I was very critical of the last two MCF games because they abandoned everything that made MCF the holy grail of HOPA games. I was very critical of the last two MCF games because they abandoned everything that made MCF the holy grail of HOPA games. They obviously thought long and hard about what went wrong and chose to go back to the drawing board and try harder...and the effort they put forth in creating Pendle Tower couldn't be more obvious to me!
They abolished the cutsie graphics, washed out the color palette (just enough), and created a plot that was interesting enough to make you want to continue. The tasks have vastly improved and almost everything requires fidgeting with mechanically. My only complaint here is that there aren't enough active zones per scene, BUT it was really nice to have to think about tasks for once, absolutely not cookie-cutter, and I can't help thinking how "out of their comfort zone" this developer must have been.
I'm not going to lie, HOPAs bore me lately, it's always the same tasks, the same games, the same features, HOs that a two-year-old could solve, the same collectibles, basically a carbon copy from game to game. I simply did not feel bored playing this game and I even enjoyed the HO scenes (particularly the Morphing scene that switched between past and present)
I usually hate gadgety features but I enjoyed the Riddle Blueprint puzzles, and the mini-games are my favorite kind, a mechanical type that requires thinking a couple of steps ahead to solve them, or requires tinkering with gauges, gears, levers, etc. Granny did a fantastic job with the Rube Goldberg puzzles, they still need to be more of a cause & effect, chain-reaction type of puzzle but if Granny improved this much in one year then I can't imagine how far they'll fly with it next year!
I'm not saying this game compares to a Dire Grove, Ravenhearst original, I've lost hope that BF will ever allow these developers to create what they know in their hearts is what we the customers want. They seem to tie their hands behind their backs and expect them to create masterpieces on a ridiculous budget...but for now, this "incident" was starting point...well done Grandma :)

This is terrific. I'm half way through and am enjoying every minute of it. First and foremost; the graphics and palette- wow!! The effort on the graphics is grand in scope (literally), very well rendered, and the colorists took their time resulting in a beautiful, realistic yet pleasing palette. Very well done! Secondly the story- great ghost story, but it's what surrounds the story that makes this effort so much fun. We've got our find 'ems but we are not inundated with them- two collectibles to a scene and a puzzle piece in the close up. Great, that's enough- perfect. The scenes themselves are not overly busy with chores but there is work to do- and you have to think! Imagine that! I love the puzzles- lots of new twists there and a few will take some time. GrandMa put some thought into these puzzles! The HOPs are fun, I'm enjoying all of them. (I think more effort was put into the puzzles). The voice acting, well, it's decent and at least it's appropriate for Britain in that the accents are pretty close to authentic English accents. Too many times, the voice acting in other games have really gone down in quality as of late, very lazy efforts. The best V-O acting I've ever heard was in the Adam Wolfe series- that deserves a V-O Oscar. But, the voice acting in this game does not lower its overall quality and Her Majesty called to tell me she's enjoying playing the game very much (LOL). I love the little cameos of Madame Fate that appear: talk about a classic!! First MCF ever and a fantastic quality HOP game, hours of fun! I'm having a great time visiting GrandMa's house for Thanksgiving! Happy Turkey Day and thanks to Big Fish and GrandMa!!! Show less

Mystery Case Files: Incident at Pendle Tower is the 23rd game in the Mystery Case files series, which is the longest and most famous hidden object series to date. When it was announced that Grandma Studios would now be taking over the Mystery Case Files series after it's previous creator, Eipix, stopped creating games, it was pretty well known that they would have a large task to fulfill. While Harbinger and Crossfade were great games in my opinion, none really hit the *Mystery Case Files* vibe, which in my opinion stopped hitting about 7 games ago... until now.
Mystery Case Files: Incident at Pendle Tower was one of the best Mystery Case Files games to come out over the past few years, and while it does not live up to some of the older Mystery Case Files games, it comes very close. Grandma Studios did an excellent job this time around bringing a tricky, unique and all around excellent game. Personally, I think the idea of travelling back to previous cases has been reused way too much, it was done twice (three times maybe?) and that quite certainly is enough already; this game definitely did it best though, it only had slight references that made me smile remembering them.
The game took me about 4 hours to complete, and while yes some bits are a little tricky, it's mainly because it's quite different from the other new games releasing now. Let me explain, most games released now are cookie cutter you-know-exactly-what-you're-going-to-do-with-an-object-before-you-even-receive-it easy, this game completely breaks that mold and actually requires a cognitive brain process.
The story was good in my opinion, you can definitely tell Grandma Studios tried hard to make this as dark as they could without big fish not allowing them to publish it, and they did an overall pretty good job. The story was not *incredible* but it was definitely better than other stories I've played recently *cough* any Domini game ever *cough*
Overall the bonus chapter acted as a prologue to the main story, and answered how everything came to be that was not already answered in the main story. There are two types of collectibles hidden throughout, puzzle pieces which appear on interactive scenes, and stained glass pieces that are shown in the main scenes themselves.
The moral of the story, do I recommend this game? Yes, whether that be on sale or full price I think this game is worth it, Grandma Studios did an excellent job on this game so it's definitely worth your time to play it. Show less

OK, so it's not exactly the MCF game of the past. However, since the cabal-style takeover at Big Fish it is the best game I've seen. I love the storyline, the music and the color palette they've chosen. I'm buying it today because it is a long cool drink of water in the dry desert of games BF now offers.

A game that has some different features and puzzles that I can actually solve. I am really enjoying this. I have stepped back and am pickier about the games I purchase so I only get the best and I don't have to write a bad review.

Every time a new MCF game comes out I think to myself "this really makes every other HOG game seem sad". This one is no exception.
I agree with some of the other reviewers that this one is better than the last couple. I was beginning to despair about Grandma making the solid hit here, but this one is really solid. I appreciate the smoother integration of hints into the multi-puzzles.

My only annoyance is that the game was pretty short. I would have liked another hour or so of gameplay. (I finished the game, including bonus chapter, in ~5 hours). Show less

Review based on trial. Without a doubt, the most intriguing MCF I've played in a long time! I love the series, have every single installment. Visually, this one is above the rest. I was on the edge of my seat going into that lobby! I am most certainly making this purchase. Well done Grandma!

I almost never pay $13.99 for a game. I wait for a bogo or a substancial sale. Didn't care, had to have it.
I almost never play a game nonstop. Did this time.
Not once did I have to feed a pet, cut barbed wire with cuticle clippers, chop a tree when there is a ton of room to walk around it, or perform any of the other boring cookie cutter tasks save one - and because the game is so good, I only noted it in passing.
Read penmom's review and sunnyglow's review for more details.
All I can say is that it's been a long time since I enjoyed a HOPA this much, and I pray that the other studios pay heed to this latest MCF. Show less
