When I played the beta some time ago, I found a good, exciting crime story with animals as characters, so I felt reminded of a fable. Now there is still an entertaining crime story but the characters are humans now, though still bearing slight marks of the fable character, they could stand for.
The intro shows a scene, as if taken out of an older gangster movie: the boss of a gang orders a murder. The victim will be a lady, whom private eye Alfred Fox some time ago could help in a case of threatening letters. Subject to numerous articles in the yellow press, she seems to be an It girl. Both, Fox and she had a short love story, on her side more of an affair but they remained friends afterwards. When the hired killer arrives at her place, she is able to call Fox, but it is too late. When he arrives, she is already dead. Fox calls the police. Waiting for them, he is attacked by Barbara’s murderer, who was still in the house. A fight, which he loses. As friend and private investigator he cannot leave the case to the police but wants to investigate himself. After clearing himself of the suspicion to be the killer, he is on his way. There were some clues in Barbara’s living room, one of them a half burned photo of her and a possible lover, where you still can see the ringed hand of the man.
The story gives me the feeling of watching an old crime movie – charming, with a clear characterization of the figures. The bad ones are bad, the victim was sort of diva but the beauty with a good heart, the private investigator Fox a clever guy, who will surely win the race against the police and find the culprit. HOS and puzzles are creative and entertaining. All in all a surprisingly good game with an old but never boring story. Show less

OVERVIEW: Alfred Fox! This time it is personal! Be prepared to do some sleuthing in the dark, seamier sections of the Big City as you investigate the murder of your former flame, Barbara. This is a remastered cartoon whodunit which originally featured animals as the game characters. Personally, I thought the animal characters were a novel addition to the game. However, the humans do create a darker, more realistic image to the game.

This game should appeal to those who like 1940-style film noir murder mysteries or those who like an easy-breezy game. To me, the game is creatively designed with plenty of action and a nice portrayal of the dark side of the Big City. There is some tongue-in-cheek humor, almost a satire of the film noir genre. I chuckled to see the endless adoration of Alfred Fox’ devotion to his “gorgeous” diva, - bespectacled Barbara with her chubby chipmunk cheeks. The British accents throughout are masterful and take us back to a time of the stark reality produced by those black-and-white whodunits. I am purchasing this game. It is a nice way to spend a winter day!

MECHANICS: Brave Giant has provided a decent game filled with many extras. The story is an engaging whodunit with a cast of suspects who will keep you guessing as to the culprit behind the crime. There are equal number of HOP scenes and puzzles within the game. You can replay some of the HOP scenes and puzzles as well. There is also a game to play in lieu of the scenes. You collect thirty-three (33) items, all of which are related to detective work. The items include shoe prints, handprints, and one fingerprint! Why one fingerprint – who knows?

HOP SCENES: This is a classic HOP lovers’ delight. There is a variety of different styles of scenes. They include the usual lists of items. There is one search and replace scene which requires manipulation of the items once found within the scene. There is one FROG as well. Due to the dark nature of the scenes, I found some of the items difficult to locate. You can also play a variation of a Match-3 game in lieu of the scenes.

PUZZLES: The puzzles vary in style; however, none are difficult. They are also thematic and fit quite nicely within the theme of the game. There are quite a few physical puzzles in which you punch out a baddie. There are deduction puzzles which require you to assess if a suspect is telling the truth. You also answer questions by the police chief to see if you are not involved in the murder as well. I do feel the puzzles fit the sleuthing aspect of the game.

(A) List of items (B) Silhouette. There are morphing objects within this scene (C) Storybook. Locate 3 symbols for each page within the pages of the book. (D) Locate 12 bottle openers (E). List of items (F) Search and replace. Locate items and reuse them within the scene. (G) FROG. Locate parts to create a camera.

PUZZLES: (1) Easy 2) Moderate difficulty (3) Difficult

A. Moving tiles puzzle. Move three tokens to their designated locations to remove three bars to disclose a keyhole. Rating: 2
B. Sequence puzzle. Follow the sequence of punches to punch out a baddie. 3X Increases in difficulty.
C. Choose the right answer. Answer questions by choosing between 3 answers.
D. Jigsaw puzzle. Place pieces of a letter together by placing them within a jigsaw frame. You must rotate some pieces. Rating: 1
E. Mathematical puzzle. Using the numbers 1 to 9, create four problems so that the answers to the equations equal those on a given sheet of paper. Rating: 2
F. Knock out the baddie. Try to guess the proper sequence to knock out the baddie. 3X Trial and error.
G. Deduction puzzle. True or False. Assess if the suspect is telling the truth looking for clues on his clothing and demeaner.
H. Rotating rings puzzle. Rotate rings to recreate an image. Rating: 2

I hope this is going to be a series, because it shows so much promise. It's a true detective story without supernatural powers, a cute little sidekick, or a demon trying to capture you souls or dominate the world. If I had any criticism, which is very minor, some of the games were a bit too easy for my tastes, but they were inventive. Bottom line: buy it, buy it , buy it!

I haven't seen these developers before. They have a great story. Love the Who-Dun-It games.

I noticed there was a lot of puzzles repeats. Being a new developer with Big Fish, I will give them a pass.

I hope to see more from this developer to see how they have progressed in their graphics, puzzles and storylines.

If you haven't tried this game yet, I would give the demo a try.

It’s quite the rush to find the culprit and solve the mystery, but the game as a whole needs to keep you invested from start to finish, as well as feature a nice cast of character in order to make the whole thing feel believable and engaging.
Noir Chronicles: City of Crime is a gritty adventure game with puzzle and hidden object elements, in which you play the role of a detective named Gingertail. The game features the usual gameplay mechanics found in casual HOPAs, so you shouldn’t go in looking for original concepts or anything of the sort. However, at least the riddles can be pretty challenging every now and again.

The whole thing starts when Gingertail (Fox) is called to the house of his ex-girlfriend Barbara, where he finds out that she has been murdered. You must conduct the investigation and find the clues to lead you to the culprit, as well as make sure that the detective doesn’t take his revenge too far in the process. The story is not groundbreaking material, but there are enough engaging scenes to make you forget about it. The gameplay formula is as classic as it can get if you are a veteran of the genre, which means that all you have to do is examine every scene carefully and pick up items. These items can then be used to open the way to the next scene, as well as solve the occasional puzzles. Speaking of which, there are all sorts of mini-games when it comes to the puzzles, each one of which requires either coordination or a bit of critical thinking. I could do without the mini-games where you punch the opponent. I just think that's a little juvenile for a mystery adventure. Lastly, the graphics are the same pre-rendered scenes with hand-drawn artwork on top, but they look gorgeous most of the time, and the artists were free to add as much detail as they wanted without impacting the performance. In addition, there’s excellent voice acting for dialog scenes, as well as carefully-chosen sound effects to go along with the action on the screen. Brave Giant may really have a great new series in the works and I'd like to see more games in this series. Hopefully you will too. Cheers! Show less

loved this game. It was good to play a detective game with people and not the supernatural. I am over the ghost ones. this one is like the old detective games. Bring on more of the same
