. A couple of other reviewers do an excellent job of providing that information for you. As much as I appreciate what they do, I happen to love surprises and would rather figure it all out as I go along and then do a happy dance when I find a puzzle I really like.
If you prefer the Collector’s Edition of a game, this one includes various collectibles including Dwarven Artifacts to store in the Dwarven Museum, Chess, Pieces to complete a chessboard, and Lilies that can be used to buy items decorate your Royal Chambers. There are 32 Achievements to earn as well. Other extras include the ability to replay 18 Mini-games and 18 HOPS. There are 15 Wallpapers, Concept Artwork, Music, and Movies. There is a Bonus Chapter and a 54-page Strategy Guide. IMHO, this developer provides excellent value in their CE games with lots of collectibles and other extras to keep us happy.
Winter Lily is a wonderful, different and version of the Snow White tale that I have read countless times since childhood. The Dark Romance is a favorite series of mine but there were two games that I really didn’t like all that much. As it stands right now Winter Lily might just be my favorite. Yes I know that many of you will think the game is cookie-cutter but realistically most HOPA and TM games are just that. I happen to be a game addict and it doesn’t bother me overmuch that most games follow a set pattern. In this case the gameplay is fun, the HOPS terrific, and the puzzles fun so I don’t mind the pattern. Even though I believe that Winter Lily is an excellent addition to the Dark Romance series, please try the demo to see if it is a game you will enjoy as well. Happy gaming! Show less

Meet Snow White and her prince in this wintery game and beat the witch queen, who is after her and her new found love. In this variation of the tale only the purest heart can break the aging curse for witch queen Nivella, as her mirror tells her. She needs to destroy the bearer of this pure heart, Lily, Princess of Winterhelm. Winterhelm had already been defeated and Lily found refuge in a hut in the kingdom of Lanceya. Nivella is still after her, as the mirror told her, where to seek for the princess: in the kingdom of Lanceya, where William is king.
We play two roles, as always. Starting as Lily, we meet the wounded king William and help him with a potion. But he and his people are threatened as well, as he has given shelter to refugee Lily. So, very soon after their first meeting, William has to leave for his castle. There Nivella has already taken action.
With numerous entertaining puzzles and HOS, the story unfolds quite fast paced. It may be an adaption of Snow White, but after the introduction scene with Nivella and her mirror, we do not follow the original tale. Lily and William as protagonists are both sovereigns of their realms, Lily already defeated, William trying to protect his people. Nivella doesn't fight with an open visor, of course, as a witch she uses her supernatural powers.
All you need in this winter season: a charming story with challenging features (puzzles are optional hard or easy), a magical atmosphere, which drew me in at once and the varied gameplay in 2 roles. A must-have not only for fans of the series and of course for me.

