I play all of these games on custom mode at an average pace. I always use the stopwatch on my phone when I’m playing. I try to complete the mini games but will skip them the minute I become frustrated. I’m just showing how I play because it could take you more or less time.
Due to the less than stellar reviews of this game I wasn’t sure I wanted it. After I did the demo I bought it as a second CE in a buy one get one sale. I’m so glad I did. This is my new favorite game by Eipix. This game gets better and better after the demo IMO and I had so much fun spending time in beautiful Ireland. Most of the scenes are in gorgeous outdoor locations. I would normally pick off a couple of rating pegs for this sad story (which is definitely a tad too sad) but the fact there were no fantasy monsters or bizarre things in a mystery genre made me add them back.
This game should have had a different title. Maybe, “Dance Macabre/ Mystery of the Irish Troupe”. I wonder where in the world “banshee” came from in the title and believe it or not, I didn’t even demo the game for a while because I thought it would have a wailing banshee. Fear not, there are no annoying or wailing creatures of any kind anywhere in this game, thank goodness!!
I’ve noticed the graphics by Eipix have improved dramatically since the last MCF The Black Veil.
Since then, things are much crisper/clearer when they adapt to a larger monitor.
The graphics are drawn with computer assist and they were clear, with deep shadowing & just enough saturation plus the colors were great. The items in the secondary windows looked real enough to touch.
Most of the game is played at night with dancing fireflies and added touches of various effects & lighting- such as dropping leaves and they did not wash out or dull a scene as some special effects can. By Chapter 6, dawn breaks the horizon with splashes of pink and gold in the sky. It is rare to see a game actually change the time of day. I loved it. The indoor scenes were also done with care. I kept saying “Ooh, and Aaah” with each new scene. There are stained glass windows streaming colors from the sun, a library I wish I could live in, a beautiful garden and even a mansion with a lily pond.
However, I didn’t like how the characters speak in this game. I don’t mean voice acting, I mean- The character remains in the scene with blinking eyes and no lip movement, and a talking head is on one end of a text box whenever someone speaks. I just prefer when they speak from within the scene or are zoomed in on the face/head area with a blurred background. I found it distracting to have the actual character still standing in the scene without moving at all.
REMARKABLE MG & HOS- Chap. 2 has a HOS with matching the interior of various snow globes to a written pamphlet descriptive. Chap. 2 also has a great HOS with an aerial scene of a group of people holding colorful umbrellas. Chap. 3 had a MG I liked where you have a 2 letters with handwriting. First you compare the words and second the letters in each. There is a perfectly narrated HOS at the train station in Chap.3. In Chap.4 pg.3 you find a photo album where you must locate the highlighted words in these photos. It had multiple pages and it was so realistically done. You learned more of the story and connected with the photos/characters and I thought it was brilliant. Chapter 4 also has an aerial type maze over a garden that you must direct your character past the baddies through the hedges, in 3 different scenes. It was really addicting and not easy by the 3rd one. The end of chapter 5 had a good dexterity type “fight” scene where you must bypass several moving swords and accumulate several light spots.
MUSIC- is also beautifully done. Several tracks are haunting, with harps and bagpipes. Some of the songs reminded me of the movie Titanic. They are tracks that some may want the DL to keep from the CE content. The prettiest of all was the theme to the initial cut scene in chapter 1, I thought.
GAMES THAT ARE SIMILAR:
Here are a couple of other games that remind me of this one in that also had consistently beautiful outdoor gameplay in a specific country/location…. So instead of Ireland, maybe check out Japan (oops, I wrote China by mistake in the CE review) or Tibet here at BFG. Both are more the mystery genre, like this game.
1. Mythic Wonders: Child of Prophecy (1606 JAPAN ~ this game has one of the best screensavers I own.)
I will add a link to it…..
2. Enigmatis 3- The Shadow of Karkhala (set in the Tibetan mountains).
Thank you BFG; and a huge thank you to Eipix ~ This is my new favorite game by you! Show less

