Man, these guys sure know how to do Match 3 games right, in fact, that's the only genre they focus on and that my friends are why every Match 3 game they create is a masterpiece! You can always count on FRH to incorporate something new with each release, and you can always count on the games to be challenging. I never bother with the Demo trial on any of the Match 3 games, I go straight for the "Buy Now" button because I'm confident that they will all be superb games...and I've never had buyers remorse on any of the games by FRH Games. It may be a Monday morning but I'm doing my Happy Dance, wanna join me?
You can play in a Relaxed Mode or a Limited Moves or Limited Time Mode, and you can Enable/Disable the Hint Feature. After each Match 3 level, you can play a Solitaire or Mahjong game as well as my personal favorite, Spot the Difference with differences that aren't as obvious as you'd expect. (you can skip the mini-games) The tutorial is pretty vague but you can click on the Book at the top of the screen to read everything you need to know, including tips & tricks.
Spellarium is a Match 3 game where the only things that matter are Collecting the Coins and Collecting Colored Tiles, but those goals are tricky to obtain because there are so many variables. There are plenty of obstacles to make those goals really challenging to obtain, and more than likely, you'll have to replay many of the levels when playing with Limited Moves or Time...this ain't your granny's kind of Match 3 game!
There are several types of Coins available:
•Gold Coins: requires an adjacent match to collect.
•Dirty Coins: require 2 adjacent matches.
•Frozen Coins: requires activating torches.
•Half Coins: requires joining 2 halves by making matches between.
•Locked Coins: requires creating a path for the Key.
•Coin Molds: requires guiding liquid gold to the mold to form a coin.
There are several Obstacles preventing you from getting to the Coins, however, if they aren't blocking a coin there's no need to overcome some obstacles. Power-ups will destroy most obstacles as well:
•Crates: requires an adjacent match to remove.
•Shielded Crates: requires an adjacent match on the unshielded portion.
•Ground Tiles: requires adjacent matches.
•Clay Tiles: requires adjacent matches to remove.
•Stone Tiles: requires 2 adjacent matches to remove.
•Fog Covered Tiles: requires an adjacent match to remove the fog.
•Ice Tiles: requires a match 3 of whichever tile is trapped in the ice.
•Locked Coins: requires making matches to create a path in front of the key(s)
•Vials: requires filling with purple drops by matching vertically.
•Torches: melt ice by making adjacent matches to spread the flames.
•Bugs & Bug Coins: chase away or make adjacent matches.
•Red & Green Hot Stones: adjacent matches on Red & Green Cells will destroy the stones.
•Stumps: requires specified amounts of matches of whichever tile icon is shown on the stump.
Large Matches will earn Power-ups on the board, however, there are times when a Power-up can hurt rather than help (read the Tips & Tricks Book) Most power-ups can be moved or double-clicked to activate.
•Rockets: selects a target in order of importance. (order shown in Tips & Tricks)
•Bombs: explodes with an adjacent match (usually w/ a chain reaction)
•Toggles: matches on the toggle switches opens inaccessible board sections.
•Cannons: requires an adjacent match on the Red Cell to activate.
•Permanent Bombs: usually sets off chain reactions with an adjacent match.

With all of the insanity of the Covid-19 going on right now, I was over the moon elated to see the next installment of Spellarium pop up as today's new game. It will help keep my sanity in tact while I play it. The only problem is that once I start playing, it's nearly impossible to stop; so it will be over too quickly. Spellarium and the other one or two games similar to it are at the top of my Favorites List. They are unique unto themselves and always a huge treat. I downloaded it immediately and played a couple of levels before ordering it. As you can see, this isn't a detailed review of all the new features along with the comfortable old ones that are still so much fun since I didn't play the full hour trial before ordering it. I know the history of this particular game and each one is always better than the last. I trust #5 will not break that tradition, If you are new to Spellarium, it might take you a little bit to "get it," but if you utilize the help book in the upper left hand corner and remember that the coins are the only things that matter in completing a level, you'll soon figure it out - just stick with it. After going to my grocery store yesterday and finding so many empty shelves, it's a joy to have Spellarium 5 to take my mind to much more enjoyable places right now. I normally don't like "spot the difference" puzzles, but I am happy to do them in Spellarium. And I enjoy the solitaire games that pop up now and then, too. I am expecting to see the HO scenes, too. It's a great mix of different things to do. I know other reviewers will give you all the nitty gritty details of game play and the "what's old and what's new" information. But, if you are die hard fan like I am, you will be ordering it in the blink of an eye - no need to read any reviews. Show less

I have played every M3 this developer has put out. The Spellarium series is my favourite. It a bit like a goldilocks game, not to hard, not too easy...just right!
The game is easily recognisable if you have played others. The tiles are mostly new, but some from recent other games by this developer. There are the usual frozen coins, the cannons, droplets to unfreeze coins or create an explosion in the bottle, the fire, the keys seeking locked coins, and the bonus rockets and dynamite.
One the new features is a 'toggle' switch. Some parts of the board are faded out...and you may need to get to then to finish a level..or to get your keys moving to the coin on the far side. Sometimes you have coins going in different directions and it is challenging to figure out how not to let one upset the other as you use the toggle and they pass in the night. You may clear a path for one but send the other back.
There is also a 'permenant bomb' which requires sometimes an explosion..or 'many' matches next to it to remove it from blocking your path. The usual minigames are there (they never change.. yawn...(Find the difference, cards etc)
The tiles are big and colourful, the challenge is certainly there, although I did notice that if I had to repeat a level whilst getting used to 'how things worked'..the tiles seemed to be kinder to me the second time, and I am sure it was not just my imagination! Many more bonus seemed to fall or appear from nowhere?. See what you think.
So all in all, and old familiar friend with a few new challenges but as always just a lot of fun to play. I don't always give full stars to games that are mostly the 'same', but the developers always change up the board layouts so they are more 'familiar' than the 'same'. Try the demo, and remember this game is about getting rid of coins not necessarily clearing everything on the board. Enjoy! Show less

Yes most of the mechanics are the same but I love the new feature where you need to unlock different areas of the board to proceed. These games are always very challenging which I love. I do not play the mini games and you can just skip these straight away which is a plus for me.
The only negative I find which applies to all these games is this constant darkening of the screen and the flashing of what you are aiming for. This is a regular occurrence and I find annoying and there is no way to turn it off. I have noticed on previous games people comment on this yet they still do it. If you could only turn it off it would make a big difference. On this game you need the larger cursor as if you turn it off the arrow is way too small. Enjoy

The Spellarium Series has never lost its ability to keep me entertained with unique match 3 challenges and fun mini games. Although I'm not very fond of the too-easy solitaire and mahjong I still play them sometimes. My favorite is Find the Difference because they are challenging, wish more were included.
The graphics and color are always sharp and vibrant, adding more quality to this excellent game. I love "building" the surroundings. The goals, obstacles, power-ups are all positively great, I really like the sound effects and getting to the coins isn't so easy. Every new Spellarium brings something new to the table and the challenge never wanes. A good, solid match 3 game every time!
I highly recommend this series for its consistent quality and challenging gameplay. The challenge is not extreme but, in my opinion, the fun is!! And with the Relaxed Mode, I always have a grand time with no pressure to beat the clock. This is easily a 5-star game for me. Show less