REVIEW BASED ON THE ENTIRE MAIN GAME: Game Time: 4 Hours
5 CHAPTERS PLUS A BONUS CHAPTER: Strategy Guide: 54 Pages
OVERVIEW: Mirror! Mirror! on the Wall – Who is the meanest fairy tale queen of them all? Get prepared for Queen Nivella! Play the hot looking tag team King William and Princess Lily as they work to save their kingdoms from this nasty queen out to restore her youth. Her eternal youth will come at the expense of Lily and the inhabitants of both kingdoms.
Despite the annoying fairy at the beginning of the game, this is a beautifully crafted game! I always look forward to this developer’s games. There is also some exciting new surprise with each new game. In this game, they did this with the HOP scenes. The game is much better after the demo, with an engaging story, an excellent pace, and creatively designed HOP scenes and puzzles. This is a good game for fairy tale aficionados and puzzle lovers. However, even HOP lovers will find some incredibly beautiful and creatively designed scenes within this game.
MECHANICS: As in all their games, Domini provides all those extra goodies missing in many developers’ games nowadays. Returning is the choice in the difficulty of the puzzles between hard and casual versions. There are three collectibles including dwarven items to fill the Dwarven Museum, lilies for the Royal Chamber, and chess pieces (game characters) to fill a thematic chessboard. I found them easy to locate. There is a bar on the inventory bar indicating if all the collectibles have been collected within the scene. You can also set the difficulty for the puzzles within the main menu. However, if a puzzle is too challenging, you can always set it back to casual. You can replay eighteen (18) HOP scenes and eighteen (18) puzzles. There are thirty (30 achievements to collect.
BONUS CHAPTER: The bonus chapter is a prequel. Go back to the youth of Queen Nivella in this chapter. I have not played it totally; however, it appears to be of decent length and the quality of the puzzles and HOP scenes are excellent from what I have played.
PETER PAN WANTS TINKERBELL BACK! My only complaint is the addition of an annoying high-pitched fairy, Daisy. This nasal-pitched annoyance is truly irritating and not necessary in the enjoyment of the game. This gimmick somewhat ruined the game for me. However, she disappears POOF – after the demo! Hopefully, Domini will send all “helpers” back to their perspective fairy tale kingdoms.
HOP SCENES: There are thirteen (13) in the main part of the game. The bonus chapter probably has at least five (5) more. The HOP scenes after the demo are just incredible! It is evident Domini is aiming to become the TOP DEVELOPER on the BFG site! You can play a Match-3 game in lieu of the puzzles. After the demo there are three scenes which are breathtaking. In one you locate a variety of birds through silhouettes in a beautifully rendered scene. There is also another gorgeous “spot-the-differences” scene in which you must find differences between two halves of a tree. The final scene is a cleverly designed one in which the player locates items switching between three screens. Kudos Domini! I don’t usually like HOP scenes – but these are so well-crafted!
PUZZLES: There are thirty (30) in the main game. There are a variety of different styles of puzzles and most give you the option to choose between hard or casual versions of them. They are well-designed with excellent directions. Here are some of them
AFTER THE DEMO: POSSIBLE SPOILERS:
A. What’s Your Sign? Switch puzzle. Switch Zodiac characters on the front of the book with their symbol.
B. *Take time to Smell and Water the Roses. Pipe puzzle. Connect pipes so that they water all roses within the scene. Very clever. In the hard version, moving one pipe piece can move others as well. Just Beautiful!
C. I ‘Lava’ This Puzzle. Mathematical puzzle. By adding and subtracting numbers at the top and bottom of three tubes, fill each of them to the brim with lava.
D. Paint me a Picture! A very clever puzzle. Move a lens with an item in the middle of it to the proper position on a painting. You must rotate the pieces within the lens as well. 3X
E. Mirror, Mirror! Mathematical puzzle. Angle mirrors so that colored beams of light match up with their appropriate colored crystals.
F. A Puzzle Designed for Snowflakes! Draw lines through all snowflakes within a grid without running out of moves. You get five but can add more by landing on two tokens which give you more moves.
G. Get Into Line! Switch puzzle. Switch twelve (12) tokens with three (3) different images upon them so that each of three columns have four of the same token with them. They should match to the token at the top of the column.
EXTRAS:
Map is provided as you play the game
You can set the difficulty of the puzzles within the menu settings.

My favorite hops was a stained glass window that you have 3 lens you push and it changes slightly. I found some hops that I think are puzzles and I didn't like them. Like the feather so called hops. The only way I could tell they were hops was by the match 3 alternative on it. I also looked on the guide and it said hops but to me it was a puzzle.
My favorite puzzle is the arrow puzzle and the snow flake in the beginning. They had plenty others.
The game play was smooth and I knew what to do. I liked the kindness of the woman. She fed the wild life because she didn't want them to go hungry. Not that it's wise in real life.
I thought it was strange that Queen Grace has a southern accent and her son, King William didn't.
I liked the main game more than the bonus game.
The collectibles 12 chess pieces that are figures that have info. 15 Dwarven Artifacts that has info and the beard protector comment is funny. Now the ones I mentioned are item for item. The 48 lilies you would think are 48 individual lilies but they aren't. In the bonus, I was wondering how was I going to collect the remainder 12 lilies. Well, they counted multiples in areas. 2 here etc. Felt cheated.
The music doesn't continually play. It stops quite a bit. I think it should always play and I can turn it down if I want to. I want that option in a game. I didn't like the blur at the cut scenes. Now this game is data rich at 1.5Gs. I played it twice now and I'm happy I have it.
Overall I loved this game. I don't need perfection to love a game but I would prefer it. Perfection is rare. I just love playing games and I'm interested in most series.
20 notes, 20 concept art, 15 wallpapers, achievements. Replay 18 Hops, 18 mini-game, 35 Movies and 5 music.
Decorate with the lilies points you collected in the Royal Chambers.