I found this game, for the lack of a better term, lacking. I own all of this series and couldn't believe Eipix would turn it into a ghost story. I bought it in the belief they wouldn't change the theme that much. On that I was correct, but and it is a big BUT, it was not their best effort. It just wasn't fun like the others. It had errors, IE, on start up there was an error in the game and I had to restart it and the map, usually my go to thing, wouldn't help me at the train station. I had a ticket I needed to fill out and finish. I did everything I could think of and nothing would work. I tried the map which didn't show anyplace else to go and when I hit the hint button, it just said I needed to move along. Come to find out I had to click on something twice. Found that out by going to the walkthrough. This was really aggravating. It isn't the worst game I've ever played, but far from being something to write home about. Something just happened to the quality I have come to expect from these folks which left me wondering what in the world happened.
Graphics were well done and the effects went along with the action in the scene. Voice overs seemed to be good. I did enjoy the background music.
The mini games were rather simple which was to my liking. Not a big fan of them anyway and if I can do them, more the merrier. A lot of repetition of the same thing to finish the mini, so after completing one or two of I just hit skip. Hidden objects were okay. No complaints on them. I mentioned the map which wasn't all that horrible. It usually showed where you had things to do and would transport.
I'll leave the story telling to others. It's an okay story. Kind of convoluted at times and a tad bit hard to follow, but it did kind of come together in the end. The characters were interesting and it did keep my attention on a rainy, windy Florida afternoon.
All in all, this game was good and by any other developer would probably be an exceptional game. I so enjoyed all the others in the series and help out hope against hope this would would make the same grade.
Give the demo a try, which is really short and doesn't get you into the story very much, so don't base everything on it. Show less

I've been to Ireland four times and am in love with the whole country. This game would have been three stars for me but it deserves an extra star just for the Irish music and the wonderful accents. Couldn't give it five stars because it's way too easy and rather short. I'll probably play it again just to listen to the music.

- the story centers in Ireland and Irish legends, a nice change
-LOTS of puzzles to solve, most are easy
- fewer HOPs, many involving finding objects highlighted in a narrative rather than a list
- story is quite good, well developed and easy to follow
The sleuthing aspect is good, but some actions to take are not always what you expect, or slightly odd.
I very much liked this game, especially all the locations visited. I wish the banshee character looked a little kinder rather than the crazy evil look the devs gave her. This was a near perfect game in terms of quality and value for the money. Show less

This game is a screaming banshee no for me for several reasons. First of all, I had a hard time making it through the demo because it has no challenge whatsoever. Secondly, this demo hit a record for being the shortest demo ever, I took my time and still had 45 minutes left of the 90 minute trial!
Thirdly, (is there such a word?) the game had some incredible feats, by incredible, I mean ridiculous impossible feats. At one point I actually threw a rope across the ravine, and as luck would have it my teeny tiny carabiner landed on the teeny tiny hook, on my first attempt! This is the same hook that I had to find a saw to cut the carabiner from a swing, it's a carabiner, why didn't I just push the clasp and remove it from the rope?
Well, we have yet another screaming Banshee, the Irish harbinger of impending doom, whose presence means a family member will soon perish. She seems more like a Piroshedevil to me,, she can light fires pretty well, but not once did she scream, not even, FIRE! Anyway, it looks like daddy O'Connor has some splaining to do, where was he hanging up his tap shoes back in the day?
The Hidden Object Scenes are super simple and super boring. We start out with finding items that match keywords of newspaper articles about the rise and fall of the Irish Step-dance King who joined forces with his brother, otherwise known as Uncle Pat (but I'm starting to suspect my last name is Banshee) Eventually you'll work your way through several piles of junk to find Silhouetted Shapes, some of which look nothing like their silhouette, the old familiar task of finding 5 of two different identical items which will give you a tool to open up the List, and a small Zoom Zone HOP where you must find Multiples of the same items. In the Collector's Edition version, there is a Morphing Object to find in most of the HOP's, and there is an alternate Match 3 game to play.
The Mini Games are super easy, and most can be solved on the first attempt, just like the rope throwing thingy. (thingy is a real word I'm pretty sure) Below are brief descriptions of some of the games you'll encounter during this very brief demo:
1) Move the feet along the lines, using extra spaces, so they line up in their matching numbered slots.
2) Press start and click on corresponding dance move buttons when the dropping dance moves are within the green zone.
3) Recreate the tiles image so it consists of a continuous straight line.
4) Arrange notes by dragging them according to the music sheet, clicking on the notes will rotate them.
5) Attach the rope hooks to the tent stakes on the ground by selecting circles to move them either up or down with the specified amount of moves shown.
6) Lead the rope across the pattern in a continuous line, selecting the X button to attach the rope, which cannot cross more than once.

My review based on demo, only:
I love these Devs games, usually, but this one fell short, IMHO. Very drab colors, less-than-their-usual-standard graphic, and super easy puzzles...not to mention boring. I really disliked the "dance" puzzle! And another puzzle in which you turn circle to match up the lines...come on...super easy and simply a time suck.

I've loved every Danse Macabre game so far but this was way too short - If I had tried the demo first then bought it I would be even more disappointed.
Graphics are excellent - never have sound on so can't comment on that.
