In recent times, this developer has not been a favorite because of its heavy use of puzzles in its games. However, when I met Morty, a cat with attitude, that changed everything and I absolutely loved this game. I wasn’t planning to play more than just the demo of Mystery Tales Art and Souls, but I simply had to keep going and buy the game. This is one that I really enjoyed!

Several years ago, there was a rash of games that dealt with the subject of people being sucked into paintings and, at that time, I was rather tired of the storyline. That being said, I truly enjoyed this game. The story is one of a father’s love, albeit misguided. I don’t generally like to give a “blow by blow” description of HOPA games and all that we can expect to find so I will leave it to others to provide all the details.
Since I am not a huge fan of puzzles or mini-games, I was definitely surprised that I enjoyed the those in Art and Souls. There were a few old favorite puzzles that I haven’t seen in quite a while and those kept me busy happily solving away. The HOPS are amazing and beautiful and, IMHO, worth the price of the game.
We all know this developer has a great love affair with intense colors and we will find them in this game as well but the colors don’t seem as unrealistic and don’t rely on too many neon colors. I think some of the backgrounds have been lightened up as well and that helped a lot. Mystery Tales Art and Souls is a game that I find very enjoyable. There is a bit of back and forth between scenes but I like that more than I do the strictly linear games. I now have to remember where I saw an item so I can go back and complete the required actions to move forward.
Generally having a pet helper in a game isn’t something I love, but a cat with attitude makes all the difference. In fact, he was rather a fun cat and I hope to see him in another game from this developer. Wish I could have a Morty of my own but I think my Yorkies would rebel if I brought a cat home so it’s safer to have one in the game world.
Although I haven’t quite finished the game, I certainly like everything about this one. Even though this one is a keeper and perfect for me, as always, I recommend that you try the demo to see if you will enjoy it as well. Happy gaming! Show less

One of my favourites in this episode of the game, was Morty the cat. I won't give any more away, but just for his spunk this game is well and truly worth adding to your collection of Domini games.
Hopefully, they include him in more stories from now. Show less

This developer uses bright colours and I appreciate it. Often, I will just look around at each new scene taking it all in. It pays to click on different items, because you never know what will happen when you do. This adds to the fun.
The other thing I always appreciate is the indicator showing you if there are items to collect left to find. Typically, I go in and out of a game numerous times before I am done with it, and I can't always remember where I left off, or what else needs to be done. So I like having a reminder of where I am at. And there isn't a lot of unnecessary toing and froing. There are usually several things to do in each location, which is a welcome relief.
I thought the story line was good and easy to follow.
Once again, Domini brought me a game I could truly enjoy! Show less

I have only played the trial. Whilst not that bad, I think that this is a case of padding rather than substance. I unlike the other review think we do deserve longer games for CE editions. Older games have six to eight chapters or more and now we are down to three. That said I cannot say I am not enjoying to some degree what I have played and the above review gives a lot more in depth account.
I recommend this game!

When I go to the gallery I see her in the doorway and it slams closed and I hear her shriek. The opening gets boring. Your doing things and it's a big yawn.
I was bored with this game until I reached the painted world. You would think they would make it exciting in the beginning to keep buyers. The purple cat with the blue and green eye is entertaining to me. Just seeing his fat little body creeping up made me laugh. Just seeing Morty the cat after the crows. Laughed again. Good effects Domini.
The collectibles are 70 coins to furnish the study. Why they want 49 coins for a globe seems like I'm being short changed. I always save up for what I want most and buy it first, that isn't it. 15 morphing statues of famous artists called portraits. 15 hidden post cards. To see your collectibles, click on the wanted paint can.
It has 3 chapters + bonus. Data rich at 1.2 G. Replays on 18 hops, 15 mini-games, 5 music and my favorite 29 videos.
The map can show you your collectible not yet found. The map also has achievements. Domini's achievements are ho hum. The ending of the trial is different from the beta. I'd like the original coloring back and the moldy teal to go away.
The hops are fun with morphing objects, placing objects and matching pairs so far. I could do some puzzles and I skipped some. Custom setting Zero skip and hint time.
Over all I liked the game in parts. Show less

I love Morty the cat with his so-called British accent. He definitely has an attitude! He does seem to help out a lot and so there is a part where you give the little guy a break and a treat of milk in a dish. That was cool. And like most cats, Morty takes a lot of naps! Elf, he is not, but he is useful for sure! LOL!

Elf, he is not, but he is useful for sure! LOL!
I'm more than halfway into this SE version of the game and I have to say Domini devs are truly clever. I know they put a lot of heart and "soul" into the creation of this game, and for that matter, all their games. Brave to devs.
The storyline is really good and the villain reminds me of the "Joker" without all the paint on his face. Speaking of paint, you would think he would have had some on his face since this game is all about "paintings"!
Lezetto, the villain, has the "brush"; he ruins people's lives by making them prisoners of this so-called world of his. Vincent found this brush in 1863 and used it to paint for fun. He never imagined the brush was magical. But then he painted his cat, Morty, who disappeared. Of course, there is much more to the story and you're just gonna' have to find out for yourselves. But we the players are always entering strange worlds and dealing with entities in so many other games--nothing really new here. But it's a good story nonetheless.
I do find that I'm growing tired of symbols and whatnots in puzzles in any given game but it's all in the "name of the game"! Still, the puzzles are very good. The tasks sometimes have no rhyme to their meaning. And, again, one of my pet peeves is if there is an injured person, child, or animal, please let us take care of them as soon as possible instead of having to go to other areas to retrieve the item that is needed like 4 scenes later! My gosh, they could be dead by the time I get those items for them! It may seem silly, but that's just me.
Many of the tasks are pretty cool to find though. I enjoyed finding the different colored lenses for the puzzle that required you to select the three colored lenses to find the items.
I had to find 4 piano keys and I also retrieved a music manual for the piano. When I got all the items I expected a minigame to follow, but it turned out to be something else. So these devs do surprise you now and then and I think they're rather creative. The flow is good not the greatest.
Earlier in the game, I had to use Morthy to help me out and he proceeded to tell me that the next time I would have to get the item myself! Harrumph!! Cute cat.
There are scenes where Domini devs position certain items just for their amusement and ours, too! I clicked on a portrait of two people and their heads fell out of sight! I left that area and came back to see if the heads returned, and they didn't. The attention to detail is great! LOL! Pretty cool!
I love the special effects; and the graphics, IMO, are beautiful and colorful. The music is very good. The voiceovers are wonderful. Though this is not the CE version, I'm rather glad I purchased the SE instead. I recommend this game. Try the demo if you wish. Show less

I like this game but sometimes can't figure out how to use objects I collect... for example, there's a shaving brush, but I couldn't use it to brush away some pieces of broken pottery. I had to make a "broom" out of wheat with a hair band tied around it, and use that. And I used a barrel of red wine to put out a fire -- anyone who has ever cooked with wine knows that it is highly flammable. ...Show more