I really enjoyed playing the demo, and I will soon own it. I loved the characters, but one complaint I have, and maybe some will disagree with me, is that when there is fairy's involved they always have high squeaky voices! Just once I've love to hear the voice be a grown woman's, or at least the voice of a teen age girl. It's hard to take a fairy seriously when she has that high squeaky voice. ...Show more

Just once I've love to hear the voice be a grown woman's, or at least the voice of a teen age girl. It's hard to take a fairy seriously when she has that high squeaky voice. For some reason that irks me. The rest of the demo was very enjoyable. You collected dwarf objects, pink lilies, and chess pieces. Some of the collectibles are in the scenes when you click on something to see what it's about. I didn't see any morphs. The HO's were fun...some you had to find the objects, some with shadows of the objects, some that were interactive, and some were story form; I really like the story forms HO's. I can't say much about the mini games because I skip those when I play a demo and have limited time. The graphics are great, and I love the looks of the king and princess. SHE doesn't have a squeaky voice! lol The game is filled with bright colorful scenery, even though it's winter time. I almost always don't like games that are all winter scenes, but this one was fine. When it was dark you could still see everything clearly. I can't wait to buy it....hopefully this coming week-end will have a good sale. If not, I'm buying it anyway. Show less

The graphics are beautiful and the voice acting, for the most part, is good. One exception is King William's mother. Her voiceover is really bad. That's literally the only thing I could find wrong with the game, but it's such a small part that it's easy to look past that one flaw. I'm sure others could find more to complain about, but the game was near perfection for me.
This is definitely worth the CE price tag. There is bling galore and numerous achievements to earn.

