The Darkest Shrine is game number two in the Detectives United series and, at least for me, it is far better than the original. I found the first game rather tedious while The Darkest Shrine is a fast-paced game that is not bogged down in minute details. At least I found the progress quite good and far more interesting because it moved along while switching between characters.
Because I don’t expect every detail in a HOPA game to be logical, I tend to focus more on the gameplay rather than spending my time thinking about the minutiae. The Darkest Night is entertaining with a good storyline, great puzzles, and interesting HOPS; which are primarily what I look for in the games I choose to play.
There is some variety in the HOPS and some require a bit of interaction to find the items. As is the case in recent games there seems to be an emphasis on the mini-HOPS that I have come to think of as “quick fixes” because the developers don’t want to spend time creating decent, more involved scenes. I don’t particularly like mini-HOPS but looks like they are here to stay. The puzzles are decent, if not overly difficult, and many are ones that I particularly enjoy solving. At least it seems like there is more of a balance between HOPS and puzzles that I think should be the norm in HOPA games.
The characters in the game are familiar with James from Haunted Hotel, Agent Brown from Mystery Trackers, and Anna Gray from Grim Tales who have now combined their unique abilities to solve cases in the new Detectives United series. In the Darkest Shrine each detective is dispatched to a different location to see what information they can find as they solve the case. I have to agree with Pennmom who thinks that if Anna Gray can tote her dad’s skull with her, then Agent Brown should have had Elf tag along with him as well. Yes, devs a big mistake that maybe you should fix in the next Detectives United game.
All in all I think this is a decent CE game that includes most of the bells and whistles that I look forward to finding in a CE so it is definitely one that I will add to my collection. Although Detectives United II The Darkest Shrine is the perfect game for me and the way that I enjoy playing, please try the demo to see if it is a game that you will enjoy as well. Happy gaming! Really enjoyed this game. I love the Mystery Trackers series and enjoyed the way this game is linked to those. You switch characters to play at different points as there are three different threads to the game. Clear graphics, good puzzles and great storyline. Way too short which is becoming an increasing feature of games today- sadly especially for a Collector's Edition and the price you pay

I like this game .
I did use the hint button more on this one but I was being lazy since one does look for many items. The items are used fairly quick so one does not have to many at once,
I did have glitches couple times. One it did freeze up but once I restarted the game I never had that problem again, my computer? The other was I had two items that I found stuck on the screen which made me

I did have glitches couple times. One it did freeze up but once I restarted the game I never had that problem again, my computer? The other was I had two items that I found stuck on the screen which made me think I needed to use them. Once I quit and restarted the game these were gone and it never happened again.
The game was not scary even though going through tunnels couple of screams and ghost popped up that woke me up a little.
Some of the mini games were hard and I skipped them but others might have no problem.
Story line was ok but if the game is interesting I tend to not care to much if it is good or not.
The other game is as good and the bonus part had at the end a sneak peek at maybe the next game in this series .
The bonus part was good not to long but the extra's were excellent and good selection which I think all Collector Editions should be like. They are twice as much.
Try the demo and if you like it I think one will like the rest of the game.

It's great getting to play as 3 different characters. You even get the bonus "skull" as a companion, plus you can communicate via a device at some points in the game, so you always feel like someone is with you.
The scenes are very cozy, you always know what to do next, the object interactions always make sense. The map interface is very easy to use. The switching between characters is seamless and the object "puzzles" are pretty neat as well. There is almost no backtracking and the voice acting is quite good. Even going back in time wasn't cheesy as it was done right and felt natural within the story and the well rendered scenes.
I cannot understand any of the mid to lower ratings as everything was great about this games. There's just the right amount of HOGs, they're large and easier to find, there are no odd objects and the puzzles were pretty good too.
If i had to knit-pick, there could have been a couple more puzzles maybe, maybe "invert" the HOGs as they've done with some newer games to make it more challenging and my main complaint is the game is too short. But that's because it's so good.
I hope they make more games in this series as this is easily one of my favorite titles that left me wanting more! Show less

Immersive storyline, characters, and enjoyed the just right challenges of the puzzles. Hated for it to end. I love playing 3rd person characters who have their own names and identity, that I can actually see in the game, rather than 2nd person. More of these, please!