However, playing as two characters?? Fantastic! So often I think, hey, this would be easier if one of the characters I keep meeting and says they'll help me do more than randomly stand there waiting for me to bring them finished stuff and occasionally go "oh btw I had this in my pocket did you want it?"
I know only one other set of games that has you play as two characters, the truly fantastic, truly amazing, unbeatably good Royal Trouble series (Go check it out now. I'll wait).
I like HOPS, but so so so often, I feel like game makers add more and more to a story to stretch it out. A game that would be 3-4 hours becomes 5-6 or more with a HOP every few minutes. Most games, by the end of the demo, I'm *groaning* if I see yet. another. HOP.
This game did NOT have that. One would show up about the time I went, "hey I haven't seen a HOP in a while". The ones they included weren't the kind that annoy the pants off me, but made sense for their place and location. Cupboard nobody's looked at in fifteen years? Yep, I'll buy it's cluttered and I need to search. Storybook where I hunt for things while you bring me up to speed? Awesome! Exposition without an endless cutscene!! Even *better*. And I LIKE cutscenes, too, but I love balancing cutscenes with those 'story HOPs'
The bonus chapter makes you think very differently about the story you just played, and I love it when a game does that, reframes the original story. I won't say more so you enjoy it fully, but it was very very well done.
The characters were great (minus some of the voices), fun and they didn't feel like cardboard cutouts who uselessly stand around waiting for me to solve their problems. (In case it's not becoming obvious, I've played way too many HOGs and have very decided ideas about their shortcomings). "Oh nooooooo bad thing happened look the hero is here I will stand right here, possibly (probably) in serious danger, while they sort through four HOP scenes, combine fifteen unlikely items, and bring me the hidden item I need that I, who live here, probably could've found on my own in a quarter of the time". Or the ones who say "oh dear this is a terrible amount of trouble let me help" and the sum total of their help is handing you half of a broken item. While there is SOME of that in the game, most of them actually advance the plot in *meaningful* ways. One of the dwarves goes between the two people you're playing to convey a message, another prepares and sends a potion, and so on. It's like they're people with their own motivations and abilities and agency, not obstacles in my path! SO amazing, loved that feature.
The story was okay. It was not particularly innovative or new, nor was it particularly stale or overdone. Sort of middle of the road.
Things I was not a huge fan of:
Okay yes the fairy, we've mentioned that, move on. Actually, quite a bit of the voice acting was not great. That's fine, the mute button exists and only has to be employed through some of the cutscenes. Not a huge deal. And the music and ambient sounds were good, so I didn't play most of it on mute. I like to have the background game noise.
While the game struck a good balance with HOP scenes, I am convinced everything was either locked or broken. I mean, yes I know the evil evil Queen Nivella has inhabited this area and wants to stop me, but she LIVES IN THIS PLACE TOO. And the hut one of the characters lives in as well, they're both full of things that need a key, things that need a puzzle solved, things that are too rusted/hot/cold/frozen/whatever to use, and I'm just wondering, like.... Do they never need anything in their rooms? Does Queen Nivella not wake up in the middle of the night and just not feel like putting together four puzzles to find the screwdriver? Who in this mystical realm put these places together, Daedelus??
Anyway, as you can tell, I'm not a huge fan of everything broken/locked. And I know if you start taking a lot of these things out, there wouldn't be much of a game, but I dislike the illogical "every single thing you encounter in a lived-in area is going to be broken or locked" (Honestly, Royal Trouble did that well as well. Some things were broken or locked. When they were, it made sense. They advanced the story and gameplay in *other* ways, like having the characters have to use items to help each other out of their various binds without making everything completely unusable. If you didn't check out Royal Trouble the first time I mentioned it, go do so now. I'll wait. Or heck, go replay it, I'll wait some more, it's cool, I'm playing it again too)
I AM, however, a fan of the LOGICAL combinations that usually resulted in this game. Granted, this game has the same thing as all other HOGs, which I think is unavoidable, where you have to do things the specific way the developer intended, which is often not the way I would have done it, but okay, I'm guessing writing a game with multiple possible combinations is either impossible or extremely hard. I'll give them a pass. I will say, though, the game actually employs the basics of logic with this. Two broken pieces? I need GLUE too, not just wishes. Two scissor halves need a bolt. And so on. That bit I liked. Idk why, it meant more searching for me, but I always vaguely disliked 'oh of coooouuuurse they now work since I put the necessary pieces in the same area'.
There is a thing I really dislike and shows up in *every* HOG, including, unfortunately, this one (I live in hope one day a HOG will not have this. It will immediately become my favorite game. I'm pretty sure the story line could be entirely missing and I would still rate a game that doesn't do the following rant as one of my top tens). Items are single use. In my actual real life, when I find something useful, I hang on to it. Sure, certain things are single/limited use -- a glass of water, a batch of paint, some ink, matches -- but most things can be used a TON.
In a world where everything is either broken or locked, why on earth am I repeatedly throwing away knives, wrenches, screwdrivers, and lighters? Knives are not single use, they are really useful, they do not break easily, and if you have a folding pocket knife, you don't even worry about accidentally cutting yourself carrying it! So why does every single HOG treat these useful reuseable items as disposable? Why do I find a screwdriver, use it to unscrew ONE PANEL, throw it away because WHO ON EARTH KNOWS WHY, and then one room later go "oh I need a screwdriver. YOU HAD ONE, YOU TOSSED IT.
You used the lighter you found ONCE? I have a lighter in my pocket RIGHT NOW. I use it about 10 times a day. I bought this lighter -- for about a dollar -- a year ago, and it's not even sputtering yet.
Also, in the beginning, the character I am playing is a KING TRAVELLING ON THE ROAD. In a magical mystical land. Are you *seriously* trying to tell me he doesn't have a sword? A dagger? Anything useful at ALL?? I mean, if I leave the house for more than an hour, I have more than Clueless William did at the beginning. Not even counting my car keys.
Never mind the amount of detritus a character leaves behind them as they go through this game. Every item single use? The path behind them must look like a park or beach after a party: absolutely littered with trash. No wonder the evil villain keeps finding me, all they had to do was follow the trail of discarded useful items!
Now, granted, that rant is applicable to pretty much any HOG. That is not unique to this game. But it's annoying every time nonetheless.
Also why do almost all HOP scenes in any HOG only give you one useful item? I'm looking at the scene and spot about fourteen things I could think of a use for, why wouldn't I take all of them?? Especially if the game treats durable items as 'single-use'.
Bottom line: the game is very good, I liked most of the gameplay, and if you're still reading, kudos. Also go play Royal Trouble that game is also great. So was this one. Show less
I recommend this game!