OPINION: I love this new series.. Family drama queen Anna Gray along with her sidekick father, Richard, are two of my favorite HOP game characters. The story contributes to making this a fantastic game. The story begins with the three detectives given assignments in different locations which eventually weave into one central plot as the game progresses. The variety of locations and activities provide a fast pace and keep the player engaged. Although the game is short with fewer HOP scenes and puzzles than in most games, it is well-designed and kept my interest.
There are twenty-six (26) HOP scenes, nine (9) of which are mini-HOP scenes. The mini-HOP scenes contain between four (4) to eight (8) items which need to be located sequentially, one item at a time. The items are easy to locate within those scenes. The other scenes are either lists of items or silhouette. I was somewhat disappointed in the HOP scenes. There is little creative design demonstrated by these scenes. Most are junkpiles and not very interactive. Nevertheless, the mini-games are excellent. There are twenty (20) of them within the game. They vary in difficulty. There are some multiple-step ones. And although the HOP scenes are less than stellar, the mini-games and story behind this game make up for the lackluster HOP scenes. There are three collectibles which I found easy to locate.
MECHANICS:
• Four (4) levels of play including a customized version.
• Eighteen (18) Achievements.
• Collect thirty (30) morphing objects
• Collect fourteen (14) morphing figurines of the characters
• Collect twenty (20) puzzle pieces creating screensavers
• Twelve (12) wallpapers along with concept art and music
• Replay fifteen (15) HOP scenes and twelve (12) mini-games
• Secret room played at the end to search for additional morphing items.
OVERVIEW/STORY: Join the 3 super sleuths, Anna Gray, James Blackthorne, and Agent Brown as they tag team to solve another case. This time, the nefarious group S.H.R.I.N.E. is causing havoc. Operation Darkest Night is underway, a nefarious plan orchestrated by the mastermind of this group who will stop at nothing, even defying time and space, to succeed with his plans. Along for the ride is Anna’s ghostly father, Vincent, who, in this game, may wish he had remained in the afterlife.
BONUS CHAPTER: It is a sequel. S.H.R.I.N.E. has been attacked and the super detectives are back on the case sans Anna Gray. Anna Gray is on vacation – or is she? Mysteriously, she is seen within the chapter, lurking in the background. Discover the story behind “Anna Gray” and her mysterious appearance within this chapter. Also, rescue members of S.H.R.I.N.E. as you travel to another dimension. This is a long chapter. It is decent addition to the game. A surprise announcement is made at the end of this chapter concerning “Anna Gray.” There are six (6) HOP scenes and five (5) mini-games in this chapter. Continue searching for all three collectibles. I found the chapter consistent with the quality of the main game and worthy the collector’s edition designation.
SPOILERS: HERE ARE SAMPLES OF THE MINI-GAMES AFTER THE DEMO:
A. 3-Part Mini-game. Move a car through a maze. (1) Assembly puzzle. Place segments of a track into position to lead a car to its destination. (2) Switch puzzle. Switch 4 geometric shapes on 4 dials so each dial has the same 4 geometric shapes. (3) Connection puzzle. Rotate and connect colored wires, connecting them from one end to the other. If you make any mistakes you must restart- even replaying the puzzles. Excellent mini-game!
B. Paint-by-number. Color segments of a map by matching symbols on each segment with a given guide. Click on the sections of the map until they turn the proper color.
C. Connect-the-dots. Connect all dots within a maze grid without retracing steps.
BONUS CHAPTER
D. 2-part mini-game. (1) Connection puzzle. Connect segments of a mechanism with circuits. (2) Sequence puzzle. Press buttons on the circuits in sequential order to activate a bridge.
E. Maze puzzle. Go through a maze using a flashlight, referring to a map displayed on the screen. The map will remain dark until you uncover paths which will be remain displayed once discovered.
